ALUSTRIUM

Philadelphiabased death metal band Alustrium is ready to put out their selfreleased sophomore album, A Tunnel to Eden, on July 24th, 2015. This overthetop opus is a surprising homerun platter of progressive death metal that balances effortlessly somewhere between The Black Dahlia Murder, Between The Buried and Me and Cynic music landscape. They are fast, creative and technical. Guitar parts are of indubitable quality: brutal, groovy, and creative at same time. Vocalist does an excellent job as well, matching the high scream and midrange guttural vocals perfectly in the transition parts. Every song on A Tunnel to Eden has its own atmosphere and pace, and each track varies enough throughout to not sound monotonous. However, at its core the album remains heavily rooted in the blastbeat and doublekick territories, to keep speed addicts happy. This album offers also some bits and pieces of experimentation, especially in the three movement suite The Illusion of Choice I: Genesis; II: Eros ; III: Thanatos (the length time of the whole composition hits around 33 minutes). Guitarists are at the top of their game here, both riff and solowise. The axemen are able to put out some unexpected haunting clean and acoustic melodies that are paired well with the evil grooves and furious riffage of the down tuned guitars. Overall, A Tunnel to Eden is a well crafted album that flows amazingly, filled with great ideas and perfect execution. ALUSTRIUM
