What Makes a Specialty Lubricant • “Specialty” lubricants are designed for atypical conditions, such as: • Food Grade • Biodegradable • Fire-Resistant

Food-Grade Lubricants •

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) created the original food-grade designations H1, H2 and H3.

The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) has evolved globally to succeed the USDA and has adopted the existing H1,H2,H3 categories.

H1 - Possibility of incidental food contact.

H2 - No possibility of contact.

H3 - Typically edible oils, used to prevent rust on hooks, trolleys and similar equipment.

HT1- Used as heat transfer fluids in food processing facilities where there is

u

possibility of incidental food contact

Food-grade Lubricant Market •

Food grade lubricants are used in only 40% of food processing applications

Market expected to grow as new governmental regulations are put u into place

Expected growth - $182 million (2016) to $265 million in 2025

Food-grade Lubricant Market •

Users have resisted food grade lubricants because of perceived performance issues and higher costs

•

Miles Lubricants has overcome these issues by developing a line of u with performance levels that are cost competitive lubricants comparable to non food grade fluids

Miles Lubricants

Food-grade Lubricant Performance • Miles Lubricants Food Grade lubricants utilize the latest NSF approved additives and base fluids to provide the highest possible level of performance

Food-grade Lubricants •

Miles Lubricants Food Grade Lubricants are listed in NSF “White Book” •

Biodegradable •

u

There are two ways to describe biodegradable lubricants: o

Inherently - biodegrade > 20 percent in 28 days.

o

Readily - biodegrade > 60 percent in 28 days

Biodegradable - VGP •

Vessel General Permit (VGP) requires or encourages the use of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EAL) in marine applications

Recommended viscosity is based on the following to maintain optimal fluid film thickness at the load zone:

Load

Gears Lubricant Types uEP

(Extreme-Pressure)

EP additives bond to metal surfaces and prevent welding and wear under high load and temperature when lubricant film thickness is thinner than normal.

Can be chemically aggressive towards soft metals like brass/bronze which are found in worm gears and plain bearings. Wear

uAW

(Anti-wear)

Used in lower load and higher speed applications than compared to EP

Forms sacrificial layer on metal surfaces to prevent wear

Gears Lubricant Types uFood •

Grade

Formulated for applications where there is the possibility of incidental food contact (H1)

uPolyalkylene

Glycol

Ideal for applications where an EP additive cannot be used (soft metals)

Hydraulic Fluids – Fire Resistant •

Fire resistant hydraulic fluids are increasing in demand in multiple industries

Leaks from high pressure hydraulic lines can lead to massive fires

Hydraulic Fluids – Fire Resistant •

MSF1201303 fluids

Reduce the risk of fire propagation by reducing the flame thrower effect

They are superior to Water Glycol based hydraulic fluids in that they:

(FG)

are Miles's line of fires resistant hydraulic

Provides superior wear protection

Easier to use (water levels do not need to be maintained to ensure fire resistance)

Compatible with existing equipment and mineral oil based hydraulic fluids

Food Processing Chain Conveyor •

MSF2063003 is formulated for use in low temperature spiral and blast freezers

Commonly found in bakeries, ice cream plants, meat processing facilities

Ovens operate at very low temperatures (<-40OF)

Lubricants need to be protect against wear at both ambient temperatures and extremely low temperatures

Oil Distributors •

Many distributors make a large portion of their revenue on fuel sales. The lubricants part is necessary to maintain accounts.

Distributors are held to obligations by major oil companies to maintain territory by selling X number of gallons.

Premium products hold more value – Upsell incentive

Distributors get kick-back funds for volume on certain products

uThese

factors influence distributors to:

Sell flagship brand over private label

Sell large volume bottom tier Engine, Hydraulic, and Gear •

Chevron AW 68 distributor cost $4.11/gal selling for $5.12/gal

Cam 2 AW selling for $4.85/gal

Oil Distributors uWhy

distributors carry more than one lubricant

brand •

Some end users are brand loyal and create demand •

Converting an organized end user over to another brand is a daunting task. Even adding one lubricant can be a significant hurdle that personnel avoid.

Multiple brands allow larger distributors to have pricing leverage against their major oil brand.

Adding brands can fill gap in pricing and specialized products like food grade and biodegradable.
