In Toronto we Trust?

Ana Bailão should be elected as the next mayor of the City of Toronto.

On June 26, 2023, voters will elect a new mayor for the City of Toronto.

The new mayor will guide the business of the city over the next 3 years at a critical time in the life of a city in decline. Regardless of the fact that there are 102 candidates, most would agree that only 7 are serious contenders.

Milenio Stadium is conducting an appraisal of the candidates and what each platform will mean for the next 3 years. We can all agree that currently the city is plunging into degenerative social conditions that may affect the way of life for its residents for years to come. Therefore, this election is of extreme importance as the policies adopted by candidates and accepted by voters may dictate our way of life for the next 7 years.

The deterioration of positivism amongst the population is creating a vacuum of uncertainty and thus the regressive approach to voting certainty. With over 20% of voters’ undecided about who they want as to whom the next mayor may be, the message is possibly that none of the candidates fulfills the void of what this city needs at this time.

Elections are a pivotal aspect of democratic societies and have serious psychological implications for both voters and candidates. The decision to compete in an election with so many candidates is complicated and could be life changing due to not only the costs of running the campaign, but the personal commitment made where you may not have a job after the election, unless you are a current councilor who is running. After observing the serious candidates express an interplay of emotions, attitudes, beliefs, motivations, and behaviours that may shape their decision-making process, one can conclude that perhaps none of the candidates have shown what it would take to move Toronto into the future. For some, lack of experience and political biases will render them unable to govern effectively. The current slogan “anybody but Olivia Chow” is reflective of a fear that she will take this city into a direction which is not what this city needs now. She has run a campaign about nothing but promises to punish those who are progressive in this city. This has become an emotional campaign devoid of originality.

A major component of running a city is business experience and none of the candidates possesses the attributes necessary to manage the fourth largest city in North America. While searching for originality in the candidates’ promises, I found a recycling approach of ideas proposed by each which is a dangerous example of a future without solutions. The campaign has transformed itself into motivating voters by fear. Biases have played a major role in having taken this election into a direction where self-servitude or loyalty to political party have resulted in errors in judgement about what this city really needs.

The residents of this city all know what is wrong and what it would take to make things right, but when candidates even refuse to commit to uphold by-laws such as park encampments then we know that Toronto will become another San Francisco. None of the candidates have shown the courage and originality to deal persuasively with the issues.

We need to get out and vote in this most important election and the choices to lead have become clearer. Toronto needs someone with experience, compassionate for social needs and to be prepared to represent all citizens.

It is my belief that despite the complexity of this city, Ana Bailão is the candidate who should be elected to lead as she best exemplifies the best attributes of an inclusive democracy.
