O que foi cidade

Editado pela «On y va» (capa de Miguel Betancourt e poema de Luís Garcia Montero) o livro de 79 páginas e 32 poemas organiza-se de modo a colocar lado a lado o texto original e a tradução de António Manuel Venda. A autora nasceu em Cuba (1971) e vive no Equador desde 1995. Publicou vários livros de poesia (2005, 2008, 2012, 2016 e 2019) e trabalhos seus integram antologias publicadas em vários países: Chile, Equador, EUA, México e Peru.

Trata-se de uma poesia culta, mistura feliz de arte e comunicação, cujas citações passam por Italo Calvino, Claudio Rodriguez, José Lezama Lima, Blanca Varela e Emily Dickinson: «que tristeza é ter uma casa vazia». O ponto de partida deste livro está na página 7 («Sonhas que acordas noutra cidade») embora o título esteja na 39: «No princípio /acreditávamos que a cidade albergava símbolos/ pardais nos fios/letreiros/bandeirinhas». Mesmo vivendo em outras cidades a autora transporta a memória da ilha onde nasceu («geométrico rosto da minha call, fax, e-mail, internet transaction, and other electronic communication anywhere in the world.

As l have stated these coincidences are becoming a rather common occurrence. Anecdotal accounts are popping up all over the place with discussions leading to eerily corresponding advertisements featuring on all our favorite social media platforms and search engines. At first blissfully unaware of the problem, l started to notice creepily on-point ads a few months ago but kept relatively quiet about it, fearing l was transforming into one of those bugeyed conspiracy theorists. Items l never even searched for, only talk about, were appearing before me.

Not wanting to overstate things about growing concerns regarding the accuracy of these ads, l broached the subject with a few close friends, one l knew wouldn’t immediately lock me up upon hearing about my observations. But rather than judging me, they started reporting their own instances of this phenomenon. Even down to the specific brand of clothes that were never searched for, only talked about.

Nestes poemas o «eu» tem lugar («Eu prefiro as minha nostalgias») mas o plural está sempre presente: «Quando voltar ao meu nome (…) cairão os pães e os peixes /por buracos de fome». A voz poética procura conhecer-se («O animal canta») e define o seu ofício: «Observo sem rumo/este ponto imóvel/as pálidas folhas/no pequeno charco/que é a vida» mas sem esquecer o lugar de onde partiu: «Ser cubano é levar às costas uma ilha».
