Editor’s Letter

A not-so-scary story

of my favorite Mother’s Day gifts: A prenatal massage—I was cutting it close at 36 weeks, but it was awesome A sweet preschool poem with Mason’s tiny hand print, which brought full-on tears Steak au poivre and steamed artichokes, made with extra love

Last weekend, in a moment of unbridled lazy parenting, I put on a DVD of a movie I had not pre-screened for my 6 year old, Mason—and then I returned to visiting with my sister in law, who was over for lunch. Less than a minute later, Mason came running into the dining room sobbing, “That movie is really scary!” He’d enjoyed the first in this series of movies, so his reaction confused me. I tried to get him to explain what was so terrifying, but he was too traumatized. But before bed, he kept insisting that I put the movie on so I could see the scary part for myself. That wasn’t an option, with his younger brother Rex present—especially right before bedtime. Finally I convinced Mason to describe what had him so freaked. “It was dark…and there was a lady…and she was screaming and crying…and then someone handed her a baby,” he whispered, eyes wide. I can be pretty dense, especially at the end of the day, so he patiently repeated this a few times before it dawned on me that he had watched a birth scene—medieval, no less—unsupervised! Poor Mason! Bad Mama! Well, this of course lead to a discussion about what it feels like to have a baby and a simplified description of his own birth (via C-section) as compared to his brother’s (VBAC, vaginal birth after Caesarean). My boys leaned in with fascinated stares when I told them, “Yes, it can really hurt when the baby is getting ready to come out down there, especially when the head appears. But then the shoulders and body shoot out pretty quickly, and the doctor or midwife is there to catch the baby, clean it up a bit, and bring it to the mom, who instantly feels better and forgets about ever feeling the pain.” Mason’s kindergarten teacher is pregnant at the moment. I’m pretty sure he’s seeing her—and his own Mama—through new eyes now. Happy Mother’s Day!

Real Moms Talk

Birth story of the month: Epidural drama “Terror” wasn’t strong enough to describe the anxiety I felt about giving birth. The lifelong commitment to nurture and guide the little baby inside me seemed like a piece of cake compared to giving birth to that little baby. Birthing class videos (aka, horror films) didn’t demystify the birthing process, they simply proved to me that birth would be the most agonizing experience of my life. Without question, I planned to get an epidural, and get it early. Contractions didn’t start when my water broke, so I was given a Pitocin drip at the hospital. Once I was dilated three centimeters, the contractions were coming so strong that I knew it was time for the epidural. The anesthesiologist prepped me by numbing the local area first. “So far, so good,” I thought. But then it felt as though she was cranking my vertebrae apart with a tire jack. A clicking, cracking sound reverberated through my bones and into my ears. I gasped. “I got heem,” she said, meaning she drew blood she shouldn’t have. I groaned as she prepped a different spot on my spine to try again. And again, the pain rattled up my spine. I was drenched in sweat, I shook, I cried. Then I heard then the anesthesiologist ask for the doctor because she “got heem” again. I didn’t think I could make it through another attempt, but the mood in the room

Letters from our readers

changed as soon as my doctor stepped in. He kept the tone light, distracted me, and successfully gave me an epidural in moments. It wasn’t long before my contractions were pain free. Except epidurals can cause low blood pressure, and mine had plummeted to 80/40. I didn’t know if I would throw up or pass out, and my limbs felt heavy and weak. A nurse quickly administered epinephrine; soon my blood pressure was OK and my strength returned. The anesthesia process, which should have taken just a few minutes, had become an hour-long ordeal. In contrast, it took only 25 minutes to push, and there was little pain. In fact, delivering my darling Henry gave me an adrenaline rush! Giving birth is a monumental achievement, and I can’t wait to do it again. Heather Mark Orlando, FL

The mature set consulted with Ariel Joseph Towne, an internationally known feng shui expert and life coach. On the way out, the kids scored goodie bags worth over $100 and the grown-ups’ gift bags included treats worth more than $1,500! Now that’s a party!

Brooke gives us a personal tour of her boys’ new nursery It’s surreal to be getting ready for twins—I can’t believe it’s actually happening! Charlie is a baseball fanatic, so we decided to go with a subtle baseball theme for the nursery. We told our designer that we didn’t want anything too over the top, and she struck the perfect balance between sporty and sophisticated. Simple touches like the adorable baseball lamps are fun but still subtle. Two and a Half Men’s Angus T. Jones with little brother Otto.

Charlie was very involved in the planning; he cares about all the little details. He wanted to make sure that the carpet was nice and plush! And the twin glider rocking chairs and ottomans will be perfect for baseball watching with the boys! It’s hard to name my favorite part of the nursery, but I love the sleek cribs and changer. They look like they will stand up to the destruction of two boys. And I am also super excited to have a beautiful closet system to help keep all of us organized.

Sounds scary, but it isn’t Lochia (LOW-kee-ya) Like a super heavy period, this post-birth release of blood and uterine lining can be a bit freaky if you’re not expecting it, but it’s totally standard. Genetic testing at the request of your doctor—not so fun. But genotyping your DNA? Way cool. The experts at 23andMe have developed a home-testing kit—Time Magazine’s 2008 Invention of the Year—that reveals which genetic variants you possess. The only catch: It’s nowhere near as cheap as a home pregnancy test. With the kit, you might find out that baby could be blue-eyed because of recessive genes, even if you and your partner are brown-eyed. Or that somewhere way up the line, you have Native American ancestors. The simple spit test also determines if you’re likely to develop certain genetic conditions—everything from lactose intolerance to Type 2 diabetes—or are a carrier. Get the whole family involved and you can even compare genes to see what’s been inherited through the generations. $798 for 2 kits, 23andme.com

Mompreneur of the month:

Shannon DiPadova, Due Maternity Shannon DiPadova was pregnant with her first child, visiting her parents in Santa Barbara, CA, when she noticed the small, stylish town where she’d been raised didn’t have a maternity clothing store. She didn’t think much of it, but months later, in the wake of San Francisco’s dot-com bust, as she and husband, Albert, made plans to move back there to be near the grandparents, they wondered what they’d do for work. That’s when Shannon thought, why not a maternity store?

“I think it helps that we’re in touch every day with what goes on with the site.” Due Maternity’s first boutique opened in 2003, when daughter Sofia was just 9 months old. And although the plan was to own just a boutique, the couple launched duematernity .com, too. “Then we started getting orders,” Shannon says. She wasn’t surprised the site took off—there wasn’t much retail online then, and proximity to Los Angeles meant Due had access to the booming pregnancy clothing market—but it was exciting. The DiPadovas now have three kids and five stores: two in Atlanta, plus Austin, San Francisco, and Santa Barbara. As for the website, Albert still shoots the photos and Shannon still writes the copy. “At six years, we’re considered veterans,” Shannon says. “It’s hard to believe but it’s true.”

Tap water. Is it safe? We know you’ve been there, thirsty like crazy but stuck somewhere with a nasty drinking fountain that’s tempting you to buy a soda instead. You don’t have to. Most municipal water is safe, and your city is required to tell you just how safe in a yearly report (search online at epa.gov/safewater/ccr/). The feds set standards for how healthy the water is, as well as for taste and odor, says Richard Cook, a lab manager at Culligan Water. You’ve probably heard that environmental groups want tighter restrictions on the chemicals that do get into our water supply, including tiny amounts of pharmaceuticals. But these worries shouldn’t stop you from drinking from the tap, says pediatrician Alan Greene, M.D. “The odds are very much in your baby’s favor.” Greene recommends carrying your own stainless-steel bottle. Fill it with filtered tap water when you can, to make sure you’re getting the cleanest water possible. But don’t fret if you have to fill from the straight from the nearest faucet—it’s more important that you stay hydrated. And if your water isn’t from a city source, a company like Culligan can install a whole-house filter so the water’s perfect when you turn on the faucet. Just don’t waste your money on bottled water; standards for it are actually lower than those for tap. The Environmental Working Group recently tested 10 popular bottled water brands and found an average of 8 contaminants in each, often at levels higher than established limits.

Dr. Robert Sears One of America’s leading pediatricians answers a question on every expectant parent’s mind.

10:32 p.m. A family is born. 10:41 p.m. A future is protected.

Ask Dr.Sears

Should I bank my baby’s cord blood?

I strongly recommend cord blood banking to my patients. Using your own family’s cord blood has been shown to significantly improve medical outcomes compared to using cord blood from someone outside your family. One of the most compelling reasons to save cord blood stem cells is that new findings indicate you may be able to use them to treat conditions like brain injury and juvenile diabetes. And they have already been used to treat nearly 70 diseases, including leukemia and other cancers. As new treatments develop, having cord blood on hand will be invaluable. The decision to store my son’s cord blood was easy. Deciding which bank to trust took time and research. I feel confident recommending the bank I chose, Cord Blood Registry® (CBR®). Parents have only one chance with each child to bank his or her cord blood stem cells. The importance of banking is clear, but the financial commitment may deter some families. Thankfully, payment plans make the cost well within reach for most people. I believe cord blood banking is well worth the investment for a family’s future, and parents should strongly consider making use of this valuable service. Pediatrician Robert Sears, MD, FAAP, is a noted author, CBR medical advisor, and the father of three boys.

Saving your baby’s cord blood stem cells may offer a lifetime of protection. There is nothing more important than protecting your family. Although your child will never be immune from accidents or illness, you can still have the ultimate peace of mind: knowing you’ve done everything possible to protect your child. It begins with banking your baby’s cord blood stem cells. Cord blood is showing promise in the treatment of brain injury and juvenile diabetes. And for years has been used to treat nearly 70 serious diseases, saving many lives from leukemia and other cancers. Save your baby’s cord blood with Cord Blood Registry,® the world’s largest and most experienced cord blood bank. Don’t miss your one chance. Call CBR® today for you free information kit

1-888-595-3050 And visit cordblood.com

In addition to current uses, new medical applications for cord blood stem cells are being discovered rapidly; however, banking cord blood does not guarantee that the cells will provide a cure or be applicable for every situation. Be well

You can make it happen A few high and low-tech helpers to get back that before-baby body

By Lisa Druxman, M.A., founder of Stroller Strides

You’re already looking longingly at those pre-baby jeans. But once baby is here, you’ll find it’s easy to let motherhood come before fitness. And staying motivated, especially if you feel alone or don’t know where to start, makes it that much harder to work out. Of course the traditional methods can help you motivate, but today’s digitally driven world gives you more ways than ever to get moving and stay on track. Feeling better about yourself will help you be a better mom, too, so try these tips, both techie and non, to stay inspired:

out together. Moms all over the country unite online to get in better shape, sharing advice, recipes, success stories, and goals, and holding each other accountable. This year, Stroller Strides started its own digital workout support with the Get Fit Challenge, which began in February and ends this month; moms who sign up get motivational emails, and there’s even a Facebook group to connect with. Finding friends online helps you commit; I link up with other moms on twittermoms.com.

Take baby steps

It’s not enough to say you want to “lose weight.” You need a measurable goal and a plan to get there. Make it specific, achievable, and timely. But forget about the numbers on the scale. Instead, give yourself challenges like cycling to work roundtrip. See how many push-ups you can do or how long you can hold a plank position, then try to go farther every day. Ambitions help you make fitness a part of your routine, working your way to your goal. For more important tools for training, see page 42.

When your baby learns to walk, she’ll take a few steps, fall, and get back up again. You know she’ll eventually learn to run. Well, give yourself the same encouragement! Instead of an all-or-nothing approach, commit to taking a step forward each day. Keep track of what you eat and your exercise routine, and give yourself credit for each postive move. Sometimes it can be hard to see differences in strength or improvements in your diet because they’re so subtle.

Do it together You don’t have to hire a personal trainer or drag along a workout partner to have a cheering section. You don’t even have to work

Let’s eat

Yes, you can still eat fish! Tips for making the safest selections —plus three fast and yummy recipes Fish seems like the perfect pregnancy protein: It’s light, healthy, and packed with baby brain–building fatty acids like DHA. But many types of fish contain a hidden extra that’s not healthy for moms and babies: mercury. This conflicting information leaves you, the conscientious mom-to-be, stuck in the middle with yet another confusing decision to make. Take a breath. You can still eat fish; just follow these guidelines.

How much? Well, it’s recently been under debate. But according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), pregnant and nursing women can safely consume up to 8 ounces of fish per week, but no more than 6 ounces should be albacore tuna or tuna steak, because of mercury concerns; that’s about two meals with fish.

Which ones? In contrast to FDA guidelines, the Environmental Working Group—a nonprofit that investigates the science behind corporate and government claims (ewg.org)—advises against eating albacore tuna or tuna steak, period. Why? Generally, larger fish are higher up on the food chain, so they’re more likely to contain mercury and other contaminants than smaller fish. This is why

By Kate Geagan, M.S., R.D.

pregnant women should avoid shark, swordfish, tilefish, and King mackerel—they’re big fish and have the highest levels of mercury. But this means smaller fish (anchovies, sardines) and plant-eating fish (catfish and barramundi) are less likely to contain pollutants. That’s why “chunk light” tuna, which comes from smaller fish, is a safer tuna choice than albacore. So try using size as a rule when shopping for your catch. For help, check out the National Resources Defense Council guide that ranks fish types according to mercury content (nrdc .org/health/effects/mercury/guide.asp).

Not biting? If you prefer to skip fish altogether, find other ways of getting its critical nutrients into your diet. Ask your ob/gyn about a supplement with at least 300 milligrams of DHA that’s free of contaminants. Two brands we like: Minami Nutrition’s MorDHA and Nordic Naturals. Check out three simple and delicious recipes on the next page. Kate Geagan, M.S., R.D., is an award-winning dietitian in Park City, UT, and author of Go Green, Get Lean: Trim Your Waistline With the Ultimate Low Carbon Footprint Diet. She is the mother of two toddlers.

Good idea! Know more about the fish you buy with Blue Ocean Institute’s FishPhone. Text FISH and the fish in question to 30644; you’ll get a text back telling you if it’s eco-friendly or not. Learn more at blueocean.org /fishphone. p re g n a n c y 3 6 0.c o m

Canned Chunk Light Tuna

Wild Alaskan Salmon

Better-for-you tuna salad

Italian anchovy dip

Sweet ginger marinade

Sans mayo and with added fiber, this is a great alternative to traditional tuna salad. Combine several stalks chopped celery with a drained can of chunk light tuna. Add a can of rinsed and drained white beans. Sprinkle with good sea salt and drizzle on your favorite extra virgin olive oil. Taste and adjust seasoning as you like.

This age-old recipe is so yummy you’ll forget you’re eating a super nutritious fish. Drain and chop a can of oil-packed anchovy fillets. In a saucepan, stir ¾ cup olive oil with 4 or 5 chopped garlic cloves and anchovies over medium heat until combined, about 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in a pat of butter. Serve warm with sliced fennel, endive, and bell pepper.

Add rich flavor to simple salmon with supereasy Asian-style marinade: Mix chopped garlic, ginger, and scallions to taste with enough soy sauce to cover fish and a pinch of brown sugar or a splash of maple syrup. Add fish and marinate for 15 minutes in a bowl in the fridge, then grill or broil as you usually would.

A green life

A green baby doc? Really? You can choose a pediatrician with an eco-conscience

How do you recommend treating eczema in babies? If his By Alan Greene, M.D.; courtesy of

Of course you want a pediatrician who is medically top-notch and well suited to your needs. But so much the better if he or she also has an environmentally sustainable perspective on pediatrics! Here are five questions you may want to ask politely to gauge physicians’ thoughts on all things green:

What advice do you give about introducing solid foods? If his first suggestion is to begin with processed white rice flour cereal or conventional jarred foods, he may still be working from a 20thcentury industrial mindset. Continue the conversation by asking for advice about introducing whole grains, fresh tastes, or organic foods. Green pediatricians are often conscious of nutrition.

How do you recommend treating ear infections? If she says that all ear infections should be treated with antibiotics, she may be behind the times. The American Academy of Pediatrics now teaches that, in many situations, ear infections will heal better without antibiotics (but pain relief should be given for the ear pain). One of the first steps toward sustainability that pediatricians often make in their practices is to reduce the unnecessary use of antibiotics.

first response is to use steroids or prescription drugs, he may not yet be thinking green. Often, a better first approach is to reduce exposure to eczema triggers or to gently moisturize the skin. Greenoriented physicians are more likely to treat the cause rather than just the symptoms and will opt for the gentlest treatment possible.

What kind of baby shampoo do you recommend? If she mentions a conventional brand, she may not yet be thinking about sustainable and pure products. If the doctor mentions companies such as Baby Avalon Organics, Burt’s Bees, or Tom’s of Maine, that’s a good sign that they are aware of greener options. Do you buy organic foods for your own family? These types of questions will help you get a sense of a doctor’s own green lifestyle outside the practice of medicine. Often physicians will start thinking about green issues for their own lives before they start integrating them into their practices. If they have made even small steps in this regard, they may be more supportive of your efforts to raise your baby green. Alan Greene, M.D., is the author of Raising Baby Green and a member of the Pregnancy advisory board, as well as a Healthy Child Healthy World advisory board member. Best Planner i Pregnancy, $2.99 (top) The sooner you get used to tracking things, the sooner you’ll achieve Mama Zen. iPregnancy tracks everything you can think of: due-date and milestone counters, appointment reminders, informational tidbits, 3-D ultrasound pictures, and a customizable baby-name list. Runner Up: My Baby List, $2.99 Incorrigible list-makers rejoice—this app’s incredibly comprehensive pre-loaded to-do list keeps track of everything you need to do to get ready for baby.

Best Fitness Tool NikeWomen Training Club, free (middle) Get your workout team organized with this freebie. After registering at nike.com, build your team profile, and get your fitness progress and the progress of your teammates sent right to your phone, along with training videos. (This app is not specifically for pregnant women, so—as always—consult with your doctor about any new fitness program.)

Most Practical Diet Tool Calorie Abacus, $1.99 (bottom) Calorie Abacus lets you visually balance meals. Pick your food item, build your menu, and then use sliders to adjust your portion size. Smart tips for finding quality apps Check to see if there is a free or “lite” version of the software that lets you try it before buying. Get only what you need. If you want to track just one thing—such as breastfeeding or a grocery list—there is probably a free or less expensive app that will do the job. If you buy an app and think it could be improved, tell the developers. They listen, and updates often incorporate user suggestions, and the update software is usually free!

Best Solution for Mommy Brain Parking App, $.99 (top) Thwart forgetfulness with this smart app: Set a timer for when your meter expires, record (and save) parking restrictions, add a quick note, snap a photo of your location, and have Google Maps drop a pin in your exact location. That car’s not getting lost now!

Top Life Preserver Speed Dial #1 – 4, free (middle) It’s the little black dress of iTunes apps—as simple as it is practical. Just assign important phone numbers (your sweetie, your mom, the hospital, Chinese take-out) to one of the icons and dial them with only a tap—instead of digging through your contacts. You get four different icons, so you can store up to four separate numbers.

Ultimate Waiting Room Companion SimCity, $7.99 Don’t wince at the price: SimCity is a quality game that will keep you entertained for hours. Even with new-baby ADD, the play is interesting and addictive—and the drag-and-drop game play works perfectly with your iPhone.

Best Sanity Saver Baby Log, $4.99 Baby Log provides five tracking categories: diapering, feeding, sleeping, bathing, and other (customizable). Got twins? Just give your iPhone a shake to toggle between babies.

Honorable Mentions Quitter, free (bottom) Don’t let anyone trick you into thinking quitting smoking is easy. It’s one of the hardest things you’ll ever do. Use this simple tracker for motivation.

Babyphone, $2.99 A useful tool that turns your iPhone into a mobile baby monitor. Great for visits to Grandma’s, but there is no substitute for a quality monitor in your home nursery.

twitter Technology can be your new best friend. We give you nine easy-to-follow, must-do tech projects— one for every month of your pregnancy

By Leslie Ayers, editor in chief of Mac|Life magazine

Once the reality of having a baby sets in, those nine months go by faster than it takes for the blue lines to appear on the pee stick. So, to help you reach a state of baby preparedness nirvana and still have time to live your other life, I’ve assembled a simple timeline of projects using the same technologies you already use every day: your computer, your iPod or iPhone, and the Internet (plus a few random others!). These are the things I wish I’d done when I was pregnant with my daughter, Marlo. Even though my pregnancy wasn’t that long ago—and, yes, I do edit a tech magazine for a living—there were several resources I discovered too late to make a difference. Sure, there are plenty of other projects that didn’t make the list, but the following how-tos will cover you in all the major areas. p re g n a n c y 3 6 0.c o m

Create a cheat sheet for what you should and shouldn’t eat Yes, this one is pretty low-tech, but it works. Create a simple, twosided yes/no list that you can print at home or at work, cut out and slip in your wallet next to your AAA card. Follow your baby’s in-utero development

Reading What to Expect When You’re Expecting is great and all, but it’s the act of following your baby’s growth that helps you feel connected to her—not the medium you use to do it. Enter the Internet. My husband and I will always remember when we went online and discovered that Marlo had made it to the “size of a peach” (and ever since then, her nickname has been “Peachy” or “the Peach”). There are a number of websites that let you track baby’s development, either from the sites themselves or through daily or weekly email updates. Whattoexpect.com: Week-by-week fetal-development info when you register with the site. You can also get a daily newsletter from What to Expect author Heidi Murkoff, and instantly create a public or private profile and blog.

Parents.com: Check out fetal development photos from conception to birth—for those parents who dig science shows on public television. TheCradle.com: You’ll find basic development info by trimester here, but what I like best are the checklists, which offer friendly reminders for all the milestones that are easy to forget when you’re newly KU (knocked up).

Follow along as your baby develops from pollywog to person on Parents.com.

Pick your baby’s name

Just because you have the willpower to avoid learning your baby’s gender—how do you do it?—doesn’t mean you can’t be prepared with two solid naming choices. As with following your baby’s growth, there’s the book-centered way and the virtual (some might say, more tree-friendly) way to get the job done. TheCradle.com/babynames/search With 50,000-plus baby names, you can filter your search results by origin—and the list of choices is mind-blowing. Who knew that Bardo, a boy’s name meaning “water,” was both Aboriginal and Scandinavian, and could be used by parents looking for Spanish names beyond Juan and Maria? NameBerry.com You can search names by popularity, style, initial, origin, and meaning (which you will soon discover are two different things). The collection of name lists is deeper and more creative than any site out there—offering up choices like “If you like Alex, you might love…”

Looking for a solid choice? Try NameBerry.com’s “Names with No Nicknames” list.

Join the blogosphere!

We’re not suggesting that you publicly document how many times you got up to pee last night or how misunderstood you feel when your S.O. complains that you’ve eaten all the ice cream—again. No, this project focuses on starting a photo blog for your imminent joy-bundle. Luckily for you, it only takes 30 minutes (or maybe 60-plus if you wait until you’re a sleep-deprived new mom). Once you’re a citizen of New Mommy Land, you can share the latest baby pics and funny poop stories with just a few clicks. There are lots of blogging options, but here are your best bets: Create a photo blog Typepad.com and Blogger.com are the most common and easiest-to-use blog services. Each offers free membership or affordable paid options, depending on how many photos you plan to post. And now there’s a new kid on the blog block; so new, it’s actually still in beta testing: Baveo.com is made especially for parents and it’s so simple to use, they say it just takes 60 seconds to set up. Add a Web gallery You don’t need to own a Mac or iPhone to use MobileMe ($99 a year from apple.com), but in this case, a MobileMe membership really only makes sense for Mac and iPhone users because of the elegant tie-ins between Apple iPhoto, the iPhone’s Camera Roll and Photo Library, and MobileMe’s Gallery

60

feature. This method is easiest yet if you already use MobileMe but just haven’t created any albums in your gallery. Start a photostream Flickr.com has emerged as the king of online photo-sharing sites (free for 100MB of photos per month). Unlike a blog, which will let you post text, Flickr is really meant to be a repository for your photos, although captions and comments are allowed. If you have a Facebook account, you can also link your Facebook page and your Flickr photostream, so anyone looking for new baby pics in either place can find them. Speaking of Facebook, you can certainly use your Facebook page as a place to show off the latest photos of your angel pie. Just don’t forget that, depending on your profile settings, not everyone will be able to view them—and “the elder set” may not be interested in join“Look at how cute she is now...”“Oh, and ing Facebook. how about now?”“I can’t believe she just...”

Use the Web to learn about new-mom resources in your area

As ass-backward as it might sound, to find the best local online new-mommy resources, you might actually have to—gasp—talk to people in person or on the phone. In my case, I found my newmoms group through a friend of a friend whose daughter is a year older than mine, and who only had the coordinator’s contact info because she was able to dig up an old email about a meeting. Start with your girlfriends who’ve had kids and live nearby. If that doesn’t hit pay dirt, ask fellow participants in infant-care and breastfeeding classes at your hospital or birth center. Once you’ve asked everyone, then hit up Google and try these on for size:

TheMommiesNetwork.org MeetUp.com LilaGuide.com MomsLikeMe.com Twittermoms.com Yelp.com info on local support groups (look under community service/non-profit)

month 6 month 7 Create the perfect playlist for your delivery

If you’re already a frequent iTunes music shopper, this is a nobrainer. What you may not know yet—but will certainly discover when you take a tour of your hospital or birth center—is that many hospitals don’t let you plug any standard appliances into the electrical outlets in the delivery room. This means in addition to loading up your iPod with custom playlists to keep you distracted— ahem, relaxed and happy—during delivery, you might also consider investing in a battery-operated portable iPod speaker dock. Our picks for birth-worthy speaker docks: Altec Lansing inMotion iM600, $150, alteclansing.com

Logitech Pure-Fi Express Plus, $100, logitech.com

Design personalized notes for baby gifts

I am probably in my own weird club on this one, but I love writing thank-you notes. And since you’ve got a relative glut of free time on your hands, how about exercising some creativity and designing your own cards, then printing them on plain matte cardstock on your home or office color printer? Consider this a warm-up to designing baby’s birth announcements, to which you’ll add the one photo of your baby you manage to snap between age 0 and 3 months in which she has a passably sweet expression and hasn’t spit up on the “good jammies.” For Mac users, there are several good options for easy-to-use software. Our go-to choice is The Print Shop 2 from MacKiev ($70, mackiev.com) For Windows, we like Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 ($100, adobe.com).

And now for the playlists. Our favorite way to make iTunes playlists is using the Smart Playlist feature. Smart Playlists are dynamic playlists of songs based on criteria you designate that get updated on the fly as you add new music to your iTunes library. Depending on your musical tastes and what kind of tunes put you in your happy place, start by creating a few smart lists by genre. Here’s what a Smart Playlist dialog looks like in iTunes on a Mac.

Focus all that nesting energy into creating thank you notes.

month 8 month 9 Set up a high-speed labor notification system

Think of this as the phone tree for the Internet age. We’re talking about Twitter, babe, and it’s not just for teenie-boppers and urban hipsters. A link to your Twitter feed on the Web is all your loved ones need to find out when you’re going into labor. And it’s as simple as setting up an account and enable updates via SMS (short message service) on your mobile phone. Start at twitter.com, and create an account. If you use Yahoo, Gmail, or other free email services, Twitter can locate people in your contact lists who are also Twitter users, and it will tell you who they are so you can start following them. Once you’re in the system, be sure to enable the ability to update your Twitter feed by texting a certain number from your mobile phone (usually 4040 within the United States). Check with your wireless provider to make sure your plan includes SMS texting and does not charge you an extra fee for texts you send or receive. Once you have a Twitter username set up, your Twitter feed is accessible to anyone on the Web at twitter.com/yourusername. If your friends and family are already hip to Twitter, they won’t think less of you for twittering things like, “Another contraction! Send champagne!”

Create a newborn data tracker

When I first saw the “poop diary” a friend kept for her first son seven years ago, I chuckled and thought, “How anal—har har—can you get?” Then I had a baby of my own and started a poop diary for her, in which I documented everything that went in her mouth and everything that came out the other end. More than just making sure your newborn’s plumbing is in working order, this kind of tracker should also document how much and often she eats— which you’ll surely be quizzed on by your pediatrician. Now that you’re hooked on Twitter, I don’t recommend tweeting your kid’s blowouts or on which boob she last fed. But this is handy information because after a few days with no real sleep, it gets very hard to remember. So before baby debuts, create a simple tracking sheet in your favorite word processing program. Call your log whatever you want. Mine was called “Marlo’s I/O”— a computer geek term for input/output. You can also go to TheBabyNanny .com to download tracking Windows software ($22) or go analog and print a free PDF; or try a mobile phone app: trixietracker.com ($15 for 3 months).

Go to it! Now that you’ve seen how technology can help you prepare for your baby’s arrival, I hope you’ve not only gained a new appreciation for your computer, the Internet, and all the other gadgets fighting for space in your purse and home office, but also that you’re ready to welcome your cuddle bug without the stress of feeling disorganized or caught off-guard. Which is not to say you’ll be any less mortified if your water breaks while you’re standing in line at Target. But that’s what mops are for—and you’ve got that stash of clean, dry towels in your trunk already, right? Leslie Ayers is editor in chief of Mac|Life magazine (maclife.com) and mom to Marlo, born September 11, 2007—18 months after Twitter.com launched.

Anna Getty’s four-point plan for assuming your new role like a champ By Laura Laing

She’s a woman of many talents: actress, cookbook author, yoga teacher, and entrepreneur— but since her daughter India was born in 2004, Anna Getty’s most cherished role has been mother. She had an amazing pregnancy and birth, an experience she wants you to have, too!

Tip: To avoid toxins, go for organic when eating anything without a skin or an edible skin.

EDUCATION Read up a storm. Talk to your doctor, friends, and family. Suck up all the info like a sponge! During her first pregnancy—and just after giving birth—Getty admits she read voraciously. Like many expecting moms, she wanted to know everything she could, and that’s why the first week of PAM is devoted to education. “I take a holistic approach [to pregnancy and childbirth], but it’s not dogmatic,” Getty explains. Her overriding message? Trust your gut and make your nutrition, birth, home, and child-care decisions based on solid, reliable information that is best for you and your baby. “There’s no time in a woman’s life when she’s seeking out more information than when she’s expecting,” says Kristen Deshaies, marketing director for Seventh Generation, a company that produces environmentally friendly products and is also PAM sponsor. “But it can be confusing, especially when you have such a life-changing event coming.” PAM advisory board member Christopher Gavigan agrees. “Pregnancy can be scary and overwhelming,” says the executive director of Healthy Child Healthy World, a nonprofit organization that educates parents about harmful chemicals. Everyone and their mother wants to give advice, but there are very few “one size fits all” answers to most pregnancy questions. The best thing you can do for yourself is to gather information from sources you trust and make up your own mind. EXERCISE Birth is a marathon; start training for it now. You’ll be stronger when push comes to…push. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that pregnant women devote at least 30 minutes of each day to moderate exercise. Well, that’s certainly easier said than done. “I think it’s really important to prepare your body” [for pregnancy and childbirth], Getty says, and part of that is staying active. She personifies this in her DVD, Anna Getty’s Pre & Post Natal Yoga Workout ($20, barnesandnoble.com). Lisa Druxman, a member of the PAM advisory board and founder of Stroller Strides, knows all too well the myths of pregnancy and exercise. Her company provides fitness routines lead by trained facilitators in 800 communities across the country. Originally designed for new moms, Druxman has now added Fit4Baby, a program for expecting mothers. You can even try a free class during PAM exercise week, May 10 to 16. “A woman’s body will change more during pregnancy than in any other time in her life,” Druxman says. And the truth is, you can start exercising at any time—even during pregnancy. If you’re a first-time exerciser, start out slowly and talk to your doctor about your routine. The benefits are huge. Working out can keep blood pressure down and even help you avoid those little accidents when you laugh. And being in shape before delivery may mean a quicker rebound and shedding the baby fat faster. NUTRITION AND WELLNESS Small changes make a big difference when you have a baby in your belly. During pregnancy you’re eating for two, right? Not really. Cravings are real and sometimes the only thing that kills the nausea is a sleeve of Saltines, but good nutrition is key to staying healthy during pregnancy. It’s also critical to your baby’s development.

Anna’s inspiration She’s a renaissance woman, but it’s Anna Getty’s devotion to healthy living, especially during pregnancy, that’s drove her to start PAM. What inspired you to create Pregnancy Awareness Month? I was surprised that my [prenatal yoga] students were still in the dark about their options and being given misinformation. What do you hope PAM will accomplish? I want women to move into pregnancy feeling confident. I’m trying to encourage moms to trust their intuition—to encourage women to take back their power in the [pregnancy] process and not hand it over to other people. You’re pregnant with your second child. How does that make this year different for you? It’s just a very auspicious year for me. I think it’s great to be in all this energy and to be pregnant—there’s a sweetness about it. Photos of Anna Getty by Ron Hamad

Eating well is about making smart choices, not revamping your diet altogether. A prenatal vitamin and additional protein, calcium, folic acid, iron and omega-3 fatty acids are all essential during your pregnancy and afterward while you’re nursing. Eating organic apples, grapes, peaches, pears, spinach, and strawberries (basically anything without a skin or with an edible skin) can help you avoid toxins found in pesticides and herbicides. You can avoid hormones and antibiotics by choosing organic milk, eggs, and meats. The products around you are as important as what you eat, so if your nesting instinct makes you want to clean like mad, be careful to avoid chemicals found in some cleaning and personalcare products “We live in a world today where industrial chemicals are in our homes and on our skin,” Gavigan says. If your cleaning products make your eyes water or throat itchy, they’re probably full of harmful chemicals. Drain- and ovencleaners are obvious culprits, along with air fresheners, which have been ≥associated with diarrhea and earaches in infants. But be wary of any product that contains more chemicals than organic elements And if you’re transforming the nursery into a vision of blue or pink, pick paints and carpets without volatile organic compounds (VOCs). You can further help protect the Earth for your baby’s generation by choosing sustainable products, like bamboo, organic fabrics, and repurposed items.

Nurture Corny but true: Learning to love yourself will help you love your baby. With a tiny person taking up residence inside you, it may be difficult to put yourself first, even some of the time. Yet pregnancy is the perfect time for self-care in all forms. Online groups like Hot Moms Club (HotMomsClub.com) help moms connect with one another to offer support, advice, and information. “Hot Moms are confident and powerful,” says founder Jessica Denay, who is a member of the PAM advisory board. “Our focus is all positive.” Feeling confident is one thing; feeling treasured is another. Nurturing also includes finding that one special thing you can do for yourself each day—a walk outdoors, time with the newspaper, or chatting with a friend on the phone. Massage can offer a new appreciation of your changing body, along with stress relief. And even if you can’t see your toes, they deserve to be painted! It seems Pregnancy Awareness Month is what nurtures Getty. “I love this work,” she says. “As long as I’m alive, I want to help women [experience] conscious birth and parenting. I think that can change the world.” PAM is a step in the right direction. Laura Laing also writes for Parents and The Advocate. When she was pregnant, she remembers scouring the universe for any information about pregnancy, labor, and delivery. She also remembers feeling like a superhero.

Kerri Walsh The two-time Olympic gold medalist and professional beach volleyball player has traded in her teeny bikini for a lot more material—maternity duds! She and her husband will welcome their first child in May I conceived…two days after we [Kerri and her partner Misty May-Treanor] won the gold in Beijing. When we won the gold, it helped me focus on the next medal, which was getting pregnant. We know what we’re having…but we’re keeping it to ourselves. I truly did not want to know but my husband really wanted to know. We had an ultrasound two weeks before Christmas and I asked the doctor to put the news in an envelope and seal it as a gift for Casey [Jennings, Walsh’s husband]. I cried as he opened it and we found out together. I thought it would help him connect to the pregnancy more since I’m living it every day. My workout routine has changed…I’m not trying to kill myself anymore. Slowing down the pace has been the most challenging part. I still do cardio and weights and workout with a trainer, but just less intense cardio and the weights are not as heavy. I’m also a big believer of Pilates. The thing I hate about being pregnant is…my butt. No one told me what happens to your butt and that truly frightens me. I need to get back into a Speedo! The best thing about being pregnant…is everything feels so special. Feeling the baby move inside me is truly a miracle. I want to have more children…at least three; four would be wonderful. I think my husband would have five if we could. Mothers who are role models for me…my mom, for sure, and Casey’s mom, too. I also admire athlete moms that are able to balance family and career, like Mia Hamm and Gabrielle Reece. They make it seem effortless—even though I know that it’s not. I will definitely not…be appearing on Dancing with the Stars, but I will watch it all day long if Misty is on it! —Joelle Klein

Relationships

When there are no words

Stumped for what to say when a friend miscarries? You can still give her support—but do it sensitively When I miscarried my second pregnancy, a few of my girlfriends were an incredible source of comfort. One cried and prayed with me over the phone when I told her I’d miscarried; another sent a beautiful bouquet of flowers with a sweet note. Others weren’t as helpful. I know it was unintentional, but their comments were as hurtful as they were mysterious. In the weeks following my miscarriage, every time one friend saw me she asked, “How are you feeeeeeling?” I tried to stay calm and remember that she just didn’t know how to handle the loss of my baby, but still I thought: Does she think I have the flu? Why doesn’t she just say the word miscarriage? If you too find yourself unable to relate or help a friend in the wake of her miscarriage, take this advice.

Tackling the myths More women experience miscarriages than people may realize. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, as many as 25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. In healthy women of childbearing age, the chance of miscarriage is 15% to 20%. So, your likelihood of knowing someone who’ll go through one is pretty high. Despite this, many women avoid discussing their loss because

By Nicole Russell

they feel a sense of shame or responsibility for it. Amy Zavatto, co-author of Miscarriage, Medicine & Miracles—Everything You Need To Know About Miscarriage, has had five miscarriages in six years. She says friends can help combat the myths that miscarriage can be triggered by something the mother did, like going for a jog. “You can tell [your friend] with fairly good authority there’s nothing she did,” Zavatto says.

What more to say If you’ve never had a miscarriage and don’t know how your friend feels, it might be hard to help her open up. Still, don’t avoid the subject; just choose your words carefully. Many people say things that are hurtful only because they seem insincere. Bethany Rinn, a 27-year-old elementary music teacher in Fort Worth, TX, said that after she miscarried, many fellow teachers would offer pat comments like: “You know that was God’s best.” Rinn knew her friends meant well, but she wished they’d shown more tact. “If you haven’t experienced [a miscarriage] it’s offensive to say, ‘I know how you’re feeling.’ But you can say, ‘I’m sorry you’re hurting and I wish I could make it better.’ ” Zavatto urges girlfriends not to push past the hurt and try to p re g n a n c y 3 6 0.c o m

solve their friend’s problem, even if they feel pressure to fix what’s wrong. “Don’t try to be Nancy Drew,” she says. Zavatto adds that true friends won’t jump to the assumption that fertility treatments are the next step, and will instead simply ask: “Where have you and your husband considered going from here?” Likewise, Zavatto thinks you should feel comfortable mentioning your pregnancy, to break down any barriers between you and your friend who is mourning the loss of one. “I appreciated if a friend was pregnant and she mentioned her pregnancy. They weren’t ignoring it, [but] they were acknowledging what had happened to me, allowing us to not have this wall.”

Stand by For the most part, women just want a girlfriend who supports them, whether it’s with what you say or what you do. For instance, friends talked Jodie Kudlo, of Ankeny, IA, through her post-miscarriage grief. “It helped to talk to people who had gone through the same thing before—my sister had had one also. I’d start crying a lot when I talked about it, but it helped to have people who were supportive and would talk with me about it.” Zavatto’s friends supported her through all five miscarriages, one in a particularly tangible way. “When I miscarried, one girlfriend came to my D & C with me. She came home with me, and set me up with magazines and mac and cheese.” If this kind of attention sounds overwhelming, remember: Your friend probably doesn’t expect a three-course meal, nor does she want to sob on your shoulder for the entire afternoon. After my miscarriage, a girlfriend watched my son for me during

Whether you come through with goodies, flowers, or just a hug, being there will help her know her friends have her back, even in the toughest times. Dad is the new mom

Step up and get peed on Like life, raising children is messy, unpredictable, and often unpleasant We all hope our children will sleep 8 hours at a stretch, potty train at 6 months, eat neatly and quietly, and smile sweetly for Grandma. But where’s the fun in that? Remember, if it’s never hard, it can’t get any better. You have to play in the dirt before you can go to the dance. Fortunately dads are hard-wired to enjoy this part. But fathers face the temptation of sitting back and idly supporting our wives who are doing, pardon the expression, the heavy lifting. She carries the baby and breastfeeds, and we prepare to run to the pharmacy for the 17th time, order take-out, and wander around feeling a little useless until the kids go out for little league. I’m here to tell you that what looks like drudgery is actually the fun stuff—and if you get involved, it will pay off years from now in great memories and stronger relationships with your kids. Looking back, my fondest memories are almost always the unplanned, messy incidents. Take diaper changing. If you hold the baby for a few moments and pass her back to your wife for changing, you’remissingsomethingbesidesasingularlymaleficent odor. It’s hard to forget getting peed on, but it only happens if you are actually changing the diaper. It doesn’t happen while you’re sitting on the couch watching football. I remember going away for a long weekend after we had our third daughter. Upon arriving home Sunday night, I went to changeherdiapertofinditweighingjustslightlylessthananew SUV. I couldn’t remember changing her diaper since we had left home on Friday, so I asked my wife when she had last changed the baby’s diaper. She admitted, with just a little guilt, that she thought I had

By Danny Softness

taken care of that particular chore since Friday. Being a third child, my daughter uttered not a peep all weekend, happily being carried (though a little heavier each time) to and from family activities, eating, smiling, and apparently digesting everything quite thoroughly. When we look back we howl with laughter. We can’t even remember whether she got diaper rash but if she did, it cleared up and now she wants a car. Relish the pacing. Don’t avoid restaurants until your baby is old enough to behave. You’ll have to wait until she’s 30 and married with children of her own. Go out now. If you ever want to return to that restaurant, tip big because she’ll make a mess. Walk her around the block while your wife eats if the baby’s too loud. You’ll mumble to yourself and your back will ache a little; you’ll even curse that you’re not at your league softball game. But you’ll be glad later. Chicken parmigiana eaten in shifts is much more fun than microwave dinners at home. Kids instinctively remember who spent time with them, who talked to them, and who held them when they cried. And they will cry—a lot. Your child will amaze you and elicit feelings you’ve never had before. This might also scare the daylights out of you, but the best way to respond is to get more involved. Backing away only prolongs the anxiety. Get dirty.

Danny Softness is married and a father of three teenage daughters. He and his wife are co-owners of seven Gymboree Play & Music franchises in Atlanta.

Nanny Stella

It’s 5:00 already? Perspective and planning are the keys to enjoying those eternal afternoons with a newborn By Nanny Stella of Nanny 911

One of my biggest frustrations when I go to help parents on my TV show, Nanny 911, is that I can see that their lives would be so much more manageable and enjoyable with the addition of a schedule or some routine. Yet, some people can’t believe I have the audacity to suggest it to them. When you open your mind to establishing routine, you’re ensuring that you get as much enjoyment as you possibly can out of each day with your newborn. The alternative? Greeting your partner at the door in hysterical tears because you haven’t even showered yet. Well now, that doesn’t sound very pleasant.

Food for thought You better be thinking about all this before you even leave the hospital with that new bundle of joy. And while surrounded by “known experts,” you should be getting as much help and advice as possible. Take advantage of the nurses and lactation consultants and ask them to check if you’re nursing correctly. It can be extremely overwhelming if you get home and you are having a hard time with latch or sore nipples. The nursing experience is meant to be enjoyable, not teeth-clenching; not being able to feed a baby successfully can be a huge drain on a new mother. When it’s time to breastfeed, sit down with a full glass of water and a nutritious snack. Your job is to meet the needs of your baby but at the same time you must take care of yourself. If you aren’t eating

or drinking enough, you won’t be able to do both. This is a great time to have skin-on-skin contact with the baby. Studies have shown that this closeness between mother and baby reduces crying, improves mother-baby interaction, and helps the feeding process be more successful.

Let’s be practical In my village when I was growing up, there was a saying: “Sleep when the baby sleeps.” As hard as it may be to turn off your mind about those undone dishes or that load of laundry, you are going to feel like a P.O.W. tortured with sleep deprivation, so take those naps! And before you start complaining about the lack of sleep, don’t bother, it is just one of the battle scars of parenthood. Involve dad in a rotation. Even if you’re breastfeeding, you may have a fussy baby or simply one that needs changing or burping in between feeds; and if you take it in turns, it halves the workload. Maybe when your husband is off work on the weekends, you can sleep in and he can do the morning shift? Forget the maybe—get him to do it! When baby comes home, it’s a great time to set some boundaries for your new family. Put a sign on the door, “Baby sleeping, please knock gently.” And don’t forget to change the answering machine message that you are enjoying time with your newborn. Check the messages later.

Tip: When you want to take a shower, you can wheel the bassinet or bouncy seat into the bathroom.

Set for success Lower your expectations—everyday tasks like housework, shopping, and errands are not a matter of life and death. Set attainable goals for yourself, like getting showered, getting dressed, or returning one phone call or answering one email. This will help you feel that you have achieved something. For example, when you want to take a shower, you can wheel the bassinet or bouncy seat into the bathroom or leave the baby under the watchful eye of one of those visitors who may still be loitering. Get outside, even if it is for a small walk around the block. The baby is portable, whether you use a sling or the stroller. Sit in the garden, visit a friend, and do whatever it takes to get you out of the

house, if just for 15 minutes each day. Keep the diaper bag stocked and ready to go—the last thing you want is to be out and about with no clean diapers! Your minimum routine is to care for your baby, sleep and eat when you need to, and enjoy your baby as much as you can. The time goes by so quickly. You’ll be taking her to kindergarten before you know it. Nanny Stella, celebrity family consultant, author, and star of Nanny 911, is well-known for her no-nonsense approach in helping families. Advice from Dr. Weiss This month: Seriously, a C-section? Stephen H. Weiss, M.D., is an assistant professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta

I’m in my second trimester and the doctor suspects I have placenta previa. Will I have to have a C-section? I wish there were some way around it. You might not have to have surgery—if it turns out you don’t have placenta previa. The condition causes the placenta to overlap your cervix, which needs to dilate to allow delivery of the baby. The concern is that as the cervix dilates, the placenta could tear and bleed, which is dangerous for you, the mother. But the relationship of the placenta to the cervix isn’t as clear in your second trimester as it is when you get close to full term. This is because by the middle trimester, your placenta has already grown large in size, but your uterus will expand a lot more before you deliver. So, it can be difficult to determine by ultrasound where the placenta is actually growing into the uterus or just touching it. At 27 weeks, there’s still a 51% chance that what your doctor’s seeing isn’t really a previa. There are several types of placenta previa: “Total” means the cervix is completely covered, while “partial,” “marginal,” and “low-lying” mean the obstruction is less than complete. If your doctor already sees total previa, the odds may not be as sunny that it will resolve itself. As your uterus enlarges, your ob/gyn should be able to tell if you really have placenta previa. Once you’re at 28 weeks, if you still have a possible diagnosis, your doctor may put you on pelvic rest, which means no sex or pelvic exams, and possibly limit your exercise. And if it turns out that you do have placenta previa, a C-section will be the safest way to deliver.

Doula Jill Says This month: Separation anxiety Jill Wodnick, M.A., (jillwodnick.com) is a certified doula, prenatal instructor, and owner of Montclair Maternity, a New Jersey childbirth education center

I’m very anxious about my baby being separated from me in the hospital. What can I do? You have strong and powerful maternal instincts! When a firsttime mom can say out loud in her pregnancy that she wants to stay with her baby, she’s activating a powerful mothering space within. Anxiety is often a sign of deep body wisdom. My first advice would be to recognize this cue. The period immediately after delivery is very much a crucial time. Evidence is clear that skin-to-skin contact between babies and mothers makes for optimal hormonal exchanges, better temperature regulation, fewer stress hormones, and more stable blood sugar levels. Babies also have an easier time breastfeeding when they’re not separated from their mothers. So, your first task is to call the labor and delivery nurse manager at your hospital and determine its standard of care for a healthy baby. Many offer 24-hour rooming in, which keeps mothers and babies together. Other facilities require a four-hour nursery stay, when the baby’s heart rate and temperature stabilization is examined away from mom. If your hospital follows the latter course, consider a different location, or at the very least inquire about whether these procedures could be delayed a few hours so you can be with your baby. Also, communicate with your partner about when you want visits outside of medical staff. Family and friends may be loving and supportive, but many first-time moms have later told me they regret not taking more time with just their partners and babies. For the first few hours, as you hold and rock your baby, sing lullabies, and recover together, you may need and want privacy. It’s a very emotionally intimate time, and a powerful threshold you’re crossing, from partners to parents. Think about it.

Ask Dr. Dana This month: Your M-I-L in the house Lisa Dana, M.D., is a pediatrician at Golden Gate Pediatrics in San Francisco and a clinical faculty member at University of California, San Francisco

My mother-in-law has offered to come and stay with us for two weeks after our new baby comes. She’s a nice woman, and an excellent cook, but shouldn’t my husband and I bond with our baby alone for the first few weeks?

The Wait is Over! Introducing The World’s First At Home Gender Detection Test! IntelliGender’s Gender Prediction Test™ (G.P.T.) is designed for easy home use by expectant mothers curious about their baby’s gender. G.P.T. is a simple-to-use urine test that can be performed as early as 6 weeks following the first day of your missed period and provides clear results in just 10 minutes! Now Available At www.intelligender.com

This is one of my favorite questions. You see, you’re a lucky new mom and just don’t know it yet. I’m not sure who started the myth that new parents need weeks alone at home to bond with their baby, but it’s a bad one. I’m always so grateful to the extended family when they come to the first office visit with the new parents. When you’re discharged from the hospital, you likely haven’t slept well in three or four days; you’re recovering from delivery; and nursing and caring for your baby is still so new. Your partner can be a huge help—but it takes many hands. He’s thrown into the role of caring for this entire new little family while you recuperate and focus on the baby. Why not let your mother-in-law be there to lend a hand? She can be an extra set of arms to hold your child so you can finally sleep; cook you healthy, nourishing meals; and tidy up so you don’t get distracted by what a mess the house is. We’re meant to have babies with aunts, mothers, and sisters within walking distance, but because of how our world is today, we’re often on the other side of the country from those special people. Accept your mother-in-law’s help, especially since you seem to like her, and let her come during the first few weeks. You’ll need her, and you’ll be sad to see her go—I promise.

There, I said it

A heads-up would’ve been nice A short list of things I wish my friends had told me about pregnancy By Nancy O’Dell

Before I spill the beans, let me first say that I loved being pregnant. I loved knowing I had a small being growing inside of me, watching my body change, and feeling my baby girl hiccup. And hey, what’s not to love about getting huge knockers overnight? It’s like a free boob job! But what I didn’t love were all of those surprises—some terrifying, others just downright embarrassing—that left me constantly asking, “Why didn’t ya’ll friggin’ tell me that was gonna happen?” Honestly, it was as if my friends had come down with postpartum amnesia. By the way, I read practically every book on pregnancy, and still, there were so many things that went unmentioned. For instance, I had to learn the hard way (no pun intended) that headlights—you know, hard nipples—can be a side effect of pregnancy. It sure would have been nice if someone had warned me about this before I arrived on the set of Grey’s Anatomy to conduct an interview, looking a little too happy to see Doctors McDreamy and McSteamy. And the night I woke up with scream-inducing leg cramps? It was then that my husband, who has two boys from his first marriage, sleepily mentioned, “Oh, yes, that happens with pregnancy.” Wait just a minute, even my husband participated in the don’t-ask-don’t-tell pregnancy policy? Then there was the terrifying time in my third trimester that my chest broke out in these little red dots. Measles! Mumps? No, it turns out that I just had scary-looking spots. My doctor said something about pregnant woman having so much more blood in their bodies and that I was actually seeing the end of my blood vessels. OK, fine, but what about that other set of dots? Who knew that your breasts can leak before you give birth? Not I! I had to find out when my cameraman kindly panned away to keep me from revealing the two wet spots forming on my blouse. And clearly no one thought to tell me about the breast pads you can buy specifically for this situation. Don’t even get me started on how I thought breastfeeding would be completely instinctive. It’s not. There’s a specific technique to latching the baby onto your breast, plus numerous holding positions. Honestly, I felt like I needed a football playbook...and indeed, there is actually a nursing position called the “football hold.” There are tricks to getting your baby to take a pacifier, the proper way to swaddle, and a correct amount of times a baby is supposed to poop and pee in a day. My point: There are countless issues that come up both pre- and post-pregnancy, so in an effort to help out my fellow women, I wrote a book about it!
