MIGHTY MUFFLER & BRAKE SHOPS
Nearly 40 years ago, Linda Van Dover transformed overnight from a stay-at-home mom to the owner and manager of her first Mighty Muffler & Brake Shop. She knew little about managing a business – and even less about mufflers and brakes. Making matters worse, the all-male staff at the original Lawrenceville location was slow to accept a woman owner. Today, Linda manages an operation that consists of seven stores in the Atlanta area, including the Conyers location. “Our headquarters is also in Conyers,” says Linda, “housed in the home my husband and I have lived in since we moved to the area in 1979.”
In those days, Linda and her husband, Joe, were silent partners with Joe’s sister and brother-in-law in a Midas shop in Athens, GA, as well as three independent muffler shops in the Atlanta area. When the brother-in-law left Georgia to pursue other business opportunities, the Van Dovers acquired the Lawrenceville Mighty Muffler. When Linda took over operation of the muffler shop, “I became this person who had to go to work every day – including Saturdays when my husband was babysitting our two children.” It wasn’t long before the Van Dovers added another shop, this one in Decatur, to their first location. Another location quickly followed, and over the years, their operation has grown to seven stores. The Conyers location was the newest addition in 1996 and was the first of the shops to open in a new building. “I’ve learned a lot through all these years that I’ve worked with
people,” says Linda. “I’ve had to learn not just about running a business but also about how to work with customers and employees.” Early on, Linda realized that many automotive shops are intimidating to women. So she’s worked hard to create facilities where women feel welcome. Not only do Mighty Muffler shops look inviting and comfortable for women, Linda even goes a step beyond. “I always thought about opening up a shop and having women mechanics,” says Linda. So, in fact, Mighty Muffler employs a female mechanic at its Campbellton Road location in Atlanta. “It’s not that I target women,” Linda adds, “but women should feel like they can go into an establishment and be confident that it’s a reputable place and feel comfortable waiting there for their car to be repaired.” All Mighty Muffler locations offer exhaust, brake and front-end service, while the Conyers location also offers emissions testing and repair, fuel injection service, shocks, air conditioning service, oil and lube, and coolant flush.
