50YEARSOFSCI ENCE & 50SCI ENTI STS
50 Years of Science & 50 Scientists is an e-zine (a magazine available only in electronic form, for example on the internet) published by the students of year 5 of Primary Education at Saint Domingo de Guzmán School in Palencia (Spain). Our student´s book is about an e-zine and the characters, in each unit, have to investigate about different topics and they have to write an article. The students have chosen this tittle for our e-zine because this year we are celebrating the 50th birthday of our school and there are 50 children of them (in two classrooms) who have felt as really scientists investigating about different themes. As the final project of this course the students have done the same, firstly, in groups they had to choose the topic they were going to work about, this topic had to be related to an article in our book but it had to be different, for example there was an article about materials, one group chose to work about silver; another article is about London and another group has worked about Las Vegas, another city,…. Then, they had to look for information at home about the chosen theme, bring the information to school and, in groups, put it in common and write an article (Cooperative learning). Finally the articles had been published. We hope you like it and you enjoy reading our e-zine.

AIR POLLUTION Poor air quality due to smoke and noxious gases can have devastating effects on the bird population in dense areas.
Air pollution can be harmful to all animals, for example, the butterflies, seagulls, pelicans or even eagles.
Air pollution can affect the daily life of these animals because the polluting particles can adhere to their feathers and their lungs.
The more toxic spills we throw into nature, the worse life animals will have, that is the reason, we, the children, ask adults to stop. Because we are killing our world using vehicles, factories,… not recycling. Using plastic and throwing them to the sea We love animals, and we want to take care of them and protect them, so we will take care of our world. The Chernobyl disaster
The Chernobyl disaster or the Chernobyl accident, was a catastrophic nuclear accident. It occurred on 25–26 April 1986 in the nuclear central Vladimir llich Lenin, in northern Ukrainian . An increased incidence of cancer. Spontaneous abortion. Possible genetic effects. Food contamination Radioactive iodine was deposited in pastures eaten by cows who then concentrated it in their milk which was subsequently ingested by children.
Environmental impact: Chemichal pollution because there is a large amount of radiation into the atmosphere. Animals living in contaminated areas in and around Chernobyl have suffered from a variety of side effects caused by radiation, for example Invertebrate populations significantly decreased.
A large swath of pine forest killed by acute radiation was named the Red Forest
Some scientists fear that radioactivity will affect the local population for the next several generations.

Fried blood The fried blood is typical of Spain. It´s elaborated of blood. This looks like black pudding
S´mores It is easy. They are usually cooked, outdoor, around a campfire. You need chocolate marshmallows and some biscuits or bread.
Seswaa It is a traditional Botsuana meat dish made from goat, chicken or lamb.
White worms They are large White worms that eat Wood. Its flavor is similar to the taste of the nut.
Crispy tarantulas: Its taste is good, it looks like a mixture of chicken and fish.

RECYCLING WHAT IS RECLYCLING? Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects.
WHY IS RECICLYNG SO IMPORTANT? Nowadays, society has got a serious problem with rubbish. Many animals are dying.
Don’t throw away, recycle for another day.
CONTAMINATING MATERIALS CARBON WASTE The high levels of mercury in the air are serious to the health.
LEAD-ACID BATTERIES These batteries are composed of sulfuric acid. Generating more dangerous and highly contaminated materials.

The duck-billed platypus is a semiaquatic endemic mammal. Its weight is 60 kg and it is between 40 and 60 cm tall. It has otter legs, beaver tail and duck peak.
They haven´t got mamas and they feed their offspring sweating milk.
They eat insects, fish, plants and herb.
They have hard venom in their back legs.
They can live to 17 years, they can lay from 1 to 3 eggs along their life. They are the ones of the only 3 mammals which lay legs.
It lives in Tasmania region (Australia), in cold caves made by themselves. They were discovered by some hunters because they wanted their skin in Europe in 1798.

Silver is the most abundant precious metal in the Earth. It has been very important in the human history. It was founded in 1516. Skelton is a winter sport, it is considered the first slide sport. It´s one of the oldest sports. The first country which used it was Switzerland in 1905. Just one person goes in the sled, must falls with the head at first. The person goes upside down and descends from head. The sled can overcome the 100km / h.
Equipment:
Helmet with special protection at chin height, it must also have glasses or protective visor.
His footwear also has small spikes in the sole to promote grip during the race.

Jump The high jump is an athletic test. Its purpose is to pass a horizontal bar.
Race 100 m smooth is an athletic race on a level ground, free of all obstacles, as quickly as possible. It is considered, in general, as he most important speed racing competition.
Throws The javelin throw is a track and field event where the javelin, a spear about 2.5 m in length, is thrown. The javelin thrower gains momentum by running within a predetermined area.

It´s been so long that if you see the first episode and the last one you will see radical changes in the animation and some voices.

POLLUTION IN AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS Pollution in aquatic ecosystem is a great problem because we aren´t very careful of it. The aquatic especies die. 1,5 million of aquatic especies die each year because we throw away plastic bags in any place.

The impact of rubbish in aquatic ecosystems. The most important impact is fish eats rubbish and the fishermen catch infected fish and we eat those infected animals
How to help to reduce this pollution? -Raise awareness - The three Rs -Don´t throw the rubbish in the wrong place.
The Prestige accident. On the 13th of November in 2002 there was an accident in Galician coast, causing terrible consequences because of the spills of oils. That accident was in A Coruña and affected Spanish, French and Portuguese coasts.

SWIMMING Mireia Belmonte She was born on the 10th of November, 1990 in Badalona, Barcelona (Spain). She is the best swimmer in Spain, she has gold medal in Rio de Janeiro 2017, 200m butterfly
