Bug Bug deals with marginal characters who, at the outset, are struggling just to make it day-to-day in a scrubby Western wasteland. Tracy Letts’ tale of love, paranoia and government conspiracy is a thought-provoking psycho-thriller that mixes terror and laughter at a fever pitch. Tracy Letts’ dark comedy takes place in a seedy motel room outside Oklahoma City, where Agnes, a drug-addicted cocktail waitress, tortured by the kidnapping of her child in a supermarket almost ten years ago, is hiding from her ex-husband. A friend introduces her to Peter, a handsome drifter with a military past and psychotic tendencies. They soon begin a relationship that takes place almost entirely within the increasingly claustrophobic confines of her motel room. Peter’s delusions infect Agnes and the tension mounts as mysterious strangers appear at their door, past events haunt them at every turn and they are attacked by real bugs. Tracy Letts is an award-winning playwright and actor and a longstanding ensemble member with Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago. As a playwright, Letts’ work includes Killer Joe, Bug and The Man From Nebraska. He was a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was named as one of Time’s “Best of 2003”. Tracy Letts won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for his play August: Osage County. A movie version of Bug, directed by William Friedken (The Exorcist) and starring Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon, who originated the role of Peter off Broadway, was released in 2007. By choosing this play, which explores the rules and madnesses of the fear-generation, Anne Simon, young promising Luxembourgish director, introduces in Luxembourg one of the most thrilling voices of the contemporary American drama. Vom Krieg der Geschlechter Begleitlesung zur Aufführung von Wer hat Angst vor Viginia Woolf…? Kriege werden nicht allein auf dem Schlachtfeld ausgetragen – auch das eigene Wohnzimmer kann zum Schlachtfeld werden, wenn Mann und Frau aufeinander treffen. Der Krieg der Geschlechter ist wahrscheinlich so alt wie die Menschheit selbst und immer wieder haben Dichter und Schriftsteller versucht diese alltägliche Form der Gewalt, die keine Armeen und Geschütze braucht, sondern bloß einen Mann und, wie Georg Büchner es nennt, „das Gegenteil davon“, zu beschreiben. In einer Lesung, in der sich die unterschiedlichsten Autoren begegnen, wird das Publikum gemeinsam mit den Schauspielern hinabsteigen in die Ehehölle, wird es zum Zeugen von „Szenen einer Ehe“ und von Momenten männlich-weiblicher Duelle, die auf ebenso intelligente und scharfsinnige, wie auf amüsante und verblüffende Art und Weise geschildert werden. Dabei wird ein Bogen gespannt von der Antike und dem Alten Testament bis zur Gegenwart, in dem der Jahrhunderte währende und immer noch aktuelle Krieg der Geschlechter in immer wieder neuen und vielfältigen Formen in meist höchst kunstvoller Sprache ausgetragen wird.
