Belgian cinema’s unique flavours are revealed in this second selection of films. The choice ranges from the brilliantly creative animation of (Luxembourg co-production) Panique au Village to the subversive dark comedy-Horror of C’est arrivé près de chez vous to the beautifully poetic Little Baby Jesus of Flandr (photo). ome truly great films have been made about chefs, centred on expansive dinners or have involved food as a central theme. The best of these are such visceral experiences that they leave the audience salivating and hungry to taste the food they have seen on screen. On three different evenings during the Ciné-Culinaria programme audiences will have a chance to do just that. The film and food programme opens with Juzo Itami’s delightful paean to the art of making and eating noodle soup Tampopo. Stanley Tucci and Scott Campbell then take audiences into their bitter-sweet Italian restaurant drama Big Night – which includes one of the best final scenes of any film. And chocoholics will adore diving again into Lasse Hallström’s romantic adaptation of Chocolat. We should be grateful the programme does not include Delicatessen. Other films in the programme, screened sans dégustation, include the sumptuous Babette’s Feast, Ang Lee’s romantic comedy Eat Drink Man Woman, angst-ridden German comedy Bella Martha and French historical drama Les 1001 recettes du cuisinier amoureux. Screening Youth Culture
Turkish director Semih Kaplanoglu’s minimalist film, Bal (Honey), won the Golden Bear in Berlin this year. It centres on six-year old Yusuf, a boy fascinated by the mysteries of his surrounding landscape, but who becomes increasingly concerned when his beekeeper father fails to return from collecting honey in the forest. Kaplanoglu will be present at the screening. Le film minimaliste du réalisateur turc Semih Kaplanoglu, Bal (Miel), a remporté l’Ours d’or du festival de Berlin 2010. L’histoire est celle du petit Yusuf, six ans, fasciné par les mystères de la nature. Quand son père apiculteur ne revient pas d’une expédition en forêt pour collecter du miel, le petit garçon est plongé dans le désarroi. Semih Kaplanoglu sera présent lors de la projection.
General coordinator at the Ministry of Culture Bob Krieps has chosen Richard Lester’s 1964 Beatles film A Hard Day’s Night to represent youth culture. The film captures the band as Beatlemania reaches its hysteric height (the concert sequence is packed with sexual energy) and the loveable quartet seem on the cusp of emerging from innocence. Bob Krieps, coordinateur général au ministère de la Culture, a choisi le film de Richard Lester sur les Beatles, A Hard Day’s Night (1964), pour représenter la culture des jeunes. Le film suit le groupe à l’apogée hystérique de la Beatlemania (la séquence du concert vibre d’énergie et d’érotisme) alors que l’attachant quatuor semble tout juste sortir de l’âge de l’innocence.

es grands chefs, les fastueux dîners et plus généralement la thématique liée à la nourri ture ont inspiré quelques chefs-d’œuvre cinématographiques. Les meilleurs d’entre eux ont un tel effet sur les sens qu’ils laissent les spectateurs littéralement sur leur faim. Le programme des trois soirées Ciné-Culinaria leur permettra de se rassasier. Le festival du film consacré à la nourriture s’ouvre sur un hymne savoureux à l’art de confectionner et déguster la soupe de nouilles : Tampopo, de Juzo Itami. Stanley Tucci et Scott Campbell inviteront ensuite le spectateur au restaurant italien pour goûter le charme doux-amer de Big Night – dont la scène finale est un morceau d’anthologie. Les accros du chocolat replongeront avec délices dans le Chocolat de Lasse Hallström. Mais heureusement, Delicatessen n’est pas au programme ! À voir également, mais sans dégustation : le somptueux Festin de Babette, la comédie romantique de Ang Lee Eat Drink Man Woman, la comédie allemande Bella Martha et la comédie historique française Les 1001 recettes du cuisinier amoureux.
