Jim Daniels of Brenham, TX, stood Gay Bar King for Jim Springer for several years. Daniels remembers breeding a lot of mares over those years. He says that Gay Bar King was a successful sire because, “one of the greatest things about him was that you could breed him with a variety of mares. You could breed any cross and that was the beautiful thing about him.” Daniels admittedly preferred mares
Dix R Turnbox described Gay Bar King sired foals' ability as “very cowy, with a long smooth sweeping motion.”

Turnbow found that Gay Bar King sired foals were very solid and easy to train. “Once they were trained, they were very solid, making an excellent mount for the Non-Pro,” he noted. He described their ability as “very cowy, with a long smooth sweeping motion.”

with King P-234 blood to the others. Daniels stressed that you could not get too much King P-234 breeding crossed with Gay Bar King. Three excellent examples are Gay Tom, Gay Bar Blues and Gay Bar’s Gen. Gay Tom was an NCHA Bronze Award winner with earnings of $22,717. He was out of King’s Punkin, an own daughter of King P-234. King’s Punkin was out of Red Molly B, who was sired by Gravis Horse by Chicaro. The second dam of King’s Punkin was listed as a Sorrel Mare by a horse known as a Little Joe Colt. Three time NCHA World Champion Non-Pro Cutting Horse Gay Bar Blues and his full sister, Nellie Gay, are out of Nellie Gray Ann, a granddaughter of Poco Bueno by King P-234. Nellie Gray Ann was out of Melody Ann by Sugar King.

Dix R. Turnbow, Brenham, TX, had a great deal of success with the Gay Bar King bred cutting horses. He won the NCHA Non-Pro World Championship three times riding Gay Bar Blues. Turnbow noted that Gay Bar King was a Three Bars stud out of a King P-234 mare. “One of the very best King mares to ever live,” he said. Turnbow explained that Gay Bar King got his producing ability from combining Three Bars and King because “they were two of the greatest performance horse sires to ever live.”
According to Turnbow, “Gay Bar King's success as a broodmare sire is based on his daughters inheriting that long smooth sweeping motion and passing it on to their foals.” He found that this “long sweeping motion” was an excellent blend with the “handiness of the Doc Bar bred horses.” The ability of Gay Bar King to cross with mares carrying the blood of King P-234 and Doc Bar is evident in Gay Bar’s Gen. Gay Bar’s Gen by Gay Bar King is out of the double bred King mare Princess Piper. Princess Piper was by El Rebo King by King P-234. She was out of Sandpiper by Bay Bob by King P-234. This gives Gay Bar’s Gen a 3 X 3 X 4 breeding pattern to King P-234. Gay Bar’s Gen carried Carol Rose to three NCHA Non-Pro World Champion titles and one NCHA NonPro Reserve World Championship. She has garnered the NCHA Bronze and Silver Awards with $37,639 in earnings. She also earned 74 AQHA cutting points to earn a Superior.
