The Hive : Living and Learning Community Thesis | Fall 2018 Professor | Dr. Laura Cole Software | Revit, Photoshop Backstory | My sister has a rare form of mutation on the Grin2B

gene which causes autistic-like symptoms. She also has the mental acuity of a ďŹ ve year old so she will never be able to to live by herself. My parents are concerned that when they pass away, she could be surrendered to the state and placed somewhere far away from her friends and without the routine she has come to know. This living and learning community was created for her and her friends, so that they wil never have to move away from their routines and each other. will

Objective | The closest autistic living facility from Belleville, IL

is four hours away. Autistic people need a consistent routine, when they are forced to deviate, it unbalances them and causes them to stress out. The solution is to create assisted living spaces where they can live out the duration of their lives.

Concept | The Hive Living and Learning Community provides

the comforts of home while giving parents and guardians peace of mind. Residents on the Autism Spectrum will come together to live, work, and play in harmony. The design is inspired by bees and how they interact together to create communities. At The Hive, residents have opportunities to develop their social and life skills while interacting with the surrounding community.

The colored concrete in the cafe floor creates visual interest by mimicking bee communication. Bees dance to communicate love, new food sources, and excitement.

Cafe

The cafe acts as a meeting point between the residents and the surrounding community. The residents are able to improve several learning and developmental skills by working here and the community is reminded of the fact that the residents are people who have a unique view of the world.

Common Room

Autistic people have a different perception of space than most people. What you or I could consider large, a person with autism might see as small. The colored strips in the ceiling are a wayfinding technique and were inspired by the pheromone trails of bees. The different colors lead to certain areas of the building: yellow - apartment wing, green - learning wing, and yellow green - further shared spaces

Millwork

The shelves have a variety of dierent uses. They were primarily esigned to hold books and knickknacks.

The maximum amount of bedrooms per apartment is two. This allows each resident to get as much light as possible.

When certain autistic people stim*, they have the propensity to lope*. To prevent this, the design incorporates large benches that act as barriers.

Lope: “run or move with a long bounding stride.”

Metropolis Hotel - Dublin Studio II | Spring 2017 Professor | Mr. Mohammad Dastmalchi Software | SketchUP, Photoshop, 3DS Max Objective | Design the lobby of the Metropolis Hotel based on an international city. The site is located across the street from the River Liffey on the corner of Bachelor’s Walk and O’Connell Street Lower. This is a bustling area of Dublin proper and is ideally located for all of the unique Dublin attractions like the Temple Bar area ( a few blocks East) and Trinity College (a few blocks South). Concept | The space is designed to emulate Irish hospitality by using the various colors of the Irish countryside. The materials used are sustainable and evoke the same materials that the Irish people have been using for thousands of years.

Additional Information | Warm wood tones and colorful

green carpet welcome the guest into the Metropolis Hotel Dublin. White couches and large organic tables emulate the Irish countryside as a leafy wall behind the concierge desk brings an element of Irish greenery inside.

The Elemental Bus Shelter True/False Film Festival | Fall 2016 Professor | Mr. Michael Goldschmidt Software | SketchUP Objective | Create a bus shelter for the True/False Film Festival that was safe and sturdy, yet under $50. Concept | The theme for the 2016 True/False Film Festival was

“Out of the Ether. In response to this, we collaboratively designed the Elemental Bus Shelter. The two elements chosen were iron (present in the galvanized steel) and carbon (indicated by the blackened wood). To increase visual interest, the steel was oxidized using hydrochloric acid and then quickly treated using hydrogen peroxide to rust the metal. The bench was designed to form the initials T/F which let patrons know what the shelter was for.

Team | Mikaela Mongeon, Jack Castulik, Lexi Donahue, Emily

Magruder, Erica Dorhauer, Rachel Oatney, Ying Zhu, Randi Lacy, and Carrie Richards For this project, I took the role of project manager. I oversaw the initial design and was the main presenter for the meeting with the True/False committee. Once approved, I oversaw the acquirement of materials, the build, and the oxidization of the metal panels.

The Mizzou Experience Studio III | Fall 2017 Professor | Dr. Bimal Balakrishnan Software | SketchUP, Photoshop Objective | Create a moving advertisement for the University of Missouri that encompasses the essence of Mizzou. Concept | The Mizzou Experience focuses on the four tenets of

Mizzou: Respect, Responsibility, Discovery, and Excellence. The train travels across the United States to potential students who can view unique experiences through virtual reality in the Experience car, chat with friends in the dining car, and talk with professors and alumni in the Excellence car.

Asymmetry Studio I | Fall 2016 Professor | Mr. Mohamad Dastmalchi Software | Photoshop Objective | Only using a set amount of wooden materials and a previously created 3x3 cube, create a 9x9 cube that compliments the 3x3 cube. Concept | The design is based on the idea of asymmetry

created through the use of visibility and movement. The piece is designed to lead the viewer’s eye by using a 1/4” void as the base module and preventing any large viewing obstacles. Repetition and ascending elements were also incorporated in the design to create the idea of movement throughout the piece by placing different elements at approximately the same heig height.

Angle Lamp Adv. Building Systems Lab | Spring 2018 Professor | Mr. Ben Watkins Software | Concepts Objective | Create a lamp using at least three different materials. The lamp must be under eight cubic feet. Concept | The lamp is made of steel, glass, and concrete. The different pieces of metal appear to be made from one piece of metal, creating a unique angular shape.

Additional Information | The lamp was painted with

copper spray paint and the concrete was painted with a stone texture spray paint to increase visual interest and hide any exisiting flaws.

Concrete Drying Phase

Initial Design Sketches The base was changed to a trapezoid shape because the weight of the metal and the way it was cantilevered would continuously pull the entire lamp over.

Al Bahar Towers Adv. Design Communications | Fall 2017 Professor | Dr. Jong Bum Kim Software | Revit Objective | In Design Communications, we were given the task of recreating a famous building using parametric modeling. The drawings emphasize the moveable facade, which is useful in Abu Dhabi to combat the sun’s extreme rays. Concept | The form’s starting point were two cylindrical towers

that have 29 stories each. The form was sculpted around the core and is narrower at the base and top but wider in the middle. Since temperatures can reach an average of 96 degrees in the summer, the facade was built to manage solar gain. It follows the sun’s movement, opening and closing kinetic panels like giant umbrellas. This idea creates a 50 percent reduction in energy consumption and an 80 percent reduction in solar gain. It also allows for lighter tinted glass, creating uncompromising views.

Additional Information | While looking at a mashrabiya (a

traditional Islamic screen used to cool buildings) they developed the idea of a responsive facade by applying the principles of Islamic geometric composition, which anchored the structure in the Islamic context of Abu Dhabi.
