It is true that in difficult times, innovation is fundamental to weather the economic storm and survive as a castaway that clings to any board that floats so as not to drown. This opinion is also shared by Jordi Vidal when he mentions that "the bulk of artisan artists has increased in recent years with smaller workshops and other ways of producing glass". But the suppression of one of the important centers of spreading the culture of glass does a lot of damage to the glass-making art sector.

It is essential that the public knows the skills that are manifested in the handling of glass so that they know how to value the product that comes out of the hands of the master glassmakers. And also very important: so that they know the differences that exist between crafts and industrial production. Between a single product and one made in series. The Portuguese teacher Alfredo Poeiras says on our Facebook page, in relation to this news of the closing of the workshop of the Spanish People, that "Um dia não muito longínquo não haverá que sopre or vidro manually". An opinion that I consider somewhat radical but that shows the concern that seizes him for the closure and for the retirement of the teacher Juan Asensio. Also Alfredo Piris and Pere Ignasi also show on our Facebook page their opinions on this matter.

The first manifests that it is a pity that with the closure a noble trade and a great tradition of Manchoneros and Artists are lost. The second thinks that when the fire depends on ignorant merchants it is easy to extinguish and the trade is revalued well by the blackout. In short, a sad fact that is added to the numerous disappearances of workshops, artists and craftsmen who used glass as a fundamental element of their productive work.

and orchestrating the creation process without being directly involved.

Volume II — Number 118

Yokoyama works in cycles, alternating between the design and the elaboration of fullsized color drawings and the concentrated combats in the workshop. Try to create unique pieces that present a narrative image to the viewer. When making the pieces, the shape, color and decoration are extremely important and the theme that guides their work is the "glass decoration". Artistic craftsmanship is the basis of his work and, through his work, he tries to expand the limits.

Naoto Yokoyama was born in 1937. He studied metallurgy at the Tokyo University of Art, where he graduated in 1962. His knowledge of glass was acquired thanks to his experience in Joetsu Glass Company in Gunma Prefecture, for which he worked until 1975 before becoming an independent glass designer. The work he has produced since the early 1980s marks a radical departure from the minimalist mode in which he previously worked in his career.

His humorous style, which makes more and more extravagant use of colored glass, is inspired by the latest trends in Italian design. Each component of the work consists of separate pieces of glass that have been merged as part of a coordinated process involving several glass techniques that work in harmony.

This art overlaps with other creative limits that exist at the same time, which leads to a new potential for expression. With the works of Mozart or Picasso, no matter how the cuts, they are still Mozart and Picasso. The feelings, the creative inspiration and the individuality of the artist are rooted in the work. He always expects his own expression in the glass to be like that.

The piece that we Yokoyama hires the staff highlight as "Piece of the and workshop facilities of month" is part of the permanent collection of his former employer, the Museum of Art in Joestu Crystal Glass Glass of AlcorcĂłn and the Company, for the artist has named it "Flor realization of his work. de calibre andante". She delights in her work with sensitivity and modesty with a symbolic depth based on the recognition that no day is a normal day. The decoration "Noodle" literally gives life to his sculptures, models the relief with softness and gives many shades of color, underlining the dynamism of the

Volume II — Number 118

February 2019

On January 18, a talk-talk about one of the elements of the industrial historical heritage of the municipality was held in the Assembly Hall of the City Hall of San Ildefonso: the House of the Polish. A patrimonial value in oblivion, about whose recovery the consistory wants to make pivot one of the cultural axes for the period 2019-2021 and opt for the cultural 1.5. At the moment it is in ruins and for that reason, the mayor has delegated in the now not assigned councilor and president of the artistictechnological Association of Friends of the Glass in the Farm, Ricardo Hernanz, the works of coordination of the project of recovery of this mansion, that began in the summer of 2018 with a first intervention of sanitation, debris and consolidation of the environment.

municipality of San Ildefonso.

The importance of the House of the Polish is that in 1761 hosted the polishing machine of John Dowling, a hydraulic polisher that through wheels and gears allowed to take over the work of 100 workers.

After them, Sonia Fernández Esteban and Amparo Martín Espinosa, components of the firm Groma, spoke about the archaeological study they are doing on the current remains of the building and its surroundings, to try to obtain the most reliable elements that allow knowing the complete structure and composition of the building, as well as the water collection and evacuation system that operated the hydraulic polisher.

All a feat in his time, to the point that D'Alambert and Diderot pointed out in his Encyclopédie as one of the most advanced machines of the eighteenth century. Hence, a good part of the interest is to recover the traces of the hydraulic system (catchment, canals, Cambrones river intakes) both inside and outside. In the talk-colloquium the Mayor of San Ildefonso, José Luís Vázquez Fernández, intervened to present and close the event.

Additionally, and in a fortuitous way, and focusing the work in the whole area, they found defensive systems of the Civil War: bunker, trenches and a shooter's nest, also incorporated into the memory of their work.

Our President and our Secretary were present in Paloma Pastor, director of this talk-colloquium to show the Technological Museum their support for this project, of Glass, and María Jesús The following thing has been Callejo, specialist in Art which, when it can be seen to incorporate the ruin to the History with a long academic completed, will be of great archaeological inventory, for curriculum in her Haber, value and a great which it has proceeded to presented their studies and contribution to the culture of this first prospecting, in glass in our country. conclusions about the charge of the company history, functioning and their The images that were taken GROMA, so much of the assessment of this important of this act can be seen plant of the building, like of heritage value of the through this link.

The flame of one of the last blown glass ovens in Spain has been extinguished for the time being. The specialized workshop in this area of Poble Espanyol has recently closed and during these days the machinery is being dismantled. The site management is now studying various projects and ensures that there will continue to be a space dedicated to the activity of glass. "The concept will be renewed and updated to new times and trends more related to design and art," Poble Espanyol sources point out. It is still unknown if there will be a glass oven and if the current location will be refurbished or this activity will be located in another space.

The blown glass oven with fixed structure and industrial production in the workshop of Poble Espanyol is considered the only one of these characteristics in the city of Barcelona. In the Catalan capital there are other ovens that also work with blown glass but they are mobile, like that of the artist Ferrán Collado, or smaller ones without serial production like those of the 40plumas workshop. Outside Barcelona city and in Catalonia, there are examples similar to the Poble Espanyol workshop with active kilns in the Glass Museum of Vimbodí (Tarragona) or Sant Andreu de la Barca with the company Nat Vidriera. The tradition of glass has had a great importance in Catalonia. "In general, industrial blown glass has dropped dramatically in the last 30 years and large companies in the sector in Badalona or Mataró have disappeared," explains Jordi Vidal, president of the Catalan Association of Glass Arts. On the other hand, Vidal emphasizes that "the bulk" of artisan artists has increased in recent years "with smaller workshops and other ways of producing glass".

"This exhibition is a tribute to Mexico and our ancestors, to ourselves and to the roots that some have forgotten, but which we express to the surface; a way of knowing that we bring in the blood, to the place we honor and with which in the world we are recognized as a deep culture, of wide variety in its forms, colors and flavors, and with an inexhaustible historical legacy ". Saved by a wall In the summer of 1922 the architect Joan Bassegoda i Nonell was directing, at the request of the Board of Works of Santa María del Mar, the restoration of the chapel of San Salvador. During this process it was decided to remove the altarpiece from the chapel in order to undo the window blinded above the altar. At that moment two stained glass windows appeared. Bassegoda immediately noted that it was medieval stained glass, although some parts showed signs of having been restored with techniques and materials of the s. XVII. In addition, he also noted that the other panels that completed the window had the date 1712. For all that it was deduced that the stained glass windows that had been discovered had not been bricked up until at least the middle of the 18th century. Every Saturday, first thing in the morning, the ovens of the Museum of Glass of Cartagena (MAVI) are set in motion for, at eleven o'clock, open their doors to the citizens and show a historical art in the port city: the blowing of the glass to make artistic pieces of excellent quality. This is attested by the history of some of the pieces exhibited in the museum. And, how could it be otherwise, it does so from the fishing district of Santa Lucía and from the handicraft association of glassmakers. There was located the old factory of Santa Lucia, one of the economic engines of Cartagena in the second half of the nineteenth century. Now, from the museum, they try not to miss the practice. Opened in 2011, the hall exhibits almost 180 years of history of glass craftsmanship in an attempt to be, in addition to exhibition space, a center that disseminates the historical techniques of this art. Also a space that instructs those interested in maintaining the tradition and revitalizing a guild that placed Cartagena on the national and international map of these practices. They say that such was the importance of the Santa Lucia factory that, in 1862, Queen Isabel II went to visit her with her son, who was his successor as Alfonso XII.

it is advisable to contact the center to arrange any visit. It is an exhibition with more than 200 pieces, distributed in 15 showcases in which one can be lost among strokes, colors, shapes, compositions of pieces of a delicacy such that only looking at them suggests that they can crack at any time.

in the facilities we could cover expenses, although since 2015 the courses have also been reduced and without subsidy we can not," they say. A situation that has led the City Council to take action on the matter. In fact, the Municipal Services area announced last year that it had set to work so that the contract for the transfer of use of the building to those in charge of the museum also contemplated maintenance costs by the Consistory. A measure that, according to the center, has not yet started.

On the ground floor, also included in the visits, is the work area, where courses and exhibitions are held, showing, step by step, how these unique pieces are created. There, in addition to the ovens, there are all kinds of cutting and cutting tools so that visitors can discover the manufacturing process through which each object passes from the heating in the oven, to the blowing and coloring, the cooling, the cutting and carving.

Now, the hope of the managers is that the idea of Municipal Services go ahead, since, as they say, nothing has been done at the moment.

However, even though all the citizens who come to the visits leave the museum with a unique experience gained, the exhibition room does not go through its best moment. It is also a space to learn a centennial trade through its courses. The Integrated Management System (SIG) of Ecovidrio sees possible to reach a rate of glass recycling in Spain of, at least, 95 percent in 2030 and even reach one hundred percent recycling rate in 2050, according to the CEO of the entity, José Manuel Núñez -Lagos.

"The creation of Integrated Management Systems, based on Extended Producer Responsibility has been a success, but this should also be done in other fractions," he insists. Thus, he pointed out that one of the "keys to the success" of Ecovidrio is to carry out the direct management of the glass collection of 60 percent of the Spanish municipalities in which it takes into account "culture and customs" particularities. Therefore, Núñez-Lagos believes that it is not "necessary or convenient" to implement a deposit, return and return system (SDDR) for glass because the GIS has achieved high recycling rates and that "they grow year by year. year". In any case, he sees "very well" that any Administration or responsible "analyze carefully, rigorously and seriously" all the possibilities and measures for the proper management of waste. Precisely, this week the Government has shown in a parliamentary response its intention to study this possibility. The CEO of Ecovidrio has set an example to Madrid, where the entity has collaborated since March 2018 with the City Council to undertake a door-to-door initiative in the hotel trade. Through this project, in which the Consistory has informed 11,000 hotelkeepers of the municipal ordinances and has made a follow-up, while Ecovidrio has provided 2,000 special cubes to the innkeepers and has installed 500 new containers in 2018. "The result of the initiative has been a success, and now 95 percent of the hoteliers in Madrid have recycled glass," said Núñez Lagos, who is confident that the "maturity" of hoteliers will make the capital stop. to be "in the tail" of recycling and will grow this year by 11 percent.

block on which Torre Manacar sits, a task that took them two years.

Volume II — Number 118

The Manacar Tower has 32 levels and 12 underground floors supported by steel and concrete. When digging them, so much land was generated that Villanueva estimates that if the trucks that were used to remove it were aligned, the line would reach the center of Querétaro.

"Many neighbors were upset by the noise and dust, even though we covered the trucks and washed the tires, but now, having the tower next door will raise the value of their homes between 25% and 30%," he says. Arup designed a concrete core that rises along the structure, and connects the metal framework, allowing plants with 15 meter gaps. "We are in a more resistant area of the city, even so structural piles were made and all the excavation with concrete launched to withstand large earthquakes and category two hurricane winds," explains Villanueva. When in 2012, Pulso Inmobiliario decided to build a tower, it was clear that it must be an iconic work that would return a modernized version of the emblematic mixed-use complex that the architect Enrique Carral had created in the same area to the south of Mexico City. . With this idea in mind, the company went to the architect Teodoro González de León (1926-2016), the architect of reference buildings such as Reforma 222, Torre Arcos Bosques Corporativo (known as 'El Pantalón') or the remodeling of the National Auditorium. "We chose it because it was the best example of contemporary Mexican architecture and we wanted a building that would change the face of the south of the city," says Enrique Villanueva, Development Director at Pulso Inmobiliario. González de León designed a complex triangular figure that looks towards the roundabout of the axis that make up the avenues Insurgentes Sur and Rio Mixcoac and that, at the same time, seems to rest on its side or unfold in it, depending on

the angle in which it is seen. Its geometry dressed in glass plays with sunlight, conferring a white or gray color, as the day passes.

Villanueva details that the height -of 144 meters- was determined by the distance between the property and the other corner.

"We focus on niche markets, such as 2 mm hard glass applications. The production of the glass for the tubes in the necessary quality, the hardening and the perforation of the back panels are challenges that we have overcome. We offer 2mm hard glass and our goal is to meet the demands of module manufacturers that can be as small as half a cell, says Praadeep Kheruka, vice president of Borosil. The Indian firm faces the new trends towards which the sector is heading and for that it adopts new technologies and machinery that adapts to the needs demanded by the market. "We see great interest in glass-glass modules. At this time, orders are growing exponentially. The reason is the long lifespan of these modules. 60% of the defects in the modules are due to the poor quality of the plastic back panels. In addition, the joint between both sheets of glass is much better than between glass and plastic, which extends the useful life to up to 40 years. Modules with plastic back panels have a lifespan of only 25 years, "says Kheruka.
