We are already in the month of December. We are running out of year and it is a good time to take stock of our activities in 2017 that we will finish in a few days. With this are eleven newsletters that we have published in the year on a monthly basis except in the month of August, as usual in our publication. In relation to our visits to different glassmaking workshops in our country, we began the year with a visit to José Reina's workshop, in the Murcia neighborhood of Santiago El Mayor.

Robert Levin is an internationally known glass artist who lives and works near Burnsville in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Born and raised in Baltimore, MD, he received his BFA from Denison University and his MFA from Southern Illinois University. He was formerly the Resident Glass Artist at Penland School of Crafts, and has lectured, taught, and led workshops throughout the US, in Ireland, and in New Zealand.

For Jiyong Lee, being born and raised in South Korea and educated in the United States gives him two entirely different cultural perspectives. His “The Segmentation” series is inspired by his fascination for the science of cells, their division and growth. Using skills such as cutting, lamination, carving and surface refining, Lee has transformed glass into a simplified cubic art form. The “iglass 2017 International Contemporary Glass Exhibition,” a rare joint glass show, is underway at the Levant Art Gallery through the end of February. The exhibition features the glass works of 10 artists from the United States, South Korea, Denmark, Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic and Australia. On behalf of Spain, Javier Gómez, our Honorary President, participates.

Established in 2010, the first iglass exhibition was curated by Bert van Loo (1946-2016), a worldrenowned Dutch glass artist. This exhibition is both a tribute to Loo and a celebration of the vibrant glass art scene, with perspectives from varied geographies, generations and styles. The New Glass Movement.

The roots of the studio-glass movement were established as early as the 1870, when the French designer Emile Galle made a radical change in the prevailing attitude toward his medium by being the first modern glass artist to sign his individual creations, just as painters and sculptors did. Nevertheless, art glass-that is, one-of-a-kind workscontinued to be blown in factories, such as Orrefors in Sweden, Tiffany in the United States, and Lalique in France, that were better known for their production wares. It was not until the I960 that the contemporary studioglass movement was born, when a critical mass of artists were making glass independently of factories, on their own premises and with their own equipment. The intervening years had

brought isolated experimentation by a few daring individuals. The French painter Maurice Marinot started blowing glass in a factory setting in the early I910. In Cleveland in the 1950, Edris Eckhardt, a ceramist and self-taught glass sculptor, invented her own glass formulas, which she melted in a converted electric ceramic kiln. Apart from glass casting in Czechoslovakia, lampworking in Germany, and some pate de verre in France and Japan, there was little hot glasswork being done in artists' studios. In 1962, Harvey Littleton, a professor of ceramics at the University of Wisconsin, held a series of informal workshops on the grounds of the Toledo Museum of Art to explore the possibility of hot

glassworking in a studio setting. Dominick Labino, the director of research at the JohnsManville Fiber Glass Corporation and an acquaintance of Littleton's, attended the workshops, contributed his technical expertise, and went on to devise the first glass formula that would both melt at the low temperatures generated by small, portable furnaces and provide a consistency suitable for blowing. Littleton's and Labino's efforts unleashed a flurry of creativity not seen before in the field of glass. Today, glass has become an integral part of the international art world. Glass artists' ongoing explorations of new forms, new combinations of materials, and new ideas promise an exciting future.

Zoltan Bohus, a founding member of the Hungarian glass movement, died due to complications of cancer last week. Born in 1941, Bohus attended the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts where he studied ornamental painting. He would go on to become head of the glass-design department at this leading European art academy. Between 1993 and 2010 he was a professor at Moholy-Nagy University of Art, where he headed the glass program.
