WELCOME FROM THE MiFo BOARD OF DIRECTORS Dear Film Family, As MiFo celebrates its 18th year, I am reminded that tens of thousands of people have walked through our doors to watch movies that deal with the stories of our lives…AND THAT MATTERS! Seeing our lives in film, simply makes us and others more comfortable and understanding of what it means to be LGBT. For me personally, I cried when I saw my first real Gay film as it validated who I was and what I was feeling. Since then, I have seen hundreds of films where I laughed, cried, became angry or overjoyed. Some were better than others but the bottom line is this Festival shows so many varied stories of our lives and that is the essential part of our mission, to our community. Younger or older, we must work together to keep the festival as the centerpiece of the South Florida LGBT social scene for generations to enjoy. A SPECIAL Thanks to our incredible Sponsors, Producers Circle and Members that support us and our terrific Board Of Directors, WE cannot do this without you. I hope all of you will get involved…become a member or volunteer by either joining a committee or helping us during Festival. It is only by working together as a community that we can continue our quest of delivering World Class Festivals to South Florida. Remember we are two Festivals, Miami in April and Fort Lauderdale in October. Share our posts and emails and spread the word. I look forward to watching lots of movies with friends of old and to making many new friends, as this festival makes happen, so often. All the Best, Mark Gilbert MiFo LGBT Film Festivals Board Chair

WELCOME Dear Film Family, Welcome to the 18th Annual Miami Edition of the MiFo LGBT Film Festival. The mission of the festival is “to inspire, entertain, and educate the public, encourage a sense of community through international and culturally diverse film, video, and other media that offer historical and contemporary perspectives on the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender experience.” Last year we introduced UNITED WE FILM to further show our commitment to community. We cemented that commitment by uniting the Miami and Fort Lauderdale Festivals under one banner: MiFo, with the Miami edition now in April and the Fort Lauderdale edition in October. We come together every April in Miami to see our stories on the big screen, gather with old friends and meet new ones, and hopefully learn something new along the way. The films we show during the festival are meant to show the broad spectrum of our diverse LGBT community. There will be films you identify with; there will be films that challenge what you believe; there will be films that will provide a window into an experience you were not aware of; there will be films you love; and all these stories will show you how UNITED WE FILM. Over the next ten days of the festival enjoy all the stories we have to offer, create some of your own stories at our events, take the time to make new friends and share your experiences. We come to the movies to have a good time and talk about what we have seen. We come to the movies to share an experience. MiFo is an experience to be shared. I ask you to invite your friends and family to share this experience. On behalf of the staff and volunteers of the festival, welcome and enjoy. All The Best, Victor M. Gimenez Executive Director

After his psychotic ex disappears, Sidney, a bisexual dive bar drag queen, is forced to look after his 11-year-old son Georgie. Sidney is stuck in a glam rock-informed state of arrested development, still harboring aspirations of becoming a successful musician, a dream put on hold to ensure Georgie has what he needs, including the unconditional love of his father. Hunky Dory is a tale of unconventional fatherhood, the fear of mediocrity, and the pulsing reality of dreams deferred. It’s an oddball but legitimate take on the modern dysfunctional family.

MIAMI BEACH CINEMATHEQUE Morgana is a Mexican transgender opera singer with a relentless determination to fight against social stigma and family prejudice. Her dream is to have sex reassignment surgery. Her only chance to make it happen is to win a beauty pageant in Bangkok and use the cash award to pay for the surgery. The documentary embarks on Morgana’s odyssey as she follows her dream of self-asserting the identity she has been struggling all her life to construct. Funny, sensitive and moving, Made in Bangkok is a delight. Morgana is a great subject: charming, talented, charismatic, determined and vulnerable with a warmth that is contagious. Preceded By: Majesty Girls, Directed by Veronica Robinson and David Lizz, USA, 9 minutes. Filmmakers and Talent for Majesty Girls expected to be in attendance for a Q&A following the film.

Saturday @ 5:30 p.m. Directors: Brian O’Donnell and Sasha King Runtime: 88 minutes USA, 2015

REGAL CINEMAS Girl on Girl highlights the emotional consequences of feminine lesbian invisibility - the phenomena in which, due to their feminine or “passing” appearance, countless LGBTQ women are rendered invisible and assumed to be straight by the outside world and to each other. The film follows a group of women who challenge assumptions of what society imagines a lesbian to look like and offers fundamentally different narratives of how invisibility has impacted their lives. Each story intimately reveals that coming out on a daily basis is a repetitive act, not a one-time proclamation.

Filmmakers and Talent expected to be in attendance.

Among those sharing their unique stories are a trans Bar Mitzvah boy, a New York City cab driver, a young southern law student and a transgender man preparing for his wedding. When they both meet and start dating the same guy, they remain in denial about it until he picks only one of them forcing them to confront that they can no longer live the same life. MIAMI BEACH CINEMATHEQUE Twenty years after he helped put Jon Buice in a Texas prison, Ray Hill is fighting to free him. Filmed over the course of eight years, The Guy With The Knife traces the friendship between a prominent gay rights activist and a convicted ‘gay-bash’ murderer. Set against the backdrop of gay rights, victims’ rights, prisoners’ rights and the harsh Texas justice system, the film casts a fascinating spotlight on how the flaws of the system - and the court of public opinion - affect justice.

REGAL CINEMAS In mid-80s Cuba, anyone diagnosed with HIV/AIDS is sent to a military-run internment camp. Former boxing champion Horacio Romero is assigned to be a personal warden (companion) to troublemaker patient Daniel. Despite their initial distrust and ignorance, the two form a platonic bond that leads them to be better men. The Companion shows the stigma associated for those with HIV/AIDS in the early days of the epidemic both gay and straight. This eye-opening drama finds friendship and compassion during a little-known chapter in Cuban history.

They spend their time skateboarding with their friends in throbbing Mexico City where they sell their own blood and generate income by getting donors for the black market. But when an important transaction goes wrong, Miguel’s mother sends him out of the country. Away from Johnny, Miguel will find the path to his own destiny. While a chilling reality check, at its heart, the film is about friendship and love between young men, a sensual topic explored with tenderness and sincerity.

Anne is a headstrong, cool nerd. While covering a softball game for the high school yearbook, she becomes infatuated with the star of the team, the beautiful Sasha. The two girls charmingly hit it off and quickly become close. But when Anne excitedly shares her newfound attraction to Sasha with her best friend, Cliff, he reveals his feelings for Anne and lashes out at her in unanticipated ways. The First Girl I Loved is a delightful, authentic and humorous contemporary perspective on the first jitters of new romance and the age-old heartbreak of love.

Influences of Agatha Christie and Alfred Hitchcock are evident in this sexy gay twist on classic L.A. film noir. After confronting his hunky, unfaithful boyfriend (Gale Harold, Queer as Folk), beautiful Dusty blacks out, only to wake up to find his boyfriend murdered and he’s the prime suspect. Director Casper Andreas (Going Down In La La Land, The Big Gay Musical), screenwriter David Michael Barrett (Such Good People), and a gorgeous and talented cast create an over-the-top and very sexy murder mystery that is an entertaining guilty pleasure.

REGAL CINEMAS Danny Fields was a ‘faggot’ (his words) who dropped out of Harvard law school to move to New York, with all its cute longhaired boys. He hung out at Andy Warhol’s Factory, worked as a rock journalist and sparked the Beatles’ ‘bigger than Jesus’ controversy. He appointed himself The Doors’ press officer, and worked with the Stooges, Lou Reed and MC5, as well as giving boosts to Patti Smith. Presenting a subject who is unfailingly unpretentious, warm and witty, Danny Says is a love song to a great gay and punk cultural icon.

Though strangers at first, the two women slowly bond over their loss, sharing memories and stories of the man they both loved. Eventually they fall in love and Lucia finds herself at a crossroad. Brimming with passion, magical realism and an indie spirit, The Firefly is a wonderful cinematic experience,

REGAL CINEMAS Search Engines is a funny and sobering social satire about the essential relationship of the modern era: human beings and their phones. It’s Thanksgiving, and family and friends have gathered for the annual American celebration of togetherness and gratitude. When reception mysteriously goes dead throughout the house, each character must deal with his own crisis: marriages are tested, values questioned and everyone’s future is thrown into the balance. If the human experience is one of search - for meaning, purpose and love - this is a story of how technology is leading us further astray.

REGAL CINEMAS Viva stars Héctor Medina as Jesus, a young hairdresser working at a Havana nightclub that showcases drag performers, who dreams of being a performer himself. Encouraged by his mentor, Mama (Luis Alberto García), Jesus finally gets his chance to take the stage. But when his estranged father Angel (Jorge Perugorría) abruptly reenters his life, his world is quickly turned upside down. As father and son clash over their opposing expectations of each other, Viva becomes a love story as the men struggle to understand one another and reconcile as a family.

His routine is disturbed when he meets Crane, a wounded ex-con on the run from the law, who Wolf will nurse back to health. North Mountain is a love story wrapped inside an ambitious action/thriller. This film contains scenes of graphic violence.

Bullying, teen angst and the dangers of homophobia take a bloody, spectral shape in this cautionary tale of a society not allowing a girl to be who she wants to be. Alena is adapted from a best-selling graphic novel. This film contains scenes of graphic violence.

Fatima: Queen of the Night takes us from 1980s Cuba to the present day as she reflects on her entire life. The film is a heartfelt ode to being yourself , no matter who or what you are.

They soon leave and settle into a romantic night wandering Paris. However, something happens that forces both men to question their ideas about love, personal responsibility and desire. The two leads are excellent; their physical performances matched by the emotional intensity of their post-sexual journey. REGAL CINEMAS

James has served time for his involvement in the suspected drowning of a young boy in a river years earlier, although the body was never found. Ravaged with uncertainty, dealing with an estranged family and forced to face the dead boy’s mother, James sets out on a journey of self-discovery, shocking revelations and danger as questions surrounding the boy’s death brim to the surface . Old friendships and family ties are tested as James must find his path to the truth. Downriver is a dark, brooding, intense and powerful film.

Kim, Bella, and Momo are inseparable friends brutally persecuted in school. After another bad day, the girls get drunk and decide to taste the strange juice oozing from a mysterious flower in Momo’s greenhouse. Passing out immediately, the girls wake up some time later — as boys. Intrigued by the changes to their bodies and surging with a new self-confidence, the friends set out to discover what it’s like to live in a man’s world. But excitement turns to potential danger when one of them embraces her new identity and unexpected feelings suddenly emerge.

REGAL CINEMAS

REGAL CINEMAS The year was 1984. A handful of women innkeepers in Provincetown gathered together to figure out how they could entice summer guests back during the off season…and Women’s Week was born. The film takes viewers on a fascinating 30-year journey, through archival footage, interviews with celebrities and founders, and current events and performances, offering a historical—and hysterical—look at what a handful of innovative women can accomplish.

REGAL CINEMAS Sebastian’s comfortable Los Angeles existence is thrown out of orbit when news of his mother’s deteriorating health sends him flying back to his hometown in Peru. Once there, his previous life as a closeted son seamlessly starts again . When his handsome husband Josh shows up unannounced - to the shock and disdain of his mother and her community - Sebastian must confront two vastly different cultures, both of which have profoundly informed his identity. Sebastian is gracefully shot and directed by Carlos Ciurlizza in an impressive debut .

COLONY THEATRE

That giddy, all-consuming thrill of first love is conveyed with great empathy in Summertime. It is 1971, Delphine is bored at home on her parents’ farm in the French countryside. She flees to Paris and immediately falls for older Carole, a leader in the emerging women’s rights movement. When Delphine is obliged to return to the family farm, Carole follows her. Once there, they’ll have to cope with another reality. Summertime is a love story between two young women that is both unabashedly sexy and utterly realistic and compelling.

REGAL CINEMAS At a prestigious Catholic boys school in Melbourne in the seventies, Tim Conigrave and John Caleo fell madly in love. Their passionate, tempestuous, operatic romance lasted for sixteen years, facing disapproval, temptation, separation, and the looming shadow of the Grim Reaper. Their star-crossed relationship was immortalized in Timothy Conigrave’s memoir Holding the Man, and has been adapted for stage and screen. This is the beautiful and touching true story of how Romeo met Romeo and what happened ever after.

Fair Haven follows a young man, James, who returns to his family’s farm after a long stint in gay-tostraight conversion therapy. He comes home believing that he has been “cured” of his same-sex desire. However, once home he is torn between the expectations of his emotionally distant father and the memories of Charlie, a past relationship he has tried to bury. Fair Haven is filled with gorgeous landscapes and wonderful performances from Gregory Harrison, Tom Wopat and terrific young and rising stars Josh Green and Michael Grant. Shields’ powerful story explores what happens when a small town’s star quarterback is outed for being “hetero,” igniting a firestorm of intolerance, bullying, and prejudices in the community...yet is ultimately about our human right to love whomever we want.

Director, K. Rocco Shields and Talent expected to be in attendance for a Q&A after the film.

Upstairs Inferno tells the true story of the largest mass murder of gays in US history. On June 24, 1973, an arsonist deliberately set fire to the stairwell of the New Orleans gay bar the UpStairs Lounge, trapping patrons and killing 32 people.

A glitzy portrait of celebrated costume designer Orry-Kelly, who dressed generations of starlets, from Ingrid Bergman to Marilyn Monroe. He was a gay man in a world where “gay” didn’t exist. An exuberant, gossipy portrait of Hollywood fashions through the decades.
