GREETINGS Greetings sorors of the Mighty Midwest Region! I am excited to launch the first edition of the Midwest Missile for the 2014-2015 Sorority year. I aspire to bring information about our National, Regional and local programming initiatives, highlight the many wonderful activities and events being sponsored by our chapters, as well as keep you interested and enthused about being in the Mighty Midwest! I am going to challenge our chapters to work hard, uphold the ideals of the Sorority, and carry on the DELTA business to "Magnify the Mighty in the Midwest." I feel it is my duty and responsibility to strengthen this region and develop the talents of sorors from our great states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, West Virginia and Wisconsin. During the next two years our goals are to reclaim our sorors and bring them back to the sisterhood; to Mentor our collegiate members and assist with their growth and development as members but also as students; and lastly, to Maximize our communication by utilizing effective and efficient methods of outreach. We are off to a MIGHTY start! We have introduced the Midwest website (don't forget to visit the site regularly), started our monthly prayer calls and begun implementing our sorority programs and initiatives. As you read this issue, you will understand why there is so much "Strength in our Sisterhood" and why the Midwest is so MIGHTY!

REGIONAL NEWS Taking It to the Streets Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has once again answered the call. Under the leadership of National President Paulette C. Walker, and with the counsel of Florida-based Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Disaster Survivor Assistance Manager Cheryl Catchings, a member of the Sorority’s National Emergency Response Team (ERT), Delta is collaborating with FEMA to assist metro Detroit residents with property damage from the August floods. Efforts include educating residents, clarifying misconceptions and registering individuals in stormaffected communities for possible financial assistance.

Activities to date include a registration site at Detroit Receiving Hospital, a town hall meeting, and five community meetings. The Detroit Mayor’s office took note of the sorority’s efforts to inform citizens and invited Delta representatives to meet, later signing the City on as a partner in this effort. “We got involved after hearing that there were so many misconceptions about the process – especially about the need to appeal denials – so that metro Detroiters would have equal access to these available funds,” said Coleman.

Michigan State Coordinator Mardi L. Woods is leading a collaborative effort, along with the Michigan State ERT Coordinator Gayle Coleman, and the presidents and ERT coordinators of the Detroit, Inkster, Pontiac and Southfield Alumnae Chapters. Delta is the only volunteer organization involved in FEMA’s effort to spread correct information about the availability of assistance programs for metro Detroiters. FEMA has distributed $10 million to residents in Southeast Michigan, however many individuals in underserved communities are unaware of their eligibility for FEMA assistance and the application/appeal process. “This is a great example of local chapters mobilizing around national initiatives, such as the ERT and our partnership with FEMA, both forged by our national leadership,” said Woods. “We’re happy Soror Catchings was brought in by FEMA and that she was able to assist in mobilizing our Midwest Region, Michigan ERTs and chapter leadership to gear-up for this awareness effort.”

“We should be proud of the work that has been done in such a short amount of time by the sorors in the state of Michigan. This is a true testament to “The Strength of Sisterhood”. Let’s continue to work together whenever we can because there is so much strength in numbers,” said Takesha Stokes, Midwest Region ERT Coordinator. For those affected by the August storms, assistance may be available by contacting FEMA at 800-6213362, or online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov
