All Aboard The Information Highway

Depending on social media outlets for a fashion or beauty boost has almost become second nature in the current digital age. But just how much does our vision-driven culture influence our daily styling choices? By Carly Lewis

W

hether you’re desperately trying to tame a stubborn head of hair, struggling to find the perfect accessory or seeking the most flattering shade of lipstick, the chances are you’ve considered scouring the internet for a solution. Indeed, with Instagram and Youtube flooded with tutorials, reviews and photosets there is inspiration aplenty to meet your every style need.

It seems the beauty, fashion and hair industries have become overrun with online ‘gurus,’ all vying for our attention, eager to share their most helpful tips and tricks. We caught up with some of the blogosphere’s finest to get their take on the blogger boom that is currently dominating the web.

The Beauty Belle Amber McKinnon

Blog: Brown Beauty Bombshell brownbombshellbeauty.com.com instagram.com/brownbombshellbeauty

A

mber started blogging in 2008 after moving from the Big Apple back to her hometown of Kansas City. “I first got introduced to beauty blogs when I was living in New York, particularly blogs for people of colour as there weren’t that many then.” “When I finally moved back home I needed a creative outlet. I loved the idea of a blog where you could share ideas on your beauty philosophy along with advice and tips.” The product junkie, who lists ThisThatBeauty, Clumps of Mascara and Afrobella

among her favourite sites, believes that the blog community not only motivates our styling choices but also impacts the products we buy. “I think we have a really big influence on people’s purchasing choices, particularly because beauty is so accessible. You can easily run out and get a lipgloss or nail polish and because of that people are a lot more receptive to what we’re talking about.” She admits that this has much to do with with bloggers’ trialling products so that their readers don’t have to. “It’s helpful to hear someone say ‘I tried this face moisturiser for six weeks, this was what

I thought’ or ‘I’m trying on this shade of eyeshadow, let me show you what it looks like on brown skin.’ People can narrow down their choices before they even get to the store.” “It’s free and you don’t even have to sit on a computer anymore, you can just use your phone. If at any point you want to learn about a new product, a new technique, or see what someone is wearing you can log onto Twitter, go onto your Instagram, look on your blog feeder and you can get that content.”

The Style Seeker Taylor Freeman

Blog: The Skinny Fashionista theskinnyfashionista.blogspot.co.uk facebook.com/TheSkinnyFashionista

N

ineteen year-old apparel design student Taylor Freeman says she owes her outlandish ensemble choices to her spontaneous personality. “I can just randomly go in my closet and pick something out, I don’t really preplan outfits.” It was soon after she entered her teens that she started to develop her unique fashion sense, but after being ridiculed by her peers for her outfit selections, she turned to blogs for reassurance. “When I started getting into fashion blogging and seeing stuff on the internet I learned that it was fine to dress differently and that I didn’t have to be like everyone else.” “I started blogging about five years ago. Tumblr used to be the main platform for showing off outfits and I realised I could

take pictures, show other people and get their opinions.” Although Taylor sites inspiration as the main reason for bloggers gaining in popularity, she admits that personality has a big impact on whom readers and viewers choose to subscribe to or follow. “When I visit a blog, not only am I looking at what that person is wearing, I’m also trying to figure out the natural feel of who they are from their writing. It might sound weird but you can catch vibes off of people.” Could this be one of the reasons why people are so drawn to her own online space? “I get a lot of people that come on my blog and send me emails saying that they think I’m a cool person and that they’d love to meet me.”

The Naturalista Meechy Monroe

Blog: MeechyMonroe meechymonroe.com youtube.com/user/meechymonroe

C

hicago native, Meechy Monroe, owes much of her ever-growing following to her informative Youtube tutorials. The natural hair enthusiast utilises the video sharing platform because of how easily she can demonstrate different hair techniques to the masses. “A video is universal even if you don’t speak the same language. By looking at a video you can take my instruction without even hearing me.” When asked why she thinks bloggers have become so popular she replied: “It’s real life. This isn’t a model dressed up on TV with a script, this is a real person that’s in

their bathroom using these products.” “It’s a little bit more genuine and believable. That type of relatability is what’s helping bloggers become more popular and it’s helping companies sell more products.” She also gave her take on why we’re so obsessed with imagery. “Humans are visually stimulated. We’re not all born to be the most fashionable or to be the most talented with our hands, but now someone can tell you how easy something is or show you in a pictorial how you can achieve the same look. That’s what

has driven things like Instagram when it comes to hair styling.” It’s easy to see why ladies like these are making such a noticeable difference to the way we view current trends. With a neverending tally of styling options available at the touch of a button, and let’s not forget unlimited free access, we’ve been given a gateway into the creative minds of woman all around the world. So why not embrace it? You never know which unexplored corners of the web you could pull your inspiration from next.

W

earing all white and beautiful smile, Lisa Raye can always light up a room. This charismatic actress and model has touched the hearts of many with her down to earth personality, and her classy demeanor is one that we all adore. From the city of Chicago, IL, Lisa Raye followed in her mother’s footsteps and became not only a model, but also a talented actress. With popular roles on Players Club, TV Show’s All of US & Single Ladies, her own reality show “Lisa Raye: The Real McCoy”, and many more, she’s showed us that she can play any role. But there is more to this actress than meets the eye, Lisa Raye is also an entrepreneur and business woman. From launching a self-esteem driven teen pageant to creating her fashion lines Luxe and Romance as well as PZI-jeans for the curvy women, she can do it all. She has also broken into the hair and beauty business with her line of Lisa Raye Hair and Hair Products. We had the honor of getting to know Ms. Lisa Raye a little better, from her style to her entrepreneurship ties to the beauty industry, we can tell that this superstar will be shining for years to come.... Most of our readers know you from your successful acting career, how did your career get started? Everyone know that one. Let’s refresh everyone’s memory. The movie was in the 90’s with ice cube, Jamie fox, Bernie Mac… THE PLAYERS CLUB. What acting project has been your favorite, and what did you like about it? Everything I’ve done I love because I have learned from it. But it would have to be Civil Brand, a Lions Gate film, it was limited edition, a prison movie filmed in Nashville TN in an actual prison ....it was raw no make-up and no hair. It was emotional and deep. I filmed every day, so to get out of that emotional state I would go home and watch a comedy. Another one is All of Us. I was the new comer on the show (scene) and it allowed me to bring my comedic side out. It was my first big role on TV. When they brought the show back for the second season I was the only female to return back to the show. Will Smith and Debbie Allen were the directors Who or what has been your inspiration throughout your career? I have been my own inspiration throughout out my career...all you think is you want to be a star then you make it to Hollywood and you have self-proclaimed yourself… Then money, because we all need money. Success and then relationships… You look back and see where you started and see how much you have grown yourself including your associates. I respect all actors, in order to make it out here you have to pat yourself on the back. And most of all, inspiration comes from my fans “you have to feed your fans”. What do you love most about your career? *coughs* ME , my ego and my lifestyle. I’m a lights camera action kind of girl. Started off as a model, then I learned how to brand myself. I take all experiences and share them with people, all I have done, the good and the bad I have done. What made you decide to get into the hair industry and start your own hair extensions and hair product lines? 36 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - May 2014

We (black people) spend over $9 billion dollars over in hair and we own 1% of the market. So I wanted to make money and build a brand. You are controlling your brand. If you are a hair stylist, that is your brand. If you are a braider, that is your brand. When people come to you asking you for hair, they trust you because of your brand. I want to empower all of us Can you tell us more about the Weave Revitalizer System and how it can help keep your hair extensions looking their best? It was formulated to protect your investment in hair. Doesn’t have all the chemicals, and can be used on natural hair as well.

and the maturity I see in myself, “ I am a woman, hear me roar *meow* lol “. I also started to hydrate my body and started to exercise. Exercising should be your regiment. Your body is your temple when people see me, they say I have a glow about me (they see a light), it is my God around me and me taking care of her skin. I believe beauty is on the inside. “Shine from within” You have evolved into a powerful entrepreneur in many different arenas, what would you say is the most important thing to remember when starting a new business? Always have a business plan and dream it. Think about the pros and cons. I go through my phone book to see who can help me, who can help with investments (weather it’s investors or producers), and read information in books. I give myself a time limit, for example 3-4 months. I have to do a little something every day, whether it’s making a phone call, adding something to the list, or just dreaming it. I am determined to do something everyday.

Your website, LisaRayeHair.com, offers two great options for premium hair extensions. Can you tell our readers the difference between the Peruvian Platinum Hair and the Brazilian Luxe Hair? Peruvian is the bone straight or curly and the Brazilian is naturally wavy. I also have a 3rd hair option called organic Indian collected from the holy temples in India. All of the hair can be colored, and holds curls. What is your favorite hairstyle to wear? I use to love rocking the old school “Sharon Stone” ponytail look. But now I like to wear nice blow out type of styles… I usually add my clip ins, which are about 2 tracks, and she will either do 2 twist or 5 big twist, and pin it up, then take it down shake it out and have that natural hair wave pattern. I also have my hair stylist experiment making wigs with the Lisa Raye Hair... she’s a glamour girl. As a hard working business woman, I know it can be hard at times to keep up everything when you are on the go 24/7. What key beauty items can you not leave the house without? I never leave home without my hair. I never knows if I will be in the mood to have short or long. I also bring my Lisa Raye Flat Iron to get that curl pattern, and shampoo and conditioner. I also carry my bonnet so my hair is not on a pillow. I don’t use cloth scarfs because it eats out your edges. Other items include moisturizer for hair and skin. I never leave home without my lip gloss by Co Bigelow- its peppermint, and some shades, white jeans, and a tank top. I love to let my skin breathe, and I love my freckles, 37 www.MidwestBlackHair.com

B

lack Solutions, a hair and skin care company created by Robyn Reid, which creates high-performing products using new ingredients and innovative delivery systems not seen in the ethnic market, is the go to brand for barbers. With a goal of developing products that solve everyday personal care issues that ethnic people experience, there is no wonder they are sought after in the barber industry.

the market. The bigger ethnic brands do not do enough research and development to bring new and different products. Not much has changed in the ethnic hair and skin care market over the past 30 years. The barber market has even less innovation. My sister Danielle was a barber so I teaming up with her to start Black Solutions to make a difference.

Black Solutions started in 2011. Can you give us more insight on how Black Solutions is staying innovated in the hair and skin care market? Black Solutions uses new high performing ingredients that solve problems and delivery systems that are not seen in most ethnic products. Our motivation comes

If you aren’t familiar with this hair and skin care company, you’ll be running to their website after this article! Our readers would like to know a little background about yourself and Black Solutions hair and skin care products? My background comes from working in product development with a private label cosmetic manufacturing company for 10 years. Black Solutions was born out of frustration with the ethnic brands and not having any real innovative products on

from creating products that solve problems.

What makes Black Solutions products different from other Barber hair and skin care products on the market? Most brands fight ingrown hair using tea tree oil. The key ingredient in Skin Smooth to fight ingrown hair is not just tea tree oil. We use a keratin protein to dull the point of the hair so that when our hair grows and naturally curls, it does not have the power to penetrate into the skin to create the ingrown hair. Or the way Fade 2 Black color spray delivers an airbrush spray pattern vs. the other sprays on the market that spray out like a fire hose. We watched your product demo on your Black Solutions Spin Brush at the Bonner Brothers Hair Show in Atlanta, GA and we LOVE the new “One Brush”. Can you tell our readers about your new “One Brush”? The one brush is the greatest solution for natural hair to intensify the curl or to begin to dread the hair. This idea comes from James in Tennessee. I saw he had a great black solution he created so we teamed up

with One Brush to help bring it to market. We will be doing the same with Germaine Walker’s Celebrity Black. This will be available later this year.

I never get ingrown hairs. My most creative product is the liquid razor, and the best seller is Fade2Black. So all are my favorite for different reasons.

Does Black Solutions design hair care products for women? Black Solutions products can be used by women. A lot of women have short natural hairstyles and love liquid razor, skin smooth for ingrown hair and to be razor bump free, and fade 2 black and brown is used by women with weaves.

Where do you see your company Black Solutions in the future? Continuing to service the barber community as the go to brand for Professional Barbers and solving Black Solutions. We will work to set up Barber owners to create in-shop retail profit centers to help barbers make more money.

What are you most proud of with your product line? The love we get from the barber community. The barbers really show their appreciation for our products and can do such creative things with them. This is what makes me continue.

Where can our readers learn more about Black Solutions hair and skin care products and to purchase products? (ie website, social media, and etc). The products can be purchased on our website blacksolutions.com or you can come to one of our educational classes or tradeshows. We are in a new city every month throughout 2014. You can find the list of cities on our website. You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

What is your favorite Black Solutions product? My favorite product to use is Skin Smooth.

HEALTH

MWBH Weight Loss

?

WHY CAN’T I LOSE WEIGHT

H

ave you found yourself asking this question after several failed attempts at losing weight? Most likely, you already know that eating right and regular exercise goes hand in hand when it comes to losing weight, right? So why are you not doing it, and if you are doing it, why are you not losing weight? The first step is to identify the problem. Here is a list of possible reasons: You are not addressing the things that are causing stress in your life Oftentimes the stress in our lives stems from issues with money (debt), our relationships (with our higher power, our selves, and/or others), and our physical environment (home, work, neighborhood). Achieving and maintaining balance in these areas will free up energy which will allow you to go full force in pursuing your weight loss goal. You haven’t reached the point of being sick and tired of being sick and tired Oftentimes it’s when people reach this point, that lasting change occurs. You have not stuck to a plan long enough to see the results You must remember that you didn’t put the weight on over-night, so it is not going to come off over-night. Maybe you are setting unrealistic goals for yourself To say that you want to lose 30 pounds in 30 days is putting way too much pressure on yourself, and it’s not healthy. As you continue to set these unrealistic goals, and fail to meet them, you eventually become so discouraged that you just give up. You are exercising, and not watching what you eat, or you are watching what you eat, but not exercising A healthy diet and regular exercise are not only essential for weight loss, but also for your overall health. If you wish to see results, you must do both consistently. You started your weight loss journey, and then stopped, because you came to the conclusion that you just don’t have the time and/or money As women, we wear many hats: Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Employee, Student, etc. With each of these roles we have certain responsibilities, however, when we don’t tend to ourselves, these roles become overwhelming. Women must understand that when we take the time to nurture and invest in our MIND and our BODY, we are put into a position to better serve others. 62 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - May 2014

You feel that you have so much weight to lose, that just the thought of entering into a weight loss plan seems daunting That is understandable, and that is why continuous motivation and support is especially important for you. There is an underlying health condition that you are unaware of

Health conditions that can hinder weight loss are thyroid disorders, bipolar disorder, depression, Cushing’s syndrome, and polycystic ovary syndrome. If you are sure you are doing all that you can and the weight is still not coming off, you may want to see your physician. Jacquelyn Hollister, founder of Her Mind & Body and graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, is a certified health coach who specializes in weight loss. Jacquelyn helps women who desire to lose

weight to improve their eating habits, develop enthusiasm towards physical fitness, and employ simple techniques for reducing stress in their lives.
