Two great performance spaces... twice as many reasons to make it to the MEC in 2024 As we approach the one-year anniversary of the Beryl Jane Flett Studio (24 January), we’re excited to launch our new Act 1 2024 season guide across the two venues at the MEC. We hope you enjoy browsing the program which is designed to help you plan what you’d like to see through to July 2024.

During 2023 we streamlined our look with a cleaner, simpler brand that highlights the affectionate local nick-name for Manning Entertainment Centre... the MEC. While our branding is a little bit fresh and new, what won’t change is our commitment to quality service and great entertainment.

The Beryl Jane Flett Studio has already staged some amazing performances, and been used by various community groups. If you haven’t yet experienced this versatile new space, there are some exciting events to choose from in this program.

On that note, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my team at the MEC for their continued focus and dedication to providing a rich and varied performing arts culture that inspires our community.

At the MEC we are committed to ensuring everyone can enjoy our entertainment venues and thanks to an accessibility grant from Create NSW in 2022, we now have new automatic foyer doors, a footpath to increase ease of access from Centenarian Drive, and a wheelchair lift to the stage.

We invite you to make it to the MEC soon to enjoy and support the local, national and international performing arts industry. It’s yours to enjoy and it’s our pleasure to welcome you. Chris Tippett Theatre Manager

Tom Jones 60th Anniversary Concert Celebration Tom Jones is one of the world’s most revered vocalists to ever grace the stage, and is one of the few artists in history to have a hit record in every decade from the 1960s onwards. Highly acclaimed singer, actor and children’s author Shane Peters brings the vocal prowess and stage presence in the Tom Jones 60th Anniversary Concert. Shane spans Tom Jones’ 6-decade long career from his first ever hit “It’s Not Unusual” to the more recent “I’m Growing Old”. In his long, prolific career Tom Jones performed a varied range of musical styles from Rock, Pop, Soul, Blues, Country and

Gospel, and in the 21st century he dabbled in the more modern sounds of rock and sublime digital pop. Shane’s eerie vocal likeness to Tom Jones has to be experienced first-hand, and this performance focuses on the amazing catalogue of Tom Jones rather than the wigs and vegas-style costumes of other tributes in years past. There’s no need for bells and whistles when the vocals are this good! Join Shane Peters in this non-stop music event paying the ultimate tribute to the icon...the performer... the voice... Mr Tom Jones, the 60th anniversary concert.

Taree Arts Council presents Why Have They Turned Up? Three Short Plays The stalwart local theatre champions of Taree Arts Council present an intriguing new production, adding to the impressive list of acclaimed shows they’ve produced over several decades. Following on from the runaway success of The Revue in 2023, this trilogy of plays will showcase local talent in both the writing and acting departments, with two of the works being penned by a MidCoast wordsmith.

“Why Have They Turned Up?”: the question we sometimes ask ourselves when we open the front door to find unexpected (and not necessarily welcome) visitors, and that which our authors ask in each of their short plays. Agatha Christie adds a spot of mystery, and perhaps a dash of murder, to her take on the question, while the other two locally written plays offer more gentle rumination.

The Good Old Days of Rock ‘n Roll The pioneers of the Australian rock ’n roll era have joined together in concert for the first time in 60 years. In The Good Old Days of Rock ‘n Roll, you will re-live all the fabulous original hits from the hit makers themselves - Little Pattie, Digger Revell, Jade Hurley, Dinah Lee, and Lucky Starr. The Good Old Days of Rock ‘n Roll is an exciting and memory riddled show presented by Bob McKinnon. From television shows including Johnny O’Keefe’s Six O’Clock Rock and Brian Henderson’s Bandstand, so many talented performers and recording stars were born. This is not a tribute concert … this is the real deal.

This wonderful review of memories from those days is the “cream of the crop” who have survived over 70 years of continuous performing and who, between them, have recorded dozens of hits which they will perform as only each performer can, taking every member of the audience back in time to where it all started.

The Roy Orbison Story Experience the wonder of Roy Orbison in this brilliant theatrical portrayal of the man, his music, his voice, and his life. Find yourself believing you’re in his presence, transported back in time, reliving the emotion of each of his songs and the stories of his life. Mark Shelley is simply brilliant in his characterisation of Roy. He not only has the vocal range and tone to honour his songs, he also has the sensitivity and artistic ability to ‘be’ Roy. The ‘Big O’ stood head and shoulders above the rest, his vocals were peerless, his range extraordinary. His songs unique, impassioned and personal. Orbison, the man, was enigmatic, driven, shy, funny, quietly charismatic.

From his initial success in the 1960s to the resurgence of his career in the 80s, Roy Orbison’s voice remained remarkable, communicating an emotional intensity not experienced in popular music before or since. His songs conveyed vulnerability, love, loss and fun. His performance was unique, simple and powerful. Orbison’s life was littered with personal tragedy, and career highs and lows. His wonderful resurgence in popularity in the late 80s through his legendary ‘Black & White Night’ Concert, his solo album ‘Mystery Girl’, and the formation of the Supergroup ‘The Traveling Wilburys’ was a fitting final chapter for such a creative genius.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra performs Compassion Featuring Lior and Nigel Westlake What happens when a great soulful voice meets the power of an orchestra? Be swept away as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra presents the music of beloved Australian composer Nigel Westlake, including the award-winning song cycle Compassion featuring singer-songwriter Lior. Based on ancient texts, Compassion unites singer-songwriter Lior’s energising vocal range with acclaimed composer Nigel Westlake’s (Babe, Paper Planes, Miss Potter) orchestral writings. Moments of ethereal beauty and lyricism give way to harmonic innovations and dazzling percussion, as we’re swept up into that rare realm of artistry and collaboration that crosses cultural and emotional divides. Commissioned by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and winner of an ARIA Award

for Best Classical Album, Compassion is an ‘astonishing piece of Australian music’ (Russell Torrance, ABC Classic) and a luminous deepdive into the power of human compassion. Westlake’s Trumpet Concerto was written especially for the Orchestra’s Associate Principal Trumpet, Brent Grapes. This ‘exhilarating and exciting’ (Limelight) work gives every opportunity for soloist and orchestra to shine bright like the golden gleam of brass instruments.

Inspired by Jean Giono’s’ The Man Who Planted Trees’, The One Who Planted Trees is an inspirational story that proves just how much one person can do and will have you humming out of the theatre, pulling out the spade and watering plants into the ground. In the face of a global climate emergency, how can we find hope? What good can one person do? This is a fun joyous springboard for serious discussion about our world and the environment we all value.

“The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second-best time is today.” Chinese Proverb

“The One Who Planted Trees was one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen. It had such a kind and important message that brings awareness to the world about the current state of our forests and bush.” – Stage Whispers Perfect for ages 5+ but suitable for everyone!

Superstar The Carpenters Songbook Once upon a time there was a young girl who grew up in Wingham. She dreamt of a life onstage, filled with bright lights and song.

This very cool band seeks to transport their audience back to cherished memories created from the sixties onward.

Laura Davidson embarked on a journey to the big smoke of Melbourne the day after she finished at Wingham High school in December ’98. Here, she found her voice and her dreams took flight.

With open arms, we invite everyone to join us in reliving the joy of yesteryears, as the melodies of Carpenters music brings love and light to the MEC.

Twenty-five years and thousands of shows later, armed with her seventies-inspired show, Superstar Laura is returning to her roots; eager to share the magic of nostalgia with her beloved hometown and surrounds! Through the music of one of her all-time favourite bands, The Carpenters, Laura’s voice is a gentle reminder of simpler times.

Joining Laura is her stellar live band: • • • • • •
