Protocol

Display registration badges to gain access to conference meetings, events, vendors’ area, and as requested by the host committee.

Arrive on time for all sessions and be prepared to conduct Alpha Kappa Alpha business.

Be sisterly and do not hold seats. If a soror asks for a seat, offer it to her with a smile.

Sit in designated areas. If an area is reserved for delegates, diamond/pearl/golden sorors, special needs/disabled, very special guest, or emergency medical team, and you do not fit into those categories, please find a seat that suits your designation.

Turn off (or silence) all electronic devices during all sessions and not record or take photos during business meetings or rituals to include diamond/pearl/golden/silver induction ceremonies.

Adhere to appropriate conference attire recommendations for each scheduled event.

Always stand when the Regional Director, Supreme Basileus, Former Supreme Basilei, and dais guests enter a room.

Limit walking during programs/sessions, especially during meditations, introductions and when the Regional Director or Supreme Basileus are addressing the delegation.

Speak after being recognized by the presiding officer. Address the presiding officer as “Madam Regional Director”.

Give precedence to the Regional Director, Supreme Basileus, Former Supreme Basilei and Former Regional Directors if a line has formed to access an elevator, escalator or doorway.

Seek approval from a disabled soror, before offering assistance. Many sorors are independent and may not require assistance. For example, “May I help you?”

Please view conference registration information on the Mid-Atlantic Regional website midatlanticaka.org. Sorors must register for the 71st Mid-Atlantic Regional online. Registration is open to dues-paying members. Only financially active sorors may participate in Conference activities. Neither financial nor non-financial sorors may be guests of financial sorors at the conference. 1. Sorors are to register online for the Regional Conference via the Online Registration System. 2. Regular registration will open through February 4, 2024. The online registration fees are Graduate Sorors - $250 and Undergraduate Sorors - $125. 3. Late registration will open from February 5, 2024, through March 1, 2024, and must be purchased using a credit or debit card. The late registration fee is $50. 4. Sorors with a valid email address will receive a confirmation email. Please retain the email confirmation. 5. Only the chapter Basileus or Tamiouchos may submit group registration. GENERAL INFORMATION 1.

Participating team members must be active financial members of an undergraduate or graduate chapter of a fraternity or sorority within the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Undergraduate chapters will compete in the Step Show and graduate chapters will compete in the Stroll Off. Team members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® should also refer to the Step Show/Stroll Request Form located in the members only section of the Mid-Atlantic Region website. Teams will be informed with a follow-up email on instructions and directions for the show.

2. Step Show performances are limited to a maximum of ten (10) minutes. The participants in the Stroll Off will be limited to a maximum of three (3) minutes. Two (2) points for each additional minute over the time limit allotted will be deducted from the organization’s overall score. 3. Teams competing in the Step Show can have a minimum of two (2) performers and a maximum of ten (10) members performing. Teams competing in the Stroll Off can have a minimum of two (2) performers and a maximum of fifteen (15) members performing. Each team is allowed to have no more than two (2) persons designated to handle music and props for their show. These persons must be available as the group performs to set the stage and cue sound personnel. Music must be CLEAN (no profanity) and prepared by performance time. The following props are NOT permitted on stage or to be used at any point during the performance: •

bers of your organization that are not performing may not be backstage or on stage at any time during the show and must purchase a ticket for entry. 7.

In the event there are more teams registered for the Step Show or Stroll Off than time slots available, the event chairman and Alpha Kappa Alpha will determine show participants based on first come, first serve basis by organization. If your team is not selected, you will be notified and your entry fee will be refunded.

RULES AND REGULATIONS Performances 1.

The order of the performances will be based on the organization’s founding date. Each step team will have a maximum of ten (10) minutes to perform. Each stroll team will have a maximum of three (3) minutes to perform. The beginning of the show is deemed as the first movement, word, or song from the performing organization. The clock will start as soon as the first action is displayed.

2. Each performance must be in good taste and not degrade another person or organization. 3. Points will be deducted for performances that pass the allotted time limit. •

Two (2) points for each additional minute over the time limit allotted will be deducted from the organization’s overall score.

Use of foul language, music, or sexually explicit physical gestures (i.e., vulgarity) will result in point deductions and/or disqualification. •

Disqualifications: Inappropriate content (nudity, fighting, sexually offensive, etc.)

Deductions will only be made if a majority of the judges feels the organization has committed a violation.

Please keep in mind the audience that will be attending this performance will include individuals of various ages (children, VIPs, etc.). For this reason, groups are asked to refrain from profanity in the music selection and alluding to the use of alcohol and/or drugs.

4. The Mid-Atlantic Regional Director reserves the right to disqualify a team for any of the reasons above. Attire 1.

NO X-Rated attire or content is to be used.

2. NO attire that reveals any private parts of the body including “see through” material. Each team member shall be mindful of the requirement that they present themselves publicly in a way that represents the moral and ethical standards of their respective organizations. 3. Each member is expected to wear appropriate attire. 4. All clothing should be clean, properly fitting and in good repair and meets the following requirements: •

All undergarments (including briefs/boxers, thongs and sports bras) should be properly covered by outer clothing and should not be visible.

Transparent or sheer clothing, low cut tops and very short skirts, shorts or dresses are inappropriate.

Attire must not display obscene, profane, illegal, inappropriate or offensive images or words, including references to alcohol, tobacco drug usage or violence.

Music 1.

Sexually explicit music or physical gestures are grounds for IMMEDIATE disqualification. Any obscenity, nudity, violence, degrading of other organizations, explicit or lewd acts (e.g., humping the floor, eating pie,

etc.), EXCESSIVE gyrations, and use of vulgarity will result in point deductions OR team disqualification. 2. If a team member is found to be disruptive, disrespectful, or expressly unprofessional, the team will be disqualified. This includes any vulgar or disrespectful behavior on or off the stage directed to any participant, official or audience member. 3. All music must be submitted via email by Monday, April 8, 2024, at 2024marcstepshow@gmail.com. Please bring a copy of your music on a flash drive just in case there are any unforeseen circumstances. Day of Performance Check-in 1.

All participants are required to check in at the MARC office (Charlotte Convention Center) on Friday, April 12, 2024. A follow-up email will be sent with more details on the check-in process.

Prizes 1.

There are 2 performance categories: •

Undergraduates will perform in the Step Show category.

Graduate Chapters will perform in the Stroll of category.

2. Sororities will compete against each other. Fraternities will compete against each other. 3. Prizes will be awarded to the top performers in each category. 4. Prize money will be awarded to organizations in the Step Show category only. 5.

Judges will be representatives chosen from each of the National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations within the Charlotte area.
