GETTING STARTED Overview Rapid is a fully modular lighting control system which can be simply incorporated into a building design. The lighting control modules (LCMs) described in the this document are used as part of the Rapid system to switch lighting. They have individually addressable output relays for switching and in some cases can send dimming signals for dimmable luminaires. A separate relay can be used for emergency testing. The devices include interfaces for connection to external devices such as light switches, emergency test switches and time clocks, and other ports enable the LCM to be connected to the main Rapid bus and peripherals such as presence detectors and bus repeaters. Rapid is designed to drastically reduce installation time by connecting all products in the system using industry standard plug and socket connections. A unique manual infra-red programming facility enables the system to be configured prior to delivery, thus minimising the final commissioning process.

Mounting Rapid devices 1. Install devices in the position shown on the installation drawings where possible. 2. Always follow any device-specific installation requirements given in the Product Guides for each device. 3. Always ensure that installation complies with relevant Building Regulations and that device wiring meets the requirements of the latest IEE Wiring Regulations (BS7671). 4. Fix the box on a smooth, flat surface or using drop rod fixings. You can use optional track fixings. 5. Ensure that there is easy access to the wiring compartment and all connectors once the box is in place. Allow 170mm for total height of installed unit including connectors and cable. 6. Ensure that LCMs face downwards and are clear of obstructions so that they are accessible and visible.

7. Do not exceed the maximum length of cable of 200m on the DALI bus.

RECOMMENDED CABLE TYPES FOR NETWORKS Please note that these recommendations are for the Rapid lighting control system only. It is always the electrical installer's responsibility to ensure that the control system is installed in a safe manner using suitable equipment in line with the latest edition of the electrical regulations. These cable types have been tested and approved for use with Rapid systems. Should any other nonapproved cable type be used then CP Electronics will not accept responsibility for non-functioning systems. Ensure the cable chosen are appropriately rated for install to run with mains cables if they are be installed within the same compartments. Otherwise they may need to run within data voltage rated cables instead. Recommended cable options in order of preference.

SWITCH CONNECTIONS The length of cable between switches and LCMs should not be more than 40 metres. For plugged LCMs you can have combinations of up to 5 centre retractive or stayput action . DIN rail products can have up to 4 switches. Any switch input can activate any LCM output on any LCM within the system.

FLOOR NETWORK CONNECTIONS This section shows how to connect LCMs into a network. You also need to connect a 120 Ohm resistor at the furthest point of each floor network. (As well as an LCM, this point could be a scene selection switch or detector.) Note that this doesn't apply to DALI networks, which are designed to work without any termination. Avoid long stub cables connected in a T junction with the main run, as you cannot have more than 20 metres of unterminated cabling between devices. Floor networks are polarity sensitive so whatever core colours are used for bus A and bus B must be the same throughout the network installation . Note: The colours in these diagrams correspond to Cat5 B cable, but colours can differ depending on installation requirements and equipment.

DIMMING LUMINAIRE CONNECTIONS For hard-wired installations, wire the box using the terminals provided. Connect permanent Live, Earth and Neutral connections to the terminals in the wiring compartment. There is an extra set of terminals to loop through the wiring; these do not have to be used. For structured cabling installations, connect the structured cabling harness into the appropriate terminals on the LCM. These connections are suitable for devices such as: l l l

BEFORE COMMISSIONING Continuity test 1. Turn off the power to all the area controllers and LCMs. 2. Set the multimeter set to read Ohms. 3. Measure the resistance between each area controller's bus A and bus B connections for all connected networks. If you have continuity the reading should be 60 Ohms, plus or minus any resistance of the cable. The acceptable range is 48 to 72 Ohms - any other values and you must investigate the cabling before commissioning.

Polarity test 1. Turn on the power to all the area controllers. 2. Set the multimeter to read DC volts, 3. Put one probe onto the Ground (0 volt) terminal and the other on bus A terminal. Note the voltage. 4. Put one probe onto the Ground (0 volt) terminal and the other on bus B terminal. Note the voltage. The two voltage readings should be the same (approximately 2.5 volts). It is more important that the voltages are the same than this precise value. If one reading is 2.1 volts and the other is 3.0 volts, this shows an unbalanced voltage and there is probably a crossover between the bus A and bus B connections in at least one place on the network. An unbalanced voltage can also be an indication that the network has not been fitted with the requisite 120 ohm resistors.
To turn the lights on before commissioning To bring the lights on prior to commissioning, do one of the following: l
Power up the LCMs without the area controller connected. After about 15 minutes all channels will energise.
l
Press the
button on the area controller.
l
Press the
button on the area controller. This switches off the fittings on the floor.
ALL ON
l
Press the button to dim all dimmable fittings on the floor. This provides a visual indicator if there is a problem with a dimming connection or ballast, as the fitting will not dim.
