COMMUNITY SERVICE SONYA R. CHAMBERS Family Advocate Allegheny Intermediate Unit 3
As a resident of Duquesne, a community that saw its high school close in 2007, Sonya R. Chambers remains a staunch advocate for education in the community—to the point of following the progress of Duquesne students well beyond graduation, and seeing both her sons, Diallo and DiAngelo Mitchell, attend college. Chambers has worked for the Allegheny Intermediate Unit for 15 years and is also a three-term school board director who has reestablished the Duquesne City Schools’ PTA, which regularly holds essay contests and fundraisers to benefit district students and their families. In addition to organizing and facilitating community trainings for ACT Against Violence and Moms & Cops anti-violence programs, Chambers also serves as a family advocate for the district’s Head Start Program and has enrolled more than 150 preschoolers in early education programs over the past five years. She is a proud member of Payne AME Church., where she serves as a stewardess and president of the gospel chorus.
