MARIA LEWIS BETHEL
Disruptive Properties Coordinator City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety Maria Lewis Bethel is all about making Pittsburgh safe, not only for the community at large, but for her three children, ages 20, 17 and 14. And as the Disruptive Properties Coordinator in Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Safety, she can— and does. She is the creator of the Promised Beginnings Parent Workshop Initiative, which offers guidance and assistance to families aimed at preventing child abuse, violence and other crimes, and promoting early childhood education. She is also a facilitator for the Adults and Children Together Raising Safe Kids Program, a court appointed child advo-

cate for Allegheny County, and is beginning her sixth year as a Be Middle School Mentor. Prior to her eight years in the public safety department, Bethel worked in the City Planning Office for two years. She is currently a graduate student in the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs Masters Public Policy and Management Program, and holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration. Bethel said she lives by two things her grandmother told her: “Where there is a will, there is a way” and “things will change when you change.”
FINANCE TAMMY SPENCER BEY
V.P./Senior Consultant in the Finance Project Management Office PNC Financial Services Hard work and dedication are two traits Tammy Spencer Bey is not unfamiliar with, just four years after being recruited to PNC Financial Services as a business analyst, she was promoted to vice president and senior consultant in the Finance Project Management Office, the position she holds today. Prior to that, she had a successful career as a lead technical business analyst at Highmark. It was while at Highmark that Bey, a Bethel Park native and Bethel Park High School graduate, earned her associate’s degree. She later went on to further her education at Point Park University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in management and a Masters of Business Administration. Along with being dedicated to her career, Bey is passionate about living a healthy lifestyle and being active; it was no surprise that her passion would lead her to playing professional women’s football with the Pittsburgh Passion, a team who is a member of the Women’s Football Alliance. Now retired, Bey spent six years as a wide receiver and assisted the team in winning several division championships. Following her retirement, Bey immediately joined the Passion’s coaching staff and became an active part of their business team through the Passion for Life Foundation. The Foundation’s goal is to connect the team with nonprofit and community agencies throughout Allegheny County. Through these partnerships, the team continues to spread its mission of teaching life lessons through sports by coordinating current and past players to speak with youth from Allegheny County, and beyond, about staying healthy and living their dreams. Bey has a true passion for her community and making a difference, as well as giving back to others; she feels it is a calling from the Lord. It is that passion that allows her to enjoy mentoring young adults and being an active member of her church, Macedonia Church of Pittsburgh, located in the Hill District. Previously, Bey has served on the board of directors for FamilyLinks, Inc.; Macedonia FACE (Family and Community Enrichment Center); The City of Pittsburgh Youth Commission Council; and Highmark’s Wellness Committee for the African American Business Resource Group. She was also an active associate board member for the Sarah Heinz House. Bey is a devoted wife to Barata Bey, and mother to her three daughters, Ayanna, Hope and Taylor. Her favorite pastimes are staying healthy and fit, spending time with family, and playing softball.
