Bathing Suit Nightmares Exposed! By Kathy Friend

Every summer,

I remember my Aunt Dorothy telling me one day I would be okay with what I saw in the mirror. She explained that I would stop worrying about what everyone else thought and appreciate myself just as I am. Her words echo in my memory every summer as I try on last season’s bathing suits for the first time and head to the mall to seek out another ‘perfect’ bathing suit. Why is it when I (or we… tell me I’m not alone here) stand in front of a mirror with a bathing suit on, all insecurities seem to be right out there with a big neon flashing light and a siren to be sure everyone can clearly see the fluff and midsection situation that so I desperately try to hide? I have decided to employ my street-wear rules to bathing suits and see how it goes. There are very basic, simple rules to make sure what you wear looks great on you, right? So why not use these simple rules with seeking out the best bathing suit? 1. Make sure the color is good for your skin tone. 2. Be aware of details. 3. Fit is everything.

When it comes to bathing suits, here is how those simple rules are used:

Make sure the color is good for your skin tone. If you are someone who doesn’t get very tan in the sun (a very fair skin tone), 8 July 2013 | SASSY

beware of a bathing suit that is a dark color. The dark color will create a big contrast to your overall look, drawing a lot of attention to you or to places on your silhouette where you don’t want attention. This rule also applies to those who don’t have a big contrast in their natural coloring (blonde to medium brown hair, fair to medium skin tone, or hazel, brown or blue eyes). A trendy color bathing suit this season is copper. Give that a try!

Be aware of details. Take a step back and look at where there are details in your bathing suit. Details like contrast in color (stripes or colorful flowers) and embellishments (a little sparkle) draw attention. For example, if your bathing suit has a floral detail in the midsection, that is where onlookers eyes will go when they look at you. Be sure those details are placed where you want people to look! But some details aren’t all bad. Take rouching, for example! Slight gathers along the side of a swimsuit that create a subtle drape will not only be slimming, but also camouflages an ample (fluffy) midsection. V-neck styles are also a cut detail that is universally flattering. The v-neck will bring attention away from trouble areas, and bring all the focus to your neckline and face. One final word on details: keep balance in mind. For example, if you are smaller on top, bringing pattern and focus to the top will help to balance your figure. Fit is everything. This rule is especially true when it comes to your midsection. Anything that is a little too tight will create a roll, which is not only unattractive, but will also make you appear 5-10 pounds heavier. Likewise, if you are busty, be sure that bathing suit top fits! Not


only is a too-small top a bad look, you don’t want to spend the entire day at the beach fidgeting with your top to be sure you aren’t falling out of it. For ladies who are plus-sized, it may be hard to get a good fit. The best choice is something that is a ‘baby doll’ style 2-piece. A suit that doesn’t cut (top stops at) the hip, but rather is more like a short tunic is best, and – of course – rouching! Choose a solid over anything printed (remember the details rule), and keep the attention at your face. In other words, v-neck styles are your best bet.

‘Fluff’ Challenges - Camouflage Techniques Thick Middle – Look for styles that have a contrast in color or a belted waist. Smart color blocking with the attention toward the top (neckline) will distract from your midsection. Stay away from printed styles – try something in a solid. Details like side rouching also help to disguise a thick midsection. Belly – Many women want to disguise a little belly pouch. Wrap styles or anything with some shirring or rouching is a good choice. Gathers on the sides allow a nice drape in the tummy area. Also, a pero or wrap at your hip with some detail will distract from your midsection.

Top Heavy – Of course a maillot with an underwire is the optimal choice, but they are hard to find. Look for a 1-piece halter style; this is going to offer you the best support while offering enough cleavage to keep your look sassy.

Small Bustline

– Look for a top that has some padding. The best cut is a triangle top. Something that has some detail or embellishment like embroidery or ruffles will bring more balance to the top half of your body. A bikini in a bright print will offer the illusion of balance.

Bottom Heavy – Bring attention

to the top of your suit. This can be done with ruffles on top, or a pattern on the top and a plain bottom. This can also be done with a deep v-neck, and simple jewelry. A higher cut leg will elongate the line of your leg, making your hips appear thinner. Styles to steer clear of include boy shorts, no ruffles or embellishment on the bottom of your suit – this includes bikini styles that tie on the side.

Bicycle safeTy:

It's More than Just a Helmet By: Michael Yergler, M.D

The wind in your hair, the sun on your face, the pavement flying by … no, I’m not describing a ride in a convertible with the top down. These are many of the things you enjoy when taking a bike ride on a nice summer day. Cycling is a great, low-impact way to stay fit, as well as enjoy the great outdoors, but it isn’t without risk of pain and injury. Although accidents and crashes can be painful, the majority of cycling injuries are overuse injuries. These types of injuries often occur due to repetitive activity that fatigues your joints and surrounding soft tissues. Without adequate recovery, microtrauma to these tissues can occur resulting in consistent pain and chronic injury if left untreated. Cycling, by its very design, is repetitive. During one hour of cycling, a rider may average up to 5,000 pedal revolutions. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics estimates that more than 49 million Americans ride bicycles at least monthly, with over 5 million people riding at least 20 days per month. That means cyclists at every ability level are at risk for overuse injury. The majority of these types of injuries are related to improper bike fit or equipment, poor technique, inappropriate training patterns and individual anatomic factors. In this article, we will discuss some of the more common injuries associated with cycling, as well as prevention and treatment of those injuries.

ACHING KNEES

The knee is the most common site for overuse injuries in cycling, with an estimated 40-60% of riders experiencing knee pain. When evaluating knee pain, it is important to consider bike fit, seasonal variations, training distance and intensity and the rider’s anatomy. These factors can combine to create improper biomechanics while cycling and lead to overuse injury. Patelofemoral Pain Syndrome, often called ‘cyclist’s knee’, usually refers to pain under and around the knee cap. The stress placed on your knees while cycling, muscle imbalances between your hamstring and quadriceps muscles and misalignment of your kneecap might contribute to this condition. The pain, sometimes severe, often occurs after your ride rather than during. Besides pain, you may also experience swelling, grinding at the knee joint and muscle weakness. Another knee problem is called Chondromalacia, which refers to softening and deterioration of the underside of the kneecap. It is characterized by a dull pain around the knee and often described as a grating sensation and discomfort that worsens when climbing, squatting or during prolonged sitting. During cycling, the pain is precipitated by riding up hills or when you push higher gears with a slow pedal cadence. If you experience an ache or burning sensation at the side of your knee during cycling, you may be experiencing Iliotibial Band Syndrome. Your iliotibial band, or IT band, is the fibrous tissue on the outside of your leg that extends from your knee to your hip. The repetitive leg movements of cycling can lead to a tight IT band, causing it to rub on your knee and hip. Over time, this band can become inflamed, leading to pain, stiffness and snapping at your knee or hip.

Knee pain is usually associated with a seat position that is too high or low, or too far forward or back. Improper bike shoe or cleat position can also contribute to knee pain. When you have improper foot position on the pedal, this creates a misalignment in your leg rotation. You adjust your body, often unconsciously, to compensate which puts added pressure, friction and compression on your lower body.

TINGLING HANDS

After a ride, have you experienced numbness, tingling or pain in your hand or wrist? If the answer is ‘yes’, then you may be suffering from an overuse injury. And you are not alone: over one-third of all cyclists have overuse injuries involving the hand. Ulnar Neuropathy, known to cyclists as ‘handlebar palsy’, is caused by compression of the ulnar nerve at the hand and wrist. This nerve controls sensation in your ring and little finger, as well as most of the muscular function of your hand. The compression is usually the result of direct pressure on the ulnar nerve from the grip on the handlebars. Often, the nerve is stretched or hyperextended when a dropdown handlebar is held in the lower position. If you have this condition, you may feel numbness and tingling in the ring and little fingers. You may also have hand weakness and feel like you can’t grip the handlebars properly. Applying less pressure or weight to the handlebars and avoiding hyperextension can help prevent a reoccurrence. Most people associate Carpal Tunnel Syndrome with repetitive motion activities, but cycling can contribute to an existing condition when you hold the handlebar on top and apply pressure directly to your median nerve. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve through the carpal tunnel in the wrist area. When the nerve is constricted, nerve impulses cannot flow freely through the hands to the fingers, causing numbness and pain. With both these conditions, wearing padded gloves and adding padded handlebars to your bike can prevent your hands from further injury. The padding absorbs the shocks and jolts from the road, limiting the stress transmitted to your hands.

BURNING FEET

When you take long rides, do you have a burning pain in the ball of the foot, perhaps radiating toward the toes? You may have what cyclists call ‘hot foot’, or Metatarsalgia, which occurs most often on long rides. It may develop sooner or more intensely on hilly courses because climbs cause greater pedaling pressure. The pain results when nerves are squeezed between the heads of your foot’s five long metatarsal bones. These heads are in the wide part of the foot (the ‘ball’) just behind the toes. Hot foot is actually a misnomer. It’s not heat but rather pressure on nerves that causes the burning sensation. You’ll sometimes see riders squirting water on their feet in a vain attempt to put out the fire. Initially, the problem starts out as tingling, becomes uncomfortable and eventually results in pain and numbness. Wearing shoes or cleats that are too tight will aggravate this condition, as well as tight toe straps because they restrict circulation. Besides tight shoes, another risk factor is small pedals, especially if you have large feet. Small pedal surfaces concentrate pressure on the ball of the foot instead of spreading it the way a larger pedal will. If you wear cleats while riding, move them a few millimeters closer to the heel of the shoe to take pressure off your forefoot. Switching to a largerplatform pedal will more evenly distribute the pressure across your feet.

Also, wear cycling specific socks that wick away sweat from your feet. Achilles Tendonitis is a common injury that can occur in recreational cyclists. Overuse of the Achilles tendon can cause inflammation of the large tendon in the back of the ankle that can lead to pain and swelling. The main complaint is pain behind the heel. Cyclists with this condition usually experience the most significant pain after periods of inactivity, but you may also experience the pain during a ride. The most common causes of Achilles tendonitis are a lack of flexibility and overpronation, which is excessive rolling of your foot while pedaling. Most often, this condition is a result of shoe and pedal wear. It may be time to replace your biking shoes or pedals. Aggressive changes to your exercise training schedule can also be factor in this condition. Often, long distance riders will encounter symptoms after increasing their mileage or when starting hill training.

TREATMENT AND PREVENTION

Initial management for the conditions we have discussed today should follow the PRICEMM acronym. This stands for Protection, Rest, Ice Compression, Elevation, Modalities and Medications. You may need to stop cycling and exercise for a few days to allow your body to rest and the inflammation to decrease. When using ice on the injured body part, remember to use a cloth or towel between the ice and skin to avoid frostbite. Compression and elevation can help limit swelling, allowing extra fluid to drain away from the injury site. Modalities usually include mild range of motion exercises. These can include stretching and massaging exercises to improve flexibility. Finally, medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen will help with pain and inflammation. If you are unable to bear the pain or it doesn’t decrease after several days, it is time to see a physician. Proper bike fit is essential to reduce the incident of these injuries. Frame size, set height and position, handlebar height, saddle position and foot location are critical for a comfortable ride. For serious riders, visit a local bicycle shop and have your bike evaluated and adjusted to fit your body type. Hopefully I have provided you with some helpful tips on staying injury-free while enjoying a ride in the great outdoors. Remember to wear the right equipment, get your bike adjusted for fit, warm up and cool down with stretching exercises and look out for cars while riding down the street.

We all want to be the best version of ourselves.

We all struggle with shame, and it keeps us from being the best at our game. In both our personal and professional lives, the people we interact with on a day-to-day basis need the real ‘us’ to show up. My story is what I bring to the table. My story can be a gateway into someone else’s story, bringing empathy to someone else, causing that person to ‘up’ their game while I do the same. Brown says, “Empathy is the strongest weapon against shame.” When we share our stories, when we can sit with others and just listen with hearts of empathy, shame is dissipated and friendship can happen.

The need for self reflection and self evaluation is constant, necessary hard work if we want to be the best we can be at our game, whether at business or at home. I am constantly figuring out where I am, where I need to be, what’s getting me ‘stuck’ in place and keeping me from being the very best version of myself. Offering myself the best me is a gift to myself. Offering the very best me I spoke with Judge Scott Schofield, who has a unique perspective as he deals to others in my life is a gift to them. I am always learning. Judge Schofield says, “When we make a bad choice, we should be ashamed. Shame can be a motivator. Guilt can prod us to change. I try not to judge people, I try to judge their actions. I name their bad conduct; I try to call out their potential for good. I punish them appropriately for what they’ve done, but call out the best in them.” Schofield says, “Very often my unexpected empathetic response to drug offenders brings tears.” When I asked him how he could be empathetic with people who have obviously done such awful things, he responded, “I very rarely see an outright evil person. I see bad behavior, but I also see the good in everyone standing in front of me, and try to get them to see it, too.” Even with his empathetic response to criminal offenders, he says, “I am not lenient with them. Even when I send someone to prison for a long time, I tell them, ‘it’s important to use that time to improve your life. I want you to be all you were created to be’.” None of us wants to end up in front of a judge’s bench, but what if we could be judges to each other in the empathetic way Judge Schofield tries to be? What if, instead of being harshly critical and judgmental of one another, we tried to see the good in each other and call it out, focusing on the positive instead of the negative? All of us would live at a whole new level of freedom from shame if that could happen. No matter how far away we are from achieving our own personal ‘winning game’, we could all use a little assistance to get us there. Kathy Guy, Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Addictions Counselor, helps people achieve their winning game every day. I spoke with her about the topic of shame and its role in keeping people from offering the gift of their best selves. She says: Shame keeps people from their potential wholeness because it handicaps them. Shame limits freedom to be or to become who an individual wants to be. They believe they are bad or shameful. It gives a picture, an image, to the emotion – the faulty self-image of shame. Shame is trapping, limits freedom and makes us believe that choices don't exist. Shame often begins in a system of abuse. The abuse may begin in childhood or adulthood. When a person experiences abuse in childhood, they often feel shameful; it creates an identity, and they believe, "I'm bad, I'm not good enough, it's all my fault," and other thought distortions. These feelings of shame make them more susceptible to entering abusive relationships in adulthood. Although they had no choice in childhood, they have choices in adulthood, but they aren't able to recognize them. In this way, they feel trapped forever. It also makes them more susceptible to other bad choices in adulthood. "If I'm bad, there's no reason to be good." Shame becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy that leads people to do things that reinforce their shameful beliefs. Although the prison of shame is miserable, it's also provides comfort because it's familiar, and it's all they've ever known. It feels very scary, very dangerous, for people to step out of their shameful beliefs. Shame is about being hidden, kept in the dark, remaining unknown. Being known is scary because it means being seen, coming into the light.

Being revealed feels very dangerous for people. Although they feel bad about themselves, they are afraid that if they reveal themselves, it will be confirmed by others. Rejecting themselves, loathing themselves feels terrible, but the fear of having it validated from others, the pain of that rejection and loathing is feared as pain that they could not withstand.

Shame is about being hidden, kept in the dark, remaining unknown. Being known is scary because it means being seen, coming into the light. Being revealed feels very dangerous for people.” The liberation from shame comes when they discover, "I have revealed the worst things about myself to another person, and they have not shrunk back in horror." Liberation, freedom, comes when they reveal the worst things about themselves and discover that they are loved anyway, when they discover, "I'm okay." What if we did that for one another? Listened to the ‘worst of the worst’, looked at each other and said, “Hey, you’re okay,” or, even better, “Me, too!” Find a co-worker or a friend. Be honest. Take a risk and swap a story or two that you normally wouldn’t. Give an empathetic response to a story you normally would not, like Judge Schofield does with criminal offenders. Dare to go first and see what happens. What a difference this could make, both in our professional and personal lives! Your story is what makes you YOU. Your authentic self at the table is a game changer for you and everyone around you. You and your story are a gift to the rest of the world. Put shame in its place and live free. (And go get Brene Brown’s book! You’ll be glad you did.)

Summertime By Andrew Skipper

Ahhhh… sweet summertime, where the long days gently fade into warm nights. This is the season of lawn games such as croquet, bocce ball and badminton followed by a cocktail in the garden and dinner al fresco. Summer entertaining tends to be more casual, but it needn't feel any less special. Lifestyle Expert Andrew Skipper shares tips on effortless outdoor entertaining with style. When playing host to an outdoor gathering, you want to make it as easy on yourself as possible. No one wants to constantly be carrying things in and out of the house or running back and forth to the refrigerator. By stocking up on functional serving pieces and planning ahead, you can easily eliminate the stress of having people over and ease into the lazy days of summer. Offering a house cocktail keeps you from having to play bartender all evening. Here, I've set out a pitcher of grapefruit juice, a bottle of vodka and an ice bucket so guests can serve themselves. It's also nice to have bottled water on

hand. Whenever friends ask if they can bring anything to an outdoor soiree, I always say, "Ice, ice, ice!" You can never have enough ice on a hot day, and it's easy for people to pick up a bag or two on their way. I've taken the same ‘help yourself ’ approach when it comes to snacks. Keep it simple by putting out a few bowls of chips and Chex Mix to ward off hunger until dinner time. Don't be afraid to set up a drinks-and-food station away from the house. It encourages movement and forces guests to circulate and mingle the old-fashioned way.

Keep it Clean Sit a Spell

It's so important to have comfortable seating so guests can relax. Upright chairs with removable cushions are perfect for dining outdoors. I also like to have deeper chairs for lounging, perhaps in the garden or around an outdoor fireplace.

Use dish towels in place of cloth napkins for outdoor meals. I like them because they are larger than cloth napkins, which means cleaning up big messes (like barbecue sauce) is a lot easier. They are also heavier than paper napkins so they won't blow away with the slightest breeze. Just throw them in the wash after the party and don't worry about ironing them before the next one! Mix and match all sorts of fun patterns but keep the color palette consistent.


Dazzle Them

Instead of plastic cups, I like to use beautiful glassware outdoors. It may seem a bit over-the-top, but I think it adds glamour and a touch of surprise to see all that cut glass sparkling in the sunlight. I once attended a party at a home on the water, and the host served drinks in beautiful cut crystal glasses. As the sun set, all the rays of light bounced off the water and onto the crystal, causing them to send sparkles everywhere. It was one of those moments when time seemed to stop and everyone was mesmerized. I don't remember what food was served or what conversations I had that evening, but the atmosphere and that fleeting moment remains vivid in my mind.

Light the Way

Nothing is more magical than a summer party at twilight. Well, nothing except for a summer party at twilight with tons of candles scattered throughout the garden! To avoid a gust of wind killing the atmosphere, place pillar candles in glass cylinders to protect the flames from being extinguished. After sunset, clusters of candles are the perfect way to highlight a path or draw people to a seating area.

Stylish Serving

Sturdy trays are a must for outdoor entertaining. I recommend using trays with a lip to avoid spills and handles for easy carrying to and from the house. Fill them with anything from plates and silverware to snacks and linens. Here, I've used a beautiful black and white tray by Isaac Mizrahi to designate a drinks station. The bonus? At the end of the party, pile everything onto the tray and carry it inside to make clean-up easier!

Be Bold

I love to use statement fabrics such as this indoor/outdoor bold black and white stripe from IKEA. It is both classic and modern and comes in numerous colors. Use this on chair cushions, pillows and buy it by the yard to make tablecloths. For a tailored look, have custom tablecloths made or, for a less formal feel, drape yards of fabric over a surface like I did here.

A Recovering Pinterest Addict Speaks Out Warning: what you are about to read is a breath of fresh, crazy, hilarious air in the midst of our professional businesswomen's magazine. It is not for the faint of heart or for those with no sense of humor. If you're afraid of a massive attack of laughter, proceed with caution. ~The Sassy Magazine Administration

Hi. My name is Jane. I am an addict. *Hello, Jane* My addiction started about a year ago. At first it was fun. Recreational. Just an hour or so of ‘me time’, I said. But lately, it has spun out of control. Like ugly tentacles, it has slithered into every aspect of my life and destroyed my once-peaceful existence. My addiction's name is Pinterest.

It Started So Innocently…

With that first glance of fancy clothes, exotic places and DIY projects, Pinterest had me at ‘hello’. Yet, I felt a little guilty looking at this lady porn. That is, until I justified my viewing pleasure. I could handle it, I decided. I am a strong, selfactualized woman who clearly understands her strengths and weaknesses. To begin with, I'm aware that I'm not rich. I could never afford a castle with hidden passageways, yet Pinterest shows me dozens of them. I am also not Martha Stewart. There is not one ‘crafty’ bone in my body. However, on these pages, they all looked so simple and effortless. But I won't kid myself. The ladies who pin this stuff are magical unicorns and I am simply a human being. Or am I?

Delusion Set In

After a few months on the site, I had become so entirely delusional that I honestly believed I could pull off some of these fancy, creative make-overs, so I scoured yard sales for trash to turn into treasure. An old black and white TV would Poof! become a wondrous fish tank. Some guy’s disgusting Army boot – viola! a planter. Discarded building rubble? Abracadabra! A stone double helix archway with lawn furniture made out of wooden pallets. Yes, friends, these were dark days. And they were about to get worse. I had stumbled upon the food and drink section.

Due to these revelations, I came up with a new word for the vernacular:

Pinturbed [pin-turbd] adjective 1) to cause to be worried or upset over one’s inability to recreate the snazzy things seen on Pinterest : DISQUIET 2) to throw one's life into confusion because only the truly gifted can pull off the marvelous wonders seen on Pinterest : DISORDER Examples of PINTURBED 1) It pinturbed her that a home-schooling mother of four, who also has a full time job as a brain surgeon, could find the time and energy to build and install solar panels on her roof (made entirely out of toothpicks and aluminum foil).

Bat-Bleepin’-Crazy

Who knew you could carve a shark out of a watermelon or prepare an entire meal in a mason jar? I didn't. But I did now. From that point on, every evening I would present something new: fish tacos in a jar, tossed salad in a teapot, steak on a brick. Let's just say my husband wasn't entirely thrilled at my obscure foray into the culinary world. His protests started softly: "Honey. What's this? ... Oh. Interesting." Then he became more obstinate: "What's wrong with serving food on a plate? We have lots of plates." And, "Why can't we have a meal that hasn't been sculpted into a sea creature? Meatloaf should not look like a dolphin!" Then, "This not only looks like drift wood, it tastes like drift wood." So horrible had my addiction become that I blamed him for being unadventurous and rigid and even considered divorcing this marinehater. How dare he not drop to his knees and thank God for my gastronomic prowess?

2) The pins on Pinterest are so stunning that it sometimes pinturbs me to even look at them.

While I continue to be pinturbed over most everything I see on Pinterest, I do still enjoy the fantasy of it all. And, happily, I am proud to say I am now in recovery. Okay, ‘mostly’ recovered. Oh, all right, teetering on the brink. Geesh!

The Final Straw

I hit rock bottom last week. I was in a craft store browsing the shelves for something similar to the ‘Beachy Chic’ home accessories I had viewed the night before when I spotted a glue gun on sale. As we all know, glue guns are a gateway to the abyss. Once you own one, you will forevermore be that lady. I might as well just go out and adopt 35 cats and start wearing a floral muumuu. So I put the glue gun down and slowly backed away from it as the gravity of the situation became clear. As I pulled into my driveway, it was like my eyes had been opened for the first time. I finally saw what my husband saw: a rotting Army boot with a tulip growing out of it. A pile of debris cemented into an unstable arch that only a garden gnome could walk through. A pit of mud that was supposed to be a Zen reflection pond and a dozen dirty industrial pallets littering the yard. I had become a cautionary tale.

You might remember that Sassy Magazine has a fantastic section in every December issue called “Women to Watch”…and for good reason! These ladies are pretty incredible. This month, Tracy Vaughn, founder of Rockstar Kettlebell Gym (now Rockstar Gym) shares her story with us.

hen you have a passion for fitness, you can feel it in your blood. With 27 years of experience under her belt, Tracy Vaughn can tell you a million stories. From twelve years at Pinnacle Athletic Club where she was a Fitness Director, to helping to open ICE Athletic Center, it seems this Sassy Lady has seen it all. But nothing is more satisfying to her than the thrill of giving wings to her own business and watching it soar. “The biggest difference between working for someone and owning my own business is not having to ask permission or plead my case as to why I truly believe something would work or be worth the money,” Tracy says. “Anyone I have ever worked for will tell you I’m very passionate when I believe in something and I don’t back down. During the nineteen years prior to opening Rockstar Kettlebell Gym, my sole purpose was to ‘please’ and find a ‘solution’ for clients. I was always driven to make sure the

facility I worked at was the best with the programs offered… no matter how many hours I had to work, how many nights I lost sleep, keeping up on my education or spending my own money to prove something new would work! It is great to do what I believe in and not have to fight with owners who may not understand the fitness industry. However, owning my own business was also scary, knowing I didn’t have a lot of second chances to blow it! Anytime I was up late doing bookwork, it was hard not to also think of the equipment I needed to purchase or a decision to expand in order to make more clients happy at one given time. Before, I had always felt confident in my decisions, and that I could help the gym I was working for make money… and here I was questioning myself! I learned to continue to do what had worked for me before and trust my gut.” A hard lesson to learn, but one that was most definitely worth it.

Tracy shares some tips for fellow entrepreneurs:

1. One Thing at a Time!

One thing I learned to do that worked well for me was to start and finish one thing at a time. Anytime I wanted to start something new at Rockstar, I would get it off the ground and running before starting in on something else – one thing at a time versus trying to do too much at once. I wanted to focus on helping people accomplish their goals without wasting time, doing only the things I believed in and doing them well.

2. There is No Easy Road!

The biggest obstacle I have encountered in my line of business is that too many people give up too soon or take the easy road, so they think. You can’t please everyone. For me, it has never been about the money — my mission has always been to convince clients, friends, family, my kids, your kids to want the most out of life! A lot of people say, “You’re so lucky!” Luck? No. Hard work!

3. Do What Scares You!

I had to make a mark in life in something. When I was younger, I was very shy and I did things to help me not be so shy because I envied other people who were outgoing and wondered why I couldn’t be that way… why did it come so naturally to them? Then I started to put myself out there and I got better and better; now I can tell people anything. Hard work and honesty have certainly paid off for Tracy. Now, after her third expansion of the gym, a new opportunity showed its face, and she couldn’t be happier. “We are now 7200 square feet, a fully functional training health and fitness facility, after five years of business. During the decision to expand, I had the opportunity to sell Rockstar Kettlebell Gym – it is now ‘Rockstar Gym’. I knew I would be selling anywhere between the next one to five years; the opportunity just came along a little sooner than I thought it would. I would only sell to someone who would continue what Rockstar was already doing well at, and put the

hard work in to expand our services to give even more value to our clients. That is totally what has happened after selling to one of my trainers, Steve Stahl. I can’t say enough about the hard work this business grad has put in. He continues to grow the business and add even more professionalism to our facility. I’m so proud!”

Selling the gym was definitely not a step backward – it was a giant leap forward. “I continue to run some aspects of Rockstar, personal train and coach classes. I love it! I love getting back to being more hands-on with clients, love being a mentor to the trainers and being able to spend more time with my family. For the first time in my life, I feel I can slow down a little.”

And, at the end of the day, she’s not slowing down. “I’m sure that, soon, I will end up adding more to my plate and, before you know it, I’m in charge of something again! I have never just idled, so I’m not sure I can. I know one thing, though: you can always find me at the gym. I love to work out with our clients, complain about it being hard… and the trainers can count on me calling them something before the workout is done!” Tracy’s always on-the-go because, as the gym’s tagline says… "Why Be a Groupie When You Can Be a ROCKSTAR?"

The support of her family means the world to Tracy, as well, and fitness is a family affair. “I’m truly blessed and could have not done any of this without my husband, my two sons and my parents. My boys, 16 and 18, have been amazing, and carry on the health and fitness lifestyle that I have always done. The routine at our house is: school, practice, workout and homework. Working out has not only made them fit and better at their sport, it has taught them time management and that hard work pays off, and it keeps them out of trouble. They have been advocates of getting other kids to work out. It’s one of the best things I could have ever involved my kids in. I know it will always be a part of their life. In my line of

I am the President/CEO of a family business, the third generation leader. I’m the only sibling working in the business. I’ve read that many third generation-operated businesses decline, and I don’t want that to happen.I know I’m lucky to have inherited this business, but I feel so heavy with responsibility. I may appear to be competent, but inside I feel like a fraud. I know I need help and I’m not sure where to begin to ask for it. So, I’m starting with you. Help?

Charrise Says One of the most difficult things for top leaders to do is to admit vulnerability and ask for help. Ironically, it’s also one of the smartest decisions they ( YOU) may ever make. The Imposter Syndrome is common among people who have gotten top positions in their business and who are secretly afraid that they are unworthy or undeserving. The good news is that there is a lot of help available. Many family-owned business leaders create their own advisory boards, comprised of people with experience navigating the same challenges you are facing. Often, problems can be solved by hashing it out with a team of unbiased business leaders who’ve got nothing to gain or lose by telling you the truth. Also, it’s good to have someone on your team who supports you on a more consistent basis, like a business coach or mentor – one person that will help you develop your leadership ability and heal your worthiness issues. If you do those two things, I promise you will grow as a leader, and your decisions about the business will come from a healthier place. Finally, you likely bring far more to the table than you think you do. As a third generation leader, you’ve been immersed in the family business your entire life, having learned from both your grandparents and your parents. This may sound like a silly question, but here goes. I work with a group of women who are ‘fashionistas’. They wear clothes and accessories from the best brands and stores. I often feel ‘less than’ because I can’t afford to compete with them on that level. Their Coach bag costs them what is nearly a car payment for me, and I can’t justify that expense in my life right now. How can I fit in with these women and dress within my budget?

Charrise Says Why do you feel the need to compare? Are you looking for a way to belong? Are you worried about being judged, or are you judging yourself? Clothing and accessories provide us with a golden opportunity for self expression. I know a man who often said he wishes he were a woman – for no other reason than to have so many clothing choices. Celebrate your ability to choose! Your outward appearance can be a reflection of what’s going on inside of you. If you’re worried about not measuring up with your wardrobe, you may also be harboring concerns about not measuring up as a person as well. Explore that, and notice what the real fear is. Marketing and advertising trends change faster than Taylor Swift changes boyfriends. What worked last year – or even last month – may not be the best solution to getting your company, product or service recognized and used by potential customers. Getting the social media marketing mix right isn’t rocket science, despite what some of the experts claim. It does take time, patience and some research, especially if you’re marketing to multiple generations. One of the most important aspects of social media marketing is understanding your audience and using the tools that reach them most effectively. Which means a beauty salon whose customers are in their twenties will likely use social media tools much differently than a salon whose customers skew to their forties and fifties. The younger demographic customers in our area tend to use Twitter more than Facebook, and Facebook more than websites. For some businesses, particularly those who have visually appealing products or services, Instagram and Pinterest for this age group make sense as well. Chances are good – at least in this region – that tweeting discount offers to 32 July 2013 | SASSY

the older group won’t be successful. Focusing on gaining Facebook followers and offering them specials, discounts and Facebook-exclusive goodies is a much better bet. They are also likely to appreciate a well-designed website that anticipates the questions they have about your business, product or service and answers them succinctly. This demographic (who have been using the Internet since the days when web pages were filled multi-color, blinking type) wants websites that are easy to navigate and informative. Multiple social media studies show that Facebook use is growing among older adults. In fact, according to Online MBA, 46% of all Facebook users are 45 years and older. But don’t expect that to translate into ‘likes’ on your page. In a recent study done by Creating Results, LLC, a leader in marketing to baby boomers and seniors, “only 14% of consumers over 40 said ‘yes’, they would want to become a brand’s friend/follower/fan. The ‘no, thanks’ feeling is stronger the older the respondent.” So, Grandma may get information about your company or product from Facebook but she’s not likely to click on the ‘like’ box. The mix gets more complicated when there are multiple audiences of different ages. Think of a college or university – not only are they interested in marketing to prospective students, they also market to parents of prospective students and high school guidance counselors. The messages and the social media mix are likely very different. They may even market to adults returning to college. One Facebook post or paid ad won’t fit everyone.


The good news is that finding the right social media mix for your business is fairly simple and straightforward. Here are some pointers: • Ask your customers about their social media usage. After all, those are the people – and people like them – that you’re trying to reach. This can be something as informal as asking them a couple of questions while they’re paying for their purchases or an online survey. • Check out the competition, locally and around the country. No copycatting allowed, but see who has the most followers, likes, etc. Make notes on what types of posts, images and questions get the best responses, then come up with alternatives that work for you and your brand. • Join social media marketing online groups and forums. Many of these are available via LinkedIn; some are even specific to industries or product categories. Read through prior posts and then join the conversation. • Study up on best practices via online publications. Two excellent sources are Fast Company and Inc. Their content is updated throughout the day, and the stories are wellwritten and brief. • Test, test, test. Unless you’re purchasing Facebook or Google ads, there is no cost to you to post, pin or tweet away. Ask questions, post or tweet pictures, thank your customers. On Facebook, once you have 30 or more followers, you will be able to see which of your posts and photos receive the most response from your audience. • And, finally –Be authentic! Online, in print and in person! Your company and/or products are unique. Everyone, regardless of age, is drawn to brands that know what they have to offer and how their brand meets their customers’ needs.

was a blacksmith when he first immigrated to this country from a small German town near the Black Forest. Since he passed away before I was born, I never saw him engaged in his profession. But what little I know about blacksmithing tells me it was fraught with occupational hazards – from a recalcitrant horse to an errant spark. Forging a company or organizational brand is fraught with hazards as well. Executed properly, branding can pay remarkable dividends. But failing to do it right can cause some serious sparks to fly and bring the whole initiative down in flames.

Since branding is one of the least understood aspects of marketing, it may be useful to define what it really is AND what it is not. A brand is not a logo. It is not a color palette or visual identity. It is not a tagline. It isn’t a mascot. A brand may include these elements, but it is so much more. Marketing guru and author Seth Godin describes a brand as, “the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another.”

Effective branding involves knowing who you are and what you stand for. Once that historical base is understood and articulated, the brand can evolve but it must do so in realistic, achievable ways.

The other common pitfall of a branding program is the failure to educate and engage the entire organization. More and more executives are realizing that their employees are the ultimate ambassadors of the brand. These pitfalls notwithstanding, business leaders should never back away from branding out of fear. Branding is a powerful tool. Like any powerful tool, it should be used with proper knowledge and an appropriate measure of caution. The best brands are the ones forged through sound strategy, disciplined implementation and a healthy awareness of potential dangers. This approach will temper the strength of your brand and it should shine brightly for many years to come.

Mastering Money Management By Jennifer Warfel Juszkiewicz

“A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction,” said Virginia Woolf in A Room of One’s Own, a version of which she delivered to the women’s colleges of Cambridge University in 1928. To Woolf, her writing simply wasn’t possible if she didn’t have security.

Security means more than having a home and food: it can mean being able to take family vacations, to get a new car and to have a comfortable retirement. But such security takes planning, especially when our average retirement age is 62, but our average life expectancy is 81. That’s threequarters of a century to live, nearly twenty years of which we will be post-employment adults. Based on the recent financial crisis, our society may need a bit more training in money management. As a recent study by Allianz Life Insurance Company shows, that training becomes even more important for women, two-thirds of whom stated that they were “the primary breadwinner for their households.” While this doesn’t seem problematic – women have a history as the money managers for household expenses – the problem is one of confidence and knowledge: nearly half of the women Allianz polled said that they feared a financial crisis that would leave them destitute. Why are women so nervous about finance? We turned to two experts for insight: Susan Vance, JD, CPA, a retired professor of entrepreneurship and personal finance at Saint Mary’s College, and Scott Puckett, AAMS, of Edward Jones Investments in Elkhart.

What’s Holding Us Back?

For one thing, many women have concerns and fears associated with money, as reported in a 2010 Forbes article. This can be due to bad experiences or financial crises in their past, or it could simply be due to math anxiety. Vance has seen such concerns among the students in the personal finance course she initiated more than ten years ago. 36 July 2013 | SASSY

The incredibly popular elective course, which was recently featured in the Saint Mary’s Courier, teaches students from all majors how to be responsible money managers. Vance learned that many students have insecurities and misapprehensions, so she tries “to address those issues right off the bat. Personal finance isn’t rocket science. It can be taught. Regardless of your background, as smart, savvy women you can do it! And with the availability of online calculators, you don't have to be a math whiz either." But even if they face their fears, women often feel conflicted, says Vance. “Some see learning about finance as being greedy or overly materialistic, so I try to put that in context. Just because you’re trying to educate yourself about finance doesn’t mean you’ll become overly materialistic. Money is a tool – you can use it for good or bad – you can use it for whatever you think best (taking your family somewhere, charity, etc.), but the better manager of it you are, the more able you’ll be to better your own life and the lives of others.” To learn more about this, Vance particularly recommends Kate Levinson’s book “Emotional Currency: A Woman’s Guide to Building a Healthy Relationship with Money.” Once you’ve reached the stage of seeking knowledge, there are numerous resources to help you. We’ve listed a few of the ones recommended by our interviewees in the sidebar, but you can also attend seminars – Puckett just hosted some on budgeting and investing in June. Vance advocates learning along various avenues as well: “I’m a strong proponent that, if nothing else, it’s very important that women educate themselves about investing: read books, websites, etc."

Saving Today

To get a handle on how best to financially prepare for tomorrow while still enjoying today, take a look at your income and expenditures. People often tell Vance that they just don’t have any money to invest, so she advises they log their expenses for a couple of weeks “to get a sense of how much you are spending


on various things, and so you can better examine your discretionary spending, the spending that represents wants not needs (such as going out to eat).” One fun way to see the impact of your discretionary spending that Vance introduced to her students is David Bach's Latte Calculator, available on finishrich.com (also available as an app). You can input the amount you’re willing to save from your weekly or monthly discretionary spending, how long you’d invest it and at what rate, and the calculator will tell you how much you could have accumulated if you saved the money instead of buying that latte or new dress. Vance explains that the calculator provides some perspective about what even a small change in your lifestyle can do, even if you feel like you’re living paycheck to paycheck. Puckett encourages his clients not to be overwhelmed, to start with a simple plan and to remain faithful to it. Once you know how much you spend (perhaps by doing the log Vance advocates), Puckett says to “create a budget and include emergency spending and retirement as a part of that budget. Then, if you are a couple, agree together to live within that budget. Creating a budget is not hard, but saying ‘no’ to those things you really want, but are outside of your budget is difficult. Successful money management is really just as simple as that. Create a solid budget, and then decide to live within it. People who decide to do that are the ones that have the freedom to make some wonderful life choices down the road.” Saying ‘no’ doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice happiness. Many people are dissatisfied with the way they use money because they spend money on things that are not important to them. Rather, Vance asks, “What’s important to you? Spending time with your family? Then think about how you can you use your financial resources to do what you want, such as saving for a vacation. If I spend money in a way that supports my values, I will feel good about it.”

Investing for Tomorrow

While many women learn over time to be capable household budgeters, they may be flummoxed regarding long-term investing. Allianz found that only 12 percent of women are saving for retirement even though, as Forbes points out, many worry about being a burden later in life, particularly to their adult children. Many people assume their companies’ 401(k) plans will ensure a solid retirement, but this isn't always the case. "For one thing, many women don't even participate in their company retirement plan (assuming they even have one), often because they really don't know where to start,” says Vance. But even if you are contributing to a 401(k), things are still tricky. For example, how did you choose your funds from the list the company provided? Have you updated your choices? When Vance’s daughter, a teacher, asked her mom for some guidance, Vance looked through the 30 different funds offered and could only recommend five. She advocates checking the Morning Star rating for each fund. Morning Star uses a simple one- to five-star scale. That alone may dramatically improve your earnings over a lifetime, says Vance. But you can do even more by learning about asset allocation, vesting, Roth IRAs, how to use strategies to deal with the bad things that can happen in the market and how market psychology impacts your investing decisions.

Once educated, women do their homework. Puckett says his female clients often have good ‘big picture’ habits: they “tend to delve deeper into their investments’ background, competitive environment and other factors” than their male counterparts. Puckett reasons that this may be why “all-female investment clubs have been achieving greater returns than all-male clubs, according to a study by the National Association of Investors Corporation.” He also says that, since women tend to trade less often than men, they may incur fewer trading fees that can diminish returns and they can better take advantage of market rallies. Puckett explains, “During the 2008-2009 financial crisis, for example, men were more likely than women to sell shares of stock at market lows, which led to bigger losses among male traders – and fewer gains when some of the stock values began to rise again – according to a study by Vanguard, a mutual fund company.” However, Puckett says that women can occasionally be detrimentally pessimistic about markets. Forbes agrees, saying that one of the top concerns women have is ensuring they have a cash-based ‘rainy day fund’. While such concern seems reasonable, it can often lead women into leaving too many of their assets in low-interest accounts instead of growing their wealth. As you become more proactive regarding your financial future, remember not to let self-doubt stop you from learning more. Also, ensure that your management practices reflect your current values and safeguard your future security. As Woolf said in “The Voyage Out”: “The world is crammed with delightful things. I think young people make such a mistake about that – not letting themselves be happy. I sometimes think that happiness is the only thing that counts.”

In today’s digital, era your company’s website is often the first chance you have to make an initial impression on a customer. Research shows that you only have between three and five seconds to make a positive impression on a potential customer before they make a decision either A) to dig deeper to learn more about you or B) to leave. Is your website helping you to put your best foot forward? Does your website accurately and professionally convey what you are all about? Does your website tell your unique story? If the answer is ‘no’, then it’s time to think long and hard about your business goals and what role your website plays in achieving those goals. There are always things you can do to improve your website to help your business shine. For some businesses, this may mean a complete website overhaul and redesign. Website technology has rapidly changed in the last five years and will continue to do so. If your website was designed more than two years ago, or is based on archaic technology, it may be time to build a new website. When redesigning your company’s website consider a platform such as Wordpress that is constantly being updated and refined, and would also allow you to stay current with the latest technology trends and enhancements. CMS (Content Management System)-based websites like Wordpress also allow you to make updates on your own instead of always contacting a web designer to make changes. Whether you are on a path to design a new website or modify your existing site, here are some things to keep in mind:

Make Your Website Mobile-Friendly. 28 percent of Internet usage comes from mobile phones. This is a huge number and it is continuing to climb as more and more people get smartphones. Take out your mobile device and pull up your website. Is it easy to navigate? Can you see all of the content? Is your call to action visible? If not, you need to take action to make your site is mobile-friendly. You can work with a web designer to make sure your website is responsive on all platforms (Desktop, Mobile, Tablet) or you can create a separate mobile site.

Tell Your Story. Marketing genius Simon Sinek advises Fortune 500 brands on the principle that people don’t buy what you do (make, sell or provide) they are buying into WHY you do it. Your customers are curious about you. They want to know what makes you tick. They want to know why you are in the business you are in. They want the inside scoop. Your website content needs to speak to this. Your website needs to convey not only what you do, but what makes you unique. Consider adding a blog to your website to help tell your story (and to boost search engine visibility).

This is an everyday challenge and I am always trying to find the right balance. Quality versus quantity is very important to me, and I’ve had to spend more time planning and delegating to get this just right. Working from home a little more seemed like a good idea, but I found this difficult. Inevitably my 2-year-old would spill milk on the couch and the baby would have a meltdown right in the middle of an emergency work call. Or I would be responding to work-related emails while trying to play with the kids. All of this just left me feeling guilty on both fronts, as a mom and as a boss. I love my kids and my business, so when I’m giving less than full attention to either, the guilt pops up and I get stressed out. My advice is, while you are home with the kids, BE home. It’s okay to leave your phone off or in the other room for a while. Work issues can wait until the kids’ nap time. Spend the time and money to find great child care, so when you are at work you can really focus on your job. Full attention to your work when you’re at the office will make family-time better.

I am lucky to have my mother as my child care provider. I am confident that my daughter is being loved and cared for in my absence, which allows me to be focused at work. This next one has been most difficult for me. You cannot expect to be able to do everything. Sometimes you have to say ‘no’ to a request, leave the dishes for tomorrow or take a day off of work. This does not make you a bad employee, parent or spouse. It is impossible to be everything to everyone. Talk with other working parents. You are not the first person to face the dilemma of work/life balance. It is wonderful to have people to talk with and relate to. When I have been up most of the night because my daughter didn’t sleep much or I am stressed about when I will find time to get groceries, I find it helpful to talk with someone who understands. These are just a few things that have been helpful to me. It is important that you find what works for you so that you can enjoy being a working mother.

Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead By Sheryl Sandberg Reviewed by: Michael Zeiger, Reference, Music, and Children’s Librarian, Harris Branch of the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library No doubt, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s bestselling work Lean In has already generated a multitudinous response in both the realms of social and traditional media for its effort to redress and revitalize the women’s leadership movement. Regardless of whether or not you’ve followed the public and critical reception to the title thus far, know that Lean In quite literally embodies what it means to be sassy. Are you already leaning in for a closer look? Lean In’s main imperative is to provide a remarkably straightforward reminder to reach for one’s best possible self while aspiring to lead. To do this, Sandberg explains, one must remain highly engaged, be both resilient and outspoken and continually work to achieve a balance between the personal and professional aspects of life by knowing ones’ limitations and being unafraid to ask for assistance and understanding from loved ones. When these common sense ideas come into contact with the real life constraints of gender roles and social preconception, Sandberg’s work becomes most fascinating, offering a personalized, if not plainly biographical, approach to present her observations and the need for her arguments. While Lean In is a work gendered primarily in support of women’s success, Sandberg stresses early on that her aim is also to inspire her male readers to greater levels of equal professional consideration and cooperation, as well as spousal support, which she again encourages anecdotally. Sandberg’s approach is not uniformly lauded, however. You may already be aware of the book’s publication this past March, due in no small part to the arguments roiling around it. The gripes are numerous: how applicable can such success be to those who have yet to experience it or those who are not similarly empowered to achieve it? Is the amalgamated discussion of statistical trends in society alongside biographical anecdotes truly worthwhile if the book’s content falls somewhere into the doldrums between provoked widespread social change and meaningful self-help? Considered by some critics to be an indulgent, self-referential tactic, Sandberg’s personal writing about making her career of leadership at the U.S. Treasury, Google and Facebook rise to ever greater heights of success should not be a source of alienation to the reader. Instead, the argument can be made that Sandberg’s life is best taken as inspiration requiring some interpretation. What one takes away from her story ought to be a strategy (or even merely a restored goal) to reach for success that is tailored to one’s own situation and strengths. Regardless of the opinions Lean In produces, if you’re looking for the inspiration or perspective to reassert goals both professional and personal, Sandberg offers much to consider and more to discuss. Her book may not offer a guaranteed sweet path to success, but it’s a highly accessible place to start. So go ahead: Lean In.
