An annual favorite for the entire family! Join the Canton Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Gerhardt Zimmermann as they lead you on a journey of musical holiday favorites. The concert concludes with an audience sing-along.

Our series of four concerts takes place in the intimate setting of Cable Recital Hall.

Also this season we will bring you the Aultman PrimeTime/ Casual Series, beginning in January of 2012 and offering intimate, recital-style concerts. The About Showcase Series returns featuring our wonderful Canton Symphony Chorus.

And most importantly, we will perform numerous education concerts – from our SymphonyLand Series and Kinder Concerts to our Young People’s Concerts. These educational concerts are our most important endeavor. We are after all, building the future generation of audiences and supporters for orchestras and the arts.

Aultman PrimeTime Series

Once again, your Canton Symphony Orchestra brings you wonderful soloists and great repertoire, from the familiar faces of Nathan Olson, Menahem Pressler, Emily Cornelius and Daniel Boye, to the new faces of Martina Filjak, David Requiro and Peter Richard Conte. We have also invited back James Westwater and his stunning photochoreography for a visual and aural extravaganza observing the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. I am most excited about the debut of a local favorite for many in our area. The trumpets of the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps will join the CSO in a blockbuster program that will usher us into our 75th anniversary season of 2012-2013. Imagine 21 trumpets, bugles, and bass trumpets (not to mention a large organ) performing with 85 members of the Canton Symphony, all on stage at the same time. Now that’s what I call a “block party”.

The Canton Symphony MasterWorks season opens with the music of Franz Liszt, born 200 years ago in October 1811. Martina Filjak, celebrated winner of the 2009 Cleveland International Piano Competition, will perform Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Also on the program are Liszt’s Symphonic Poem No. 7 (“Festklänge”) and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. Opening the concert will be the moving tone poem Remembrances by American composer Margaret Brouwer.

To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, the orchestra welcomes Associate Conductor Matthew Brown to the podium for a collaboration with Westwater Arts amazing photochoreography. This innovative art form engages audiences with evocative multi-image photographic essays choreographed to classical music. The pieces by Copland, Glass and Pachelbel will be enhanced with stunning images projected over the stage with narration by Christopher Craft.

Last seen on the Canton stage in 2009, legendary pianist Menahem Pressler, founding pianist of the Beaux Arts Trio, will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. Rounding out the concert, Mozart’s Overture to Abduction from the Seraglio, Saint-Saëns’ intense Le Rouet d’Omphale (Omphale’s Spinning Wheel) and the lush La Mer by Debussy.

Orchestra member Emily Cornelius will dazzle in the concert opener - Winter from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Originally written as a film score, Lieutenant Kijé is a refreshingly satirical piece featuring baritone Daniel Boye. Closing the program will be Tchaikovsky’s earliest notable work - his Symphony No. 1 “Winter Dreams”.

Two phenomenal soloists - former Canton Symphony Concertmaster Nathan Olson and award-winning cellist David Requiro - join the orchestra for Brahms’ stunningly beautiful Concerto for Violin and Cello. The second half of the program will feature Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique - a revolutionary programmatic work inspired by Berlioz’ breakup with a famous Shakespearian actress.

A thrilling finale that is not to be missed: the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps will join forces with our own brass section to perform Janáček’s Sinfonietta featuring 25 brass players. Next, Jongen’s Symphonie Concertante showcasing Peter Richard Conte - the Grand Court Organist of the famous Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia. The program will finish with Khachaturian’s Symphony No. 3, his hymn to victory, with organ and brass together.

The glorious sounds of the Canton Symphony Chorus will join the orchestra for a Sunday matinee performance of Haydn’s inspiring Mass No. 12 (Theresienmesse).

Opening the concert will be Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C Major.
