BEAT REPORT CHECKLIST

Name:_________________________

Report:_________________________

Date:_________________ POINTS CHECK

Formatting: A two-deck headline, with each deck counting between 25 and 30 characters and spaces is submitted as part of the beat

/2.5

News Value/Angle: The focus of the beat is to preview upcoming events rather than covering old news. There is some sort of timely angle to the beat.

The beat leaves no unanswered reader questions and is long enough to provide details of the news; it is obvious the reporter has “thought like a reader,” anticipating questions the reader would have and having sources answer those questions.

/2.5 /5

/5 The story puts a “face” on the news and shows how it will impact students. Effectively answers the questions “How will this affect me?” and “Why is this important?”

Sources: The beat has attribution, with at least two sources credited and obvious to the reader (one of whom is an “expert” to lend credibility).

/5

All names and references to those names (title, spelling) are accurate.

Reporting:

WEB ONLY EVENTS – it makes them special  Live tweets: on the scene, up to the minute scores for games, and other competitions  Game Footage: it explains itself  Contests: run writing contests where the winner will have a story written about them online and their story featured.  Photo galleries: we always have extra photos that ook insanely cool, now we can use them  Online issue: I just use issuu. It lets us read through at an easy pace. I want to do this with that Journal I told Scout to write in Japan  Interactive graphs: when you hover over, they show stats and extra info.  Podcasts: Once a month, I will use both an advance student and a beginning for a “What’s new at Midland High” video, if not once a month, every marking period.  Tutorials: Different ways to do different things

Possible Advertisments? Still working with Emily on these, we are thinking to offer a free trial for the first marking period so not only will the sellers get used to them, but also so will we. We would offer different rates for a plain advertisement, pop-up*, video intro**, and a slideshow. *I hate pop-ups **same concept as the Youtube ads, except the people buying ads are responsible for creating the ads and sending the file to Emily
