A TOURIST OFF-SHORE DEVICE

CASE STUDY

Our thesi born from the interest about the complex phenomena of tourism and its intercation with the naturl and built landscape. After an excursus on its origyn and evolution , considering its social and spatial implications, we point out our consideration about some common aspect of hosting receptor and social-economical trends.

Oasi of Seas - Cruiser INNER FUNCITON

Normally a turistic locality has from the beginning some attraction features capable to attract the client, but to exploit this economic poential the soil consumption is needed. Every site to get a business need to be organized for the reception and the entertainment of tourists, so it’s not enough to built the hosting devices but also mobility infrastructures, facilities, and sometime even strong geo-morphological operations are used to improve the performance of the background. Tourism is considered from Jean Pierre Lozato Giotart, a geograph of tourism “the last mining industry, that even if produce a less intensive modification on the landscape, it’s more estensive and arrive to undermine also the untouched places so far from cities”.

Depending on the rising of wealthness and the improoving of transportation devices the number of consumes it’s drastically growth, the kind of offert are diverisificated and the acivable distace is increased. The image of landscape has a key role to sell the product, like the goods merchandising, the point is to fascinating the clients appeal to stimulate them to desire it.

After the competition launched from the billionaire Peter Theil for the design of Technotopia (september 2011), and his hudge financing to the Seasteading Institute, to develope a platforms duthy free community out the U.S. territorial waters, we change our mind leaving, the idea of a temporary receptor for a megastructure. We decided to reconsider the mechanism of tourism development from an unfavorable location and improove it by an intensive tourism program and exlclusive image brand.

The modern tourist receptors have a spatial configuration tending to function in autonomy, a feature developed by the marketing strategy of the “all included journey “. The result is the agglomeration of the needed functions inside or really close to the resort, which is changed from the 80ies model of american hotels, including regional features, often stereotypical, in order to summarize in a safety and comfortable place the outer cultural identity. As much the site is organized to receive the users, as less the landscape is scouted, and get just the backdrop of a backdrop scene.

Tanks to the firm Morris Architects, that won in 2008 the first prize “Radical Innovation in Hospitaty “, we discover that the issue of oil rig dismission, in fact thereare 4000 platforms in Gulf of Mexico manyof those are already out of service, abandoned or blown up at the expense of marine life, because the disassembly operations are very expensive. The option of recovering these facilities can be allocated to civil use, in this case, tourist, is always less utopian operation, but rather interesting from the point of view of consumption of the soil.

The workshop focusing on Real Estate urban developement activities, sometime large speculative intervention that totally change that part of a city. To understand how works these macro-process and the roles of the actors, like municipalithy, owners, users and associations, each team had take in exam one company to analize it, from structure to marketing strategies and intervention. Once found an interesting project the team should manage it in order to promote social policies, improve the life quality and where necessary reduce the impact on the neighbourhood. This landmark had a complicate history, since the realization, to the cost of maintenance, and it neither met expectations. In 1999 intervented English Parnership, a statal authority, that decided to valorize the intervention, to develope enterely the Greenwhich Penunsula. In 2004 it’s approved the developement plan made and managed from Quintain RE, in authority. The masterplan count a mixed use with residences, it’s the lack of continuity with the surrounding, despite it is well connected; moreover the nearness of an old industrial area, and of an highway, bring to the area noises and pollutions. industrial archaeological park (like was made in the Ruhr neighbourhood, to give a new experience of the riverfront. After the economic crisi we decided to add to the program of the park a function that gives job opportuinies, and at the same time could be an example of a sustainable developement. So we designED a synegyc park, able to combine the practices of recycling, involving professionals and jobless into the process of collection and transformation of litter; to them it’s also given a social utility and a kind of social redemption. All the process it’s organized into the park, connoted like a museum of recycle that aim to attract visitor and to spread awareness.

MOTOR DE MUSICA

In the past the cinema had contributed the notoriety of this street, focal point of moovie magazine, but now the presence of musicians and the different kind of audiences of musical performaces are the resources that should be activated to rekindle the cultural life of the street. The program of this building want to attract different kinds of users, and mix cultural function with commercial and accomodation facilities. .The entrance is unusual, a sheltered and sloped space that invite users to come up or down. The anterior part of the building, that comprend the hostel, it is crossed by light chimney that can activate natural ventilation in the summer, by pressure difference. The back is organized around a central void space that link all the function and allow the diffusion of natural light, while in the smaller places it’s provided by deflector, that change sensibly the light quality of the enviroment.

This year is the centenary of the beginning of construction of Gran Via, the main street of Madrid. The road, 1360 m long shaped like a composite axis, was a pumping arteria for the economy, culture and nightlife of the city, hosting a lot of theaters, cinemas, hotels and offices. Now-a-day, thanks to its location, it still remain an active road into the city able to attract those tourists looking for shopping, but it’s passing through a period of stagnation, seeable on the ruined facades of some disused buildings. This workshop want us to think to renewals interventions that give a architectural contribution to Gran Via using any available spaces. With this process we should submit questions about the facades schemes and the tipologicalfunctional systems, if keep or not the classical solutions.

EDGE & CONNECTION DIFFERENT LEVELS OF INTERACTIOS

This competition aim to revitalize some urban parcel inside city of Milano, our site is an urban void of Giambellino neighbourhood. The area is placed between tha main road and the railway Milano-Mortara, built parallel to the Naviglio. Competition ask the ralization of an open area, visible and accessible, that can host new residences and services, whom should serve also the quarter on the other side of Naviglio, linked by a pedestrian cycle path that go across the railway. It’s requested to build a landmark because of the presence of high rise buildings near the path of the railway. The area must be protected by the noisy presence of the railway and of ATM parking, thus it’s suggest to make an earthwork onSout and East side.

The plot it’s mark out by 10 m stripes, parallels to the main road, which are wrinkled like under a tectonic compression, achieving the shape of waves, shaking the surface of the park and lifting the crossing path to the heigth of 3m, from which start the footbridge. Also the roofs of the lower buildings is wave shaped and the earth stripes are cristallized into the two square, a lifted platform and a inner court, from which rise the towers that marks the crossing path. The treatement of the boundaries had bring us to think to them level of definition, starting from the two extremes: ON-OFF, the first rapresented from an uncrossable wall and the second from a line painted on the ground.

footbridge acces

At South-East, like suggested from the competition we made a earthwork, on which we plant a green filter to hide the ATM parking, while on the South side we place a buffer made by dividing walls that decrease the noise but allow a longitudinal view of the infrastructure; these could be used like supports for open air exhibitions or for writers competitions, in a way to have a visual continuous changing of this edge. With the backyard of the church, on which already exist a soccer field, thinking about a relation of benefic sharing, we settled a “filter playground connection”. The RFI’s football field, on the West side, is separated by a light fence made by wood boards, easy to remove in case future connections; the effect is that from far doesn’t stop the view, but getting closer the optical cone is decreased.

VOLCANO HAZARD TOWARDS A RESILIENT COMMUNITY

The ainms of the workshop is the intervention on problematic areas. Different sites placed in the wordl are connected from the immaginary path of a Zeppelin, all those have in common any avversity that mantai a condition of suspension. The projec has not the ambition to solve the matter, but to challenge these situation whit a limited buget of 38 sqm. On august 2006 in Ecuador, not far from the capital, Volcan Tungurahua has ejected an ammount of ashes that had cloud over the sky for months, cloged the comunication and threaten people’s and animals’s life. Ecuadorian governament had forced inhabitant to evacuation, to be hosted from other villages. The difficulties of situation denyed the acdisplaced person to come back and care their homes and go ahead; because of this in the long period is rised conflicts between hosts and hoster populatin, or tha abbandon of the native village.

Site Complexity

To live close a volcano course it’s risky. The villages built upon the fertil slopes and the steep paths that link the villages are the signs of the human domestication of a wild landscape. Once in a century the nature wake up to mind tha human who is the strogest, and its scream shake the ground and obsure the sky. The ejection of lava flow was’t strong but the ashes lifted had covered the lanscape like a soporific fogg. The inhabitants didn’t want to leave their home and activities, so the army had to force tham to evacuate. Cause of this moreover the several phisical deseas due to the ashes, a lot of them had suffer about psychological trauma. Through the project the evacuation is organized step bt step in direction to the cities, in relation to the level of risk. Two lighthouses in strategic locations will hel the orientation, while differen light signals will get faster and safe the evacuation. The most important spots are the bridges, signaled by a red light, that allow to cross the river and escape the lava flow. At the same the lightsigns will help the inhabitants to come back to rid the villages from the ash, to save the crop and the grass for the farming.
