Spadesbourne Brook

Initially, it had been proposed to create a rock-ramp against a weir just upstream of the footbridge linking Shenstone Close and Blackmore Lane to School Drive. However, after seeking advice from fisheries specialists at the Environment Agency, North Worcestershire Water Management (NWWM) opted to remove the weir completely and in doing so have improved the passage of fish and other aquatic species along the Spadesbourne Brook.

The NWWM team will be monitoring how this weir removal has affected the bed levels and localised habitat potential of the brook over the next few months. This work follows the recent creation of a small pool and series of wetland scrapes which was funded through Worcestershire County Council and Worcestershire Wildlife Trust’s Natural Networks programme in partnership with Bromsgrove District Council, Bromsgrove District Housing Trust and the West Mercia Police & Crime Commissioner.

Keep an eye on North Worcestershire Water Management’s Facebook page (@NorthWorcsFlooding) for details of how to join the NWWM team for a morning of spreading wildflower seeds, litter picking and removing the invasive Himalayan Balsam plant in the spring. Good news for the fish! T he second and final phase of the Spadesbourne Brook biodiversity enhancement and flood alleviation work in Bromsgrove is now complete.
