434 ISLAMIC BRONZE CALLIGRAPHIC SILVER-INLAID EWER Seljuk Empire, 11th-14th century AD A bell-shaped ewer with flared base, curled handle and facetted spout; to the base, a band of running dogs; to the sides of the body, two silver-inlaid bands of calligraphic text framing a central frieze of arabesque scrolls with horsemen, musicians and scale-operators; to the shoulder a frieze of horsemen with bow, sword, lance, sword-andshield with palmette motifs between; to the upper face of the shoulder a band of calligraphic text; the spout tubular with recumbent felines to the sides and another above the spout; the handle flat-section with inlaid vinescroll motifs, collared lug to the top. 3.2 kg, 48 cm (18ž").
