Keep Away From Children: Background and Reflections

Michal Nachmany is a New York based self-taught artist who grew up in Jerusalem but with roots in Poland. Her father Shamai (named after his grandfather) was born in Międzyrzec Podlaski (Mezrich) in the Lublin region of Eastern Poland in 1924. When Shamai was ten, he traveled with his parents by train and boat, and settled in Jerusalem, where Nachmany's stories began.

For many years, Nachmany worked as a Hebrew teacher, educator, and mentor in New York helping adults, including Rabbis and Cantors, through Hebrew with ‘a touch of Israeli culture,’ engage more deeply in their personal journey.

Whenever her father came to visit New York or when she saw him in Jerusalem, they would visit markets and local artisans, hear their stories, and build their collections of yesterday’s beautiful everyday items: Shabbat’s candlesticks, tapestries, ethnic jewelry, or ancient ceramics. After her father died in 2015, Nachmany started creating art as a bridge from her past to her present life.

Nachmany’s personal reinvention began when she was gifted a collection by a friend, his mother’s collection; like Nachmany's father, the friend’s mother had collected the people she met, places she visited, and objects from these journeys, preserving a memory – through an object - whenever possible.

This friend’s mother's prized collections included a glass jar full of matchbooks she kept from every place her family visited in the 1950s and 1960s. With the small square images of each place on the front of the matchbook, this collection resembled an Instagram account of the past. As Nachmany started to learn about history captured on matchbooks, visiting such collections as varied as the Matchbook Museum of Shanghai to the stands at her local flea market, she learned how matchbooks were historically a link where objects and memories of mundane life are strung together: both in the images on the matchbooks as well as the scenes the flame created by the matches illuminated.

One of the most poignant phrases on each matchbook was the common refrain: "Keep Away From Children".

Coming from the recent loss of her father, Nachmany was struck by a parallel between this phrase and how her father's generation ‘kept away’ from their children, completely, the suffering and hardships of their lives: relative perished in the Holocaust, impoverished life of new immigrants, and the struggle to build and protect the new State of Israel. Nachmany’s parents, and their entire post-war generation, surrounded their children with all the love they could gift, yet always held back, keeping away the most painful parts of their early lives. Only once their parents aged or passed away, the children of this generation finally had an opening to learn about their parents’ lives from this empty, negative space of the stories never told, always ‘kept away’.

Nachmany's first solo art show in September 2015, Journeys and Longings, was focused around matches and matchbooks, and the emerging modern land of Milk and Honey. Since then, she has put on exhibits focused on themes varying from the journeys of orphans to Israel in the 1940s, to Theodor Herzl’s vision, to the similarities between the cultures and histories of Israel and Taiwan (exhibited in Taipei), to the diverse immigrant communities of New York's Lower East Side. In each of her shows, she brings stories and journeys of objects to life, opening a window for the community to share their own stories with one another.

This show represents Nachmany's first exhibit in Poland, and also the first time she has visited the country where her father was born and where most of his family perished. Her father kept away the stories of the suffering of his childhood from her. Now, finally, after his death, she is free to strike the match to illuminate these stories, and to create an artistic connection between the journeys of her life in Jerusalem and Israel, with her father’s early life.

For Nachmany, ‘Every Object and Every Person Has a Journey.’ Through the layering of images of daily life, using mixed media, printmaking, and collage, she explores themes of personal and cultural narrative, nostalgia, and repetition. Her work juxtaposes Jewish, Israeli, and American memorabilia including original letters and postcards, legal contracts, financial certificates, banknotes, postal stamps, photos, and other found objects, along with items from everyday life in Israel, New York, and elsewhere today.

From her father and his generation, Nachmany learned the art of personal reinvention culminating with the modern State of Israel becoming a reality in 1948. That year, the vision of a new state for the Jews, triggered by the challenge set in 1897 by Theodor Herzl: "if you will it, it is not a dream," became a reality. Nachmany’s inspirational art is often a collage of the stories told before Israel’s statehood, and retold afterwards.

In her Krakow show, Keep Away From Children, Michal Nachmany hopes that each visitor reflects on their personal stories and journeys, and on their parents’ stories shared or ‘kept away,’ and then imagine how to recreate, repaint their own collage of life, finally willing their parents dreams into a safer reality, no longer ‘kept away.”

Michal Nachmany to mieszkająca w Nowym Jorku artystka, która dorastała w Jerozolimie, ale posiadająca polskie korzenie. Jej ojciec Shamai (nazwany tak za dziadkiem) Tzveigreikh urodził się w Międzyrzecu we wschodniej Polsce w roku 1924. Kiedy Shamai miał dziewięć lat wybrał się z rodzicami statkiem do Hajfy, gdzie dotarł 20 kwietnia 1932 roku. Rodzina osiedliła się w Jerozolimie, gdzie rozpoczyna się historia Nachmany.

Przez wiele lat Nachmany pracowała jako nauczyciel języka hebrajskiego, edukator i mentor w Nowym Jorku, pomagając dorosłym, w tym rabinom i kantorom, poprzez hebrajski z “odrobiną izraelskiej kultury” angażować się głębiej w ich osobistą podróż.

Zawsze gdy ojciec odwiedzał ją w Nowym Jorku lub gdy ona spotykała się z nim w Jerozolimie wizytowali targi i lokalnych artystów, słuchali ich opowieści i budowali kolekcje pięknych przedmiotów codziennego użytku z przeszłości: świeczników szabatowych, tkanin, biżuterii ludowej czy antycznej ceramiki. Gdy jej ojciec zmarł w 2015 roku Nachmany zaczęła tworzyć sztukę w roli mostu między jej przeszłością i teraźniejszym życiem.

Nachmany zaczęła odkrywać siebie, gdy jej przyjaciel podarował jej kolekcję swojej matki; tak samo jak ojciec Nachmany, matka przyjaciela gromadziła ludzi, których spotykała, miejsca, które odwiedzała, obiekty z tych podróży, zachowując pamięć - poprzez przedmiot - kiedy tylko było to możliwe.

Cenna kolekcja tej matki składała się ze szklanego słoika wypełnionego pudełkami z zapałkami zbieranymi w każdym miejscu, które jej rodzina odwiedzała w latach 50tych i 60tych. Poprzez małe kwadratowe obrazy każdego miejsca na przodzie pudełka, kolekcja przypominała Instagramowe konto przeszłości. Gdy Nachmany zaczęła poznawać historie uchwycone poprzez pudełka, odwiedzając miejsca tak zróżnicowane jak Muzeum Pudełek z Zapałkami w Szanghaju aż po stragany na jej lokalnym pchlim targu, dowiedziała się jak te pudełka były historycznie połączeniem poprzez które obiekty i wspomnienia życia doczesnego są powiązane: zarówno poprzez obrazy na pudełkach jak i przez sceny utworzone przez płomienie, gdy zapałki są podpalane. Jedno z najostrzejszych zdań pojawiających się na pudełkach było powtarzającym się: “Trzymać z dala od dzieci”.

Radząc sobie z niedawną utratą ojca, Nachmany była dotknięta paralelą między tym zdaniem i tym jak pokolenie jej ojca “trzymało z dala” od ich dzieci, cierpienia i trudności ich życia: krewnych straconych w Holokauście, biedę życia nowych imigrantów i walki o budowę nowego Państwa Izrael. Rodzice Nachmany i ich powojenne pokolenie otaczało ich dzieci całą miłością, jaką mogli dać, lecz zawsze zachowywali dystans, ukrywając najbardziej bolesne części ich młodego życia. Dopiero gdy rodzice się starzeli lub odchodzili, dzieci tego pokolenia mogły poznać życia rodziców z pustego, negatywnego miejsca historii nigdy nie opowiedzianych, zawsze “trzymanych z dala”.

Pierwszy samodzielny występ Nachmany we wrześniu 2015 roku, Podróże i Tęsknoty, skupiał się na zapałkach i pudełkach i powstającym współczesnym kraju Mleka i Miodu. Od tego czasu organizowała wystawy skupiające się na różnej tematyce, od podróży sierot do Izraela w latach czterdziestych, przez wizję Teodora Herzla, po podobieństwa pomiędzy kulturą i historią Izraela i Tajwanu, aż po zróżnicowane społeczeństwa imigrantów nowojorskiego Lower East Side. W każdym występie przywraca ona do życia historie i podróże obiektów, otwierając okno dla społeczności do dzielenia się własnymi opowieściami.

Ten występ to pierwsza wystawa Nachmany w Polsce i jest to pierwszy raz, kiedy odwiedza ona kraj, w którym urodził się jej ojciec i większość rodziny zginęła. Jej ojciec trzymał z dala od niej opowieści o cierpieniach jego dzieciństwa. Teraz, po jego śmierci, może ona zapalić zapałkę, by oświetlić te opowieści i by stworzyć artystyczne połączenie między podróżami jej życia w Jerozolimie i Izraelu z wczesnym życiem jej ojca.

Dla Nachmany każdy przedmiot i każdy człowiek podróżuje. Od jej ojca i jego pokolenia Nachmany nauczyła się sztuki odkrywania siebie kulminującej się w zrealizowaniu się współczesnego Państwa Izrael w 1948. Tego roku wizja nowego państwa dla Żydów uruchomiła wyznanie ustanowione w 1897 przez Teodora Herzla: “jeśli tego pragniesz, to nie jest marzenie” i sprawiła, że stało się to rzeczywistością. Inspirująca sztuka Nachmany to często kolaż opowieści przekazywanych przed powstaniem Izraela i opowiedzianych ponownie później.

Poprzez jej krakowski występ, Trzymać z dala od dzieci, Michal Nachmany ma nadzieję, by każdy uczestnik zastanowił się nad ich osobistymi historiami i podróżami i nad opowieściami rodziców, któymi się podzielili, lub które ukryli i by wyobrazili sobie jak odtworzyć, odmalować ich własny kolaż życia, by ostatecznie wpuścić sny rodziców w bezpieczniejszą rzeczywistość, w której nie będą więcej “trzymane z dala”.

Michal Nachmany is a self-taught artist and educator based in New York City. She was born in Jerusalem, Israel, in 1958, and moved to New York in the 1980s. She has a B.A. and M.A. from Hebrew University.

One of the central themes of Nachmany’s work is that ‘every person and every object has a journey.’ Her work focuses on the ways personal and cultural journeys are captured in memories and objects, with work that reimagines and repurposes found objects of daily life. As an immigrant from Israel to New York, she explores the journeys of people and their keepsakes from a personal perspective.

Nachmany’s technique combines mixed media, including collage, printmaking, and sculptural installation, to sew together swatches of life through images, colors, and words. She uses collage as a medium to create new stories about the memories and histories evoked by the objects she uses in her work. In this way she juxtaposes themes of personal and cultural narrative, nostalgia, and repetition using memorabilia, legal contracts, letters, photo albums, matchbooks, postcards, and other found objects from daily life. By bringing together these different elements in new ways, she seeks to open up dialogues between the objects, as well as between the people who attend her shows. These artistic dialogues create a space for communities to come together to connect over works of art, and to share memories and observations.

As Nachmany has exhibited her work across different communities, she has observed that collecting objects and preserving memories from the past occurs in varied forms across many different cultures and communities. The act of collecting represents a universal desire to preserve fragments of the past through its physical manifestations, while continuing to move forward in a rapidly changing world with new stories and new keepsakes. The techniques of mixed-media and collage allow memories to be recreated and repurposed within a community, a family, or on an individual level. In her art, Nachmany explores this dichotomy by relating these objects through new forms that give these images and stories additional layers, recreated meanings, and new beginnings.

Nachmany's work has been exhibited in solo shows in NYC, including at the UJA Federation of New York headquarter, the 14 Street Y, and the Manny Cantor Center in the Lower East Side. Her first international solo exhibit was held in Taipei, Taiwan in late 2016. This catalogue captures her current show on display in the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Krakow, Poland.
