former bio-chemical engineer will soon be creating an art masterpiece on the side of the Italian Independent Social Club on West Crawford Avenue in Connellsville. Glassport native Jeremy Raymer went to school for bio mechanical and then electrical engineering, and while he took a few studio art classes, including just one painting class, he never had any formal art training. As a self-taught muralist, Raymer has been creating murals for about six years, although he has been painting on a smaller scale consistently since 2005. It was a trip to Florida to visit his sister that inspired him to try the large-scale murals. “My sister lives in the West Palm Beach area, and I was visiting her in August of 2013,” Raymer said. “We went to an art crawl that was centered around a congregation of murals and street art, and when I saw it all, I was just inspired.” A large percentage of the murals were done with spray paint, so when Raymer got home he bought his first can of paint in the hue of Montana Gold. He started off working on a 6-foot by 8-foot piece of art and then continued to go bigger and bigger. His first larger scale portrait was of the 1920s impressionistic actor Conrad Veidt, who starred in “The Man Who Laughs” and who was the inspiration for DC comics’ character The Joker. Mural, Page 3

he Westmoreland Cultural Trust is spreading its wings to bring art to communities throughout the county. This summer, the trust is partnering with several local communities to bring a set of wings to their towns created by artist and

California native Patrick Mahoney that will incorporate the important ideas, concepts and values of those communities. “The ‘art in the alley’ concept was created to feature some of our local artists and provide a destination spot to explore the arts,” said Kelli Brisbane, the trust’s director of corporate engagement and events states. The original set of 3-D art wings,

located in art alley beside The Palace Theatre has drawn a following of individuals who take their picture near the wings and then post the pictures on social media with the hashtag WCTWings and WCTsArtintheAlley. Mahoney used the surrounding area as inspiration, and within the wings’ designs are significant locations in Greensburg such as The Palace Theatre’s marquee, the county courthouse,

and White Rabbit’s distinctive logo. These 46” X 97.5” wings were first painted on canvas before a high-resolution photo of the work was enlarged and printed on vinyl then adhered to a metal sheet and cut out to hang in the alley. “When we started the project, we always intended to expand out at some Initiative, Page 12

musicreview Ingrid Michaelson — ‘Stranger Songs’ With her latest album, Ingrid Michaelson conveys her love for the series “Stranger Things.” The popular Netflix show recently unveiled its third season to enthusiastic fans eagerly wanting to find out what supernatural happenings await the young group of friends in their rural Indiana town. With “Stranger Songs,” Michaelson delivers 11 tracks that examine the show’s characters and reflect their current relationships while they navigate the innocence and awkwardness of teenage life as a variety of bizarre occurrences threaten their normal and boring community. The new arrangements highlight universal themes of love and acceptance and possess a nostalgic feel of

the 1980s through a delightful blending of sweet pop stylings and smooth electric synth, fronted by Michaelson’s dazzling voice. “Freak Show” opens the album and sets the mood with a positive message for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider or was treated differently from the others. The tune aptly describes how the show’s quirky friends look after one another and take pride in being unique from the rest of the pack. “Young and in Love” explores the budding romances materializing within the group as well as expands on the topics of inclusion and security found in the track opener as Michaelson sings, “We’re never alone/If we got each other, we can save the world.” Once love is discovered, you always

point, and now that the alley is pretty full (of art) and we have an opportunity to apply for another grant, we figured this was as good as any time to expand the idea,” said Brisbane. Brisbane said the trust is hoping the project will strengthen community recognition of the trust in other towns within Westmoreland County and bring other trust programs to these areas. “It’s a proven fact that art improves community,” she said. “We are very much looking forward to spreading our wings across Westmoreland.” The initial communities that will be getting a pair of wings include Ligonier at the town hall courtyard, Scottdale at West Overton Museum, Jeannette at Sobel’s Obscure Brewery and Vandergrift at the Casino Theatre. There are also plans for wings in Latrobe and New Kensington, although the exact location has yet to be determined. “A similar concept will be used in each of the locations for Wings Across Westmoreland, with each piece of artwork representing the area in which they are installed,” said Brisbane.

A new set of art wings will make its way to this wall at West Overton in Scottdale.

Mahoney said it was Brisbane’s idea to reach out through Facebook to the different communities to get ideas of their favorite spots or landmarks. The responses is what he will draw from when creating each set of wings. “I am now beginning the research and design phase and am hoping to finish the first four sets by the end of this

month,” he said, adding that each set takes about 12 hours. “We are waiting to hear from four more cities that are very interested.” Mahoney added that installation should be towards the beginning of August. “The best thing about this project will be knowing that other communities will have the same shared experience

of having their own set of wings,” he said. “When my daughter and I are painting in the alley we get to experience first hand the popularity of the wings. Just about everyone will stop there to take a picture.” Brisbane said each set of wings costs $575 and they are continuing to look for sponsors for the creation of more wings, adding that some towns

themselves have agreed to sponsor them. “The main goal of this project is to draw people to the different communities with art and hope they’ll stay in the community for a bit to explore and see what all it has to offer,” she said. “The arts are what’s going to grow Westmoreland County and the Westmoreland Cultural Trust is willing

to spearhead that and plant seeds in these communities.” April Kopas, the new chief executive officer of the trust, said the project is encouraging. “The trust is tasked with leading the development of the arts and culture county wide and I’m really proud of the work that the staff has done with this project,” she said.

Cocks said they are also in talks with the building along East Crawford Avenue that houses Nicholson’s Chiropractic as well as possible pieces at the Edwin S. Porter theater in the Connellsville Community Center.

“We’re hoping to put all of these pieces of art together to make an art trail,” he said. “We already have a lot of art here and these will add another layer of art to Connellsville and hopefully get more people to walk the town and

heighten the chance of them going to a store and spending some money.” Raymer’s plans were to begin the project in mid-July, and he will be in the area for six to eight weeks creating the mural, depending on the weather.

“Hands down there will be way more cans of spray paint used than I’ve ever used before,” he said, adding that the most he’s ever used to this point has been around 200 cans, but estimates this project to take about 400 to 500 cans.

onfilm Long-awaited live action ‘Lion King’ opens Friday

Whether it’s entertainment news, daily talk shows or even prime time news, you can’t tune in to any of these without seeing interviews with the stars of the long-awaited liveaction film “The Lion King” that released today. Donald Glover (“Solo: A Star Wars Story” and “Atlanta”) will take the helm as lead character Simba, but it was the casting of singer Beyoncé Knowles as Nala that has seemingly drawn the most attention. In an interview on Oprah’s OWN network, Knowles said, “I’m so excited for my kids to see it, but it means even more to share this experience and this culture of The Lion King with my mother and my family,” she said. Twenty-five years after the original animated film was released, James Earl Jones (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Coming to America”) will reprise his role as Simba’s father, Mufasa. The rest of the cast includes: John Oliver (“The Smurfs” and “The Love Guru”) as Zazu, John Kami (”Black Panther” and “Ghost in the Darkness”) as Rafiki and Seth Rogan (“Superbad” and “Knocked Up”) and Billy Eichner (“Angry Bird Movie” and “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising”) as the lovable duo of Pumbaa and Timon. But despite all of the hype for the film, the

movie review website Rotten Tomatoes shows a surprising poor response from critics with just a 59 percent rating on the Tomatometer. “It hangs together better than the horrid, live-action Aladdin remake that came out in May, but that’s not saying much,” said Top Critic John Wendell with the Denver Post. “Most viewers will find this Lion King to be either eye-candy or uncanny valley. There’s so little in

between.” Top Critic Michael O’Sullivan with the “Washington Post” said, “Yes, this movie is a safari to the shadowland, and it’s just deep enough to give a cat who’s come of age something to sink his teeth into.” Regardless of the poor critic ratings, it will more than likely come out on top at the box office this weekend. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film is rated PG for sequences of

violence and peril, and some thematic elements. Other films releasing to the box office this weekend include: n “The Art of Self Defense,” directed by Riley Stearns and staring Jesse Eisenberg, Alessandro Nivola, Imogen Poots and David Zellner. After he’s attacked on the street at night by a roving motorcycle gang, timid bookkeeper Casey (Eisenberg) joins a neighborhood karate studio to learn how to protect

himself. Under the watchful eye of a charismatic instructor, Sensei (Nivola), and hardcore brown belt Anna (Poots), Casey gains a newfound sense of confidence for the first time in his life. The film is rated R for violence, sexual content, graphic nudity and violence. n “Rosie,” directed by Paddy Breathnach and staring Sarah Greene and Moe Dunford. The film tells the story of a mother trying to protect

her family after their landlord sells their rented home and they become homeless. Over 36 hours, Rosie and her partner John Paul strive to find somewhere to stay while shielding their young family from the reality of the situation around them. The film is rated PG13 for thematic material. The synopsis for each of these films is taken from rottentomatoes. com.

‘Breakthrough’ story shows that miracles do happen By Rachel Basinger

rbasinger@heraldstandard.com

Imagine having your child submerged in ice cold water for 15 minutes. The only thought would have to be hope that he is okay, even though you would know in the recesses of your mind that would be nearly impossible. This was the true life experience of Joyce and Brian Smith when their adopted son John Smith fell through the ice, and their experience is the premise for the film “Breakthrough,” which was released to rental outlets this week. Joyce Smith (Chrissy Metz, “This Is Us” and “Sierra Burgess is a Loser”) shows tremendous resolve in this faithbased film and refuses to give up on her son, even though his body lies lifeless in the hospital. Her steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to pray for John’s recovery, even in the face of every case history and scientific prediction. Adapted for the screen from Joyce Smith’s own book, “Breakthrough” is a reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a miracle. Other actors in the film include Josh Lucas (“Sweet Home Alabama” and “A Beautiful Mind”) as Brian Smith, Topher Grace (“SpiderMan 3” and “That 70s Show”) as Pastor Jason Noble, Marcel Ruiz (“One Day at a Time”

20th Century Fox

and “Snowfall”) as John Smith and Lisa Durupt (“Shall We Dance” and “Preggoland”) as Paula Noble. On the website Rotten Tomatoes, the Tomatometer gives the critic score of just 59 percent while the audience score is much higher at 83 percent. Top Critic Rex Reed with the “Observer” said in his review that the film is “Another glib and unconvincing faithbased movie that pushes miracles, spirituality

and divine intervention, hoping for box-office gold. A terrific cast in the only thing that saves it from last rites.” David Aldridge with “Radio Times” said “Chrissy Metz makes her presence felt as the boy’s mum, and Topher Grace and Josh Lucas bring modest star power to a slick if sometimes slushy against-the-odds drama that’s perfectly watchable, whether you subscribe to its claims or not.” Directed by Roxann

Dawson, the film is rated PG for thematic content including peril. Other films released to rental outlets this week include: n “Shazam,” directed by David F. Sandberg and starring Joshua Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong II and Jack Dylan Grazer. We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s case, by shouting out one word--SHAZAM!--this streetwise 14-year-old

foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam, courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart--inside a ripped, godlike body-Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! This film is rated PG13 for intense sequences of action, language and suggestive material. n “Family,” directed by Laura Steinel and staring Taylor Schilling, Bryn Vale, Jessie Ennis

and Brian Tyree Henry. Socially inept Kate is tasked with babysitting her equally awkward niece Maddie for her brother. Things go from bad to worse when Maddie runs off to join the Juggalos, meaning Kate must deal with her own issues of social paranoia to help bring her back. This film is rated R for language, some sexual content and drug use. The synopsis for each of these films is from rottentomatoes.com.
