he Chesapeake Region of the Porsche Club of America (pca-chs) serves it’s club members and hosts activities within the Baltimore, Annapolis and surrounding geographic area, including Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The general objectives of PCACHS are, as indicated in the

by laws:  Promote the highest standards of courtesy and safety on the roads.  Promote the enjoyment and sharing of goodwill and fellowship engendered by owning a Porsche vehicle and engaging in such social or other events as may be agreeable to the membership.  Promote the maintenance of the highest standards of operation and performance of the marquee by sharing and exchanging technical and mechanical information.  Establish and maintain mutually beneficial relations with Porsche AG, Porsche Cars North America (PCNA), Porsche dealers, and other independent service sources to the end the marquee shall proper and continue to enjoy its unique leadership and position in sports car annals.  Promote the interchange of ideas and suggestions with other PCA Regions throughout North America and the world, and in such corporation as may be desirable.  Establish such mutually corporative relationships with other car clubs as may be desirable.  Establish a community service initiative with the goal of engaging members to participate in activities that benefit the community through fundraising or volunteering of time. On August 20th, our social Chairs, Gene and Sharon O’Dunne welcomed us to Nicks Fish House in South Baltimore. It was a great turnout of our wonderful members along with fabulous food. As you know, everyone is welcome to each monthly Social, so please come out to any of our events. On August 25th, we had originally planned to hold our Meet and Greet at Porsche of Towson, but due to our staff being overworked we put the word out too late, so we decided to cancel, but on August 26th, we held the 48th Chesapeake 5 Challenge and it sold out

from our president quickly! This year it was held at the Linganore Winecellars in Mount Airy, MD. The location offered a beautiful vineyard set on lush rolling hills as far as I eye could see, as the backdrop. Couple the setting with the wonderful weather, then you have a perfect setting to display our member Porsche vehicles. The cars were the icing on the cake. The food and camaraderie were remarkable along with the day full of challenging events from The Concours d’Elegance, The “Street Prepared” wash and shine category, The Gimmick Rally and the multiplechoice Porsche History and Tech quiz.

F

orty years ago in September 1977 Frank Salemi’s Interstate Tire was offering brand-new Michelin tires, XaS 165HR15, for only $44.16, and the super sticky XWX, size 185/70VR15, for $97.48. He also offered adjustable Koni shocks for $42.67 front and $29.33 rear. Frank still had 2 stores back then, the main one on Orchard Tree Lane in Towson and the satellite (Hmmm, that word didn’t exist back then, did it?) in Arbutus. We also learned that Chesapeake Challenge 10, headquartered at the Cross Keys Inn in Columbia, MD was a huge success despite a lot of rain on Saturday, with a staff of 17 people not including Concours d’Elegance judges. Among the many attendees (exact number not noted but we recall about 75 cars) were Lee and Brenda Roy our Downeast Region, who were inspired to go back to Maine (“upcountry”) and start their own multi-Region weekend event. Carl Miao (pronounced “Mayo”) alerted us to the fact that radar detectors were still legal in Maryland. Lee Raskin reported on his recent trip to Los Angeles where he saw literally hundreds of Porsches, including many 356s, for sale at ridiculously low prices. How about a very nice Speedster for under $10k? (Who knew, right?). Club President Ted Goodwin reported on his trip to San Francisco where he saw numerous Porsches at the airport parking garage, including an older 911, some 924s, 356A, 914, and a Drauz roadster.

hirty years ago, in September 1987 we find Bob Schmitt as President, and our meetings moved to the Quality Inn Towson. Bob Gutjahr announced a “Patriot Games Fall Foliage Spectacular” gimmick rallye to celebrate the release of Tom Clancy’s Patriot Games novel. (y’all knew Tom Clancy was from Baltimore, right? He went to Loyola High School). An autocross school was planned for the month at Towson State University, and a Drive-nDine was scheduled for early October with dinner at the Penwick House in Dunkirk MD. (Sadly, a search shows this long closed). Finally, a treasurer’s report showing the club’s balance cash-on-hand at $1,956.67.

Upcoming Event - Driving Tour No. 8 DRIVE TO PCA POTOMAC’S ‘GATHERING OF THE FAITHFUL’ PCA-CHS 2017 Tour No. 8, Saturday, Sept. 16th (New Date)

T

his 69-mile drive will take us on scenic back roads and old-fashioned highways in Baltimore, Carroll and Frederick counties as we head to Shepherdstown, West Virginia. After about two hours on the road, we will arrive at the Bavarian Inn, the new venue of PCA Potomac’s annual “Gathering of the Faithful.” This event is a car show and social that celebrates 356’s and other

Porsches.

MEETING PLACE We will gather at 7:30 AM at the parking lot behind Kecco's Woodfire Kitchen, 114 Westminster Pike, Reisterstown, MD 21136. Note that the restaurant does not open until 11:00 AM, so we will not be able to use its restrooms. Our drivers' meeting will begin at 7:45 AM, and we will depart by 8:00 AM. Restroom visits before 7:30 AM could be made nearby at a Food Lion supermarket, a Dunkin’ Donuts shop, a Shell gas station and a Royal Farms gas station. We will have a pit stop during our drive. INFORMATION ABOUT THE DESTINATION AND THE GATHERING Our destination is the Bavarian Inn, 164 Shepherd Grade Rd, Shepherdstown, WV 25443. There are several formal and casual dining options at this AAA Four-Diamond inn: Make your own lunch reservations as soon as possible at www.bavarianinnwv.com or by calling 304-876-2551. Details about the 10am-to-2pm “Gathering of the Faithful” are available on PCA Potomac’s website https:// pcapotomac.org/. There will be an optional $5 fee for those who would like to join the door prize raffle. The fee is payable onsite. REGISTRATION Register for this event at http://www.clubregistration.net. The registration DEADLINE is 11:59 PM, September 11th. There is no sign-up fee for joining the driving tour. We need to know the number of cars, and car occupant names for our preprinted PCA waiver forms. llen Beck has chaired the Porsche Parade’s Gimmick Rally since its inception at the 50th Parade in Hershey in 2005. It was something entirely

new to the Parade schedule, inspired by the success of fun, low-key gimmick rallies across PCA on the regional level. Since then, the Parade Gimmick Rally has become one of the most

che Parade In Spokane popular events at Parade, because unlike the TSD rally, you can drive anything and bring the whole family along. The rallies are always fun, highlighting the local history, unique attractions, scenic drives and overall flavor of each Parade location – including suggested stops along the way for something that you might not otherwise see or experience anywhere else. The “gimmicks” have generally been suggested by something about the route and its possibilities that “inspires” Ellen…. and that changes every year. Just like a box of chocolates... you never know what you’re going to get! And every year

seems to bring a new gimmick and even more rallyists to join in the fun. For the second year in a row, it was the largest moving car competitive event at Parade. For 2017’s Gimmick Rally at Spokane, Ellen enlisted the support of Chesapeake Region to put on a Doozy of a Floozy poker rally, which combined the unique history of the Pacific Northwest with a spectacular drive through the logging and mining country of eastern Washington and western Idaho. The 135-mile rally ran south from Spokane down to Rockford, WA, then further

Ellen’s Doozy of A Floozy Rally At Porsc east and south to St Maries, Idaho. It then doubled back north by northeast and traveled through Idaho’s logging country, past Rose Lake and hugged the Coeur D'Alene River up into the mountains and mining country, eventually up and over Dobson Pass and down the mountain into Wallace, Idaho. Wallace is famous for being the "Silver Capital of the World". Every downtown building is on the National Register of Historic Places... which is why the federal government finally had to go over the town, instead of through it, in order to complete the Interstate

Highway system in 1991. It really personified the Wild West for most of the past 150 years, with bordellos, saloons, and banks the principal businesses catering to the silver mining industry. There was a lot of money in town (still is) and a lot of gamblers (what else to do? Oh, wait! The saloon girls…). Ah! The saloon girls! They were an integral part of fascinating history in the area’s mining towns, particularly in Wallace. Over time, a number of enterprising ladies set up businesses to serve the “customers” in this remote mining

The Oasis Bordello, now a museum, was active well into the 1980’s, believe it or not. So what better way to (wo)man the checkpoints in a poker rally than with saloon girls. In costume. Looking like… well… floozies! J So when Ellen put out the call for floozies, Chesapeake Region was all in. And everyone was looking good on rally day, accompanied by her card sharp! Donna Brandt and Warren Schultz took on duties at the

first checkpoint at the Spokane Fairgrounds. Linda and Ron Gordon manned the second at a place called- ironically enough, FredNeck’s Saloon and Beanery- in Rockford, Washington. And Minta and Aaron Miller were at the final stop, sitting right outside the Oasis Bordello Museum in Wallace! Over 250 cars signed up for the rally, and 185 cars (over 400 people) participated on the July 13th rally day. At each checkpoint, rallyists greeted each of the card sharps and the floozies, and drew a card from a 52 card deck. The

Ellen’s Doozy of A Floozy Rally At Porsc floozy or card sharp recorded the card on the rallyist’s score sheet, and returned the card to the deck. The rallyists then threw the dice, and again the sharp or the floozy logged that total on the score sheet. As part of their score sheet, rallyists wrote the names of famous floozies they met along the way, and each floozy was all too

happy to provide her nom de guerre. Before the end of the rally, rally teams had to research and ‘discover’ the history of each floozy and match them on the answer sheet. Our Chesapeake girls and guys really got into the spirit of the day, their costumes, and their alter egos.

Linda was Josie Moran [aka Josi/Jesse Morin/ Moore - She was a very well-known madam in the first half of the 20th Century who ran a booming business at the U&I Rooms in Wallace and similar places in the Coeur d’Alenes. She was known for being a very generous lady, donating money and other helpful things when needed.

Donna Brandt was Babe Kelley: She was arrested during the North Idaho Whiskey Rebellion in 1929, in her fur coat! She became famous for kidding the officers and telling jokes during her arraignment.

I led the first 13 cars, while Steve and Janice Graham led the second group, made up of 12 cars. Randy and Michelle served as the overall tour sweepers. I had uploaded the route into the Porsche GTS Routes navigation app beforehand. Some participants used this phone app for the first time during the tour. One of them, Al Saxon, posted this comment in the app: “What an awesome route! Excitement at every turn!”

Among the 17 driving tours and rallies that Randy and I had organized since last year and up to early August, Paul Sobus declared that “this was the best” of the ones he and Lynda had attended. The comments from practically everyone else were in a similar vein. Roxane Zach even asked if this tour would be offered again because, she said, she wants to go again. And I said, “Yes, next year,” considering the overwhelmingly positive and encouraging feedback we received from virtually all who took part.

Autocross Event No. 5 - August 19, 20 A Tricky Course With A Great Turnout!

If you look at the overall results for most of our events at BWI, our courses tend to be 35 -40 seconds in length. Course #5 was definitely a different animal since all times were essentially 50+ seconds. There were more off-course calls than usual, but most drivers figured it out after a run or two. Making a course this long in a location like ours tends to decrease the fun factor due to complexity, but thankfully this course proved to be just as fun as it was challenging. Fastest time of the day (FTD) went to Anthony Martell in his 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer with a time of 48.506. Our fastest Porsche was Scott Borden in his 2014 GT3 with a time of 49.953. Greg Hartke was a close second to Scott in his 2014 Cayman S. Our largest class shootout took place in the S3 class – Greg Hartke indeed won the class and was followed by the husband-wife team of Slava and Mei Burmaka. Mei beat Slava – girl power! Great driving, folks! Our next event is the big one: Sunday, September 17th at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, MD. It has been quite a few years since any organization has used Cal Ripken Sr. Yard, but we are the ones officially kicking in the door so we will be autocross ambassadors at this event. The cost for this event is a bit higher since the lot is more expensive to rent and lunch will be provided to all participants (sub sandwiches from Park Deli in Severna Park – same food as the autocross school this year). We hope to see you all driving your Porsches in their natural environment this year!

Chesapeake Challenge - Chairperson N

The Chesapeake Region Board is looking for an Event Chair. This is a voting non-elected board position; Chesapeake Challenge Chair.

As many of you know the Chesapeake Challenge is the premier event of the year. It is a multi-event day which features: Concours d’Elegance, Gimmick Rally, Tech Quiz, Lunch, Awards Dinner, and a VIP Special Guest Speaker. We are taking a page out of the Porsche Parade handbook and are already scouting locations for following years. This requires a Chesapeake Challenge Chair to volunteer for a few years at a time. In the past, it has been detrimental seeking a Chair for each year. We are hoping to alleviate this problem with a dedicated Event Chair. Duties include: scouting and reserving location, submitting budget for Executive Council approval, coordination with your team. That's right, you get a TEAM of AWESOME volunteers to help you put this event together
