living visual barrier: an analysis A thorough analysis of the UPMC Mercy site reveals that it is not suitable for the placement of green walls. It is an exposed site - to the sun, and to several sources of wind, including natural prevailing winds, winds generated by high speed traffic, and wind generated by arrival and departure of medical helicopters to the helipad. In light of this, a deeper exploration into the idea of a living barrier was undertaken. What does it mean to be a “living visual barrier?” Our team has decided to explore alternate definitions of what it means to be living.

living: “flowing freely, as water” webster’s dictionary As a compliment to the kinetic walls, a low planting of a vine along the retaining wall will provide a neutral background for most of the year, and will supply its own interest in the fall when it turns to a stunning crimson.

The high levels of wind, which are unsuitable for live plants, is ideal for a “live” kinetic wind wall. Capturing the spirit and energy created by these several sources of wind, could in fact create a visual barrier that breathes with the energy and life of the wind.

The placement of the walls blocks the views into the loading area. The walls also invite examination. The addition of a sinuous path winding through the walls allows for this interaction. This exploration directly impacts the goals for this site.

goals:

d

Sustainably capitalize on the energy inherent in the site.

Compliment the existing landscape; use the walls to tie together the landscape of the hospital.

Add visual interest for passers by, while blocking unpleasant views into the loading area.

Provide a sustainable landscape plan in regard design, implementation, and maintenance.

Add interest for patients and staff who have the opportunity to look down on the site.

In addition, significant consideration was given to the interface of this site within the entire hospital campus. The design aims to seamlessly tie together this corner of the hospital with the rest of the hospital campus.

site plan

A series of kinetic wind walls obscures views into the loading are from Boulevard of the Allies. The kinetic wind sculptures capitalize on the many sources of wind generated in this area, and will provide year-round interest,

Marion Street

The walls will provide a pleasant view for those looking down from above, as well as a pleasant walking experience for those traversing it on the ground, or those passing by in an automobile. The intersection for Boulevard of the Allies and Marion Street is important in the movement of ambulances and other vehicles. This plan also organizes the space in a way that gives the pedestrian a clear path. Clearly defining the pedestrian paths will help to reduce conflicts between pedestrians and automobiles at the points at which they intersect. A plant palette which is colorful and interesting through the seasons will compliment this design and add further interest.
