ABOUT A.I. & Architecture

· Michael Hasey is a computational designer and graduate researcher at Carnegie Mellon University who works at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the built environment. With over 7 years of experience working within both the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, & Construction) and technology startup industries, he continually seeks out new opportunities to advance architectural creativity, efficiency and optimization through the latest computer science based techniques. · Michael’s current research focuses heavily on deep learning AI algorithms and their potential impact on architectural design processes. Current experiments involve 2D & 3D neural network algorithms (GANS, VAEs, Style Transfer, etc), synthetic architectural data generation tools, and computational pipelines that autonomously and rapidly generate large databases of architectural information for deep learning projects.

WORK EXPERIENCE Katerra Seattle, USA

Architectural Designer // R&D Team · Katerra is a technology company in Seattle that operates at all levels of the construction industry; from A.I. informed master planning to architectural design, advanced manufacturing, and end-to-end design, engineering and construction. · I managed two 6-story, 300+ unit multi-family residential buildings and led the architectural coordination and strategic project management of construction documents and construction administration, taking the building from mid-phase CD development to midphase construction. · In addition to managing an internal team, I worked closely with clients, construction teams, engineers, and consultants to pro-actively address complex design challenges with impactful and effective solutions. · While managing these projects, I helped coordinate the installation of Katerra’s first CLT (cross-laminated timber) panels, which was a landmark achievement for the company. · I also worked on a number of important R&D initiatives including the creation of innovative CLT and wall / floor assembly details that became company-wide standards. · I consistently received the highest ratings at quarterly performance reviews by a variety of managers and was promoted in July of 2019.

Architectural Designer · Rick Joy Architects is an internationally recognized architecture firm that specializes in lifestyle-based projects, including high-end single-family residences & ultra-lux resorts. · During my time there, I led the design of multiple lifestyle-based buildings within a large ultra-lux seaside resort project in Mexico and was responsible for site analysis, concep- tual design, schematic design, construction documentation, and consultant coordination. · I worked closely with senior architects and design teams to insure that the highest quality of design, construction, and client satisfaction was consistently met. Architectural Designer · The SupaMaasai Foundation is a start up company that empowers Maasai women and youth through education and entrepreneurship and is based out of Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone, Canada’s leading business incubator for technology startups. · In 2014, the foundation commissioned me to design their community / tech centre in the small Maasai town of Loodariak, Kenya. · I then traveled to Loodariak to conduct the necessary site research needed to design a functional, culturally appropriate and aesthetically pleasing building. · While there, I established partnerships with the local community, architects, contractors, universities, and politicians to help facilitate the future completion of the project. · After completing an initial design, I re-approached the project again with a second and more in-depth design while at McGill University; culminating in my master’s thesis entitled “The Maasai Knowledge Exchange”. Architectural Designer · nkA is an award winning architecture firm that designs elegant and well-crafted residential and commercial buildings across Toronto.

Front-End Digital & Web Designer · I was responsible for front-end digital & web design for two technology companies (Peytec, an industrial IoT engineering company, and UnRealty an Online pre-sale real estate company) operating out of Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone, Canada’s leading business incubator for technology startup companies. Architectural Designer · XTEN Architecture is a boutique design firm that focuses on both domestic and international residential, commercial, and cultural projects.
