Welcome to the 2021 school year. A special welcome to our families of year 8 parents. We have had a very positive start to the year, and I thank you again for your partnership and support. The term has been extremely busy and filled with a range of diverse experiences, both within the classroom and through extra curricula programs and clubs. Our first newsletter for 2021 highlights many of these experiences and showcases the outcomes our students achieve.

I acknowledge our staff returning to Adelaide High in ongoing positions and in contract positions.

Connie Soltysiak joins us as the Deputy Principal of Adelaide High School. SWIMMING CARNIVAL The annual AHS Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday February 18 at the Adelaide Aquatics Centre, North Adelaide. Students who attended the day included all Year 8 students and the Year 9 to 12 competitors only. A number of new ‘short course’ races and novelty events were introduced this year allowing more opportunities to participate. We were at the venue’s capacity and the participation rate was at an all time high. Throughout the day 722 students competed in at least one event.

5 INTERSCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL On Monday, March 1 Adelaide High School participated in the School Sport SA C Grade Interschool Swimming Championships.

It was a great opportunity for our AHS swimmers to compete in a high standard interschool competition.

A team of 38 students represented the school on the day. It was a fantastic team effort with several students swimming out of their age group to ensure that all events were covered.

relays were a feature at the end of the day with Adelaide achieving five first placings.

As a result of a strong team performance, Adelaide finished 4th in the girls’ and 1st in the boys’ competitions. With 10 schools competing on the day, Adelaide finished 2nd overall.

Congratulations to all students who competed on the day and thank you to staff members Jeremy Appleton and Megan Thomas for their organisation of the team.

Con was a student at Adelaide High School from 1994 until 1998. Richard Bolt, his Pastoral Care Group teacher describes in a school reference: “Con has made excellent efforts and achievement in his time at this school. He is both energetic and painstaking in his studies. Con’s extracurricular activities include the school jazz and concert bands, helping in the canteen, national maths and science competitions, theatre sports, chess, swimming and the soccer team. In all these activities, Con has applied himself with vigour and enthusiasm working well with others and making an excellent contribution to the school.”

Con joined the Adelaide High School staff as a music teacher in 2013. He is an integral member of the AHS Arts Learning Area Team and is passionate about music. Con establishes strong relationships with his students and will go out of his way to support individuals with their learning. This is where leadership comes in: Con builds in students a love of music and confidence to thrive, to challenge themselves and achieve beyond their expectations. Con has achieved too many outcomes to list and has contributed countless hours out of school supporting students and volunteering for the wider community.

Con loves music and he loves this school. This has become the vehicle for Con’s footprint.

Con inspires, nurtures and quietly makes a difference to the lives of so many.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY BREAKFAST On Friday March 5, four female student representatives from Adelaide High School had the privilege of attending the 2021 Adelaide International Women’s Day Breakfast, along with Katrina Miles, Helen Manning-Bennett, Stephen Kay, Amy Geue, and Shauna Kay as staff representatives. The event was streamed live from Adelaide University and viewed in multiple venues including as far as Kimba and Kangaroo Island. The Syrian Restaurant Mehl Wa Sekkar in Grange provided students with an inviting assortment of baked goods and salads to enjoy. This breakfast is the largest Annual Women’s Event on the Adelaide calendar, attracting almost 2,700 guests. The morning was hosted by Senator Hon Penny Wong. Natasha Stott Despoja AO also attended as a guest speaker and provided an honest and eye-opening perspective of her experience working in Parliament.

All funds, totalling more than $60,000 raised from the event were donated to UN Women National Committee (NC) Australia. The breakfast provided a wonderful opportunity to virtually unite in the ongoing pursuit of equality for women. The student representatives found it to be an inspiring and thought-provoking presentation.

Standards are achieved by students who swim in the top 5 percent across all swimming grades. Standards were achieved by the following students: •

CONGRATULATIONS Year 12 Zac Marriage recently competed in the AusCycling Road National Championships in Ballarat. Zac won Silver in the Under 19 Men’s Criterium and then followed it up with another Silver medal in the 105km Under 19 Men’s Road Race.

This is on top of three Silver medals Zac also won at the COVID-deferred Auscycling National Track Championships in December 2020.

Numerous students also performed well by swimming personal bests or by accumulating points for the team. The

7 DRAMA EXCURSIONS

MUSIC EXPLORATIONS SONG WRITING WORKSHOP This term, Year 11 and 12 Drama students have attended various live theatre performances in the Adelaide Fringe and the Adelaide Festival. The Year 12s headed to the Festival Theatre to watch an engaging and powerful one-man performance of Sea Wall, by Simon Stephens. Students commented on the actor’s focus on characterisation and expertly building the trajectory of the story.

In Week 3, the Stage 1 and Stage 2 Music Explorations class had the pleasure of having Joel Sweet, a Year 12 graduate from 2020, share a lesson about song writing.

Joel has written multiple songs and gave all of his tips and tricks on his process of writing lyrics, as well as coming up with chords and melodies. His lesson included a number of small activities to get us all involved and thinking creatively, which was super fun, and everyone found it enjoyable and useful. It was so helpful and gave everyone some new ideas and insights on how to start or improve on making their own music.

YEAR 10 YOUNG ARCHIE’S ENTRIES

PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN PERFORMANCE FROM JAKE DAULBY On February 23, singer/guitarist Jake Daulby came to our music centre and performed a 40 minute set to the singers of Take Note, High Society, the Rock Bands and the Year 12 Music Explorations class. Jake’s concert was nothing short of incredible, even with only a tiny mixer, acoustic guitar and a stomp box to accompany his voice.

He sang multiple medleys, jam-packed with songs from each decade so there was something that everyone loved. In addition to his performance, Jake also hosted a few workshops for the singers where we worked on our performance skills and how we present ourselves to an audience. This included finding a connection with the others that we share the stage with and developing our confidence, skills which are crucial for a successful performance. Jake’s

Selena Davoli: Year 11

As a new teacher to the school, I have been amazed by the depth of talent at Adelaide High School. Tanya Fry and I are team teaching and have been impressed with the way the Year 10 Art students have diligently worked toward the goal of producing a portrait of a person special to them. As part of the students’ current assessment, they have been required to paint, draw, or create a mixed media entry for the Young Archie’s Art Prize. The Young Archie’s Prize runs in conjunction with the renowned Archibald portraiture prize and is open to budding artists aged between 5 -18. It is our belief in the Art department that our students’ artworks can compete with the best of the nation. We wish the entrants from the school all the best. The Young Archie’s exhibition runs at the Art Gallery of NSW from the June 5 – September 26, 2021.

Finalists will be announced, May 27, 2021.

ANNA STEEN WORKSHOP In Week 3 the Year 11 Drama students were fortunate in having professional actor Anna Steen run a workshop on characterisation.

The workshop focused on stretching students to further develop character through a range of practical activities. The students learnt to listen to one another, to “just be” in front of their peers, and to create and connect with their character’s backstory. This workshop was an invaluable experience which has shaped student understanding of stage presence and character development. The students look forward to presenting the skills they have acquired through their class productions in Week 10 this term. We hope to see you there!

9 STUDENT PATHWAYS REPORT 2021 VET enrolments Welcome and welcome back to all! Congratulations to the class of 2020, who did so well!

All Years 10 – 12 VET students have commenced their vocational training, conducted at a number of Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). Upon successful completion of all requirements to a satisfactory level, students either secure SACE Stage 1 or 2 credits, in addition to their qualification / statement of attainment. Most full Certificate III qualifications can assist in ATAR generation, needed for university entrance, as well as allowing students to generate Stage 2 credits.

The chosen Certificate III qualifications are: Business, MicroBusiness, Fitness, Screen and Media (Virtual Reality and Games Design), Screen and Media (Visual Effects), Information Technology, Animal Studies, Food Processing, Early Childhood Education and Care, Design Fundamentals, Make Up, Dance and Hospitality.

Students have also enrolled in these courses, which allow them to generate Stage 2 credits: • partial Certificate III Roof Plumbing • partial Certificate III Carpentry • partial Certificate III Electrotechnology – Electrician • Certificate II Automotive Servicing Technology.

The chosen Certificate II courses for 2021, allowing students to gain Stage 1 credits, are: • Certificate II Electro-technology (Career Start) • Certificate II Construction Pathways • Certificate II Hospitality (Kitchen Operations) • Certificate II Salon Assistant • Certificate I Construction (Plumbing)

Career Expos

The annual Tertiary Studies & Career Expo Adelaide (TSCEA), incorporating the SA Work & Skills Expo, will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Sunday 28 March from 10am – 4pm and Monday 29 March 9.30am – 2.30pm. 2021 marks the 12th anniversary of this event and is well worth a visit, especially as last year’s event had to be cancelled due to COVID-19. At this year’s event young people will be able to talk to representatives from a variety of institutions. Parents / carers are welcome to this free event.

If you think your son / daughter might be keen to commence a vocational training course in Semester 2, if there is this possibility in their area of interest, ask them to contact me soon.

Important Reminders Eligible students have been asked to discuss with you at home the possibility of dropping a non-compulsory subject to help them manage their load. They are aware that they need to see their Year Level Leader to discuss this further and secure the appropriate paperwork to complete.

Students are reminded that undertaking VET takes priority over all other commitments, including major school events, or they run the risk of falling behind and incurring extra fees. Many RTOs have advised that they will also charge late submission fees to students who submit work and logbooks past stipulated due dates, especially the final due date of mid-November. Students who ignore the final deadline will be unable to have their results entered and counted for the 2021 academic year. It is crucial that Year 12s observe due dates to allow for work to be marked, results to be entered and copies of verified documents to be sent to the SACE Board of SA. This is vital for SACE and ATAR generation for those students.

VET students who need to complete structured work placement as a compulsory part of their course and who are planning to organise a placement for the coming April holidays must provide me with the completed Workplace Learning Agreement Form by the start of Week 8, Monday 15 March. Only students who have completed the specified online workplace safety course and provided me with a copy of their certificate of completion by 15 March will be permitted to undertake April school holiday work placement.
