OUR STADIUM HISTORY

PERCIVAL MOLSON MEMORIAL STADIUM The stadium is owned by McGill University and is home to the McGill Redmen, the McGill Martlets and the Montreal Alouettes

T

he Montreal Alouettes have played most of their home games at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium since November, 1997. The facility, which turns 99 years old in 2014, is named in memory of Captain Percival Molson, a McGill athlete and Canadian Olympian who died in the First World War. He was inducted posthumously to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1963 and was an inaugural honoree to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.

The legacy of Molson Stadium is that it represents an inheritance from a generation which nobly served in a long and bloody war. A significant part of the estimated original $100,000 construction costs came from “Percy” Molson, who bequeathed $75,000 in his will towards the construction of a football stadium on the McGill campus. That generous gift was the equivalent of approximately $1.34 million in today’s currency (based upon the Consumer Price Index).

Molson was born in Cacouna, Que., on Aug. 14, 1880 and developed into one of Canada’s most outstanding athletes. He was the youngest player ever to win the Stanley Cup, playing on the 1896 Cup championship Montreal Victorias at the age of 16. He graduated from McGill in 1901 with a B.A. and became the University’s first Olympian, competing at the 1904 Summer Games in St. Louis. Molson captained the McGill hockey team, starred in track, racquet sports and football and won the Individual Trophy as the school’s best “all-round athlete” for three consecutive years, a feat unmatched by any male in McGill sports history. He earned every athletic honour the University offered and set a world record in the long jump at the American Athletics Meet in 1900. Molson was renowned for his sportsmanship and earned the unique distinction of never having been penalized in any sport for unfair tactics.

Overlooking the Montreal skyline from atop Mount Royal, Molson Stadium is renowned for its charm, cozy dimensions and great sight lines. It remains one of the most scenic places in Canada to watch a spectator event. The venue serves the University as a varsity game and practice field, an intramural pitch and multi-purpose area. Over the past six decades, the Stadium has been host to field hockey for the 1976 Summer Olympics, Drum Corps International competitions, the RHR Blackwatch ceremony presided over by the Queen Mother, concerts by “The Police” (1980) and the Beach Boys (2001), a FIFA soccer tournament and numerous community events. The stadium hosted the 1931 Grey Cup game — a 22-0 victory by the Montreal Winged Wheelers over the Regina Roughriders— in front of 5,112 fans. The 1957 CFL All-Star game was also played there.

After graduation, Molson became the youngest member to serve on the McGill Board of Governors, chairing its Finance and Stadium committees. He was severely wounded overseas in the Battle of Sanctuary Wood on June 2, 1916 and received the Military Cross for gallantry and distinguished conduct in action. He insisted on returning to action and was killed by a direct hit from a trench mortar on the outskirts of Avion, France on July 5, 1917.

Construction on the stadium began in July, 1914 on an area known as Macdonald Park, named after William Macdonald, a benefactor who almost single-handeDefensive Liney financed parts of the University. Macdonald Park was to be known as “a playground for McGill students”. Originally known as McGill Graduates’ Stadium, it was designed by famed architect Percy Nobbs and officially opened on Oct. 22, 1915 with the firing of a starter’s pistol by Sir William Peterson, the McGill principal, for a

track meet in front of some 4,000 spectators. It had been hoped that the first event would have been a football game but with the outbreak of the First World War, the football season was cancelled for what proved to be four years and the stadium sat empty during the war, until it was re-dedicated as Percival Molson Memorial Stadium on Oct. 19, 1919. The first football game played there was a 25-2 victory for McGill over Queen’s on Nov. 8, 1919, which marked McGill’s first home game in five years, since a 31-7 win over Queen’s on Nov. 14, 1914. The Stadium was originally constructed with a 7,676 seat concrete grandstand as large crowds necessitated a bigger facility. The well-drained playing field was encircled by a quarter-mile running track, 18 feet in width. An immediate success, Molson Stadium became the home of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association football team, the predecessor of the Montreal Alouettes. By the 1930s, the stadium’s seating capacity had become inadequate and a gradual expansion began. Seating arrangements were entirely rebuilt, the first outdoor lighting system in Canada was installed, as was a public address system. Major. D. Stuart Forbes, then director of athletics at McGill, brought in a flock of sheep once in an attempt to improve the grass! A south grandstand was constructed and the north side was heightened. These projects brought the capacity to approximately 19,500 by the early 1960s. McGill was enjoying large crowds and a record attendance of 19,386 was recorded for a game in 1950. The Alouettes, formed in 1946, were also enjoying capacity crowds at the smaller Delormier Stadium from 1946 to 1953. They moved to Molson Stadium in 1954 and stayed until 1967. The all-time attendance record at Molson Stadium was 26,191 for a 27-21 victory by Montreal over Hamilton on Sept. 12, 1959. In 1951 Molson Stadium was also filled to capacity for the visit of Princess Elizabeth. With the advent of television and improved Montreal highways during the 1960s, the city became focused on the world’s fair, known as “Expo 67”. As intercollegiate crowds at McGill began to drop significantly, Molson Stadium began a slow decay. The Alouettes moved to the larger and newly-constructed Autostade -- which had 33,172 seats -- in 1968. They played there through 1971, before switching back to Molson Stadium for the 1972 campaign, then moved back to the Autostade, where they played from 1973 to 1976, before moving to Olympic Stadium the year after the Montreal Olympics.

In 1997, the Alouettes were forced to host a playoff game at Molson Stadium due to a concert by the Irish rock band U2 at Olympic Stadium. The game, versus the B.C. Lions on Nov. 2, was the first Alouettes game at McGill since 1972 and the Als drew an announced crowd of 16,257 after spending about $55,000 to renovate and expand the seating capacity to 18,027 with the addition of temporary end-zone seats. Over the winter of 1998, the CFL’s board of governors, in a move initiated by the clubs in western Canada, decided to provide the Alouettes with a grant of at least $250,000, and perhaps as much as $300,000, to assist with the repairs. In the spring of 1998, additional renovations valued at $309,000 were made by the Alouettes and the seating capacity was expanded to 17,317. In the spring of 1999, the Alouettes installed temporary bleachers, increasing the capacity to 19,461. A further increase in the 2001 season improved seating capacity to 19,601 with the addition of temporary seating and that figure was increased to 20,002 in time for the 2002 campaign. On Oct. 2, 2001, Pierre Bourque, mayor of Montreal, announced that an agreement had been signed with Larry Smith (then-president of the Alouettes), and Luc Vinet, then provost and vice-principal academic at McGill, to expand and renovate the stadium. Bourque pledged $4 million toward the $12.5-million expansion project, with agreements in place for the balance to come from the federal and provincial governments under the federal infrastructure program. The Alouettes also committed about $500,000 and signed a 10-year stadium lease with the University. Renovations were eventually completed in time for the 2004 season and Alouettes owner Robert Wetenhall then announced that his team had spent $1.2-million on stadium improvements. The 2004 improvements included the replacement of the 13-year-old AstroTurf surface with a new FieldTurf surface and expansion of the bleacher-type seating capacity to 20,202. The areas under both the north and south grandstands were completely renovated, including upgraded dressing rooms, showers, officials’ rooms, concession stands and washrooms. Some 15 luxury boxes were added and the outdoor lighting was significantly enhanced, in addition to the stadium access roads. In return, the public gained access to McGill’s athletic facilities, which were previously only available to students, staff and graduates. In 2010, the stadium underwent a further facelift at a cost of $29.355 million, with funding from the Quebec provincial and municipal governments, as well as a private contribution from the Wetenhall family. Seating capacity was increased to 25,012, along with the addition of 18 private loges and the state-of-the-art video board became a permanent installation. In 2013, a new drainage system was installed along with a high-performance FieldTurf Revolution surface at a cost of $1.445 million. 

In 1975, Molson Stadium received a major facelift with a government-sponsored upgrade to the facilities, including the installation of AstroTurf for field hockey during the 1976 Summer Olympics. It marked the first time that artificial turf was used for in the Olympic Games. Capacity was increased to over 20,000 with the addition of temporary seats. After 10 winters, the AstroTurf was in need of a new surface and six months after future Alouettes star Michael Soles led the McGill Redmen to the Vanier Cup in 1987, a new AstroTurf-8 carpet was installed at a cost of approximately $1

million. Much of the funding was provided by the Molson Foundation.

Prior to coaching in the CIS, Edmunds spent three years at the CEGEP AAA level, serving as a defensive backs coach with the Vanier Cheetahs (2011) and coaching linebackers with the Champlain Cougars (2006 and 2007), where he doubled as defensive coordinator in his final season. He also spent 10 years as a high-school coach, including a half-dozen seasons with perennial powerhouse College Notre-Dame. Edmunds graduated from the University of Sherbrooke with a bachelor’s degree in physical & health education (2007) and a Certificate in Chemistry (2008). He followed that with a law degree in 2014 from the University of Montreal.

cGill University is one of Canada’s best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the country’s leading research-intensive universities. With students coming to McGill from about 160 countries, our student body is the most internationally diverse of any medical-doctoral university in Canada. McGill has grown from a small college to a bustling university with two campuses, 11 faculties, more than 300 programs of study, and close to 40,000 students. The University partners with four affiliated teaching hospitals to graduate over 1,000 health care professionals each year. Today under the leadership of Principal Suzanne Fortier, McGill University is recognized as one of the Canada’s top research-intensive universities. Excelling in the quality of its research, education and service to the community, McGill ranks among the leading universities in the world. Our full-time professors lead the country with the highest research funding. The ability to balance academic excellence with the extracurricular is a hallmark of the McGill student. Our rich athletic tradition includes many Olympians as well as thousands of McGill students who participate in the hundreds of clubs, associations and community groups that enrich Montreal and contribute to a vibrant campus life. With two Prime Ministers, three astronauts, four Nobel laureates and a six-time Stanley Cup winner—plus a host of trailblazers in arts, sciences, business and public service—McGill alumni have left their imprint on our world and our universe. Some 200,000 living alumni make a difference every day, improving lives through their groundbreaking medical discoveries, plumbing the human condition in thought-provoking art and driving the economy with their business acumen.

teams are steeped in tradition and the origins of sport. The football team was founded in 1872 and had its “intercollegiate baptism” on May 13, 1874 when it traveled to Cambridge and played Harvard in the world’s first “North American style” intercollegiate football game. In 1873 James Creighton, a McGill law student, devised some informal rules for a new game which later became known as ice hockey. On March 3, 1875, two informal teams composed mainly of McGill students, played in what is recognized as the first indoor game of hockey. Two years later, McGill students formed the first organized hockey team and defeated the Victoria Skating Club 1-0 in their first official game, played on January 3, 1877. Basketball was founded in December of 1891 by James Naismith of Almonte, Ontario, who had graduated from McGill with a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1889 and became McGill’s first Director of Athletics in 1890. A year later, he moved onto a new job at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, where in 1891, Naismith devised the rules to the game of basketball. The sport was first played in Montreal’s YMCA in 1892 and subsequently began at McGill with inter-faculty games in 1894. A decade later, McGill met and defeated Queen’s in the first ever-Canadian intercollegiate basketball game in Kingston, Ontario, on February 6, 1904. Currently, with 28 different intercollegiate teams, McGill ranks among Canadian universities in total number of sports clubs. There are over 700 intramural teams plus an extensive Fitness and Recreation program that encompasses a wide variety (over 100) of non-credit fitness and recreation courses. 

McGill is among the leading academic institutions in the world with regard to the development of men’s and women’s athletics. At the varsity level, McGill FALL 2014 SEASON
