Dear Friends,

Pete Casey Norma Colunga Miro Copic Dr. Carlos T. Cortez David Cota Johari DeWitt-Rogers Bob Countryman Enrique Flores Danielle Frazier Montele Graves Matthew Guillory Gil Harlan Tim Harris

On behalf of our Board of Directors, our gala committee and the entire staff at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA, I would like to thank you for joining us tonight as we celebrate the incredible accomplishments of our college bound seniors with gala awards, assisting in their goal of higher education. With these incredible young men and women, we have now given over 200 scholarships since 1997! Along with these accomplished students, we are also celebrating the grand opening of our new facility. The incredible vision and direction led by Michael Brunker, funded generously with individuals like yourself, has materialized into the most beautiful YMCA in the county. Since the doors opened in October 2017, the membership base has increased tremendously, serving even more deserving families in our service area. However, we continue to need your support to meet the needs of our community in Southeastern San Diego, one of city’s most critical neighborhoods. Your donations tonight help provide much needed gala awards to help our families who need a safe and healthy environment for their children, teaching social responsibility as well participating in sports, camps, family holiday events and the awards to assist in higher education We would like to acknowledge each and every one of your generous and continued support. Thank you very much and we are looking forward to see you again next year!

Jerry Coleman’s Last Words As Honorary Chair, 2013 It was in January of 1997 when the San Diego Padres built the first Little Padres Park at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA in honor of Major League Baseball’s 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking its color barrier. Three $1,000 Gala Awards were distributed that year at a Jackie Robinson Tribute Gala, and Jerry Coleman guaranteed that this event would continue every year after. Over the 23 year history, we have now awarded over 213 Gala Awards to college-bound high school seniors that either live in or go to school in our Southeastern San Diego service area. Here is Jerry’s last letter as Honorary Chair of the Gala, written for the 2013 Gala Souvenir Program. These words are as true today as they were last year, and will ring true for many, many years to come. And you can hang a star on THAT, baby! “The young people who applied for Gala Awards from the Jackie Robinson YMCA this year are inspiring to me. They have overcome the personal and academic challenges they have faced, and are determined to build for themselves a bright, productive future. They have extraordinary ability to expand their horizons and their ambitions, and to nurture their talents. They will not only achieve their own success, but they will encourage success as role models for the young people who follow them. They have an amazing spirit of hope and adventure. They will defy the old, tired stereotypes because they are working hard and planning to meet their goals - for their families, their professions, their communities, and themselves. On behalf of our kids, on behalf of everyone at the YMCA, thanks for being a part of this great success story.”

ALL ABOUT...

JACKIE ROBINSON

Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919 to a family of sharecroppers. His mother, Mallie Robinson, single-handedly raised Jackie and her four other children. They were the only black family on their block, and the prejudice they encountered only strengthened their bond. From this humble beginning would grow the first baseball player to break Major League Baseball’s color barrier that segregated the sport for more than 50 years. Growing up in a large, single-parent family, Jackie excelled early at all sports and learned to make his own way in life. At UCLA, Jackie became the first athlete to win varsity letters in four sports: baseball, basketball, football and track. In 1941, he was named to the All-American football team. Due to financial difficulties, he was forced to leave college, and eventually decided to enlist in the U.S. Army. After two years in the army, he had progressed to second lieutenant. Jackie’s army career was cut short when he was court-martialed in relation to his objections with incidents of racial discrimination. In the end, Jackie left the Army with an honorable discharge. In 1945, Jackie played one season in the Negro Baseball League, traveling all over the Midwest with the Kansas City Monarchs. Greater challenges and achievements were in store for him. In 1947, Brooklyn Dodgers president Branch Rickey approached Jackie about joining the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Major Leagues had not had an African-American player since 1889, when baseball became segregated. When Jackie first donned a Brooklyn Dodger uniform, he pioneered the integration of professional athletics in America. By breaking the color barrier in baseball, the nation’s preeminent sport, he courageously challenged the deeply rooted custom of racial segregation in both the North and the South.

At the end of Robinson’s rookie season with the Brooklyn Dodgers, he had become National League Rookie of the Year with 12 homers, a league-leading 29 steals, and a .297 average. In 1949, he was selected as the NL’s Most Valuable player of the Year and also won the batting title with a .342 average that same year. As a result of his great success, Jackie was eventually inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. Jackie married Rachel Isum, a nursing student he met at UCLA, in 1946. As an African-American baseball player, Jackie was on display for the whole country to judge. Rachel and their three children, Jackie Jr., Sharon and David, provided Jackie with the emotional support and sense of purpose essential for bearing the pressure during the early years of baseball. Jackie Robinson’s life and legacy will be remembered as one of the most important in American history. In 1997, the world celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Jackie’s breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier. In doing so, we honored the man who stood defiantly against those who would work against racial equality and acknowledged the profound influence of one man’s life on the American culture.

JACKIE ROBINSON FAMILY YMCA

HONORING THE GREATNESS OF TOMORROW

With a focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA serves an ethnically diverse community of over a quarter of a million people in Southeastern San Diego. Every day we extend our reach to people of all ages with a variety of needs and interests.

OUR FAMILIES Since becoming members in 2014, the De La Torre family has developed strong personal and community relationships by coming to the Y together. Not only do they share family time exercising together in the Wellness Center, they also like to swim, play basketball and attend tutoring twice a week. Having four boys can be tough and the Y has proven to be a great place for them to get exercise, release positive energy, and enjoy a variety of activities that suits every member of the family.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS Being healthy means more than simply being physically active. It’s about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. Roughly 85 % of our membership is low to moderate income, so it is especially important that we strive to provide a variety of programs for all family members in order to keep our community moving, healthy, and safe. We offer a wide variety of programs such as Child Watch, TAKE 5 Tickets for Kids, Fit4Me, Forever Fit, Group Exercise Classes, and family events. We have opportunities for fun, learning, and exercising at any age!

CHILD & YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Between our 14 ASES contracts, we serve over 1,600 students, in grades Pre-K through 8th daily. Often times, we are the only safe and consistent thing in their young lives. The Child & Youth Development Program provides elementary and middle school students with a fun and engaging learning environment during the hours most parents/guardians are working. We are dedicated to improving the quality of human life and helping all people realize their fullest potential as children of God through the development of the spirit, mind, and body.

6

THE 23RD ANNUAL JACKIE ROBINSON FAMILY YMCA GALA

AQUATICS Our Y serves an ethnically diverse community of over a quarter of a million people. It is estimated that 33,000 children ages 5-12, who live in the service area of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA, have never taken swimming lessons to develop a healthy respect for the water. Thanks to the generosity of The Saxten Family, The Girard Foundation, The Hunter Family, and a Neighborhood Reinvestment Program Grant from the County of San Diego; we are on track to adding one of the finest Aquatic Centers in our community. The new Aquatic Center will benefit people of all ages across a variety of programs including swimming lessons, lap swimming, water exercise, splash pad, swim team and more.

SPORTS & RECREATION The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA sports program focuses on team-work, sportsmanship, and fun! Our baseball, basketball, flag football, and soccer leagues promote the YMCA character development philosophy, which emphasizes the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. These are recreational leagues and we welcome all ages 3-15 and all skill levels. Additional opportunities are available for cheer, dance and Pee Wee Sports.

DAY CAMP Take a moment to imagine growing up in San Diego. Now take a moment to reminisce about the memories you have had at the world famous San Diego Zoo, San Diego’s iconic beaches, or the first class Petco Park. Exciting, right? For many of the 1,999 campers that we served last summer, Day Camp afforded them the opportunity to step outside of their neighborhood and experience memories that will last a lifetime. Your contributions made it possible for the majority of those 1,999 campers to attend Day Camp. The Jackie Robinson Family Y is dedicated to creating lifelong memories and values for each of participants!

OUTREACH Through our Outreach Department we offer free community events such as the Halloween Carnival, families enjoy a safe and fun Halloween at our Y; the Turkey Project, we provide over 200 families a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving; our Community Holiday Party in which we provide each child in attendance a toy for the holidays; and Healthy Kids Day, where families can enjoy healthy activities and healthy food. In addition, our Outreach Department oversees the Community Response Team. The Community Response Team provides different types of resources to families who have been impacted by violence. We helped over 250 families annually. Our Outreach Department makes it their mission to ensure the Southeastern community understands that the Y is a safe haven they can rely on. 2019 GALA AWARD RECEPIENTS SDG&E Inspirational Award

ANGEL LEE - SAN DIEGO HIGH SCHOOL Education is the key to unlocking opportunities that will ultimately empower yourself. The Jackie Robinson YMCA Gala Award is important to me because it provides young students, like myself, with hope. It also empowers us to pursue our dreams and passions. When I think about receiving an award named after a great man, I reflect on how he did not allow obstacles to stop him from pursuing what he loved to do. Jackie Robinson broke down both social and color barriers. This serves as inspiration and tells me that with hard work and dedication the possibilities are limitless. I hope to become a great fashion designer that will use my platform to address social issues and inspire the youth to be who they want to be.

San Diego Padres Jerry Coleman Perpetual Award

AARON JAMES REYNOLDS JR. - LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL

I have come to realize that education in my neighborhood is taken for granted rather than pursued. I hold my education most dear to myself, never slacking off and seizing every opportunity that comes my way. I feared that my journey to college would be all by myself, but I have an extensive amount of support and I’m glad the Jackie Robinson YMCA is helping me along the journey too, with this Gala Award. I want to be able to obtain a degree in Nursing so I can provide that reassurance to the urban youth that Black minds are powerful. A college degree will provide validation for my studies, and a career choice in the world. I feel like by going to college, I can develop the correct tools and resources needed to help bring unity to my community.

Shadek Family Foundation Award

ALONZO DURAZO - MORSE HIGH SCHOOL

To me education means gaining skills to prepare you for future obstacles that can be challenging to develop a brighter future. Furthering my education will allow me to acquire information that will help me enhance my intelligence. It will also build me into a better version of myself. Money has been an obstacle for my education so earning this award will benefit me with my school supplies, books, parking permit and even purchasing gear for baseball since I will be playing it in college. I will be more focused on pursuing my education goal in Child Development rather than working to pay for my education. Eventually this will lead me to look back and see my accomplishment and remember the support and guidance I was given from Jackie Robinson YMCA, my community and Family.

Accredited Home Lenders Award

GISELLA DIRCIO SANCHEZ - HIGH TECH HIGH Education is about growing and applying what you learn to real life. My parents did not have the opportunity to finish school. So I am a first-generation college student. The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA Gala Award is important to me because it is helping me pursue my dream to be a lawyer and a role model to other first-generation Latinas. It is important for younger students to see people who look like them succeed. This award is helping me show younger students of color that with hard work and dedication, you can do anything.

Saxten Family Foundation Award

JAMAHD MONROE - LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL

My mom has always pushed furthering my education at the next level. So, education to me is something so powerful that can constantly be renewed and empowered the more you work at it. Education is something that cannot be taken from me. The Y’s Gala Award is important to me because it’s an opportunity and stepping stone to help me get my education to the next level. This award will further my goals because once I get to Montana State University and earn my degree I’ll have the opportunity to network and comeback to community to partner with the future generations of success and show them all the people who are here to help the continue down their path of greatness.

JAZMINE MARIE SCOTT - GOMPERS PREPARATORY ACADEMY

What education means to me is something that is not given to you. You have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone so you can explore different topics. I plan on furthering my education next year at the University of Cincinnati with the help of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA Gala Award. I will be double majoring in Psychology and Nutritional Science. It is important for me to get a higher education so I can help children in my community. I want to help them learn more about mental health and ways to have a healthy lifestyle. I hope to give back to the children in my community by showing them that all things are possible with strong faith, hard work and determination.

McKewon Family Fund Award

KYLEN DENT- LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL To me, education is an investment in yourself. The more work you put in the greater your reward. I have actively attended the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA since I was in middle school. I have participated in summer camp, sport teams, utilize the weight room, and enjoyed the pool with my family. Since those days, I’ve dreamt about college. Now, I have reached the point in my life where that dream has become reality. It almost unbelievable! This award is significantly important to me because it will help me further my collegiate goals financially. It will give me the confidence necessary to pursue other scholarships and opportunities. I will be able to focus on my studies and my family will have one less thing to worry about while I am away.

Wells Fargo Foundation Award

SUSAN FALLAS JIMENEZ- GOMPERS PREPARATORY ACADEMY

Education is my road to success. To me, education means being open to hearing new ideas and learning new skills. With an education, new doors of opportunities will be opened to me that will allow me to help others and myself. The award is important to me because it takes a burden off my family’s back and offers me an opportunity I wouldn’t have had 12 years ago. Through this award I am helping pave the way for my younger brother to one day pursue his education. Being born in Costa Rica and immigrating to the U.S. made me realize how fortunate I was to even pursue an education. I saw how many people would love to be in my position, which encouraged and inspired me to work hard despite the obstacles put in my way.

Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation Award

T’RAY KIRKLAND - LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL

Education is a necessity in order to become successful. Knowledge is power that you’re able to spread among others and watch as their able to build off it. An The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA Gala Award will benefit me by helping with the finicial issues that come with school. Growing up money has always been tight so to receive this scholarship reduces a lot of stress. T’ray was recently named the recipient of the National Football Foundation Willie James Jones Jr. Scholarship Award.

United Domestic Workers Foundation Award

VICTORIA OROZCO - GOMPERS PREPARATORY ACADEMY 33 years ago my parents made the decision to immigrate to the US. Because of their bravery and determination. I am where I am today. They did everything in their power to provide an education for me. Now, I am doing everything in my power to show them that their journey was worth it. Education is my pathway to a better life. Through a sociology major, I hope to take on a career in the education system and help create solutions to the issues in education that many first generation students like me will encounter. The Jackie Robinson YMCA Gala Award is important for me because it will allow me to be the first one in my family to seize an education without the worry of not being able to afford it.

Farrell Family Foundation Award

CHRISTIAN TOCOL - LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL Education to me is everything, and by everything I mean using education as an escape from the hardships that run rampant in the Southeast and allowing me to move up social class. The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA is near and dear to my heart because the mission of helping kids through such as, poverty and violence is exactly what I strive to do every day. This YMCA Gala Award will further my goals by limiting the burden of financial hardships. THE 23RD ANNUAL JACKIE ROBINSON FAMILY YMCA GALA

JERRY COLEMAN

Sixty one years I’ve been in baseball. I’ve played and worked with some of the all-time legends, like Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams and Dave Winfield. Right near the top of that list was Jackie Robinson, who not only broke records, he shattered the barriers. He not only made a big difference in the game, he forever changed baseball. Jackie led, so that players like Satchel Paige, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron could follow. But Jackie’s contribution shouldn’t be measured on his batting average. It’s much bigger than that. Jackie wanted to make a difference in the lives of at-risk kids—with mentoring programs and scholarships for deserving youth. Join me as we fight that good fight - to give a better future to our kids. When it comes to our kids, we all have to pitch in.

MARSHALL FAULK

I am all about giving kids a chance to beat the odds and leave their own legacy. The Jackie Robinson YMCA has been doing this every day for the past seventy years. I believe that the kids that are successful and the ones that make it they leave the legacy by them achieving what they achieve in life and we will find out five, ten, fifteen years down the line when these kids start giving back to their communities because they remember how they got to where they are right now. Imagine what a new Y in its current location will do to help kids join teams, not gangs.

TONY GWYNN

I would have never have received an opportunity in baseball if Jackie Robinson hadn’t played well and handled himself in the proper manner. Without Jackie, there would not be me. I always try to take his way and apply it to what I do. I think about Jackie all the time and ask myself, “What would he have done?” He proves the value in thinking things through. You can’t just react. You must look at both sides of any situation and appreciate the other person’s perspective. My wife Alicia and I have been longtime supporters of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. Jackie said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” At this Y, they are making an impact where it is needed the most.

Every day my wife and I feel blessed to wake up in the life we have, and it has nothing to do with fame or fortune. It has to do with the togetherness we’ve built with family, friends and everybody we meet. I feel that we have a W in the game of life. Success can happen for anybody with any background if you plan, pursue, and persevere just like the Safe At Home Capital Campaign. The Jackie Robinson YMCA is a great team that is earning a W in the game of life, and by being Awesome, Baby, with a Capital A!

Now it’s time for me to help other people with their dreams. Giving back is an important part of that. Our responsibility to the next generation our duty to leave this world a better place for our children and theirs. I care about the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. I played there as a kid and my kids can say the same. I care about San Diego. That’s why I’m involved. You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you. Don’t measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability.

DAVE WINFIELD

I came to San Diego and the Padres in 1973, and early on I sought out the organization that best put forth efforts that supported youth and the community. I immediately found that to be the Jackie Robinson YMCA. Since then they continuously show dedication, heart and excellence in reaching and impacting all they serve. I’ve worked with and supported their efforts personally through my foundation and through the Padres organization for nearly 40 years. That alone could say it all, but certainly the Jackie Robinson YMCA is a great team to be a part of.

KELLEN WINSLOW

There is no greater honor than to be of service to others. For years the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA has provided educational and recreational services to a unique and diverse community in San Diego. I have witnessed the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA grow into an integral and vital part of the community. The Safe at Home Capital Campaign is the next step in providing even greater facilities and services to families of Southeast San Diego. I am honored to serve as a member of the Safe at Home Capital Campaign Hall of Fame Cabinet. Please join me and my fellow Members of the Hall of Fame Cabinet.
