I envision a world where young leaders work together to advocate for equity in education and healthcare at local, national and global levels.

Motivational Letter

“The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things, but is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.” -Ronald Reagen Dear IFMSA Family, It is with immense pleasure and honor that I, Muhammad Ibrahim Khan, present to you my candidature for Interim Liaison Officer to Student Organizations 2020-21. Inviting you to my world of motivation and passion for advocacy is an episode I have been waiting for. I do not think I could ever ascribe my passion for advocacy to an epiphany or a single revolutionary event, rather I believe it is the mere translation of an intrinsic personality trait anyone could have identified in me, since childhood. But yes, this trait did find its haven in IFMSA, as I take a look back at the fortunate chain of events. I recall it was only a week into Medical School and the rose-tinted glasses I had been wearing up till then, shattered. The social and educational structures that I had now promised my life too, were a far cry from where they needed to be. It didn’t take long for me to experience the detrimental impact that came along, leading me to long for change. The desire for change was what ultimately connected me with IFMSA-Pakistan. Initially, I was awestruck by the existence of an organization governed by students conducting activities in such a structured and efficient manner. The deeper I dug, the more I realized it is not just a bunch of medical students doing activities, it is SO MUCH MORE. I knew that the existence of this avenue, that had no previous history in my college, would translate my vision of an

ideal medical education and healthcare system into a reality. And hence I signed up to be the College Coordinator, laying the foundation of my local council that transitioned from a mere one member body to the one sustaining itself over the shoulders of more than 100 members conducting a multitude of activities and trainings in less than 2 months. Knowing I had found my safe haven, I decided to grow in it. My journey up until this point was quite bumpy with multiple ups and downs and realizations that struck along the way. One of those realizations was the status and involvement of medical students in the governance of the healthcare systems locally as well as globally. Even though globally, the involvement of youth is increasing, there is a lag in the outcomes being translated into local actions. I recall one day when I was in class and one of our teachers passed a discriminatory statement highlighting how she won’t hire obese people due to reasons justifiable to her. Upon raising concern, I was shunned making me realize how young individuals who, despite being the future of the system, are deprived of support when sharing their perspective and the dire need for youth to support and empower themselves and each other. Identifying myself as a stakeholder, I decided to utilize every opportunity to capacitate and empower myself and contribute to the empowerment of other youth in every sphere.

Over the past three years in IFMSA, I have had multiple opportunities to influence change within as well as outside my NMO in different capacities and learned a lot in that process. I started locally as a LC President and went all the way up to the External Organizations Liaison and VPEA-Assist. My diverse set of experiences broadened my horizons and gave me a lot of insight into leadership, administration, team building, inter-disciplinary collaboration, professional approach, culturally diverse needs of IFMSA members, strategic planning, project analysis, stakeholders mapping, evaluation for impact-based outcomes, etc. It connected me to change-makers globally and made me realize the importance of capacity building and inter-professional collaborations amongst youth for not only meaningful engagement with stakeholders but also cohesive action and translation of change in their communities. It instilled in me qualities like strength, prudence, creativity and innovation, and futuristic thinking, and refined my skills, enabling me to lead, sustain and represent an exponentially growing organization. But most importantly, it opened a window to prospects of learning new things and seeing how various aspects of research, collaborations, and other IFMSA Standing Committees/domains could contribute to the holistic picture of meaningful youth involvement at all levels. After a thorough analysis of local and international healthcare systems, I reached the conclusion that despite all the effort that is put into the formulation of the health policies and it’s implementation on the systems, there are many loopholes that exist, ranging from lack of awareness about global health policy formulation and its variants among youth to diversified representation, influence, and collaborative action. To universalize healthcare and introduce the reforms that we envision, it is crucial to have a solid set of believers and advocates with the right knowledge and the right skills and this is exactly what has driven me towards this opportunity; i.e a chance to unite youth for Global Health Advocacy. I want to help students identify themselves as stakeholders like I did and develop a globalized pproach to understand and deal with issues in the

healthcare system, policies governing it, factors influencing the implementation of these policies and goals these policies intend to score; making students more aware and motivated to contribute by sharing their opinions which in turn would be amplified, modified, and influence the key determinants of future medical education systems and policies. I want to share with them the intricacies of decision making processes at a global level and contribute my part to the preparation and representation of IFMSA with an emphasis on increasing youth involvement,I want to further explore different health systems and policies from the perspectives of youth from different fields to diversify my approach and get an opportunity to reflect on global as well as regional health policies from different lenses, and want to see people, I will help in my capacity, grow, and achieve things that they deemed unachievable, foster a space that nestles innovative ideas and initiatives and maintain the avenue that gives refuge to collective passions and visions that will undoubtedly lead to the strengthening of global healthcare beyond our individual expectations. I have to offer; a vision of developing a world where young leaders work together to advocate for equity in education and healthcare, the desire to continuously push myself to aim higher despite the odds, the energy to work to achieve my vision and goals, and the passion to serve humanity via global health. Like everyone, I have ideas and beliefs that I wish to expand on and grow; like everyone else, I need an avenue to execute those. I believe this opportunity will provide me with a hefty package of skills, knowledge, additional motivation, and energy drive that will enable me to understand the management of existing problems better, plan and advocate for change with more confidence and therefore, allow me to channel energy generated by this interest in the right direction whilst at the same time connecting me with the community that shares this vision to advocate for and lead towards this change.

- MY MISSION IS -

To grow, strengthen and sustain IFMSA’s network with student organizations, promote inter-professional collaboration, advocate for meaningful youth participation and represent the interests of young leaders in the arena of global health; producing impact locally as well as globally.

Plan of Action

"A goal without a plan is just a wish -

Antoine de saint-Exupery

In the past terms, LOSO's work has significantly evolved from forming networks and collaborations to advocating for global issues at external forums while simultaneously directing our members’ efforts to ensure/promote growth and sustainability. My POA is based on focused efforts with productive reverberation of my exercise through consistency and team work. It is an initial plan that is open to modification based on needs and situation, perspective after reception of handover and critical analysis by the team. It includes basic tasks as well as aspects beyond it.
