Since our first Book Fair thirtyfive years ago, we’ve worked tirelessly to realize our vision:

AN INCLUSIVE, ATTENTIVE, SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY OF WRITERS, READERS, AND COLLABORATORS, ACROSS ALL DISCIPLINES AND CULTURES IN SOUTH FLORIDA. A MIAMI CONNECTED TO THE WORLD, AND A WORLD CONNECTED TO MIAMI, THROUGH THE VIBRANT, ACCESSIBLE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS. In this, our 35th year, we embark on an historic campaign for our future. We are reaching out to friends old and new to help cement our foundation and deepen our impact in diverse communities throughout South Florida, the United States, and the world. DEAR MIAMI BOOK FAIR SUPPORTER, When our first Fair launched in 1984, Miami Book Fair (MBF) was but the seed of a daring dream, planted by a small group of individuals, including educators from Miami Dade College, independent booksellers and librarians who sought to establish Miami as a global hub for literature, a place where authors, publishers, and artists from every corner of the globe could convene, meaningfully collaborate, and reach new and diverse reading publics. In the many years that have since transpired, we have worked tirelessly to realize our vision of an inclusive, attentive, sustainable community of writers, readers, and collaborators across all disciplines and cultures in South Florida. Along the way, that now distant dream has become a reality. MBF became the beating heart of literary culture in South Florida, an internationally-respected literary phenomenon that has deepened the life-changing impact Miami Dade College has made on more than two million students, their families and our community. None of this would be possible without careful planning on our part, or the committed support and generous contributions of people like you. That is why last year our staff completed a comprehensive strategic plan, ensuring the Fair’s continued success and ability to serve the community for many more years to come. To help celebrate three and a half incredible decades of MBF, we are launching a 35th Anniversary Campaign for the Future, implementing our newly formed strategic plan. THE GOAL OF THE CAMPAIGN IS TO RAISE $3 MILLION to help strengthen our endowment, increase the Book Fair’s programming and operational capacity, and launch several new and exciting programs, including the following: • THE EMERGING WRITERS NATIONAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM, aimed at increasing equity and representation in the literary sector by supporting new literary voices with the time, space, and intellectual community that facilitates the best writing. • SPEAK UP, a teen and young adult initiative focused on supporting the artistic, personal and professional growth of teenagers in Miami Dade County by offering after-school and weekend creative writing workshops, quarterly open mics, and a youth slam poetry competition program. • 305 GENIUS FACTORY, a multidisciplinary educational program and learning center with a focus on reading and writing to empower under-resourced children and young adults. • WORLD IN TRANSLATION, a series of cultural events and activities designed to expand the audience for works in translation within the U.S. and beyond, expose South Floridians and visitors to an even greater range of international authors than already featured in MBF’s exceptional programming. We are thrilled to launch these new programs, and we look forward to working with you to deepen the Fair’s impact on the community. We are deeply grateful for the community’s long-standing support and commitment to the long-term success of Miami Book Fair. We hope you will join us in supporting this 35th Anniversary Campaign. Together, we can ensure the success and sustainability of your Miami Book Fair for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, President, Miami Dade College, and Founder, Miami Book Fair Mitchell Kaplan, Chairman/Founder, Miami Book Fair Delia Lopez, Director of Operations, Miami Book Fair Lissette Mendez, Director of Programs, Miami Book Fair

1986 MIAMI BOOK FAIR

A CAMPAIGN FOR THE FUTURE OF THE MIAMI BOOK FAIR We are undertaking a 35th anniversary campaign with a goal of $3 Million to support new initiatives that will build upon and strengthen our decades-long commitment to inclusive, accessible, year-round programs that promote reading and support writers throughout South Florida. Our recently-completed strategic plan has identified four key areas requiring investment in the next five years to help ensure the continued success of the Book Fair. These are:

1. 2. 3. 4.

VIBRANT NEW PROGRAMMING TO FULFILL OUR MISSION, WITH A FOCUS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY AND DIVERSE LITERARY VOICES FROM THROUGHOUT SOUTH FLORIDA, THE NATION, AND THE WORLD.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF A BOARD-RESTRICTED INNOVATION FUND TO SUPPORT ADVENTUROUS NEW PROGRAMMING AND OPERATIONAL DEPTH.

THE EXPANSION OF OUR ENDOWMENT TO COVER APPROXIMATELY 5% OF ANNUAL OPERATING COSTS.

THE ADDITION OF EXPERT STAFF IN THE AREAS OF FUNDRAISING, MARKETING, AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT.

Please read on for more details on these four initiatives.

SPEAK UP: YOUTH SPOKEN WORD PROGRAM The Miami Book Fair Youth Spoken Word program will support the artistic, personal and professional growth of teenagers in Miami Dade County by offering after-school and weekend creative writing workshops, quarterly open mics, and a youth slam poetry competition program, in partnership with established youth poetry organizations around the U.S. Taught by expert poets and performers and open to any youth 13 to 19 years old, these workshops will focus on cultivating the performative writing process, from drafting to performance to publishing to slam competitions.

Participating youth will also have a chance to perform their original work, network with other creative youth during quarterly open mics held around Miami-Dade County, and produce an annual anthology of student work. During the second phase of the program, implemented in the second year of programming, experienced slam coaches will train youth to compete in slam poetry championships. This second phase will also include the establishment of a youth advisory board comprised of graduates from the program’s teen workshops and other youth actively involved in the literary community, such as the South Florida Youth Poet Laureate.

It’s one of the few times in Miami where instead of worrying about how we look, we focus on what we think. And what we read. And how to make the world a better place. And then, of course, how we look. — Brad Meltzer, author

Innovative and Impactful New Programming

EMERGING WRITERS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM The Miami Book Fair’s Emerging Writers Fellowship program will support new literary voices who demonstrate exceptional talent and promise by providing time, space, and an intellectual community for writers working on a first book of poetry, fiction, or nonfiction. The goal of the program is to actively support the development of a diverse, contemporary literary canon by providing national visibility and deep-impact support to help launch the literary careers of three fellows per year. Each fellowship will include a monthly stipend of $3,000 paid in twelve equal installments to cover housing, food and incidentals, and airfare costs associated with flying to/from Miami at the start and end of the fellowship. Quality of writing will be the main criterion for the selection of fellows. The Emerging Writer Fellowships are designed to provide uninterrupted time to write, mentorship with feedback, professional experience, and strong literary community support in Miami, Florida.

To maximize the impact of the program’s fellows on Miami’s literary and artistic communities, the Emerging Writers Fellowships are exclusively residential. All fellows will be expected to live in the Miami area and to participate in the life of the Miami writing community during the fellowship period by teaching one community creative writing workshop per semester through the Miami Book Fair, and helping to determine the scholarship recipients for the Miami Writers Institute during their stay. Additional opportunities for personal/professional development and community service will include visits to local schools to give presentations and readings that inspire and empower local students, collaboration with other arts organizations in South Florida, as well as the chance to attend one community creative writing workshop per semester, one Miami Writers Institute course, and a manuscript consultation with an expert editor, free of charge.

WORLD IN TRANSLATION The Miami Book Fair’s World in Translation program is a series of cultural events and activities designed to expand the audience for works in translation within the U.S. and beyond, expose South Floridians and visitors to an even greater range of international authors than already featured in MBF’s exceptional programming, and catalyze new translations and other forms of intercultural literary exchange by helping writers and translators, as well as publishers, editors, and other literary professionals, to connect and collaborate. Miami Book Fair already sponsors the Paz Poetry Prize in partnership with the National Poetry Series, which includes the translation and publication of a book of original poems written in Spanish. World in Translation will build upon the success of this existing program, featuring a series of multilingual readings, and discussions during the annual, week-long Book Fair in November, as well as select special events and activities offered year round.

To ensure the programming is representative, in the longer term, of the global diversity of literary voices, these events and activities will be themed around a different world language and culture each year. Hands-on workshops on translation, such as a literary translation course held during the Fair’s annual Miami Writers Institute, will add a further educational component to the program. A second phase of the program would include a sixmonth mini-fellowship to support the completion of a manuscript-in-progress by an emerging translator. The fellowship will provide time for uninterrupted translation work, including writing and research, mentorship with an established translator working in a relevant genre, the chance to publish the completed manuscript through a partner publishing house, and various other opportunities for career, personal, and artistic development. In their sum total, the cultural events and educational activities of this programmatic series will work to further establish Miami, a city itself in translation, as an international hub for literature in translation, a place where authors working in languages other than English can converge with translation experts and professionals from around the globe and reach new audiences.

305 GENIUS FACTORY The Miami Book Fair’s 305 Genius Factory is a multidisciplinary educational program and learning center that strives to empower under-resourced children and young adults, providing them with the tools and resources needed to overcome gaps in academic achievement, interpersonal effectiveness, and creativity that hinder their personal and professional growth.

2. WORKSHOPS AND ACTIVITIES. After homework is completed, students would be encouraged to read age-appropriate and engaging texts from the full bookcases lining the walls of the Factory headquarters for thirty minutes then dedicate a final hour to creative writing in a workshop atmosphere or oneon-one with a mentor.

Inspired by the work of Dave Eggers’ 826 Valencia in Northern California, and its parent organization, 826 National, the 305 Genius Factory would offer free oneon-one homework assistance and tutoring, regardless of subject, to students from 3rd to 12th grade throughout Miami-Dade County out of a central “mission center,” known as The Genius Factory Headquarters.

3. FIELD TRIPS. Local school groups will be invited to participate in high-energy creative writing and artmaking events during school hours and weekends as part of the Factory’s field trip component.

The program is comprised of four distinct but intimately related components that, combined, will guarantee the program’s success in advancing student learning, and personal and professional growth: 1. AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING, which will offer local students daily access to one-on-one tutoring in all subjects, with a focus on literacy and creative writing skills.

4. CAREER DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIPS: Older students will be mentored by qualified Miami Book Fair staff, as well as the Fair’s sister cultural organizations at MDC, including MDC Live Arts, MDC Museum of Art + Design, and the Miami International Film Festival, to complete resume-building internships in their respective offices. Open at least six days a week, the Factory Headquarters will be housed in an accessible community space near local schools and youth recreation centers.

Initiative 2:

THE MIAMI BOOK FAIR INNOVATION FUND This new fund will function as a restricted cash reserve, enabling our team the operational capacity to continue to serve our community with conviction, and without interruption, no matter what circumstances come our way. The Miami Book Fair has always been fiscally-responsible, consistently running modest surpluses. But, as with many non-profit organizations, we have also struggled to develop adequate cash reserves. This fund will help us accomplish three things: 1. ESTABLISH AN “INSURANCE POLICY” against the loss of any major grant, a downturn in the economy, or a large, unforeseen expense. 2. PROTECT CASH FLOW WITHIN A PREDICTABLY CHALLENGING FINANCIAL CYCLE OF AN ORGANIZATION THAT PRODUCES A LARGE ANNUAL EVENT. Since a major part of our activity each year happens during a short period of time, we often must spend money (for instance on airfares for authors) before we earn money (for instance on membership and event fees that come in during the Fair). 3. EXPAND OUR ABILITY TO TAKE PROGRAMMATIC RISK. While each idea we convert to programming is carefully tested, we believe our role is to lead. This means that we need the capacity to support the introduction of new programming, making adjustments as we go, or expand current programming when the time is right. We have designed this fund to help us achieve the equivalent of four months of operational expenses. It will be a restricted fund, utilized only for the specific purposes laid out above. Every year, we will replenish this fund to 100% of its value for at least one month, ensuring that it remains a viable part of our sustainability for many years to come.

THE MIAMI BOOK FAIR ENDOWMENT At a time when contributed revenues are increasingly difficult to secure, we have identified the need to grow our endowment to guarantee a steady stream of revenue as our programming and service expands. As such, we are seeking to significantly grow our endowment, INCREASING ITS CURRENT POSITION OF APPROXIMATELY $1,000,000 TO $2,500,000.

We anticipate that an endowment of this size will generate an annual distribution of approximately $115,000, which constitutes just over 5% of the Book Fair’s annual expenses.

This is a benchmark we have long sought to achieve and it will play a MEANINGFUL ROLE IN OUR SUSTAINABILITY OVER THE LONG TERM.

In the past 25 years of my knowing and loving Miami Book Fair, I still think that first invitation is outstanding. I was up all night waiting for the article on me in the Miami Herald. I was thrilled to now be a “real” writer invited to the best book fair going. And over the years it is still thrilling to come to Miami and read my poem and see old friends like Mitch or meet new ones as I did last year, like Caroline Kennedy. — Nikki Giovanni, author

Initiative 4:

BUILDING OUR INTERNAL CAPACITY TO SERVE Our strategic plan identified increasing need and interest for Miami Book Fair services amongst the diverse populations of South Florida. Our response to this need is defined in the four programmatic initiatives we have discussed in pages 5-9. Since we are tied to an educational institution, our ability to deliver particularly relies on the expertise, dedication, and capacity of our staff. As in every part of what we do, we do as much as possible with what we have. But, as we aspire to greater service, we must also be candid with ourselves: we have grown to the point where we cannot increase our services without increasing our capacity. We have determined that to meet our goals, we will need to fund three key, new positions: 1. A PROGRAMMING OFFICER WITH EXPERTISE IN THE AREA OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT. While we are proud of what our current programming team has accomplished, our spoken word and Generation Genius educational services will demand additional bandwidth and expertise. 2. These programs will require not just one-time “stimulus” funding to get off the ground, but ONGOING, ANNUAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT. A full-time fundraising expert will help leverage the goodwill and enthusiasm produced by this campaign into ongoing, annual support for an increased level of impact for many years to come. 3. Finally, while our focus is on direct service to our constituencies, we know that part of our job is to ensure that AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE ARE AWARE OF, AND ABLE TO ENGAGE WITH, THE FAIR AND OUR YEAR-ROUND ACTIVITIES. Our strategic plan called for a more aggressive approach to digital dissemination of our content, and an increased effort to engage with communities beyond our current “core audience”, particularly amongst our city’s diverse, non-English speaking populations. We have determined that to do so properly, we need to expand our communications and marketing team. This new addition to our staff will help us tell our story, and engage our communities more fully, than ever before.

BUILDING FROM STRENGTH The four pillars of our campaign represent the next wave of impact and influence for Miami Book Fair. They build on an existing slate of year-round programs that serve tens of thousands of Miamians, South Floridians, and visitors each year. These investments will help catalyze new programming, but also build our capacity to provide a wide range of other services each year, including: READ TO LEARN BOOKS FOR FREE, a program of The Children’s Trust in partnership with Miami Book Fair at Miami Dade College, that delivers approximately 5,000 books per week to more than 65 strategiclly selected bookshelf locations through Miami-Dade County. Books at the 65 locations are free to take and keep. THE BIG READ, an annual nation-wide initiative, powered by the National Endowment for the Arts, dedicated to supporting organizations across the country in developing community programs that encourage reading and the cultural empowerment of diverse audiences and publics. READCARIBBEAN, a series of readings, discussions, writing workshops, and more, highlighting the vibrant and diverse literary culture of the Caribbean, created with the support of the Green Family Foundation. A main component of this program–the Little Haiti Book Festival–features two days of vibrant cultural exchange among writers, booksellers and performers from Haiti and the Haitian diaspora, as well as workshops for writers, handson activities for children, and much more. CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS, non-credit courses offered throughout the year that give aspiring writers the opportunity to receive critique and encouragement from published authors with extensive teaching experience.
