Ten great reasons to study at Oxford & Cherwell Valley College

Achievement

Friendship

We boast some of the best pass rates in the country for our workrelated courses. Our great results are due to the close contact we keep with industry. Our courses reflect the latest industry thinking and many of our teachers are industry practitioners.

Our courses attract interesting people from all over Oxfordshire. Studying with us offers you the chance to make new friends as you enhance your skills.

Leadership Choice As Oxfordshire’s premier college of further education, we currently have over ten thousand part-time learners studying at our four campuses in central Oxford, Blackbird Leys, Banbury and Bicester.

We are the leading provider of work-related courses in Oxfordshire, offering courses in most areas of work. We are extremely proud that more than 500 employers trust us to train their staff.

Location We offer part-time courses in more than 200 subjects, so you are bound to find something that will interest you.

Cost Our courses are priced as competitively as possible. Unfortunately, this year we have had to increase the fees for part-time adult learning-for-leisure classes due to Government adult education funding cuts. By contrast, we have lowered the fees of some of our vocational skills courses, and continue to offer some of our ‘skills for life’ courses free of charge. We remain committed to keeping fees as low as possible and we know that our courses continue to offer tremendous value for money.

Facilities Our campuses offer industry-standard facilities which you will enjoy studying in. You can spend some leisure time in our cafés and study time in our learning resource centres. Did you know we also run our own restaurants and hair & beauty salons? Take advantage of the low prices and enjoy first class service.

Flexibility Our timetable is designed to fit in with your life and commitments. Many of our courses are scheduled to run during the day, as well as in the evenings, and a number run on Saturdays.

All of our campuses are easy to find, and we offer evening parking to part-time learners, though as it is limited we recommend you use public transport. Our Oxford city centre and Banbury campuses are within easy walking distance of their historic centres.

Love for learning At OCVC we foster a love for learning. Our talented teaching staff share your passion for learning and will give you the personal support you need to succeed.

Support We will support you every step of the way as a student at OCVC. Our Customer Service team, Welfare team and Careers Advisers are available to help you from the moment you make an enquiry throughout the application process and beyond.

The information in this guide was correct at the time of publication. We introduce, withdraw and amend courses from time to time. Please contact us for up-to-date information. 01865 550550 enquiries@ocvc.ac.uk www.ocvc.ac.uk/ptlearning

Historic Banbury Where History and nostalgia meet: this course starts from the point that Banbury was a 12th Century new town that developed into a typical market town. Present day changes have greatly modified and even removed its unique hallmarks. If we are to make sense of Banbury it is essential to realise that people’s memories are often more significant than the persistence of buildings and activities which have previously moulded the town. This local Banbury History course will be covering important moments in the town’s history and will include the following topics: the cross and the rhyme; in search of Banbury: reactions to the way the town has grown; fond memories of Banbury; and the changing significance of housing and travellers’ tales. Printmaking During this course you will learn about and make prints using a variety of intaglio techniques including collograph, drypoint, etching and aquatint. You will be given step-by-step instruction, demonstration and one-to-one technical guidance to help you acquire fundamental skills and the support to develop your own designs. The notion of drawing is fundamental to making prints. The ability to make realistic drawings from direct observation is not a pre-requisite. Design, texture, and pattern are equally important considerations for making successful prints and are at the heart of the intaglio printmaking process which will be explored throughout the course. Entry requirements: the short course programme is designed for students who wish to update their professional knowledge, extend skills or who are thinking about a career change. You should have a good level of art and design skills and be over 18 years old. Interested students are invited to talk to the course leaders to discuss the level and content of the work required. Sculpture This course offers an introduction to a variety of sculptural techniques. These will include modelling, mould making and casting in addition to working with salvaged materials and found objects creating assemblage. You will be encouraged to use drawing and photography to record your ideas and experiment with styles of working to develop sophisticated and personal fine art statements. A variety of unusual but familiar materials will be made use of in order to make new and exciting sculptural possibilities. This will give you the chance to work in an experimental way and consider how materials and found objects can be constructed into contemporary sculpture and installation. Throughout the course personal research will be encouraged and supported by contextual references. Entry requirements: the short course programme is designed for students who wish to update their professional knowledge, extend skills or who are thinking about a career change. Textiles This course explores the surface decoration of fabric through a variety of printing and dyeing techniques including silkscreen, procion dyes, heat transfer, stitch, weave, shibori, and tie-dye. Beginning with observational drawing you will be introduced to a range of mark making styles and translate these into design ideas by working directly onto a screen using mono screen printing and procion inks. These will be extended through stitch and drawing with the needle to embellish and decorate. You will also be introduced to the technical skills associated with constructed textiles and will explore weaving basic structures using a range of yarns. Practical sessions will be put into context with information about contemporary design and one-to-one guidance, demonstrations and group discussions throughout the course will encourage and support you to develop your own personal response within textiles. Entry requirements: the short course programme is designed for students who wish to update their professional knowledge, extend skills or who are thinking about a career change. Please note that you can enrol on any safety and security course online. If you do so you can save 10% on the course fee. (This may be subject to change).

Certificate in Door Supervision There are 600,000 people employed in the security industry. The demand for security staff is on the increase and this will continue leading up to and beyond the Olympics in 2012. Door supervisors are responsible for people’s safety in premises such as pubs, bars and nightclubs. Their duties include checking the suitability of people as they enter a building, searching people for drugs or weapons, dealing with conflict, restraining and escorting individuals from a venue if necessary, dealing with emergencies and supervising people as they leave premises. From 2006, all security officers have had to be licensed by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). You will require this training in order to apply for this licence. You will study three modules which will include health and safety emergency procedures; recording incidents and crime scheme preservation; equal opportunities; roles and responsibilities of a door supervisor; behavioural standards; legal constraints; arrestable offences; searching drugs; assess and reduce the risk of violence; identify behaviour that indicates an escalation towards violence; and communication post-incident support. This course will include the newly introduced Physical Intervention module, which is a new requirement of the SIA. Entry requirements: there are no formal entry qualifications. OXCTK15DA
