HOW-TO

Warehouse safety netting vs pallet rack backing

Whenever there are two or more products that serve a similar function, we want to know which one’s better. When the two products are both designed to increase safety, we become even more motivated. If you’re looking for a pallet rack safety solution for yourself or your customer’s warehouse, it’s reasonable to want to know A) Which option is the most effective, and B) Which option is the most cost effective. But when it comes to comparing pallet rack safety netting and wire rack backing, there’s a better question to ask: “Which solution is better for this application?” Asking whether safety netting or pallet rack backing is better is similar to asking whether pickup trucks or sedans are better. The answer depends on the individual application and the goals of the owner. For example, in a warehouse whose owners are highly budget-conscious and which is only storing light boxes, a light netting may be the perfect match. A warehouse storing heavy loads might opt for the sturdier, stronger metal backing. For those in the decision-making phase or who just want to learn more about two of the more popular rack safety options, we’ve outlined some of the key differences and similarities below. Warehouse safety netting: Nothing but net Once installed, both safety netting and pallet rack backing make warehouses safer without any effort from workers. This may seem obvious and irrelevant. A lot of equipment is meant to decrease accidents without help from people. But it is important because it means its usage rate will be 100%. Workers will be safer every day without needing to adopt new procedures or equipment. Safety netting applications On to the products themselves. Safety netting has two main uses in a warehouse storage setting: fall protection 10

January 2018

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

for people, and fall protection for products. When used on a pallet rack system, safety netting is typically meant for product fall protection, which doubles as human fall protection for anyone walking underneath a falling object at the wrong moment. Safety netting is attached at the rear side of a pallet rack bay, and can either sit flush against the upright columns or offset, depending on how deep the pallet loads usually extend back. Netting made to snag runaway product may have a tighter mesh pattern than that intended for humans. Safety netting is flexible in that it can often be custom cut by the square foot, and can even be used on elevated conveyor systems to keep product from falling to the warehouse floor. The netting may also be coated in a layer of fire retardant. Safety netting can be used for non-safety related applications, such as hanging dividers. Safety netting isn’t just available in “traditional” netting form. It also comes in the shape of plastic netting. Plastic netting offers an inexpensive way to keep product from straying off beam levels, but its tensile strength is often lower than woven or metal backing. It’s important to consider the pros and cons of plastic netting before installing it. Since plastic netting may not come with an installation kit, the onus is on the installer to use heavy duty ties to secure the netting. Down to the wire: pallet rack wire mesh guarding Pallet rack backing is the stronger, more durable, and usually more expensive counterpart of safety netting. Like safety netting, metal rack backing is commonly used to keep product from cascading onto the floor or unsuspecting people. However, its rigidity and strength also make it useful as an enclosure for valuable equipment or inventory. Manufacturers like BeastWire also provide tamper-resistant hardware to add another layer of security to the enclosure. Advantages of pallet rack backing Because it’s made from high-strength metal, pallet rack safety backing needs little to no maintenance. If rack backing is properly installed, it should be able to do its job for long periods of time without oversight. Because of the strength and durability of wire mesh backing, there’s little need to worry about it being broken through during loading or torn by a heavy item.

Pallet rack backing vs. safety netting for pallet rack safety The decision to install safety netting or pallet rack backing should be based on which product is more appropriate for the situation. In some scenarios, safety netting will be the clear choice. In others, steel will have the upper hand. It all depends on the goals and priorities of the end user, and on the conditions in which it’s going to be used. Even though there are pros and cons to weigh and information to consider, you don’t want to fall victim to paralysis by analysis. First, determine whether or not a pallet rack safety system is right for the application. Then, work with the end user to determine whether safety netting or pallet rack backing would be a better fit. Make an informed choice, and be sure to have the product installed by someone with installation experience. The end result will be a safer work space and an appreciative warehouse crew. Remember to give us a call or email us to learn more this topic and other safety products. Our goal is to help you, so let us know if there’s information you’d like to see featured in our blog, website, or emails! Email wprp at networkeditorial@wcinet.com with questions.

SAFETY CORNER

Protecting visiting pedestrians The definition of pedestrian from the dictionary is “somebody who is traveling on foot, especially in an area also used by vehicles.” Basically, anyone that is not riding on something is considered a pedestrian, so that is pretty simple. As I see it, there are two types of pedestrians: Type 1 - The local pedestrian These are pedestrians that regularly work in an environment around forklifts. In fact, many of them may also be operators at times. These people either know, or should know, about the many dangers of working around equipment weighing in at over 10,000 pounds with relatively low visibility. The basic solution to keep this group safe is educating them on the dangers of forklifts and then enforcing the rules for staying alert and keeping a safe distance from forklifts. That may be over simplifying the solution a bit, but this is not the group I am focusing on for the purpose of this article. Type 2 - The visiting pedestrian This group does not work at your location and they may not be very educated on forklift safety. They may also not be very concerned about any of the dangers your facility might present to them for various reasons. How about the semi-truck drivers that bring loads to your location? Do they ever roam away from their truck and risk getting hit by a forklift? Could a local kid find their way onto your property and injure themselves? Are there areas the general public might visit that expose them to your equipment -delivery people, salespeople, customers? It is important to look around your facility and to identify potential problem areas before bad things happen; after the accident or injury is too late. In the U.S., OSHA has noted several ways you can deal with dangerous situations. You can train people to work around a danger, you can guard around the danger, or you can engineer a solution that removes the danger. Here are some suggestions for reducing the potential of injury to visiting pedestrians. 1) Warn them. Make sure you have warning signs; the more universal symbols, which do not require reading skills, the better. These signs should direct all visitors to the front office, shipping office or other appropriate safe area and should prohibit any unauthorized persons. The signs should also mention the danger of heavy equipment in use. 2) C ontrol them. It is not a problem to allow visitors 14

January 2018

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

to access the front office, but keep the rest of your facility locked up. Side doors, dock doors, back doors, etc. should be secured at all times. Just to clarify, this is to keep people from coming in without permission; doors must not stop a person inside from exiting in an emergency like a fire. If a salesperson walks in the back door and gets struck by a forklift, don’t think just because you didn’t invite him in you can’t be sued for his injury if the door was wide open or unlocked and unmarked. One area of particular concern is the loading dock. If truck drivers can walk right in and all over the place on the docks that is a major safety risk. Consider building a special cage where the truck drivers can enter your building and pick up a phone for help, but not access the entire dock area. We work with several companies that have done this and it has made a big impact on safety in that area. Forklift operators know that unauthorized people will not be walking around and truck drivers have a view of the unloading process and a place to hang out without being exposed to forklift traffic. 3) Equip them. Make sure visiting pedestrians have all the personal protective equipment that your workers in the same area are using. If you require safety glasses in your back lot, but don’t require them of truck drivers making deliveries in the back lot, then you run the risk of exposing them to danger and your company to liability. You may want to require that they wear a bright orange safety vest when anywhere near your forklifts, this makes them easier to pick out from the surroundings and is becoming a more popular trend in many facilities. 4) Stay with them. Don’t leave visitors unattended no matter who they are. Make sure someone from your company is with them from the start to the completion of their visit. This way you can look out for them, make sure they don’t get into the way of your forklifts or other dangerous equipment. If this is not practical, then you will need to train them to the standards of your local pedestrians so they understand and can deal with the potential dangers. Corrugated Pallet Saves Money (and the Environment) Green Ox® corrugated pallets deliver on strength and reliability while providing a solution for companies that want to eliminate inconvenient, hazardous, and expensive-to-use wood pallets. Green Ox pallets can be manufactured and delivered anywhere and can be assembled in-house on an as-needed basis by hand or via a new pallet assembly machine that assembles 200-250 corrugated paper pallets per hour, providing Just In Time (J-I-T) pallet production for end-of-line, real-time pallet availability. Green Ox corrugated pallets are 100 percent recyclable, thereby increasing recycling revenue, removing the hassle of reverse logistics, and decreasing pallet recovery expenses—all while minimizing the environmental footprint. www.greenoxpallets.com

New Magliner ContolPRO™ hydraulic brake truck Magline, Inc. has launched a heavy-duty hydraulic brake truck. With this new design, the lever stroke required to activate braking power is reduced to the strength of a single fingertip. The ControlPRO technology provides unmatched brake activation. With up to three times less muscle exertion required to slow the truck, hand and forearm fatigue is reduced. Stronger, heavy duty wheel brackets increase load capacity up to 600 lbs., and the added feature of an ergonomic kick bar assists with loading, unloading and breaking back loads. www.magliner.com

TVH introduces dual color strobes TVH in the Americas (TVH) introduces the new dual color strobes in the ML2 LED, ML5 LED and ML55 LED series. These strobes come in four different color combinations, amber/ blue, amber/clear, amber/red and blue/red. The dual color option is the perfect solution for being able to alert other workers of the forklift’s action. If the forklift is moving, the strobe will flash one color. When the forklift is stopped and the forks are lifting, the strobe will flash the other color indicating that the forklift is in use and not just parked. www.tvh.com

Looking to maximize your forklift uptime?

Low-profile crane scale fits any hook & only adds 6.5

The forklift industry is calling for a new approach to tires. With forklifts using more specialized attachments, carrying heavier loads and moving faster due to the adoption of stability systems, there is more stress on the tires than ever, resulting in thermal failure and unscheduled forklift downtime. The Solideal PON 775 is the ultimate solution for high intensity applications, delivering 90% better resistance to internal heat build-up, 70% better energy efficiency and 45% longer tire life than Solideal Magnum SM ERP. For Solideal PON 550 and PON 555, they were specifically designed to handle medium intensity applications. www.camso.co

A new, battery operated dual-shackle receptor crane scale that features a hand-held wireless remote indicator and can be used virtually anywhere is being introduced by Alliance Scale, Inc. The Alliance Anyload® Dual-Shackle Dynamometer functions as a low-profile crane scale virtually anywhere by simply attaching it under a hoist and then attaching the load to it using standard shackles. Measuring only 6.5” vertically, it has a 5 ton/10,000 lb. capacity and features a hand-held wireless remote indicator that operates up to 75 meters away. www.alliancescale.com

VPT high speed turning technology Columbia’s new patented Variable Position Turner (VPT) technology maximizes speed & flexibility for inline high speed palletizing. With Columbia’s VPT technology, servos are used to dynamically position the center turners laterally on an in-line palletizer while the layer is being formed. VPT locations are accessed and programmed simply via the HMI. Therefore, new pattern creation and optimizing is extremely user friendly. Fewer turners are required (maximum of only four) and when used in conjunction with Columbia’s adjustable lane position technology, pattern forming capability is virtually limitless.

JW Winco introduces latch-type toggle clamps JW Winco, Inc. announced the introduction of GN 852.3 Steel & Stainless-Steel Latch Type Toggle Clamps, heavy duty type, with safety hook. The latch type toggle clamps, which are RoHS compliant, are compact in design and can be used to ensure high holding capacities. The circular movement of the handle is transformed into the linear action of the latch. In the clamped position, the U-bolt latch with clamping arm is parallel to the plane of the operating handle. When the toggle clamp is clamped, a safety hook positively locks onto the body. www.jwwinco.com

CREAMER'S CORNER

The directional control pedal - heading in the right direction! The sweeper and scrubber is unlike most pieces of industrial equipment. Take the lift truck for a second. One can hop in the seat and drive with relatively little training. It has your conventional configuration. It has your typical gas pedal for forward or reverse movement with the activation of your transmission. And, it has your conventional brake pedal. It has your conventional drivetrain being engine and transmission. Most equipment is designed in this fashion, but not the sweeper and scrubber. One can look at the American Lincoln 7765, Nilfisk-Advance CS700 or the Tennant 8410. They all have the same thing in common: the directional control pedal. In years past, as long ago as in the 1970s, I remember well that most of the sweepers or scrubbers of the day had no brake pedal at all. Nothing!! You simply didn’t need them. At least, at that time it was thought. The Tennant Model 265 sweeper was produced between 1975 and 1985 and thousands were sold. I would tell you that they were even the premier sweeper of its day. It never was produced with a brake pedal. It just didn’t seem a necessity. And I tended to agree with this assessment. As long as you operated the equipment in a manner conducive of the sweeper and scrubber there should be no issue. It is when the operator gets overzealous in his driving. A good example I remember is when a sweeper raced a forklift down the aisle to the finish line. The forklift won and the sweeper wrecked hitting the wall and doing extensive damage. It’s this craziness that forces the manufacturers to install the brake pedal on their equipment. Even today I believe if operated properly the brake pedal isn’t necessary. So let’s talk about how this directional pedal works. It is a very simple concept. #1. Forward movement: Press the top of the directional pedal with the toe of your foot. #2. Reverse: Press the bottom of the directional pedal with the heel of your foot. #3. Neutral: Take your foot off the directional pedal and it will return to the neutral position. Simply put, it will stop. 26

You see this type of equipment doesn’t have a conventional transmission in the sense of the word. It is equipped with a hydrostatic transmission, meaning the transmission is a hydraulic pump. This hydraulic pump is mounted to the rear of the IC engine where the normal transmission would be mounted. On the rear of this hydraulic pump is a pony pump mounted as well. These two pumps control all hydraulics of the machine including the directional control. With everything being said, I want to be clear. I don’t advocate no brake pedal. I just don’t think it is necessary “if ” you control the directional control pedal correctly. And don’t confuse the brake pedal with the parking brake. Even in the early years of this equipment, the sweepers and scrubbers always were equipped with a parking brake. One reason would be in the transportation of said equipment. When put on a rollback truck, always put the parking brake on. And, of course, make sure it is strapped down properly. So now you know everything about the directional control pedal. If you have a question/comment about today’s article, send me an e-mail. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/ scrubber. In an age of technology-driven communication and internet-based learning, Hydra-Slide Ltd. Is taking training back to first principles, offering hands-on instruction on every piece of equipment they design and manufacture. At the forefront of Hydra-Slide’s training program are their Low Profile and Heavy Track skidding systems as well as the Canadian manufacturer’s specialized hydraulic power systems. Hydra-Slide skidding systems have proven to be one of the most cost-effective and safe methods for moving all types of heavy loads. The heartbeat of these skidding systems is the company’s conventional and synchronous hydraulic power units. The Hydra-Pac Synchronous 10,000 psi hydraulic power units provide synchronized control of multiple hydraulic cylinders, suitable for operation of all Hydra-Slide skidding systems, turntables, climbing jacks and most other double-acting jacking applications. Robert Young, director of operations and lead trainer at Hydra-Slide, explained that the Hydra-Pac Synchronous power units are often a focal point of training sessions because of their unique operation, which is different than other unified jacking systems. These units, available in diesel, propane or electric models, offer synchronized control of multiple lifting points, so multiple cylinders can be safely extended or retracted completely in unison even under different loading conditions. He said: “The important point to make to training participants is that they should not try to achieve equal pressures. Each circuit will not necessarily have the same pressure with our systems; an offset center of gravity will result in one side being heavier, thus, will show higher pressures. www.hydra-slide.com

TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Embrace change – For the health of it! Lucy DelSarto, TVH

Your life does not get better by chance, but by change. Change isn’t part of the process; it is the process and this new way of doing something requires adjustment psychologically, physically and emotionally. Success will ultimately be a result of commitment to doing small yet significant things on a regular basis until they become a habit. We create our habits through our daily choices which, in turn, become our lifestyle. It is estimated that 40% of people see the start of the New Year as the time to make resolutions and begin new habits. Only 8% actually keep their New Year resolution, according to research from the University of Scranton. Too often overly ambitious and restrictive goals are the cause of failure. Change is challenging. If there is an area in your life that needs change to enhance your quality of life, empower yourself with positive affirmations and support partners. Take steps to form a realistic sustainable plan of action: 1) Make it simple. Our daily lives are crammed full of to-do lists and activities. Small can be significant when repeated consistently over time. Make sustainable the goal for your new habit. Also, try blending activities when possible. If looking to improve your physical well-being, consider doing some squats or a wall sit while brushing your teeth. Work in family time with walks or healthy meal preparation. 2) Be specific. Rather than saying you’re going to lose weight and start working out at that gym, set a clear ambition and schedule it. For example, I will go to the gym on Tuesday and Thursday to lift weights or I will join a workout class or participate in weekly sports league. Write it down, have an accountability partner and see it through. 3) Reward yourself. Celebrate your progress! Treat yourself to an activity or event for effort you’ve put into taking care of yourself. Remember life is a journey, not a race, so take time to enjoy the journey. It’s not the extent of the change that matters, but rather the act of change. Perhaps you’ve been criticizing yourself for years and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.

At TVH, we provide a variety of opportunities to enhance well-being through the Nudge Program. Interactive weekly wellness classes meet for thirty minutes over 40 weeks and provide insight on how to live the wellness lifestyle with simple, sustainable actions and a positive perspective. We host monthly speakers who discuss topics ranging from acupuncture and stretching to eye health and more. Quarterly walking challenges and other challenges provide fun ways to build employee engagement. Participating in these activities allows employees to earn Nudge Points that can be used toward rewards including Nudge gear and gadgets. Wellness is not a one and done activity. Wellness is a series of activities along with a mindset to make healthy choices. Our TVH Nudge mantra says it all: DCM = Daily Choices Matter!

If you would like to know more about the TVH Nudge Health and Wellness programs, contact Lucy DelSarto, Health & Wellness Coach for TVH Americas, at lucy.delsarto@tvh.com.
