ALT H E A S E AL E Y Founding Member | Belize National Dance Company Outstanding Belizean Woman of African and Indigenous Ancestry: No wait til di uman ded fi tell ahn e do gud Althea Sealey is the 5th Recipient of EmergentCorp’s Outstanding Belizean Woman of African and Indigenous Ancestry Award, a tri-sector award celebrating Belize’s history, women and African ancestry. Begun in 2015 as a part of the UN Decade for people of Black African Ancestry, this award provides an opportunity to research and document the lives and contributions of contemporary women heroes and benefactors. Althea Sealey started her dance career with Bob Reneau at the age of 8 years through young adulthood, continuing with Majorie Bradley and Leonie Henry before taking leadership with her dance company. The style and talent of her first teacher is kept alive in today’s dance company in such dances as the stool and basket dances. Althea Sealey is a BNDC’s founding member of the Belize National Dance Company (BNDC), founded in November 1990, to give space to young dancers who go on to become the next generation of senior talents that ensure the culture of dance engages future generations. Althea acknowledges that sustainability of the dance company, even as it struggled to retain male dancers, has required the strength and perseverance of women to keep it going for the past three decades (http://edition.channel5belize.com/archives/19999).
