be a good steward President’s Climate Commitment Mt. Hood Community College President, Debbie Derr has joined college and university presidents from across the country in a commitment to work toward taking care of our environment. The American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment acknowledges the reality of global warming and potential for large scale, adverse health, social, economic and ecological effects. Each college is committed to working at reducing greenhouse gases, investing in energy efficient strategies and working on recycling efforts that minimize waste production. MHCC has already established a robust recycling effort and made substantial investments in energy saving equipment.

highly efficient

Highly Efficient HVAC Systems have Replaced MHCC’s inefficient 47-Year-Old System.

Energy Savings: Operating the College Responsibly Recent much needed upgrading of MHCC’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system is resulting in an estimated energy savings of over $1 million per year. This will result in over $20 million in savings over the next 20 years. The college has also replaced internal and external lighting with new energy-efficient lighting systems for further cost reductions.

Re-tooling for Current Jobs Machine Tool Technology Gets a Big Boost Thanks to a donation of tens of thousands of dollars in equipment by Blount International, the college’s Machine Tool Technology program is geared up to offer an expanded educational experience. The Machine Tool Technology program prepares students for real jobs in the manufacturing industry. Students learn the processes in making metal tools, parts and accessories for a variety of applications. “MHCC’s program is doing exactly what it should do. It provides students the hands-on experience necessary in understanding the manufacturing process.” - Alex Heredia, ALMAR Tools College + Community • Fall 2014

One of the Largest of its Kind – ALMAR Tools Owner Thanks MHCC for its Success For Alex Heredia, it was his night classes in MHCC’s Machine Tool Technology program that helped him build what is now the largest specialty grinding shop on the West Coast.

“While I was attending Parkrose High School, I was attending the [MHCC] machine shop course at night learning the trade. Out of all the schooling I have received, that was the most important for my career – Monumental!”

be acknowledged Leatherman Tool Group Awarded MHCC’s 2014 Community Partnership Award Born from a desire to design a Boy Scout knife with pliers, Tim Leatherman created one of the most popular multitools a person can have and today the company is known worldwide. But few may be familiar with the role Leatherman has played in partnering with Mt. Hood Community college to build a better workforce. For decades, Leatherman has supported the college’s Industrial Technology program,

hosted special tours for students, hired MHCC graduates, donated tools for the Foundation auction and worked with the college to provide customized training for its employees. It’s Leatherman’s continued partnership and commitment to supporting MHCC students and our community which has earned the company the 2014 Community Partnership Award.

The Community Partnership award is an MHCC tradition which recognizes community organizations that have partnered with MHCC to help students achieve their dreams. Below, founder Tim Leatherman holds one of his popular multitools.
