INTRODUCTION

A small group of friends from culinary school have decided to partner and open their first restaurant. They are interested in creating a restaurant that features a constantly changing menu reflecting the seasonal produce of the D.C. area. Their signature ingredient, grilling cedar wood sheets, needs to be incorporated in the restaurant’s menu and architectural designs.

DESIGN STATEMENT

GOALS

Fotia Grill is inspired by a relaxed evening at the beach next to a camp fire. The design is conceptualized as a spot to meet with friends and family. Sea, sand and fire complement the design inspiration by lending their colors, patterns and textures as pallets to create a cozy dining space that transports diners to their favorite beach retreats.

Create an elegant, comfortable and inviting dining space. Incorporate beach inspired elements that evoke a calmed and relaxing night at the beach. Create a graphic menu from which the interior architecture will draw inspiration.

otia Grill is a full-service, à la carte restaurant and bar nestled in an up and coming development North of the Nationals’ Ballpark Stadium by the Anacostia River in the Navy Yard neighborhood in Washington, D.C. It will occupy a retail space located in a new residential and retail mixed used building featuring modern architectural design. The neighborhood redevelopment consists on a new baseball stadium, over 726 planned new residential units, retail establishments including financial institutions, neighborhood services and local retailers, office space, two 3-star hotels with one 350 keys combined, and a third 204-key 4-star hotel with restaurant. There are also development prospects to build over 1.9 million square feet of new office, hotel, residential and retail space. The area already counts with access to metro and new parking garages and boosts a pedestrian oriented planning. The restaurant will host lunch, happy hour, after game celebrations and dinner services. The clientele will include baseball fanatics, office workers, hotel guests, local dwellers and area visitors. Currently, the area houses about 30 dining venues including fast food, coffee shops, deli and sandwich shops, a hotel restaurant, and à la carte dining. The estimated price for dinner for one with one drink in a la carte establishments in the area can range between $30 and $50-$60. (opentable.com and yelp.com) Properties recently sold and available for sale range from $650,000 to $1,000,000 for town homes, and $350,000 to $700,000 for newer condos. (zillow.com) Based on census data from the 2013 census, The Median household income was $99,436 and the median rent paid was $1,600. The median age ranged between 31 and 38 years old. The average household size in was 2.3 people and 28% of the population holds a Bachelor’s degree and 24% hold a Master’s degree. (city-data.com)
