s I finally scramble out of the surf zone I´m reminded of how impractical it is to paddle a loaded SUP. I´ve had to go back to shore once already to repack my load—shifted by the hammering surf. I wave to Elysia to paddle toward me. At first petrified by the waves, she dug deep and made it out of the surf zone before me. She´s still a bit wide-eyed, but maintains balance and equanimity in the mild noon chop. This is her first SUP expedition, and my second. Our shuttle driver is nowhere to be seen now. We are alone on the open ocean of the “Costalegre”, the southern coast of the state of Jalisco from Barra de Navidad north to the southern tip of Banderas Bay where Puerto Vallarta is located. I sense that this realization is still sinking in for Elysia, as I sense that my loaded board is sinking deeper into the water unless I paddle—which is what we begin pg. 30 to do in earnest.

l luchar por salir de la marea, recordé lo impráctico que es remar tan cargado abordo de una SUP. Ya había tenido que regresar a la orilla una vez con anterioridad para reempacar mi carga que se había desbalanceado por el golpeteo de la marea. Saludo a Elysia, pidiendo que reme hacia mí. Al principio estuvo petrificada por las olas, pero remó profundamente y salió de la zona de la marea antes que yo. Continúa con los ojos de asombro, pero mantiene el balance y la ecuanimidad en el agua templada y picada de mediodía. Esta es su primera expedición de SUP, y la segunda para mí. Nuestro conductor de camión no aparece por ninguna parte. Estamos solos en el océano abierto de la Costa Alegre, en la costa sur del estado de Jalisco, desde Barra de Navidad al norte, hasta la punta sur de la Bahía de Banderas donde está localizado Puerto Vallarta.
