N estled at the northwest end of Tenacatita
Bay the golden brown sand beach that bears the same name is considered by many as a place to go to kick back, eat fresh seafood, lie in the sand and play in the gentle waves. However, the area around Tenacatita beach has plenty to offer the active visitor as well. Here in this pristine natural setting, marvellous venues for snorkelling, scuba diving and mountain biking abound. For many, El Arrecife, the coral reef at Playa Mora – right beside Tenacatita beach – is THE place to snorkel in the Costalegre. With depth ranging from three to 40 feet, you can snorkel for hours exploring this extensive coral reef and observing the many fish and other underwater flora and fauna that live there. Snorkelling is best early in the day before the wind comes up. If you visit the reef by boat you’ll have the pg. 10

Tenacatita la playa de arena dorada que lleva el mismo nombre es considerada por muchos como un sitio para relajarse, comer mariscos frescos, tomar sol y jugar entre las suaves olas del mar. Sin embargo, la zona alrededor de la playa de Tenacatita tiene mucho que ofrecer al visitante que quiere más acción. En este ambiente natural casi virgen abundan sitios para esnorquelear, bucear y pasear en bicicleta de montaña. Para muchos, El Arrecife, como es llamado el arrecife de coral de Playa Mora a un costado de la playa de Tenacatita, es el mejor sitio para esnorquelear en Costalegre. Con profundidades de un metro hasta catorce, se puede esnorquelear durante horas por el extenso arrecife observando la gran variedad de peces y otras especies subacuáticas de fauna y flora que lo habitan. Es mejor esnorquelear temprano antes de que empiecen los vientos. Si visitas el arrecife en lancha tendrás la ventaja de entrar al agua justo arriba del arrecife en caso de que se baje la marea, no tendrás que luchar en contra de ella para pg. 10

Half the fun is getting there. A boat trip is the most scenic way to get there but driving is also an option.
Es tan divertido el viaje como el destino. Un paseo en barco es la ruta más escénica, pero también se llega manejando.
Bike:You could ride the 39 km along highway 200 or ride off-road by mountain bike.
Bicicleta:. Por la carretera 200 son 39 kilómetros o bien puedes salir de la carretera en bicicleta de montaña.
Boat:Tenacatita beach is located at GPS 19°17.02’N 104°52.47’W. For those that don’t have their own boat, charters and scheduled boat trips are available from Barra de Navidad and Blue Bay Village.

Driving:Turn off of highway 200 near the 30 km mark from Melaque, it’s well marked. From there it’s another 9 km to the beach.Vehicle tours and/or taxis are available from Manzanillo, Barra de Navidad, Melaque, La Manzanilla and Blue Bay Village.

By bus: Second class buses bound for Puerto Vallarta from Manzanillo, Barra de Navidad and Melaque will drop off passengers at the Tenacatita junction on highway 200 or at Agua Caliente a bit down the highway where there might be a taxi.There is a local bus from El Rebalsito (3 km from Tenacatita) to Melaque and Barra de Navidad every morning about 7:00 am with a return to El Rebalsito each evening about 5:30 pm.
En Camión: Autobuses de segunda clase en camino hacia Puerto Vallarta desde Manzanillo, Barra de Navidad y Melaque dejarán a los pasajeros en la salida de Tenacatita sobre la carretera 200 o en Agua Caliente, un poco más adelante donde podría haber un taxi. Snorkelling from the beach is also an option but watch the tide and be careful not to enter the water in a place where you’ll need to walk on – and damage – the coral. If your passion runs deep, scuba diving the reef at Playa Mora is a popular site. Looking for a deeper dive? You may want to check out Las Iglesias. This rock formation at the southernmost entrance to Tenacatita Bay rises out of the ocean from a depth of about 75 feet and offers divers a chance to explore small underwater caves and view coral and a variety of fish. Or sample the 80-foot dive at El Novillo – a single pillar of rock pg. 12

Since Tenacatita is known for the beach, many people don’t think of it as a site for biking but the forest, farmlands and shores of the lagoons, and extensive mangrove-filled estuary behind the beach offer shady trails and dirt roads that are perfect for mountain biking. Riding off-road from La Manzanilla – on the southern shore of Tenacatita Bay – to Tenacatita beach you will see wildlife such as crocodiles, mapache, armadillo and the many birds that live in and around the estuary. You’ll also pass fields of corn, tomatoes and chillies as well as mango and coconut palm orchards. Once at the beach you can ride the sandy trail that follows the west river and the beach between Tenacatita and El Tecuan – or simply throw yourself pg. 16

16 pg. 12 into the ocean and enjoy a cool beverage.If you are not feeling too energetic or looking for something to do at the end of an active day a boat tour of La Vena – the slow moving river that winds its way from the lagoon at Tenacatita, through the mangroves and down to the sea – provides the perfect opportunity to relax at a slower pace. Passing from the river to the ocean by boat is dependant on the tide though so don’t get too relaxed, you may need to get out of the boat and walk a few meters along the river shore while your driver takes the boat through the shallows.

Light at the end of the beach...

‘You can barely see past your own nose’; I magínate a phrase rarely intended to be taken literally, but in ‘Campamento Majahuas’, away from the light pollution of towns and beachfront businesses, it really happens, and is the principal reason for the high numbers of nesting sea turtles that still visit playa Majahuas every year. One of the Costalegre’s hidden gems, Majahuas is located behind hectares of banana plantations and an immense stretch of lagoon roughly half way between Melaque and Puerto Vallarta. After a short boat ride, the feeling is one of true isolation and beauty. The real experience however, begins at nightfall. Our first stop is the incubation corral. In nesting season we may find over 2,000 hatchlings in any one night, no easy task in the faint glow of fading lamp light. Carefully walking around the inside perimeter of the corral we locate the nests which are due to hatch and begin to check for activity. Scooping up hundreds of palm- pg. 20

Uno de los tesoros escondidos de la Costalgre es Majahuas, que está ubicada detrás de grandes hectáreas de huertas de bananos y una inmensa laguna a aproximadamente la mitad del camino entre Melaque y Puerto Vallarta. Después de un recorrido rápido en lancha, la sensación de aislamiento y de belleza es realmente profunda. La verdadera experiencia, sin embargo, comienza al caer la noche. Nuestra primera parada es el corral de incubación. 20 pg. 19 sized hatchlings and counting them into containers, we admire their speed, strength, and what seems like pure determination. We head back to camp to leave the hatchlings in their tank, awaiting the backup of hundreds more so they can be released together later in the night. Just a few minutes into the beach patrol we come across our first adult sea turtle, crossing our path on her way up the beach to begin the laborious task of digging a 40 cm hole into the sand. Turning off our headlights immediately, we wait patiently and silently in the mystical glow of the moonlight shining through a slight crack in the clouds. Having given her a twenty minute head start I quietly make my way towards her using the red L.E.D. setting on my head lamp to check if she has begun to lay her eggs. I see the slight raising of the back flippers each time she releases a couple of eggs into her nest, and flash my lamp to the two volunteers accompanying me to come and help. Counting over 100 slimy eggs into a bag to the sound of the pg. 22

Regresamos al campamiento para dejar las crías en su tanque, esperando juntar cientos más para poder soltarlas mas tarde. Después de solamente pocos minutos de haber iniciado nuestra patrulla playera nos encontramos con la primera tortuga marina adulta, cruzando nuestro camino cuesta arriba sobre la playa para comenzar la labor de cavar un hueco de 40 cm en la arena. Apagando los faros de inmediato, esperamos con paciencia y en silencio bajo la mística luz de la luna que se percibe a través de las nubes. Dejo que se adelante veinte minutos y después la sigo tranquilamente utilizando la luz LED roja de mi lámpara de cabeza para ver si ha empezado a poner huevos. Veo el pequeño levantamiento de pg. 22

22 pg. 20 intense groaning from the turtle as she struggles through this 40 – 50 minute process is quite a touching experience; that combined with the unique reaction from every volunteer as they watch in amazement makes this work incredibly rewarding. With a total of 54 nests collected and relocated throughout the night, and only four nests taken by poachers, we wake the next morning with a deep sense of achievement. However, every night is different, and with the impending storms we have some busy nights ahead. Competing with local poachers, natural predators and the ferocious waves from the open sea, the work in Majahuas must continue and lies in the hands of the families of the same people who once profited from the plentiful food source that was the sea turtle.

Con un total de 54 nidos recogidos y reubicados durante la noche y sólo cuatro perdidos debido a cazadores furtivos, nos despertamos al día siguiente con la gran sensación de haber logrado algo significativo. Competir con los cazadores furtivos ilegales, los depredadores naturales y las feroces olas del mar abierto, no es tarea fácil, el trabajo en Majahuas debe continuar y aún más en las manos de la misma gente, cuyos antepasados se beneficiaban del tráfico de la tortuga marina.

n the Sierra de Manantlan Biosphere Reserve just beyond tiny Cuzalapa is an even smaller village called Durazno and beyond that is La Pareja, too small to be a village but the gateway to three waterfalls that tumble down the sierra on their route to the sea. The local people call the two smaller waterfalls La Pareja – the pair or the couple. The larger, about 30 meters in height, is called simply La Cascada – the waterfall. It was to the larger that we hiked on an unusually wet and rainy day. The terrain on the route to La Cascada is varied. Initially we crossed open fields planted with corn, tomatillos, and lime trees then a field where wild grass grows to a height of over 12 feet. The grass is used to feed livestock and as we threaded our way between the giant stands of grass a herd of grazing longhorns silently observed our progress. Our charming young guide from La Pareja, Aldo Giovanni Santana Corona, explained that the cleared fields pg. 26

Después está La Pareja, tan pequeña que casi ni se le puede llamar aldea pero es el portal a las tres cascadas que caen por la sierra rumbo al mar. La gente local llama a las dos cascadas pequeñas La Pareja. La más grande, de casi 30 metros de altura, se llama simplemente La Cascada, y fue ahí hacia donde nos dirigimos ese día lluvioso. Al principio, cruzamos campos abiertos sembrados con maíz, tomatillos y limones, y luego un campo donde el pasto silvestre crece más de 4 metros de altura. Take one of the routes to Cuzalapa. From Santiago through Chandiablo direct on the dirt road or on highway 200 north to highway 80 at Melaque and east on 80 to the paved road to Cuautitlan that is well marked just past La Huerta and La Concha. From Cuzalapa there is only one road up to Durazno and the road to La Pareja is marked with a wooden sign in Durazno.

26 pg. 25 were once part of a large Hacienda where the cash crops were trees logged from the abundant forest along with sown crops such as corn, wheat and rice that they were able to grow successfully by making use of the abundant water here at the foot of the sierra. Of the Hacienda, gone since the revolution, only traces of the main house’s foundation remain, buried in overgrowth. The ex-hacienda land is now divided between different members of the local “communidad indigena”. After the fields we entered a wooded area where the climb up to the waterfall really begins. Initially the slopes are forested with Robles (oaks), but climbing along the trail we moved quickly into an area of Pine with the occasional Encino (live oak). Our local guide Aldo pointed out that the Robles are dying due to root rot, but as the Robles
fall the forest recovers and the Pines are steadily taking over, moving further down the slope each year. Hiking steadily upward following the winding trail through the woods, climbing deeper into the forest, the only noises we heard were the wind whispering through the pines and the multitude of bird calls from the woods as we approached. Fording several small creeks that tumble down the slopes Aldo pointed out that between each stream of water the colour of the soil differs, changing from yellow, to terracotta, to brown to black – as though each stream defines a different territory on the same mountain. After about an hour and a half of hiking steadily upward we reached a larger, faster running small river that coursed through a narrow canyon about 15 meters below us, Aldo explained that we were pg. 28

Subiendo por el camino sinuoso a través del bosque, adentrándonos más y más en él, los únicos sonidos que se escuchaban eran el susurro del viento entre los pinos y los chillidos de la multitud de pájaros del bosque a nuestro paso. Cruzando varios arroyos pequeños que descienden por la cuesta, Aldo nos indicó que entre cada arroyo el color de la tierra varia entre amarillo, terracotta, marron y negro – como si cada arroyo delimitara un territorio diferente sobre la misma montaña. Después de una hora y media de subida constante llegamos a un río más grande y rápido que corría por un cañón estrecho a unos cinco metros debajo de nuestra posición. Aldo explicó que pg. 28

La Cascada is a favourite spot for the local people to swim and picnic at on Sundays so Sunday is not the best day to visit.

Now the climb became more strenuous as we followed the course of the water up the mountain, climbing down into the river bed and out again on several occasions to cross the small river as we made our way upward. We came upon our final destination suddenly it seemed. Hiking the narrow trail along the bottom of the barranca right next to the rushing water both the noise of the river tumbling over the rocks in many small waterfalls and the thick undergrowth muffled the sound of the waterfall we’d come to see. So, it was to my surprise that we rounded a stand of bush and there it was before me, a tall column of sparkling white water plunging spectacularly into the large dark pool of water at its foot. The source of the water was so high above us that I had to crane my neck to see the top where it spilled forth from the sheer rock face. Magnificent, and well worth the hike in to see it.

Era así que me sorprendí cuando, a la vuelta a un arbusto grande, me encontré frente a una enorme columna de agua destellante cayéndose majestuosamente hasta un estanque de agua oscura a su pie. La fuente del agua era tan alta que tenía que esforzarme para ver donde empezaba la caída desde el risco de roca. Era magnífica, y bien valía la pena la larga marcha para llegar a verla.

Aventuras en el Pueblo Mágico de Colima...
Best known for its museums, colonial Mejor conocido por sus museos, su architecture and the mariachi that entertain visitors at the restaurants of Los Portales on the town square, Comala is also working hard to preserve the natural beauty of this fertile region that lies in the shadow of two volcanoes. With its protected areas and natural beauty, Municipal Comala has become a prime destination for ecotourists looking to explore and enjoy the great outdoors. We spent a weekend there with our hosts Jupiter Rivera and Mara Ballesteros, excited for an adventure in the wilderness on Comala’s doorstep. We left Comala on mountain bikes and rode about 9 kilometers along winding cobblestone roads through beautiful countryside to El Remate, the site of a hydroelectric plant that powered the Colima area from1906 until it closed in the 1950s. The two large ponds that provided water to turn the plant’s turbines are still in El Remate but today, supplement income for the village’s senior citizens: people come to fish and pay the seniors for their catch. We walked down a shady switchback path that centuries ago was part of the only route between Colima and Mexico Tenochtitlan, to the old plant on the Armeria river bank some 330 feet below the pg. 54

Salimos de Comala en bicicletas de montaña e hicimos un paseo de casi 9 kilómetros por los sinuosos caminos empedrados a través del hermoso paisaje hacia El Remate, el sitio de la planta hidroeléctrica que suministraba de luz al área de Colima de 1906 hasta su cierre en los años 1950. Los dos estanques grandes que suministraban agua a las turbinas de la planta están ahí todavía, pero hoy en día aumentan los ingresos de los ancianos de la comunidad, ya que la gente va a pescar y también a comprarles pescado. Caminamos por un sendero con sombra, que hace siglos formaba parte de la única ruta entre Colima y México pg. 54

Climbing the winding path back up, we stopped to appreciate the spectacular cliffs on the other side of the Armeria River before riding the 8 kilometer cobblestone road to

Ahí encontramos las viejas turbinas que todavía ocupan su lugar dentro del sólido edificio de piedra que albergaba la planta, aunque el techo y las casas de los trabajadores que alguna vez ocupaban el lugar ya no existen. Montándonos por el sinuoso camino de regreso, nos detuvimos a apreciar los espectaculares riscos por el otro lado del Río Armería antes de tomar el camino de pedrada de 8 km hacia el pueblo de Cofradía de Suchitlán. Mientras paseábamos, admirábamos el magnífico Volcán de Fuego que percibíamos en la distancia, y visitamos un hermoso campo de azucenas antes de montarnos de nuevo y dirigirnos hacia el casi desierto pueblo de La Yerbabuena cerca del pie del volcán. De ahí seguimos otro camino hasta un punto más allá del pueblo donde pudimos ver el Volcán de Fuego, a sólo 5 kilómetros de distancia, y escuchamos pg. 56

The next morning we visited the recently dedicated Los Senderos de Higuera Ecoparque in Nogueras. The park comprises a two hectare section of a 167 hectare natural forest that is protected by Presidential decree. The Ecoparque enables visitors to wander groomed paths amongst the naturally occurring flora such as vanilla, papaya and banana plants, coffee and cocoa bushes, coconut palms, mango, lime, mame, pistachio, guanábana, orange, chocohuite, higuera and other trees. Leaving the Ecoparque we drove up to Suchitlán and visited the home-studio of Senior Gorgonio Candelario Castro, a 3rd generation traditional mask maker. The hand carved, beautifully crafted, colorful wooden Suchitlan masks are used in traditional dances to this day and Senior Candelario, as the mask maker, is a keeper of pg. 58

El parque consiste en dos hectáreas de un bosque natural de 167 hectáreas que está protegido por decreto presidencial. El Ecoparque permite que los visitantes puedan caminar por caminos tendidos entre la flora natural como vainilla, papaya y banana, arbustos de café y cacao, palmeras coqueras, mangos, limones, mamey, pistacho, guanábana, naranja, chocohuite, e higuera entre otros. Visiting the mask maker... The home-studio of Senior Gorgonio Candelario Castro the mask maker is located on the corner of Lirio and Jazmín Streets in Suchitlán. He welcomes visitors and while he makes masks to order, he also sometimes has traditional wooden masks available for sale.

this art form. From there, we rode through Suchitlán, past a small waterfall and across a small river to access an old cobblestone road that was built to move sugar cane from the fields to the refinery that was once operational at the ex-hacienda Nogueras. Taking a turn onto a dirt track between high stands of cane we reached a trail that runs down to the bottom of the Suchitlán ravine through thick forest dotted with beautiful wild flowers, where another suspension bridge crosses that river. Following the trail back up the steep incline from the river we again mounted the bikes and rode downhill all the way – about 11 kilometers – to Nogueras where we visited the extensive botanical gardens, turtle ponds and butterfly garden at the exhacienda Nogueras. Had we stayed another day we could have climbed El Nevado, the inactive volcano, but we decided to call it a truly excellent eco-weekend, head for home, and save that adventure for another visit.

tlán, por una pequeña cascada y a través de un pequeño río para llegar a un viejo camino empedrado que fue construido para transportar caña de azúcar de los campos a la refinería que operó alguna vez en la ex-hacienda Nogueras. Nos salimos por un camino de tierra entre la caña para llegar a un sendero que llega hasta el fondo del barranco de Suchitlán a través de un denso bosque salpicado con hermosas flores salvajes donde otro puente suspendido cruza ese río. Siguiendo el camino cuesta arriba del río nos montamos de nuevo en las bicicletas y seguimos cuesta abajo los 11 kilómetros hasta Nogueras donde visitamos los extensos jardines botánicos, estanques de tortugas y el jardín de mariposas en la exhacienda. Si nos hubiéramos quedado otro día, hubiéramos podido escalar El Nevado, el volcán inactivo, pero decidimos terminar ahí nuestro excelente fin de semana de ecoturismo y regresar a casa, guardando esa aventura para otro día.
