THE WORLD’S ONLY S EA TURTLE INCUBATION GREENHOUSE IN TODOS S ANTOS By Jen Keehn, Todos Santos

Volunteer season has begun at Tortugueros Las Playas in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur. On Saturday, September 28th, volunteers from around Todos Santos will begin construction on the world’s only Sea Turtle Incubation Greenhouse. Founded and designed by Marine Biologist, Elizabeth Gonzales Payan, the greenhouse provides the perfect temperatures for sea turtle incubation. Without the greenhouse, Leatherback Sea Turtles in the area fail to incubate or end up turning out very few hatchlings. Baja Good Life Club

Temperatures are closely monitored in the greenhouse that allow for the best possible conditions for the turtles to incubate. With a mission to “protect, conserve, and replenish the fragile marine eco-systems in Baja California”, Tortugueros Las Playas strives to give back to our environment by focusing on the endangered sea turtle population, as well as habitat recovery and environmental education. Releasing hatchlings every day from midNovember through the end of January, and 3-6 hatchlings every 4

week from February through November, they are definitely holding true to their mission. Tortugueros Las Playas also provides a variety of educational opportunities, directly giving back to the community ofTodos Santos. They offer a junior lifeguards program where people between the ages of 8-18 learn basic water safety, injury protection, basic lifeguard training, first-aid, and an opportunity to camp on the beach one night to rescue sea turtle nests. They also offer a junior marine biologist program and a marine biologist for a day program. The learn to swim program allows the children ofTodos Santos the opportunity to learn to swim, as well as learn other aquatic skills they would never get the chance to. For more information on volunteering or making a donation, please email: tortugueroslasplayitas@gmail.com or call (612) 1450353

NEW 20-PESO COMMEMORATIVE COIN GOES INTO CIRCULATION IN MEXICO

A new 20-peso coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Army will enter into circulation, the central bank (Banco de México) announced. The new coin will join the MX$ 20 coins dedicated to Octavio Paz currently circulating. The coin is composed of two sections: an inner central portion and an outer portion circling the inner portion. The central part of the coin will be 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel. The outer portion of the coin will be 92 percent

copper, 6 percent aluminum and 2 percent nickel. The coin commemorates the 100th anniversary of the modern Mexican Army. As we all know, the Mexican Army was forged during the illfated days that followed the “Decena Trágica” and the assassination of the President of the Republic Francisco I. Madero and the Vicepresident José María Pino Suárez,” said Banco de México Governor Augustín Carstens in the commemoration ceremony last week. [Editor´s note: The the “Decena

Trágica” was the period from February 9 through February 18, 1913, in which those against President Francisco Madero rose up in arms to overthrow his government.] “Before the usurpation of the government on the part of Victoriano Huerta, the Plan of Guadalupe was promulgated on March 26, 1913, in which the Constitutional Army was established, headed by Venustiano Carranza,” Carstens said. “For that reason, this year we celebrate the first centennial of the Mexican Army.”

These figures show that the neighboring country is the main market of the tourism industry in Mexico . After U.S., UK tourists were the most preferred to visit Mexico . B ILLIONAIRE CARLOS S LIM HAS BOUGHT THE LORETO B AY RESORT Mexico tourism officials have confirmed that billionaire Carlos Slim, one of the richest men in the world, has bought the Loreto Bay Resort, the struggling project on the Sea of Cortez. Details of the transaction were not disclosed, but State Secretary ofTourism Ruben Lugo Reachi told reporters that Mr. Slim's company, Grupo Carso, would have the "necessary resources" to jump start the project. The seller was Mexican home builder Homex, which has been going through its own struggles recently. The company posted a 10.1 billion peso ($796 million) loss for the second quarter, as sales slumped and the government switched subsidies from rural to urban areas. Loreto Bay, which debuted in 2004, is an ambitious attempt to create a master-planned develop-

ment targeting international buyers in a remote area of Baja California, north of La Paz. The Trust for Sustainable Development (TSD), working with Mexico's tourism agency Fonatur, planned to build a $3 billion residential resort with 6,000 homes, golf courses and hotels on 8,000 acres. The development was billed as a model for sustainable projects, with the residential areas designed around new urbanism principles, with an emphasis on dense neighborhoods with walkable areas, organic farms and a large portion of the land set aside for a nature preserve. The project attracted an investment from Citibank and international media attention. But in 2009 developer TSD Loreto informed owners that all operating and construction activities for Loreto Bay would be suspended "due to the 7

challenging situation in the international real estate and financial markets." "Several potential buyers and investors have visited the project over the last few months, yet in the context of the current economic crisis and credit shortage, the project has been unable to secure a buyer or new investor," the developer said. Homex bought the project in 2010, including the hotel and land. But the market has been slow to recover and Homex confronted its own cash problems. Mr. Slim is reportedly a frequent visitor to Loreto Bay, where he is known to park his yacht. His company is buying the Loreto Bay Golf Resort and Spa, undeveloped lots, and designated land marked for future development, according to media reports. (World Property Channel) www.BGLClub.com

Martin Romo: A Man on a Mission to Keep

San Felipe Beautiful

For years, Baja remained virtually untouched. Blanketed by the deep blues of the Pacific Ocean and the glassy waters of the Gulf of California, this expansive desert region was a mystery. Those that were fortunate enough to experience its beauty were treated to untouched beaches and a desert that told sun-beaten secrets. Baja today is a different story. Development, which started slowly along pristine beaches, is in fullforce. Growth now spreads up both coasts of the peninsula like an unrelenting weed. With growth comes trash. And a lot of it. To those that aren’t aware of the trash quandaries that litter the land, ignorance will remain bliss. It is what they don’t see in the towns everywhere that are beginning to expand that is the real problem. As towns become cities and villages become towns, trash accumulates with increased frequency.

by Jen Keehn

Locals are aware of these problems. It is unfortunate that not many know what to do, or care to do anything at all. This is part of life in Baja. Thankfully, not every local feels this way. In San Felipe, a beautiful town on the Sea of Cortez 125 miles south of the United States Border, lives a man who is doing what he can to fix these problems. This once small fishing village, has grown in recent years with an influx of both tourism and full and parttime foreign residents, in addition to being a favorite weekend getaway for larger Mexican cities such as Mexicali. With more people comes more trash, and Martin Romo is doing what he can to help. Originally from San Ignacio, Martin moved to San Felipe in 1988. It was then, while studying Cobach [Baja California College], that he became involved with other students doing city clean up. What started almost twenty years ago has turned into a passion to preserve this part of Baja’s burgeoning peninsula. We had a chance to talk to Martin about his efforts and drive to keep Baja beautiful. How long have you lived in San Felipe?

I have been living in San Felipe for twenty-five years. Can you tell me about your family in San Felipe?

Almost all of my family lives here in San Felipe. My mother and two brothers, Rigberto and Luis both live here. My wife, Angela and I have three children that all live here. Our children, Angela, Martin Jr, and Jesus Martin all study school here. The two older children are at the junior high and the youngest studies at Jaime Nuno Elementary. My family has run Rosita Restaurant for twenty-five years. My brother Rigberto is the general manager, and I have helped him in many different areas of the restaurant for a long time. 9

What are some of the things you do in the community?

For over ten years I have been doing various works in the community. I support a lot in the public schools, and have been working very hard in most of them. I have installed irrigation systems, planted new trees, paved sidewalks, and paint buildings. I have my own program to keep our local beaches clean. I have received a lot of support from the American and Canadian full and part part-time community. Their generous donations of tools like rakes, shovels, and plastic bags have really helped to keep the beaches clean. At San Felipe United, we give assistance to people in need. Our annual clothing drive receives support f r

om a lot ofAmericans and Canadians as well. The State Water Company has provided me with machinery and labor. With their great help and assistance, I have been able to plant over forty palm trees in San Felipe. I am also a member of the AOKNICK.ORF foundation. The main goal here is to build classrooms to teach English in different kindergartens around town. We also did this in Ojos Negros, a small community close to Ensenada. Why do you work in the community?

I like to work in our city because there are many things to be done. Sometimes our authorities cannot see everything that needs to be done, or cannot go any further with what needs to happen. How do you pay for the tools and supplies that are needed? The tools have all been given to me. I have taken on a big responsibility and shown great results. Many people have supported me through the years with donations, and I have also received tools from the Las Vegas Full Circle Events. What is the most important part of the community work to you?

I consider many things I do important, but consider the beaches one of the most important. This is the first thing visitors encounter. Baja Good Life Club

I would love to see the people of San Felipe learn to respect each other. I want to see the people join together for a good cause. I want people to stop littering. Is trash and littering a big problem in San Felipe?

This is one of the biggest problems here. I don’t think it is only here, though. I believe it is nationwide, and there has been little improvement. The public beaches need the most help.

Do you think there is enough education about littering for the Mexican youth?

No. There is nothing like that here. New generations must learn from their families and respect that. It is the parent’s obligation to teach their children how to behave in society.

How many people help with the work you do, and do you need more?

God is my main source of help. There are volunteers who will help when I ask through Facebook. I wish I could get more people to help, but no one seems to care.

Martin Romo is doing what he can to make a difference in Baja, in San Felipe, in his community. He is a real Baja hero and we are proud to have had an opportunity to get to know him just a little bit better.

How do you try to get people to help you?

When I need help I just ask them on Facebook. I have had help twice in the past from the Baja State Government, and they supplied me with many tools like rakes, shovels, plastic bags, and wheelbarrows. I have never had any help from the Municipal Government, although they do take the trash I collect from the beach. At the least I would like to see them repair or rebuild most of the old streets in town.

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson If you would like to help Martin, or support his efforts in some other manner, please contact him through his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/martin.romoc/

What do you wish you could get the people of San Felipe to do?

B EING ABLE TO IDENTIFY A S TROKE CAN S AVE LIVES RECOGNIZING A STROKE Thank goodness for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Stroke is an emergency and a brain attack, cutting off vital blood flow and oxygen to the brain. In the United States, stroke is the fourth leading cause of death, killing over 1 33, 000 people each year, and a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability. Approximately 795, 000 strokes will occur this year, one occurring every 40 seconds, and taking a life approximately every four minutes. Stroke can happen to anyone at any time, regardless of race, sex or age. Recognizing symptoms and acting FAST to get medical attention can save a life and limit disabilities.

Stroke has a new indicator! Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue: During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) Baja Good Life Club

She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this. A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. 24

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S - Ask the individual to SMILE. T - Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently i.e. Chicken Soup) R - Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. New Sign of a Stroke: Stick Out Your Tongue Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

The benefits of limes are multiple, and they prove particularly efficient in some of the most common health issues people face today. Limes improve the functioning of the liver by stimulating the production of enzymes, and they help digestion. Beverages based on lime can alleviate constipation, peptic ulcer, respiratory disorders, heartburn, gout, gum problems, and urinary disorders. Limes are frequently used in eye care, skin care, and weight loss. Limes contain potassium, calcium, and magnesium, but its most abundant element is the vitamin C. Over the centuries, limes have been used to fix vitamin-C deficiency which can cause serious health issues if untreated. Lack of Baja Good Life Club

vitamin-C may lead to frequent infections, cracked lips and lip corners, bleeding gums, lesions in the mouth, and even scurvy in its severe forms. All these can be avoided with the help of limes. In the world, there are two varieties of lime: Persian limes and Mexican limes. The Mexican limes are also called Key limes, bartender’s lime, limon verde or thorny lemon. They are small, about two inches in diameter, and oval with a skin that goes from dark green to yellowish as it ripens. The preferred time to use the lime is while green. They are characterized by a strong fragrance, acidic taste, and a tart, bitter flavor. The key lime was originally cul26

tivated in Southeast Asia, but it spread in various other parts of the world, including Mexico. Today, Mexico produces limes for both local consumption and exportation to United States. Key limes can be stored for about 2 weeks at temperatures of 40-45°F. If frozen, limes can resist for up to 3 months. A quick way to take advantage from the health benefits of this fruit is by drinking lime water. A half of lime has to be squeezed in a glass of warm water, preferably without using sweeteners, though honey is a safe option. Drink the glass of lime water in the morning, a half an hour before having breakfast. Lime juices are readily available at the supermarket, but it is always

better to prepare it at home yourself. Ingestion of lime seeds should be limited because they can be toxic if consumed in large quantities. Many recipes in international cuisine use limes as an ingredient. One of them is the Mexican Lime Jerky – a dish based on jalapeno peppers, beer, soy sauce, and beef. Another is the quick to prepare, but tasty Cilantro Lime Rice. Its preparation takes around 10-15 minutes, and you will need some long grained rice, cilantro, two limes, and some butter. The cilantro can be served next to vegan frijoles refritos (refried beans). The most famous and popular recipe using limes will always be the margarita. Here is all you need to know in order to make the best margarita possible:

B AJA B REWING COMPANY, THE FIRST B REWERY IN CABO S AN LUCAS, B RINGS ITS FLAGSHIP ALE TO THE U.S. Baja Brewing Company, the first brewery in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, is proud to announce that Cabotella (“cabo-tayya”), its flagship ale, is widely available in four states in the American Southwest. Since its founding in 2007, the Baja Brewing Company has been pushing the boundaries of Mexican beer. Cabotella is the result of six years of testing and refining recipes. Jordan Gardenhire, Baja Brewing Company’s brewmaster, drew upon feedback from customers at the brewery’s three brewpubs in the Cabo San Lucas area to create this authentic Mexican ale that unites premium ale flavor with the thirst-quenching appeal of an authentic cerveza. Crafted in small batches using 100-percent malted, premium tworow barley, Cabotella is made from all-natural ingredients – no preservatives or additives. The result is a golden, medium-bodied, 5.5 percent alcohol-by-volume blonde ale. “Cabotella brings the best of both worlds together for people who love Mexican beer. We’ve created a new kind of taste experience – one that’s full of flavor 30

while being easy to drink and refreshing,” said Jordan Gardenhire, brewmaster and co-founder, Baja Brewing Company. “We’re excited to share this authentic Cabo experience with Mexican beer-drinkers in the Southwest.” Baja Brewing Company combines the attention to detail that goes into Colorado craft beer with the spirit of Cabo – a place of dualities where the desert meets the ocean and adventurous days blend into festive nights – to create Cabotella. Cabotella is now widely available in restaurants, bars, and liquor stores throughout Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas with plans for further expansion in the Southwest. Distribution is handled by Southern Wine & Spirits in Arizona and New Mexico, Baroness in Colorado, and both L&F and Intwine Distributors in Texas. About Baja Brewing Company Founded in 2007 by Jordan Gardenhire, Charlie Gardenhire and Rob Kelly, the Baja Brewing Company is the first brewery in Baja California Sur. From the start,

the company’s mission was to bring a craft brewing culture to Mexico similar to that in Colorado, where Jordan, Baja Brewing Company’s brewmaster, first began brewing beer while in college at the University of Colorado, Boulder. With three brewpubs in Cabo San Lucas featuring eight beers on tap, including seasonal beers, the

Baja Brewing Company produced 2,400 barrels in 2012. Focusing on all-natural and local ingredients, the brewery distributes throughout Cabo San Lucas and Mexico City, supplying local restaurants, bars and liquor stores. In 2012, Baja Brewing Company entered the U.S. market with the introduction of its flagship Mexican ale, Cabotella, in Texas.
