MENSAJE DEL EMBAJADOR AMBASSADOR'S MESSAGE

Quisiera desear, primero que nada, a todas aquellas personas que lean este boletín un magnífico 2023.

La incertidumbre que por muchos motivos permea entre las economías del mundo no es ajena a México, Finlandia y Estonia. Como democracias afines y economías abiertas que son nuestros países, seguramente enfrentaremos ese reto con trabajo, optimismo y con el ánimo positivo de cooperación económica, política, en lo bilateral y en lo multilateral, que caracterizan nuestras relaciones

Además de presentar en este boletín algunas de las actividades de nuestro quehacer en Finlandia y Estonia en el último trimestre del 2022, quisiera aprovechar este espacio para comunicar que mi gestión como Embajador de México ante Finlandia y Estonia llega a su fin El Embajador Enrique Rojo asumirá esta honrosa posición muy pronto

Por ello quisiera agradecer la cooperación y atenciones de gobiernos, empresas y particulares de Finlandia y Estonia que han venido acompañando mi gestión durante los últimos cinco años Agradezco también a la comunidad de residentes de México en Finlandia y Estonia Hice mi mejor esfuerzo de representar dignamente a México, así como para hacer de la embajada un ente de servicio para todas y todos ustedes

Los buenos recuerdos, amigos y satisfacciones en este país perdurarán por siempre en la memoria de Rafael, mi compañero de vida, y en la mía propia.

Mexico, Finland, and Estonia are not exempt of the uncertainty that affects the world economies As likeminded democracies and open economies, our countries will surely face that challenge with work, optimism and with the positive economic, political, bilateral, and multilateral cooperation that characterize our relations

In addition to presenting in this newsletter some of the activities of our work in Finland and Estonia in the last quarter of 2022, I would like to share hereby that my term as Ambassador of Mexico to Finland and Estonia is coming to an end Ambassador Enrique Rojo will assume this honorable position very soon

For this reason, I would like to thank governments, companies and individuals from Finland and Estonia for our common cooperative work in the last five years I also thank the community of Mexican citizens residing in Finland and Estonia I did my best to represent our country in a dignified manner, and to make of the Embassy a worthy and efficient service entity to you all

The good memories, friendships, and satisfactions in this country will remain forever in the memory and heart of Rafael, my life partner, and my own

DÍA DE MUERTOS 2022 EN EL CENTRO CULTURAL “ANNANTALO”

DAY OF THE DEAD 2022 AT THE “ANNANTALO” CULTURAL CENTER

HELSINKI, October 27th – November 6th. The embassy installed a “Day of the Dead” altar in the Annantalo cultural center in downtown Helsinki, in collaboration with the association of artisans of the “La Ciudadela” crafts market in Mexico City. The inauguration of the altar was attended by members of the Mexican community and the diplomatic corps in Finland.

HELSINKI, 27 de octubre - 6 de noviembre. La embajada instaló un altar de “Dia de Muertos” en el centro cultural Annantalo ubicado en el centro de Helsinki, en colaboración con la asociación de artesanos del mercado de artesanías “La Ciudadela” de la Ciudad de México. A la inauguración del altar acudieron miembros de la comunidad mexicana y del cuerpo diplomático acreditado en Finlandia.

La exhibición del altar contó con la curaduría in situ del Sr. Jaime Morett, integrante de la asociación de artesanos de “La Ciudadela”. El altar fue dedicado a los artesanos del mercado que fallecieron por la pandemia del COVID-19, al escritor chileno Luis Sepúlveda y a la Sra. Tuula Salminen, maestra de arte por 30 años en Annantalo. El altar contó con los elementos tradicionales de una ofrenda, a la cual se integraron 9 alebrijes del renombrado artesano mexicano David Moctezuma.

En el marco de la exhibición del altar, la embajada colaboró con la organización sin fines de lucro Ninho, la organización dancística latinoamericana Askeltempalo y la municipalidad de Helsinki, en la organización de diversas actividades para niños en Annantalo el 29 de octubre. Los visitantes pudieron participar en la decoración de calaveritas, disfrutar de bailes tradicionales mexicanos y escuchar cuentos y leyendas infantiles alusivas a la celebración del Día de Muertos.

En los días subsecuentes, personal de la embajada brindó visitas guiadas a grupos escolares, que incluyeron a cerca de 100 niños. El altar fue visitado por más de 3 mil personas en los 9 días que estuvo abierto al público La embajada publicó en redes sociales un video de la creación del altar y la inauguración en sus redes sociales

The exhibition of the altar was curated in situ by Mr. Jaime Morett, a member of the association of artisans of “La Ciudadela.” The altar was dedicated to the artisans of the market who died due to the COVID-19 pandemic, to the Chilean writer Luis Sepúlveda, and to Mrs. Tuula Salminen, an art teacher for 30 years in Annantalo. The altar displayed the traditional elements of an “ofrenda”, plus 9 “alebrijes” (brightly colored Mexican folk-art sculptures of fantastical or mythical creatures) created by the renowned Mexican artisan David Moctezuma were integrated

As part of the altar display, the embassy collaborated with the non-profit organization Ninho, the Latin American dance organization Askeltempalo, and the City of Helsinki to organize various activities for children in Annantalo on October 29th Visitors were able to participate in the decoration of “calaveritas”, enjoy traditional Mexican dances, and listen to children’s stories and legends alluding to the celebration of the Day of the Dead

In the subsequent days, the embassy staff gave guided tours to school groups with around 100 children The altar was visited by more than 3,000 people in the 9 days it was open to the public A video of the altar’s creation and inauguration was posted on our social media

TALLER DE MANUALIDADES NAVIDEÑAS CHRISTMAS CRAFTS WORKSHOP

HELSINKI, 17 de diciembre. La embajada colaboró con el colectivo artístico Máxico y la ciudad de Helsinki para la realización de un taller de manualidades de artesanías mexicanas navideñas en el centro cultural Annantalo ubicado en el centro de Helsinki.

El taller estuvo dirigido principalmente a niños provenientes de familias binacionales con el objetivo de que conocieran las tradiciones decembrinas mexicanas, al tiempo que elaboraban flores de Nochebuena hechas en papel y decoraban esferas navideñas con motivos mexicanos para llevarse a sus hogares.

Durante el taller se mostraron imágenes sobre la historia de la flor de Nochebuena y la elaboración de esferas navideñas en México. A la actividad acudieron niños acompañados de sus padres, quienes también quebraron una “piñata”, otra tradición mexicana.

HELSINKI, December 17th. The embassy collaborated with the artist collective Máxico and the City of Helsinki to hold a Mexican Christmas crafts workshop at the Annantalo cultural center in downtown Helsinki.

The workshop was aimed at children from binational families to introduce them to the Christmas Mexican traditions, while making paper “Nochebuena” flowers and decorating Christmas spheres with Mexican motifs to take home

During the workshop, images were shown about the history of the “Nochebuena” flower and the making of Christmas spheres in Mexico The activity was attended by children accompanied by their parents, who participated in the breaking of a “piñata”, another Mexican tradition

SEMANA GLOBAL DE MÉXICO 2022

HELSINKI, 31 de octubre - 7 de noviembre. En el marco de la edición 2022 de la “Semana Global de México”, iniciativa del Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME) que promueve y conjunta diversos eventos a nivel global organizados por las comunidades mexicanas en el exterior, la embajada colaboró con miembros de la comunidad mexicana residente en Finlandia y Estonia para la instalación de altares por el “Día de Muertos”

Entre el 31 de octubre y el 3 de noviembre, el Centro de Lenguas de la Universidad de Helsinki expuso un altar con materiales, elementos y textos proporcionados por la embajada El Embajador Ernesto Céspedes dirigió una breve reseña sobre la tradición mexicana del Día de Muertos, los elementos del altar y su significado.

La embajada colaboró también con la Guardería y Jardín de Niños Mi Casita, especializada en la enseñanza del idioma español, para la instalación de un altar alusivo al Dia de Muertos, el cual fue presentado en el marco de su programa infantil “Día de Muertos con nosotros” el 2 de noviembre

Adicionalmente, la biblioteca pública Sello de la ciudad de Espoo y el centro de artes Müstika Studio en Tallin, Estonia, presentaron altares de Día de Muertos con diversos elementos decorativos y descriptivos proporcionados por la embajada.

GLOBAL WEEK OF MEXICO 2022

HELSINKI, October 27th – November 6th. As part of the 2022 edition of the “Global Week Mexico”, an initiative of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) that promotes and brings together global events organized by Mexican communities abroad, the embassy supported members of the Mexican community residing in Finland and Estonia for the installation of “Day of the Dead” altars

Between October 31st and November 3rd, the University of Helsinki Language Center exhibited an altar with materials, elements and texts provided by the embassy Ambassador Ernesto Céspedes gave a brief review on the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead, the elements of the altar and its meaning

The embassy also collaborated with the Mi Casita Nursery and Kindergarten, specialized in teaching the Spanish language, to install an altar alluding to the Day of the Dead, which was presented as part of its children’s program “Day of the Dead with us” on November 2nd

Additionally, the public library Sello of the city of Espoo and the Müstika Studio arts center in Tallinn, Estonia, presented Day of the Dead altars with various decorative and descriptive elements provided by the embassy

DÍA INTERNACIONAL DE LA ELIMINACIÓN DE LA VIOLENCIA CONTRA LAS MUJERES Y NIÑAS

HELSINKI, 25 de noviembre Con motivo del “Día Internacional de la Eliminación de la Violencia contra las Mujeres y Niñas”, el cual se conmemora el día 25 de noviembre de cada año y marca el comienzo de la campaña internacional “16 Días de activismo contra la violencia de género”, la embajada publicó en sus redes sociales infografías sobre este importante tema (en español, finés e inglés), incluida una infografía en colaboración con ONU Mujeres Finlandia Adicionalmente, el equipo de la embajada se sumó a la campaña de activismo de ONU Mujeres vistiendo de color naranja el 25 de noviembre, el cual se usa para representar un futuro mejor libre de violencia contra las mujeres y las niñas.

On the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls”, which is commemorated on November 25th of each year and marks the beginning of the international campaign “16 Days of activism against gender violence”, the embassy published infographics on this important topic on its social media (in Spanish, Finnish, and English), including an infographic in collaboration with UN Women Finland Additionally, the embassy staff took park in the UN Women’s activism campaign by wearing orange on November 25th, color which is used to represent a better future free of violence against women and girls

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS

MÉXICO EN LA CUMBRE DE BALI DEL G20

BALI, INDONESIA, 15-16 de noviembre. México participó durante 2022 en varias reuniones relativas a su pertenencia al G20, que agrupa a las economías más significativas del planeta. La presidencia rotativa del grupo correspondió a Indonesia en 2022 y fue en Bali que tuvo lugar la reunión cumbre de ese periodo. México estuvo representado por el Canciller, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, por la Sherpa de México en el G20, Subsecretaria y Embajadora Emérita Carmen Moreno Toscano y la sous-Sherpa, Ministra Jennifer Feller. A pesar de la polarización en el grupo por la invasión de Rusia (parte del G20) a Ucrania que impidió consensos temáticos, México y otras economías emergentes tuvieron un papel destacado en las negociaciones entre Sherpas, de manera que se pudiera adoptar por consenso la Declaración de Líderes del G20 Bali (enlace) y, de alguna manera, que se preservara el propio G20 como un importante foro de diálogo y cooperación internacional

BALI, INDONESIA, November 15th-16th. HELSINKI, 6 de diciembre. Finlandia celebró en 2022 el 105 aniversario de su Independencia. El Embajador Céspedes participó en la recepción ofrecida por el Presidente de la República de Finlandia, Sauli Niinistö (video disponible en Yle Areena), la cual volvió a ser presencial luego de haberse suspendido en 2020 y 2021 por la pandemia de COVID-19.

HELSINKI, December 6th In 2019, Finland celebrated 105 years of Independence Ambassador Ernesto Céspedes took part in the reception hosted by President of the Republic of Finland, Sauli Niinistö (video available on Yle Areena), which was once again in person after being suspended in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

EL GOBIERNO DE YUCATÁN COMPARTE SU EXPERIENCIA EN LA IMPLEMETNACIÓN DE LOS OBJETIVOS DE DESARROLLO SOSTENIBLE

HELSINKI, 3-4 de octubre. El Sr. Jorge Luis Avilés Lizama, Director de Planeación y Seguimiento de la Secretaría Técnica de Planeación del Gobierno del Estado de Yucatán, visitó Helsinki para participar en un evento sobre la implementación de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) de la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible de las Naciones Unidas. THE GOVERNMENT OF YUCATAN SHARES ITS EXPERIENCE IN IMPLEMENTING THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

TALLER VIRTUAL SOBRE GESTIÓN DE PLÁSTICOS DE LA ALIANZA DEL PACÍFICO

HELSINKI, 7 de noviembre. En el marco de la presidencia pro tempore de México de la Alianza del Pacífico en 2022 mecanismo de integración regional que conforman Chile, Colombia, México y Perú se llevó a cabo un taller virtual en materia de manejo sostenible de plásticos entre el Ministerio del Medio Ambiente de Finlandia y el Grupo Técnico de Medio Ambiente y Crecimiento Verde de la Alianza del Pacífico. El taller fue celebrado por iniciativa de las embajadas de los países miembros de la Alianza del Pacífico en Finlandia.

El taller fue concebido como un primer acercamiento entre ambas partes para un intercambio general de experiencias y explorar posibilidades de mayor cooperación en el futuro. En sus palabras de conclusión del taller, el Embajador Ernesto Céspedes destacó la afinidad entre Finlandia y los países de la Alianza del Pacífico para encontrar áreas comunes que les permitan alcanzar acuerdos concretos en materia ambiental, específicamente en lo que se refiere a economía circular y manejo sostenible de plásticos

VIRTUAL WORKSHOP ON PLASTIC MANAGEMENT OF THE PACIFIC ALLIANCE

HELSINKI, November 7th. As part of Mexico’s pro tempore presidency of the Pacific Alliance in 2022 a regional integration scheme formed by Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru the Ministry of the Environment of Finland and the Technical Group for the Environment and Green Growth of the Pacific Alliance held a virtual workshop on the sustainable management of plastics The workshop was held at the initiative of the embassies of the member countries of the Pacific Alliance in Finland

The workshop was conceived as a first rapprochement between both parties for a general exchange of experiences and to explore possibilities for greater cooperation in the future In his concluding words of the workshop, Ambassador Ernesto Céspedes highlighted the affinity between Finland and the countries of the Pacific Alliance to find common areas that allow them to reach concrete agreements on environmental matters, specifically regarding circular economy and sustainable management of plastics

PROMOCIÓN DE INVERSIONES EN MÉXICO INVESTMENT PROMOTION IN

HELSINKI, 15 de noviembre La Cámara de Comercio de Finlandia (FINNCHAM) publicó en su página web un artículo firmado por el Embajador Ernesto Céspedes sobre las oportunidades que ofrece México como destino de inversión para las empresas finlandesas

En particular, el artículo hace referencia a la estrategia “Rumbo a una política industrial” presentada por la Secretaría de Economía en septiembre de 2022 para alinear los esfuerzos de los diferentes actores económicos, públicos y privados hacia un modelo económico en México que genere un crecimiento incluyente mediante la actualización tecnológica, el incremento del contenido nacional y el desarrollo del capital humano.

El artículo destaca asimismo el “Atlas Prospectivo Territorial-Industrial de México” presentado en 2021 por la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores, elaborado en conjunto con el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para los Asentamientos Humanos (ONU-Hábitat) y la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo Industrial (ONUDI). El documento identifica cinco sectores estratégicos en donde México puede incrementar su participación de mercado, valor agregado y capacidad de generación de empleo, específicamente: energía eólica; farmacéutica; sector aeroespacial; agroindustria; y productos petroquímicos y sus aplicaciones.

Ambas estrategias son parte de las herramientas que el Gobierno de México ha desarrollado para facilitar y estandarizar la información que las empresas globales necesitan saber para invertir en México.

HELSINKI, November 15th The Finnish Chamber of Commerce (FINNCHAM) published on its website an article signed by Ambassador Ernesto Céspedes about the opportunities that Mexico offers as an investment destination for Finnish companies

The article refers to the strategy “Towards an industrial policy” presented by the Ministry of Economy of Mexico in September 2022 to align the efforts of the different economic, public, and private actors towards an economic model in Mexico that generates inclusive growth through technological updating, the increase of national content and the development of human capital.

The article also highlights the “Prospective Territorial-Industrial Atlas of Mexico” presented in 2021 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, prepared in partnership with the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) and the United Nations Organization for Industrial Development (UNIDO). The document identifies five strategic sectors where Mexico can increase its market share, added value and job creation capacity, specifically: wind energy; pharmaceuticals; aerospace sector; agro-industry; petrochemical products and their applications

Both strategies are part of the tools that the Government of Mexico has developed to facilitate and standardize the information that global companies need to know to invest in Mexico
