carta al editor MexArt es una revista digital semestral dedicada a la investigación, difusión y desarrollo de las artesanías mexicanas, impulsamos el contenido cultural, el valor de la mano de obra y la cultura que permite la creación de composiciones artesanales magnificentes. Nos preocupamos por dignificar el trabajo de los artesanos, personas que escenifican la cultura, creencias e historia de un pueblo.

MexArt propone revalorizar la transcendencia e importancia de los legados culturales de representaciones sencillas y cotidianas de determinados pueblos mexicanos. Dirigida a todos aquellos interesados en la historia de México, la tierra del mezcal, el ombligo de la luna. Para público hispanohablante y angloparlante.

La opinión de nuestros lectores es importante. Los invitamos a valorar nuestro trabajo y a intercambiar ideas, o enviarnos sugerencias a través de nuestros datos de contacto, para mejorar nuestra revista día a día.

Origen de la artesanía Su origen se remota a 1654, gracias un pescador Seri de la comunidad de Desemboque, localizada en el municipio de Caborca, llamado José Astorga Encinas. La técnica fue transmitida por sus antepasados a través de un viaje místico que mantuvo a su cuerpo en un estado inmóvil por varios días. Al regresar, Jośe contó a su pueblo lo que vio en su viaje y transmitió su conocimiento adquirido de cómo trabajar con la madera de palo fierro.

One of the most recognized handicrafts of the state of Sonora are the elaborate works of artisans and natives with the palo fierro. This custom arises by the indigenous Seris and Yaquis located in the desert of Sonora; However, its distribution covers the peninsula of Baja California and the southwest of the United States.

The work with palo fierro is one of the most notorious cultural manifestations of these indigenous tribes and the inspiration for its elaboration is obtained from environments as much desert as of marine fauna.

Among his pieces are works such as cactus, saguaros, animals such as roadrunners, owl, eagles, snakes, hares, turtles, seals, sea lions, sailfish, dolphins, sharks, whales, among many other things.

It could be said that the Seris and the Yaquis embodied everything that nature showed them in a world which they were proud of.

Una de las artesanías mas reconocidas del estado de Sonora son los elaborados trabajos de artesanos e indígenas con el palo fierro. Esta costumbre surge por los indígenas Seris y Yaquis ubicados en el desierto de Sonora; no obstante, su distribución abarca la península de Baja California y el suroeste de los Estados Unidos.

El trabajo en palo fierro es una de las manifestaciones culturales más notorias de estas tribus indígenas y la inspiración para su elaboración es obtenida de entornos tanto desérticos como de fauna marina.

Dentro de sus piezas se encuentran trabajos como cactus, saguaros, animales como el correcaminos, tecolote, águilas, serpientes, liebres, tortugas, focas, lobos marinos, pez vela, delfines, tiburones, ballenas, entre muchas cosas más. Se podría decir que los Seris y los Yaquis plasmaban todo lo que la naturaleza les mostraba en un mundo del cual se sentían orgullosos.

En el inicio de la década de los noventa, fue tanto el mal uso como explotación para leña y carbón, que el gobierno tuvo que vedar el árbol de palo fierro, para que no se lo acabaran y sólo quedó permitido su uso para la artesanía. Hay quienes opinan que este oficio se industrializó tanto que perdió su vena artística, pero en algunas plazas aún se pueden encontrar varias piezas singulares y hermosas.

Nowadays, craftsmen use more industrial tools and polishers, which generates a big difference in the price due to the detailed that can be the pieces, thanks to the hands of the Seris. The elaboration of these crafts is of great importance for the Seris, since through their sale they obtain the majority of their income and the prestige they have.

The wood is very similar to the one of the ebony, cause it is very hard and possesses a glassy consistency. Up to now it is considered the palo fierro as one of the hardest woods. Its strand is straight and has no betas or pores, so it protects the tree of the the humidity, and unlike most of the woods that float, this one sinks in the water.

The traditional Seri art of palo fierro is very present when visiting Santa Ana in Sonora, there are several workshops such as the one of Don Manuel Vargas, recognized artisan of the locality.

Para todo esto ellos utilizan limas, lijas, escofinas escarlopas y grasa frotándola con un lienzo.

Las primeras figuras talladas en la antigüedad se hicieron de una forma más natural. Se tallaban con piedras puntiagudas, piedra pomes y el acabado se daba con grasa de caguama. Hoy en día, los artesanos utilizan herramientas y pulidoras más industriales, lo cual genera una clara diferencia en el precio debido a lo detallado de las piezas. La elaboración de estas artesanías es de gran importancia para los Seris, ya que por medio de su venta obtienen la mayoría de sus ingresos y el prestigio que tienen.

La madera es muy parecida a la del ébano, ya que es muy dura y posee una consistencia vidriosa.

Hasta ahora se considera el palo fierro como una de las maderas más duras. Su hebra es rectilínea y no tiene betas ni poros, causando que no le entre la humedad, y a diferencia de la mayoría de las maderas que flotan, ésta se hunde en el agua.

El arte Seri tradicional de palo fierro se encuentra muy presente al visitar Santa Ana en Sonora, ahí se localizan varios talleres como el de Don Manuel Vargas, reconocido artesano de la localidad.

La palabra Sarape proviene del náhuatl Sarape que significa manta era cubrir, un término muy general aplicable a otras prendas, pero ciertas características diferencian al sarape de otras mantas.

De orígenes prehispánicos, el sarape en la antigüedad fue usado como una prenda que daba estatus social, y aunque su uso sigue vigente en algunas partes del país, ha perdido esa connotación y ahora sólo suele considerarse como un artículo artesanal.

Concebido como una prenda netamente masculina, esta vestimenta rectangular tiene una reminiscencia precolombina, cuyo antecedente se remonta a las grandes tilmas, vestimenta que portaban los gobernantes. Con la llegada de los españoles y la introducción a América de nuevos materiales como la lana y el telar de pedales, el sarape fue usado por personajes como chinacos, charros y hacendados.

Los tlaxcaltecas se inspiraron en los colores que emanaban del diamante que reflejaba los colores del arcoiris al pasar la luz a través de el, el diamante es una piedra preciosa de un alto valor, es distintivo, por eso al centro del sarape se coloca una forma de diamante, para que la persona que lo portaba se viera como que traía sus medallones que otorgaba el Virrey a quienes les encomendaba ciertas obligaciones, esto brindaba ciertos status y renombre.

El sarape es uno de los elementos más representativos del México independiente, convirtiéndose en un verdadero emblema nacional, similar al rebozo femenino. Sin embargo, su surgimiento entre 17501860 constituye hasta nuestros días una gran incógnita, se desconocen los lugares, fechas y circunstancias precisos en los cuales fueron tejidos por primera vez, estos textiles considerado de los más refinados del mundo. Su huella fue tan amplia, que encontramos sarapes y tejidos que reflejan la influencia de los “saltillo” desde Totonicapán, Guatemala, hasta la región Río Grande de los hispano- americanos de Nuevo México y los indios navajo de la misma región.

The word comes from the Nahuatl Serape which means blanket or cover, a very general definition applicable to other garments, but certain features distinguish the serape blankets from others.

Prehispanic origins, the serape in ancient times was used as a garment that gave social status, and although its use continues in some parts of the country has lost this connotation and now only often considered a handicraft item.

It is one of the most representative elements of the independent Mexico, becoming a true national emblem, similar to the female shawl. However, its rise between 1750-1860 is to this day a mystery, places, dates and precise circumstances in which tissues were first unknown, these textiles considered the finest in the world. Its footprint was so extensive, we found blankets and fabrics that reflect the influence of the “saltillo” from Totonicapan, Guatemala, to the Rio Grande region of Hispanic-Americans of New Mexico and the Navajo Indians of the region.

Saltillo serape’s recognition was given to the late seventeenth century and early eighteenth century, when Saltillo became the economic center of the northeastern region and because the northern climate was warmer, the weavers were asked to make serapes with thinner threads which soon were marketed in the United States.

It was very common that people in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, when they came to Saltillo’s fair, asked for Serape of Saltillo, everything that came from the south they called it Saltillo. This serapes were made with wool which made it more expensive in comparison with those made with cotton, ixle or a combination of the both. Wool yarn being very thin allows to design more delicate and beautiful figures were made, so it had more detailed motifs with brighter colors than the rest made in the country, which made it the buyers’ preference.

In its long history, the serape has fascinated to those who observe it, becoming a desired object by visitors and a sublime gift of Mexican rulers. The harmony of the Saltillo’s serape, sensitivity and expertise in spinning, weaving, design and color that gave them life, became the legacy and the lasting testimony of the Anonymous weavers of México, whose secret, we hope someday will be discovered.

Tiene un patrón de diseño tripartita que consta de un elemento central dominante -un diamante o un medallón- que abarca el área entre la espalda y el pecho, y tiene también un marco de 5 a 10 cm alrededor del tejido en colores y diseños afines al motivo central y un fondo contrastante con pequeños diseños repetidos.

Llegó a ser la prenda masculina por excelencia, brindando abrigo y un alto estatus a quienes lo usaban. Al tratarse de un tejido demasiado denso también era impermeable y algunos sarapes fueron diseñados con abertura al centro para colocarse como jorongos en temporada de lluvias.

El reconocimiento al separe de Saltillo se dio a finales del siglo XVII y principios del siglo XVIII, cuando Saltillo se convirtió en el centro económico de la región noreste y debido a que el clima del norte era más cálido, se pidió que los tejedores hicieran sarapes con hilos más delgados, que pronto fueron comercializado en Estados Unidos.

Era muy común que la gente de Arizona, Nuevo Mexico y Texas, cuando venían a la feria de saltillo, pidieran que llevaran Sarape de Saltillo, todo lo que llegaba aquí del sur del país ellos lo llamaban de Saltillo. Estos sarapes eran hechos con lana más cara, en comparación del que se hacia con algodón, con ixle o una combinación de las dos. El hilo de lana al ser más delgado. permite que al momento de realizar el tejido se hicieran figuras más delicadas y hermosas, por lo que tenia diseños mas detallados con colores mas brillantes que los del resto del país, lo que lo hacían de la preferencia de los compradores.

En su larga historia el sarape a fascinados a quienes lo observan, convirtiéndose en un objeto codiciado por los visitantes y en un excelso obsequio de los gobernantes mexicanos. La armonía de los “sarapes de Saltillo”, la sensibilidad y la maestría en el hilado, tejido, diseño y color que les dieron vida, se convirtieron en legado y testimonio duradero de los tejedores anónimos de nuestro país, cuyo secreto esperamos algún día poder descubrir.

emblema de identidad amenazada La Cuera Tamaulipeca es el traje típico que representa al estado, esta prenda es originaria de Ciudad Tula, Tamaulipas. Está elaborada a partir de piel de becerro o gamuza de venado, con grabados en piel de color blanco y flores; los adornos incluyen flecos largos en mangas, espalda, frente y orilla de la cuera. En ocaciones tiene el escudo del estado en la espalda.

Pero, ¿cómo fue que surge la idea de realizar una vestimenta con largos flecos partir de piel de becerro o gamuza? La cuera proviene de un traje llamado cotón, vestimenta surgida en tiempos de la Colonia Española utilizada por los vaqueros para protegerse de las ramas y espinas del campo, el clima seco y frío de Tula favorecía el uso cotidiano de este tipo de prendas.

De cotón a identidad tamaulipeca

El diseño de la primera cuera fue realizado por Don Rosalío Reyna Reyes el siglo pasado por iniciativa del general agrarista Alberto Carrera Torres, quien pidió una chamarra norteña con muchas barbas y adornos a partir del cotón vaquero.

Cuera Tamaulipeca is the costume that represents the state, this garment is originally from Ciudad Tula, Tamaulipas. Don Rosalío obedeció a las demandas del General Carrera, agregó muchos flequillos, tanto en la pechera como en la espalda y a la altura de las bolsas de la parte baja, le dibujó flores y plantas del desierto sobre prácticamente todo el traje. El resultado le encantó al General, quién fue el primero en lucir una cuera y popularizarla.

En los años veinte, el general fue fusilado por los carrancistas en Ciudad Victoria antes del fin de esa década. El modelo de la cuera se extendió entonces a todo Tamaulipas, Nuevo León y Veracruz. También fue bien

El precio de una cuera es de cinco mil pesos en promedio, según su tamaño, y el acabado que se pida, hecha a la medida; se trata de una prenda de lujo de difícil confección por el tratamiento que la piel exige. A pesar de tu prestigio, de ser la representación de la identidad cultural del estado de Tamaulipas y haber preservado por años su tradición de elaboración, desafortunadamente como sucede con la mayoría de las artesanías, se está extinguiendo su proceso artesanal, los viejos sastres han ido muriendo y los jóvenes han perdido el interés en aprender el arte de hacer cueras, faldas o camisas. Don Ramón Mendoza Maldonado, es uno de los últimos sastres de cueras en Tula, Tamaulipas.

Catrina, from Goddess of Death to Festivity Symbol Capula es un hermoso poblado que se encuentra al oeste de Morelia, Michoacán. Un lugar colorido y lleno de tradiciones.

Todo el año sus calles visten de glamurosas esculturas huesudas, saludando a sus visitantes, y son mejor conocidas como las Catrinas. Pero ¿qué esta más allá del fondo visible del origen de la catrina? ¿Cómo es que surge este elemento tan representativo de la cultura mexicana?

Capula is a beautiful town located on the west of Morelia, Michoacan.

A colorful place full of traditions.

Throughout the year, the streets shows glamorous boney sculptures, greeting the visitors, best known as the Catrinas. But what is beyond the visible origin of the Catrina? How this element got to be so representative in the Mexican culture?

Historia Ancestral

The roots of Catrina date from the pre-hispanic era, Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl were The aztec god and goddess of death, darkness and Mictlan “the region of the dead” (also called Popocatzin in Nahuatl), which was the place where the men and women who died of natural causes were to rest. It’s temple was in the ceremonial center of the ancient city of Tenochtitlan.

Before the spirits reach Mictlan to rest, they must cross obstacles like colliding rocks, deserts, hills and a crocodile called Xochitonal, sharp obsidian wind, and a rushing river that the spirit can crossed with the help of a dog that was sacrificed the day of his funeral (Xoloizcuintl, known as xoloitzcuintle, a hairless aztec dog).

Las raíces de la catrina datan de la época prehispánica, Mictlantecuhtli y Mictecacihuatl eran el dios y la diosa mexica de la muerte, la oscuridad y el Mictlán “la región de los muertos” (también llamado Popocatzin en nahuatl), era el sitio donde los hombres y mujeres que morían de causas naturales iban a descansar.

Su templo se encontraba en el centro ceremonial de la antigua ciudad de Tenochtitlán. Antes de que los espíritus llegaran a Mictlán para descansar, debían atravesar obstáculos como piedras que chocan entre sí, desiertos, colinas, y un cocodrilo llamado Xochitonal, viento de filosas piedras de obsidiana, y un caudaloso río que el muerto atravesaba con la ayuda de un perro que era sacrificado el día de su funeral (Xoloizcuintl o xoloitzcuintle, que significa perro azteca sin pelo).

Según esta mitología, era tradición entregar a los dueños del inframundo ofrendas, para facilitar a los difuntos la entrada a la región de los muertos. Algo de estas creencias prehispánicas aún sigue latente en la cultura popular mexicana, naciendo así el 1 de noviembre o Día de Muertos, fecha donde se festeja el día los antepasados difuntos, apegándose a la idea de que a los muertos no hay que recordarlos con tristeza, si no con alegría como ellos vivieron.

According to this mythology, offerings were delivered to gods of the underworld to ease the entry to the region of the dead. Some of these pre-hispanic beliefs are still in popular Mexican culture, giving birth to the November 1st or Day of the Dead, the date in which the deceased ancestors are celebrated, holding the idea that the dead must be remember with the joy how they lived, not with the sadness of their lost.

Evolución de la muerte

This ideology of celebrating death, is taken up by the Mexican artist Jose Guadalupe Posada, a famous writer, cartoonist and illustrator, however, he decide to add a metaphorical meaning of the high social Mexican class, adding a satirical touch to his representations. In his illustrations it was often showed the social criticism that revealed situations of inequality and injustice in the country and Porfirian society, represented in his engravings with skulls dressed in luxury, skulls in parties in suburbs or streets, in wealthy houses, he noted the misery and political mistakes of the country.

These “calacas” (Spanish word for skull or skeleton) made him famous. Posadas originally called chickpear (garbancera) calaber, word used to call the indigenous people who stopped selling beans and sell chickpea, pretending to be Europeans, whether Spanish or French society and reneged on his own race, heritage and culture. In this way, Catrina becomes a way of criticizing the last century women who dressed in the French fashion, and Mexicans who wanted to look like having an European lifestyle that did not belong to them.

Esta ideología de festejar la muerte, es retomado por el artista mexicano José Guadalupe Posada, célebre grabador, caricaturista e ilustrador, sin embargo, el decide agregar un significado metafórico de la clase social alta Mexicana, agregar un toque satírico a sus representaciones.

En sus ilustraciones solían estar presentas las críticas sociales que evidenciaban situaciones de desigualdad e injusticia en el país y en la sociedad porfiriana, representados en sus grabados con calaveras vestidas de gala, calaveras en fiesta de barrios, en calles urbanas, en las casas de los ricos, señalaba la miseria y los errores políticos del país.

Estas “calacas” le hicieron famoso.

Posadas las llamó originalmente calavera garbancera, palabra con la que se conocía entonces a las personas indígenas que dejaron de vender frijol y para vender garbanzo, pretendiendo ser europeos, ya fueran españoles o franceses y renegaban de su propia raza, herencia y cultura.

De esto modo, la catrina pasa a ser una forma de critica a las mujeres del siglo antepasado que se vestían a la moda francesa, y a los mexicanos del pueblo que querían aparentar un estilo de vida europeo que no les correspondía.

Evolution of dead

En el siglo XIX el nombre catrina también hacia alusión a la alta sociedad afrancesada de aquella época. De ahí que a las personas bien vestidas hoy se les conoce como catrines o catrinas.

In the nineteenth century the name “Catrín” o “Catrina” also alluded to the high Frenchified society at that time.Therefore, well dressed or elegant people today are known as dandies (catrín) or catrinas.

En el 2010, la catrina celebró su primer siglo. Se realizó un cortometraje como homenaje a José Guadalupe Posadas y a Quirini Mendoza Cortés (creador de Cielito Lindo, canción utilizada en el cortometraje), fue finalista en el festival de cine en Xochimilco.

A short film was made as a tribute to José Guadalupe Posadas and Mendoza Quirini Cortés (creator of Cielito Lindo, song used in the film), the shortfilm was a finalist at the film festival in Xochimilco.

Diego Rivera fue quién le dio el nombre de Catrina, la hizo de cuerpo completo, le agregó clase, sofisticación, porte, vestidos rimbombantes y un sin fin de múltiples accesorios. Rivera la dibujo por primera vez en su mural “Sueño de una tarde dominical en la Alameda Central” en esta obra se puede ver a la catrina acompañada de su creador José Guadalupe Posada, y desde ese entonces fue aceptada y tomada como un ícono de la cultura mexicana.

La Catrina es una metáfora viva que habla de la muerte, es un juego de picardía muy respetable, que te invita a la sonrisa, una sátira seductora, una símbolo de coquetería, que nos acerca humorísticamente a la muerte en una manera de ver la mas alegre, mas cercana, mas divertida y nos recuerda el placer de vivir.

Este muy querido personaje, ya es parte del patrimonio cultural mexicano, donde se representa tanto lo espiritual como lo ancestral. La zona de Michoacán, principalmente Capula, es un espejo vivo donde se miran estas majestuosas catrinas coquetas en diferentes tamaños, colores, y vestuarios, siendo cada una única.

Diego Rivera was who gave her the name Catrina, made her full body representation, added her class, sophistication, and bombastic dresses and multiple accessories.

Rivera drew her for the first time in his mural “Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park” in this work, Catrina can be seen accompanied by its creator Jose Guadalupe Posada, and since then was accepted and taken as an icon of Mexican culture.

La Catrina is a living metaphor that speaks of death, it is a mixtures of respect and slyness that invites you to smile, a seductive satire, a symbol of coquetry, which brings us humorously to death to see it in a more cheerful, closer, and funnier way and reminds us of the pleasure of living.

This loved Mexican character is part of it’s cultural heritage, where both the spiritual and ancestral customs are shown. Michoacan state, mainly Capula town, is a living mirror where these majestic coquettish catrinas look in different sizes, colors and clothes, each one unique.

Capula’s Carnival

“La feria de la Catrina de Capula”, es un evento muy esperado por los habitantes de este poblado, las pintorescas calles se llenan de colores con la exposición y venta de las míticas catrinas que realizan los hábiles artesanos de la zona. Podrás observar el espectáculo de artesanos trabajando a marchas forzada, otros descansando porque previeron el trabajo desde hace cinco meses, algunos laborando casi horas extras en sus talleres para cumplir en próximos días con los pedidos de los visitantes; lo cierto es que los artesanos alistan los últimos detalles ya sea en sus talleres o en los pequeños comercios instalados a lo largo de su calle principal.

Además, durante la celebración de la Feria también se puede encontrar rica gastronomía típica de la región, y hasta tomarte la foto del recuerdo con las catrinas y catrines vivientes que recorren las calles de Capula, sin duda una tradición escondida que vale la pena encontrar.

Actualmente, la catrina, ha dejado sus límites originales del grabado de Posada y el lienzo de Rivera, convirtiéndose en un artefacto vivo, parte de la cultura de los mexicanos, su oposición a la muerte como angustia diferencia a México como uno de los pocos países en el mundo que enfrenta la muerte con fiestas y risas, en vez de sollozos y angustia. Es una artesanía que simboliza el mestizaje, que resalta la riqueza formal y espiritual del país.

“Catrina’s Carnival in Capula” is a much an awaited event by the people of the town, the picturesque streets are filled with colorful exhibitions and sale of the mythical catrinas made by skilled craftsmen in the area. In the carnival you can see the craftsmen working as fast as possible, others resting because they prevented the work for five months ago, some others doing extra hours in their workshops to fulfill the incoming visitor’s requests for the next days, the truth is that the artisans prepared the final details either in workshops or small businesses installed along the main street.

In addition, during the Fair you can also find rich cuisine of the region, or take photo with the living catrinas as a souvenir, through the streets of Capula there is a hidden tradition that definitely is worth finding.

Currently, Catrina, has left its original boundaries like Posadas’s engraving or Rivera’s canvas, becoming a living artifact, part of the culture of Mexicans, its opposition to death as a torment differentiate México as one of the few countries in the world which face death with festivities and laughter instead of tears and anguish. It is a craft that symbolizes miscegenation, highlighting formal and spiritual wealth.

Los posibles ancestros de los huicholes fue una tribu llamada Teochicimecas, una de las tribus Nahuatlacas que salieron de Chicomoztoc “lugar de las siete cuevas”. Mantuvieron una vida independiente de los imperios mesoamericanos. En la conquista de los españoles, el pueblo huichol huyó, refugiándose en las montañas, manteniendo así su autonomía como hasta la fecha.

Esa independencia les permitió desarrollar libremente sus costumbres y tradiciones sin influencias externas. Dándole poder comunicativo a su arte, el único medio para preservar la memoria colectiva, ya que no tienen un lenguaje escrito, es atraparla en sus artesanías.

El arte wixárika habla por su gente, maneja un significado más profundo sobre la cultura y la historia de su pueblo. Sin embargo; esta riqueza cultural se ha visto amenazada por el factor económico, forzando a un número de huicholes a migrar hacia áreas como Guadalajara y la Costa para trabajar o vender sus mercancías.

Possible ancentros of the Huichols were a tribe called Teochichimecas, one of the seven Nahuatlacas tribes who had left Chicomoztoc “place of seven caves” . They keep an independent life from the Mesoamerican empires. When the Spanish Conquest ocurred, the huichol people escape, taking shelter in the mountains been able to preserve their autonomy, as they have done to date.

This independence allowed them to freely develop their customs and traditions without external influences. Giving communicative power to their art, the only way to preserve the collective memory, due to the lack of a properly written language, is by catching it into their handicrafts. Wixarika’s art speaks for it’s people, holds a deeper hidden message about their culture and history. But nevertheless; this autonomy and cultural wealth has been threatened by the economic factor, forcing a number of Huichols to migrate to areas such as Guadalajara and to the coast to work or sell their wares.

The Wixárika culture

The Huichol art is not the main matter, it’s more important to know the Huichol artists before their art.

El peyote, alimento divino El Peyote, llamado hikuri en su lengua, es el mayor símbolo religioso ya que es el principal medio para contactar con sus dioses. Según la leyenda, el dios Tamatz Kauyumari (“Nuestro hermano mayor venado azul”)

To understand the meanings of Huichol art we must understand their cosmogony, their mythical narrative in which people base their origins and the universe’s.

We can measure the importance of religious role in their lives with their 24 ceremonial centers (tihupas), guarded by the elderly or wisest of the tribe to take care of nierikas, the amalgams of energy that extends the wisdom of ancestors, and focuses on the physical word with offerings or ceremonial objects created to flatter, thank or ask favors from their deities, the elements of nature. Nierika is a wixárika word that refers to the appearance, the face or feature of things; it’s the representation of an idea and the reflection of who creates it. The nierika can represent the face of the sun, the skin of the earth, the face of deer or fire, peyote’s face and the face of the man who makes the offering.

The Huichol has a fascination with the number five and attributed mystical properties. Five is the number of their cardinal points, their deities, and color of the corn and peyote. Five times must the mara’akame (“who knows how to dream” in wixárika), the spiritual leader of the community, peregrinate to Wirikuta, to complete his training and achieve the maximum religious power to penetrate the world of the sacred.

Para entender los significados del arte huichol hay que entender su cosmogonía, su narración mítica en la que fundamentan su origen como pueblo y el origen del Universo. Podemos medir la importancia del rol religioso en sus vida con sus 24 centros ceremoniales (tihupas), resguardados por los ancianos o más sabios de la tribu para cuidar los nierikas, amalgamas de energía que prolonga las sabiduría de los antepasados, y las concentra en lo físico como ofrendas u objetos ceremoniales creadas para halagar, agradecer o solicitar favores a sus deidades, los elementos de la naturaleza.

Nierika es una palabra wixárika que se refiere al aspecto o característica de las cosas; son la representación de una idea y el reflejo de quien la crea. El nierika puede representar el rostro del sol, la piel de la tierra, el rostro del venado o del fuego, la cara del peyote así como el rostro del hombre que hace la ofrenda.

Los huichol tiene una fascinación con el número cinco, le atribuyen propiedades místicas. El número cinco se manifiesta en sus puntos cardinales, sus deidades y los colores del maíz y el peyote.

Cinco veces debe peregrinar el mara’akame (“quién sabe soñar” en wixárika), el líder espiritual, a Wirikuta en Real de Catorce, San Luis Potosí, para completar su entrenamiento, alcanzar el máximo poder religioso para poder penetrar en el mundo de lo sagrado.

Un grupo de cazadores en temporada de hambruna salen a cazar, sin éxito. Al encontrar un venado, lo persiguen hasta llegar a Wirikuta, el venado desaparece y se convierte en peyote. El cactus sirvió para alimentar a su gente, quienes se fortalecen y se curan de todas sus enfermedades. Por eso, el peyote es considero el alimento espiritual que alimenta el alma y el cuerpo de sus tribus.

De este mito surge el ritual anual del peregrinaje al área desierta de San Luis Potosí.

Another myth tells of the origin of the Wirikuta, the sacred territory. A group of hunters in famine season go hunting, without success. They found a deer, which is chased until they reach Wirikuta, where it disappeared and became peyote.

The cactus is used to feed their people, who are strengthened and cured from all diseases. That’s why the peyote is considered the spiritual food that heals soul and body of their tribes. This myth gives the origin to the anual pilgrimage to the desert area of San Luis Potosi to communicate with the gods.

Los colores tienen una perfecta armonía, ninguno pierde su intensidad, crean un espacio lleno de potencia y pasión, maravillosas figuras nacidas gracias al florecimiento del color. ¿Y cómo es que se logra esto? La frase colores vividos no es solo una metáfora, en el arte huichol se vuelve realidad cuando el mara’akame, en sus trances para comunicarse con los dioses, puede efectivamente vivir el color, guiado por la voz del fuego y la tierra, escuchando los susurros del venado, el maíz y el peyote, para cantar las voces de los dioses

The wixárika people live the emotions intensely, which makes posible to connect the nature with all areas of their existence, experiencing life with another perspective. Same happen with the color, it becomes an experience, a deep and penetrating symbol of perception. The color selection has an origin: peyote, the sacred food.

The used colors coexist in perfect harmony, none lose its intensity, creating a space full of power and passion, wonderful figures born from simplicity thanks to the flowering of color. And how is this accomplished? The phrase vivid colors is not just a metaphor, in the Huichol art it becomes reality when the mara’akame in their trances to communicate with the gods, can truly live the color, guided by the voice of fire and earth, listening to the whispers of the deer, corn and peyote, to sing the voices of the gods

The mara’akame is responsible to find the paths in dreams, to pursue the balance of rituals and provide physical and spiritual health of his tribe. The mara’akame sings only under the influence of peyote, these songs often provide inspiration by raising his mind, overstep the threshold of the unknown and contact with deities; the design and images narrate the ancient stories shown on these journeys of the mind, with its colors and ideograms reproduced in all handmade Wixárika’s creations.

Crafts with high religious symbolism Most of the huichol’s handicrafts have it’s origin in rituals and are intrinsically related with their spiritual life.

Niérikas.

Originally the tablets with a hole in the center, covered with colored stamens, are called neirika (now any offering is called that way), also known as nieriluu or transgenerational wixárika mirror by some historians. They were made with natural-dyed wool. Now, industrial yarns are used, and rituals tablet’s size had grew because of industrialization.

It used to represent the myths, holidays, and the power of mara’akame and the magic of their gods. The ones for sale are copied by skilled craftsmen. From being mystical objects, the connection between past and present,source of the wisdom of the universe, the heart of the eternal reincarnation, to be an artisan product whose purpose is the sale by the need of survival.

Muvieris

Pequeñas flechas de bambú confeccionados con una vara cubierta de hilo, en su extremo tiene plumas de águila o halcón.

Son usadas en ceremonias por el mara’akáme para curar, conocer los designios de sus deidades, adivinar el futuro y contrarrestar los hechizos provocados por los brujos. Se le atribuyen poderes especiales a las plumas de águila como la sabiduría, el valor y la protección contra cualquier mal. Su origen mítico está asociado con las deidades de la caza, el venado Paritzika y el águila principal, considerada la guardiana de la morada de los muertos (Werika Wimari). Los brujos confeccionan sus muvieris con plumas de buho, lechuza u otros pájaros nocturnos.

Small bamboo arrows made with a covered wire rod, at the end has attached some eagle or hawk feathers. this are used in ceremonies, to heal, know the gods’s plans, foresee the future and counteract spells caused by witches. Eagle’s or hawk’s feathers have special powers, wisdom, courage and protection against evil. His mythical origin is associated with the hunting deity, Paritsika the deer and the main eagle, considered the guardian of the abode of the dead (Werika Wimari). Sorceress’s muvieris are made with owl’s or other nocturnal bird’s feathers.

Tacuats Morrales bordados con motivos religiosos o con chaquira, sirve para que los chamanes guarden los símbolos sagrados, como las muvieris para sanar, purificar y cuidar a su tribu. El mara’akáme pasa los símbolos por todo el cuerpo, pronuncia encantos y sopla las plumas. Por la noche la magia trabaja con la ayuda de la luna y velas para saber los males que se liberaron del alma de la persona.

Son usados por el pueblo para cargar con sus pertenencias personales, es considerado símbolo de protección para quién lo porta.

Tsikuri También llamado ojo de dios, es una cruz de carrizo con estambres hilados con figura de rombos.

Asegura la salud y protección de los niños. El padre agrega un rombo por cada año de vida, hasta llegar a cinco, el número mágico del mundo huichol. Se utilizan colores especiales. El negro por Tetei Amara, el Océano Pacífico, donde está la serpiente que devora a los hombres; el azul por el agua y la lluvia, representa al Rapawiyeme, el Lago de Chapala; el rojo simboliza la región de Parietekúa, donde vive el dios peyote. Los colores elegidos son el mensaje, el medio por el cual los hombres piden y hablan con sus dioses.

Rukures Jícaras decoradas con cuentas hechas de huesos, arcilla, piedra, coral, turquesa, pirita, jade y semillas de maíz, calabaza o frijol, piedritas de hormiguero, pedazos de cristal de roca, cabellos o pedazos de carne de venado, figuras de cera o bolitas de algodón. Hoy, las jícaras son parte de los productos artesanales más populares del pueblo wixárika, se utilizan chaquiras o piedras de plástico y en ocasiones materiales naturales como cuarzo, cristales o piedras preciosas para el mercado coleccionista. Un fragmento del mito de la Madre del Maíz nos explica esta creencia. La diosa ofrece a un joven huichol hambriento una olla llena de tortillas y una jícara llena de atole; el joven no creía poder saciar su hambre con eso, pero la comida se renovaban mágicamente, y quedó satisfecho. Los dioses huicholes son todopoderosos, siempre podrán escuchar y cumplir las peticiones de su gente, aunque parezca imposible.

“kuka” Es una máscara ceremonial tridimensional, surgieron de pequeños cuencos de calabaza, eran cubiertas con semillas, huesos, arcilla, coral y conchas, actualmente se usan cuentas comerciales. Son usadas en rituales religiosos en fechas de Pascua. El águila bicéfala, Tatei Werika Wimari, es representada en estas máscaras.

De aquí deriva la práctica moderna de las figuras de madera con cabezas de serpientes y jaguares.

La chaquira es usada para elaboran pulseras, gargantillas, bolsos, cinturones y aretes, para complementar la indumentaria tradicional de la gente huichol.

Los diseños se arma con las manos, agregándose una a una las pequeñas chaquiras. En ocasiones se utilizan chaquiras checoslovacas, estas son más pequeñas y caras, utilizadas solo en piezas para coleccionistas por su acabado más fino y exquisito.

Sus trajes de algodón y de tela tejida están bordados con diseños que invocan a sus antepasados cristalizados sobre la tierra, o Takakauma. El huerruri, el pantalón de manta del hombre huichol y el hutuni, la camisa larga y abierta a los costados, representa su mundo en cada puntada creadas por las manos de la comunidad, con la única guía de su imaginación y la cosmonogía de su cultura. El bordado es tan importante que existen nierikas que piden a los dioses por un buen bordado.

The beads is used to produce bracelets, necklaces, bags, belts and earrings to complement the traditional clothing of the Huichol people. Design are created by hand, adding on by one the small bead. Sometimes Czechoslovak beads are used, a tiny and more expensive glass bead used only in pieces for collectors because of its finest and exquisite finish.

Their cotton suits with woven fabric are embroidered with designs that invoke their ancestors crystallized on earth, or Takakauma. Huerruri, men’s blanket huichol pants, and the hutuni, the long and sideopened shirt, represents their world in every stitch patiently created by the hands of the community, their only guide, their imagination and cosmogony of their culture. It is so important that there are nierikas to ask the gods for a good embroidery.

Un poco de historia El origen más remoto de esta artesanía se encuentra en China, cuyos diseño y técnicas fueron llevados a la península de ibérica por alfareros de la España musulmana a finales del siglo XII, expandiéndose por toda Europa.

La porcelana oriental era símbolo de prestigio, tanto la cerámica japonesa como china tenían bastante reconocimiento.

Las primeras piezas que llegaron a México fue por medio del Galeón de Manila, también llamado el Nao de China, una nave española que comerciaba entre Filipinas y la Nueva España. Traían porcelana china, biombos y otras artesanías, espadas japonesas, alfombras persas, jarrones de la dinastía Ming, entre otros. De aquí surge la primera inspiración de la Talavera Poblana.

Pero fue en 1550, que un pequeño grupo de artesanos de los talleres de Talavera de la Reina, Sevilla y Génova se establecieron en la Nueva España, en Puebla.

Estos artesanos respondieron al ferviente deseo de la alta sociedad mexicana por mostrar su renombre al poseer una vajilla de porcelana fina o loza europea, la mayoría de las importaciones se quebraban por el largo viaje.

Así, los artesanos europeos comenzaron la producción local de la talavera, nutriéndose del conocimiento prehispánico de los indígenas en el manejo de la arcilla presente en el estado.

Puebla, the largest colonial city of Mexico known for its historic center; worldwide recognized for its ceramical production of Talavera Poblana, exclusive of the state, abundant in places like Cholula or Atlixco because of its mineral rich soils and its ancient manufacturing tradition.

A little of history The most remote origin of this craft is in China, whose design and techniques were brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Muslim potters of Spain in the late twelfth century, expanding throughout Europe. The oriental porcelain was symbol of prestige, both Japanese ceramics and Chinese had enough recognition.

The first pieces that arrived in Mexico was through the Manila Galleon, also called the Nao of China, a Spanish ship that traded between the Philippines and the New Spain. They brought Chinese porcelain, folding screens and other crafts, Japanese swords, Persian rugs, vases from the Ming Dynasty, among others. Hence the first inspiration of Talavera Poblana arises.

But it was in 1550, a small group of artisans workshops Talavera de la Reina, Seville and Genoa settled in the New Spain, in Puebla. These craftsmen answered the fervent desire of the high Mexican society to show its popularity by having a fine china or earthenware Europe, most imports were broken by the long journey. Thus, European craftsmen began local production of Talavera, feeding the prehispanic indigenous knowledge in managing this clay in the state.

The term tile comes from azulisch Arabic word which means to coat walls. Talavera’s design inspiration came from the porcelain coming from the Far East.

Los primeros diseños con estilos asiáticos representaban ciervos y garzas, muy comunes en la porcelana china kraak, mezclando los elementos con diseños mozárabes y japoneses; dando como resultado una amalgama muy peculiar.

En el gobierno virreinal, se crearon las primeras ordenanzas para controlar la calidad, se usaban firmas u hologramas para evitar falsificaciones y se realizaban inspecciones. Trends brought by the eastern parts of the Manila Galleon as it was fashionable and had enough demand for those finishes and designs. The first designs with Asian styles represented deer and herons, common in Chinese porcelain kraak, mixing elements mozárabes and Japanese designs; resulting in a very peculiar amalgam.

In the colonial government, the first ordinances were created to control the quality, and signatures or holograms were used to prevent counterfeiting and inspections were carried out. This greatly enhanced the quality of parts, thus reaching the “golden age of talavera” between 1650 and 1750, spreading to other countries such as New Spain, Guatemala, Cuba, Santo Domingo and Venezuela.

Contrario a lo que normalmente se piensa, la talavera no era una alternativa de bajo costo para aquellos que no podían adquirir las porcelanas del Galeón. En ocasiones, era inclusive más cara que la porcelana extranjera por sus complicados diseños con tintura azul que se obtenía del cobalto, un material extremadamente costoso. En ocasiones, su uso tan marcado le daba una cualidad casi tridimensional a las piezas.

La talavera se implementó en azulejos, los cuales eran una demostración del estatus económico familiar o de la iglesia.

A tal grado llegó la importancia del uso de azulejos que se creó el dicho:“No aspirar a construir una casa de azulejos equivale a no aspirar a mucho en la vida.”

Durante el periodo de Guerra de Independencia, los gremios de alfareros se abolieron, la cerámica se producía sin calidad y el mercado de la talavera colapsó, dejando solo siete de los 46 talleres productores del siglo XVIII. La talavera estuvo a punto de la extinción, amenazada por esta situación, las importaciones baratas y de baja calidad, y la falta de creatividad en los diseños.

Pero los artesanos lucharon por preservar la tradición hasta que fue reconocida bajo la Denominación de Origen en 1995 para garantizar su protección legal contra manufacturas similares realizadas de manera apócrifa, asegurando los métodos originales y certificando la importancia cultural de estas piezas. Gracias a esto, la talavera es reconocida a nivel internacional, exportando piezas a Estados Unidos, Canadá y Europa, con colecciones de talavera inclusive en Nueva York.

Contrary to common belief, Talavera was not a low-cost alternative for those who could not acquire Galleon porcelains.

Sometimes it was even more expensive than foreign porcelain for their intricate designs with blue dye that was obtained cobalt, an extremely expensive material.

Sometimes they use is so marked that it gives an almost threedimensional quality to the pieces.

Talavera was implemented in tiles, which were a demonstration of family economic status or church.

Importance of tiles use created the saying: “Those who do not aspire to build a house of tiles do not aspire to much in life.”

During the War of Independence, potters guilds were abolished, ceramics was produced without quality and talavera market collapsed, leaving only seven of the 46 producers workshops in eighteenth century. Talavera almost was extinguish, threatened by this situation, cheap and low-quality imports, and lack of creativity in the designs.

But the craftsmen fought to preserve the tradition until it was recognized under the Designation of Origin in 1995 to ensure legal protection from similar articles made of apocryphal manner, ensuring the original methods and certifying the cultural importance of these pieces. Thanks to this, the talavera is recognized internationally, exporting pieces to the United States, Canada and Europe, including talavera collections in New York.

Refined technique of creation

La producción de alfarería de Talavera contempla seis procesos distintos que duran aproximadamente seis meses.

Cada etapa se cubre con dos o tres pasos con delicadeza. El proceso integral suma quince pasos, sin incluir su embalaje comercial.

El cuidado que requiere la cerámica de Talavera es excesivo.

Si uno de los pasos no resulta como debe, la pieza queda arruinada. Un descuido como filtrar mal la mezcla de los barros o dejar secar el barro en un cuarto con ventilación puede significar horas de trabajo desperdiciadas.

El proceso de la elaboración de la talavera prácticamente no ha cambiado desde la temprana época virreinal. En aquella época, los alfareros encomendaban las piezas con oraciones especiales durante el proceso de cocimiento.

Todo el proceso de elaboración puede llegar a tomar tres meses para la mayor parte de las piezas, pero en algunas puede durar hasta seis.

El proceso es complicado a un grado tal que algunos talleres en Puebla ofrecen visitas guiadas y explican el proceso. El taller certificado y aún en operación más antiguo es la “casa Uriarte”, fundada en 1824 por Dimas Uriarte, y se especializa en diseños de la era virreinal. Otro taller certificado es el “Talavera de la Reina”, conocido por que aplica diseños de artistas mexicanos contemporáneos.

La talavera fue una ventana abierta a los intercambios culturales más fascinantes de la historia de tres continentes, Asia, Europa y América; a tal grado que éstos contribuyeron a conformar el carácter nacional de un pueblo.

México es la orgullosa cuna de la Talavera poblana, impecable por excelencia.

The Talavera pottery production includes six different processes that last about six months.

Each stage is covered with two or three steps delicately. The whole process is a total of fifteen steps, not including commercial packaging.

The care required to produce the Talavera pottery is excessive. If one of the steps is not as it should, the piece is ruined. Carelessness and bad filtering the mixture of mud or clay to dry in a room with ventilation can mean hours of wasted work.

The process of drafting the talavera is unchanged since the early colonial era. At that time, the potters entrusted the pieces with special prayers during the cooking process. The entire development process can take three months for most of the pieces, but some can last up to six.

The process is complicated to such an extent that some workshops in Puebla offer guided tours and explain the process. Certificate and oldest workshop in operation is the “House Uriarte” founded in 1824 by Dimas Uriarte, and specializes in designs viceregal era. Another certified workshop is the “Talavera de la Reina,” known for applying designs contemporary Mexican artists.

mexican psaltery, virreinal melody México siempre ha sido un país musical, que ama el movimiento del día a día y los sonidos que su ambiente le provee y así el mexicano ha tratado imitar, y estar en unión con estas melodías mediante instrumentos musicales.

Constituido por varias piezas de madera en forma de trapecio, el salterio, es en realidad un instrumento, que se cree, es originario de Europa, sin embargo se pueden encontrar registros de instrumentos similares en el Medio Oriente. Este llegó al suelo mexicano en momentos de la conquista de los españoles.

Evolución La mayoría de los músicos mexicanos del siglo XIX y principios del XX compusieron obras para salterio fueron: Juventino Rosas, Abundio Martínez, Manuel M. Ponce, Enrique Mora, entre otros.

Durante muchos años, se le ha considerado un instrumento de museo porque, con el tiempo, entró en desuso debido a la entronización de la guitarra a partir de la Revolución mexicana de 1910, el decaimiento popular de los género en los que eran usados el salterio, como el vals, polca o la marcha; y a la difusión de la discografía moderna como los corridos, el mariachi y el bolero. Los primeros que empezaron a recuperar este instrumento, a través de la formación de orquestas exclusivamente de salterios, fueron los asiáticos, donde ya llevan más de 30 años en activo.

Características Se puede tocar de manera muy diversa, mediante el uso de la yema de los dedos en cada cuerda, produciendo una nota, se puede usar como un instrumento de cuerda frotada, utilizando un “arco” muy similar al del violín, así mismo, pueden utilizarse palos para tocar las notas.

Los sonidos que se pueden alcanzar con el salterio mexicano son de tenores, sopranos y requintos, cada uno constando de distinta cantidad de cuerdas, de hasta 90 o 100 cuerdas para los mas grandes. Son inconrtables la cantidad de melodías y canciones que se pueden reproducir.

Vestimenta teenek, metáfora cosmológica de identidad cultural.

En la huasteca Potosina habitan los teenek, grupo maya que se extiende por el norte de Veracruz desde la Sierra de otontepec hasta el noreste de San Luis Potosí.

Los hablantes del teenek definen el término como “los que viven en el campo, con su lengua, y comparten ‘el costumbre’ ”.

Para los nahuas y mestizos, los teenek son conocidos como los huastecos.

En la Huasteca, los textiles realizados por las mujeres indígenas reflejan el destino, ellos lo llaman k ´ ij en teenek o tonali en náhuatl. La vestimenta tradicional muestra la filosofía y pensamiento de una cultura en las figuras de animales, plantas, seres humanos y los dioses que están referidos en su tradición oral. El arte textil es una manifestación concreta y visual de un sistema simbólico que otorga identidad a un pueblo.

Teenek speakers define their name as “those who live in the countryside, with their language, and share ‘the habit.’” For the Nahua and the mestizos, Teenek are known as the Huastecos.

In the Huasteca, textiles made by indigenous women reflect the fate, they call it k ‘ij in Teenek or tonali in Nahuatl. Traditional dress shows the philosophy and thoughts of a culture in animals, plants, humans and gods representations which are referred to in their oral tradition. Textile art is a concrete and visual manifestation of a symbolic system that gives identity to people.

in a particular way, the actions involved in their cycle constitutes planting, harvesting, spinning, warping, weaving, embroidery and clothing have a symbolic value. This cycle originates particular codes that constitute a recognizable language only among those belonging to a cultural group.

According to Teenek culture, in each cardinal point is a god, represented by the four petals of the Huasteca flower or star.

Teenek’s mythical space is bounded by the ocean to the east and the mountains to the west, which are representations of repose of the souls; ordinary people lies in the west, and healers and dancers in the east.

The caves are a place of worship and communication, the gateway to the world of the gods, inhabited by thunder, the rain giver and the fertility goddess.

The jungle is life, is represented by the tree is a symbol of a person’s life, the woman is the direct representation. In the jungle, they have their homes integrated with nature and the earth is a sacred place for rituals, ceremonies and dances, giving offerings at funerals and in agricultural cycles.

Animals represent the spirit of each person, the joy of their house, the environment and family relationships. Jaguar is the animal of strength. When a child is born, the path to follow in life is embroidered with figures on his or her bag. A red ball is added if male, it representing the one who gives life; and a green ball is added, if female, which means fertility.

When a person die, the same embroidery made on his or her birth is replicated on the bag, adding a star and a small gourd.

This symbolic embroidery is called “The way of life”.

El que viste de cierta manera muestra que concibe el mundo de una forma particular, las acciones implicadas en el ciclo que constituye sembrar, cosechar, hilar, urdir, tejer, bordar y vestir tienen un valor simbólico. Dicho ciclo deviene códigos particulares que constituyen un lenguaje reconocible sólo entre los pertenecientes a un pueblo o a un grupo cultural.

Según la cultura teenek, en cada punto cardinal se halla un dios, representados por los cuatro pétalos de la flor huasteca o estrella. El espacio mítico de los teenek esta delimitado por el océano al este y la sierra al oeste, que son representaciones del descanso de las almas; la gente ordinaria descansa en el oeste, y los curanderos y danzantes en el este. Las cuevas son lugar de culto y comunicación, la puerta al mundo de las divinidades, donde habita el trueno, dador de lluvia y la diosa de la fertilidad.

La selva es vida, es representada por el árbol que es símbolo de la vida de una persona, la mujer es la representación directa. En la selva, tienen sus hogares integrados con la naturaleza y la tierra es sagrada, lugar de rituales, ceremonias y danzas, brindando ofrendas en los entierros y en el ciclo agrícola.

Los animales representan el espíritu de cada persona, la alegría de la casa, el entorno y las relaciones de la familia. El jaguar es el animal de la fuerza.

Se bordan figuras en una talega donde se señala el camino de los recién nacidos que ha de recorrer en la vida. Se agrega una bola roja, representa a quien otorga la vida, si es hombre; y una bola verde, si es mujer, que significa fertilidad.

Al morir, se le bordada la misma talega que se le confeccionó al fallecido en su nacimiento, agregándole una estrella y un pequeño guaje.

A este simbólico bordado le llaman “El camino de la vida”.

Las vestimentas femeninas de la tradición mesoamericana son una metáfora del mundo en su dualidad de principio y fin. El cosmos es un vestido, ya que todo parece interconectarse, y así cada elemento tiene sentido respecto de los otros.

El quechquémil, en teenek se denomina dhayemlaab, prenda con la que las mujeres cubren su torso, actualmente utilizado para ocasiones especiales. La vestimenta tradicional teenek consta de falda negra, blusa de colores brillantes como el amarillo o el azul celeste, reservándose el rosa para cuando se casen. El quechquémil que carece de flecos indica que la mujer es soltera, y el que se encuentra tupido de ellos significa que quien lo porta vive en matrimonio.

El dhayemlaab, es un mapa cosmológico del pueblo teenek es la historia de una prenda sagrada que ha ido evolucionando desde hace siglos. El petop, es un

El petop es la reminiscencia del antiguo tocado que utilizaban las huastecas prehispánicas y consistía en entrelazar sus cabellos teñidos de rojo con hilos de plumas retorcidas.

La evolución de la vestimenta femenina no sólo ha ocurrido en su iconografía, también ha cambiado su uso ceremonial tradicional que aún se vincula con los ancestros, en particular con la Gran Madre Tierra (Pulik Miim T’sa baal), la cual ha sido desplazada de su territorio sagrado por el desarrollo urbano.

La limitación del uso de la vestimenta masculina y la dificultad de las mujeres huastecas para confeccionar las prendas artesanales representativas de su cultura, es una problemática cada vez más latente. La comercialización se encuentra en un punto crítico ya que se realiza de manera individual, el laborioso bordado y el poco tiempo que pueden dedicarle las mujeres huastecas que también deben velar por el hogar y la familia, son factores que entorpecen el crecimiento de estas artesanías.

Actualmente, al menos un integrantes de cada hogar se dedica a la elaboración de la artesanía, sin embargo, la necesidad económica y de emigrar a las ciudades ha propiciado la perdida de interés en las nuevas generaciones por esta costumbre perdiendo no solo el arte del bordado, sino una identidad cultural.

La vestimenta teenek no sólo se trata de un sistema indumentario creado para cubrirse o protegerse de los embates del ambiente sobre el cuerpo, las prendas tienen en un medio sociocultural, ya que otorgan identidad individual y de grupo.

The market is at a critical point as it is done individually, the laborious embroidery must be made in the short time because huasteca women also have to ensure home and family, this are factors that hinder the growth of these crafts.

Currently, at least one of the members of each household is dedicated to the development of crafts, however, economic and the need to migrate to cities has led to the loss of interest in new generations for this custom, losing not only the art of embroidery, but a cultural identity.

Teenek Garments is not only is a clothing system created to cover or protect their body from the ravages of the environment, the clothes have a socio-cultural environment, since they provide personal and group identity.

Escondidas entre la región otomítepehua, se encuentran unos cuantos cientos de mujeres que han dedicado su vida y sus manos para crear obras color arcoiris llamadas “Tenangos”, maravillas del mundo textil, reconocidos mundialmente por sus diseños, complejidad y belleza estética y tradicional.

El tenango es una manta multicolor y multipropósito que surgió por las ganas de superarse de las mujeres de la región. En la década de 1960, las comunidades otomíes de la Sierra Oriental atravesaron por una fuerte crisis económica, desatada por una terrible sequía que provocó muy malas cosechas. En San Nicolás y San Pablo, comunidades del municipio de Tenango de Doria, Hgo., la situación fue tan devastadora que sus pobladores se vieron en la necesidad de buscar crear nuevas alternativas económicas, a partir de lo que sabían hacer, de lo que conocían y de lo que tenían a la mano. Es así que se plantearon la posibilidad de que las mujeres, bordadoras ancestrales, comercializaran las blusas que ellas mismas elaboraban.

Hidden inside the “otomí-tepehua” region, there can be found a couple hundred of women, who have dedicated their entire lives and their hands to create works of rainbow color called “tenants”, wonders of the textile world, recognized around the globe for the designs, complexity and traditional esthetic beauty.

The tenango is a multicolored piece of clothing, which can serve several purposes, that came to be thanks to the will of the local women to overcome the hard times. In the decade of 1960, the otomíes community of the Sierra Oriental went through a serious economic crisis, because of a terrible drought that provoked very bad harvests. In San Nicolás and San Pablo, communities of the municipality of Tenango de Doria Hidalgo, the situation was so devastating that their inhabitants were forced to look for new economic alternatives, with what they could do, with what they knew and with what they had in hand. It’s this way that they planted the possibility that the women, ancient in the art of needlework, to comercialize the blouses that they made themselves.

Utilizan diversos materiales, como telas blancas como lino, manta, seda y algodón, sin embargo, en la actualidad podemos encontrar algunos tenangos hechos en telas oscuras, con bordados blancos o dorados, o de colores. Los tenangos son arte viva y palpable , que manejan estilos y diseños únicos por pieza, con elementos animales, prehispánicos o culturales, que cargan consigo una basta historia que no hace mas que enriquecer y aumentar su valor.

Podemos observar caballos, pájaros, venados, perros, conejos, burros, armadillos, toros, libélulas, peces, gallinas y otros seres en sus diseños, ambientados con grecas que se asemejan a los pétalos de nochebuena, árboles, tulipanes, y demás elementos de la naturaleza combinan perfectamente con algunos otros símbolos prehispánicos que dan vida a la prenda. Con sus vivos colores como amarillos, rojos, verdes y azules que resaltan la belleza de cada puntada.

Los conocimientos y saberes, la relación con la naturaleza y el cosmos, la religiosidad, en una palabra: la cosmovisión de cada pueblo, son plasmados en colores, texturas y formas que dan cuerpo y significado a la vida simbólica del tenangos, son una representación de esta rica y compleja construcción cultural.

Al ver el trabajo terminado, es difícil imaginar que algo tan hermoso fue hecho a mano, pero al sentir las puntadas, puedes sentir todo el esfuerzo y talento que fue incorporado a cada una de las obras.

Using varios materials, white fabrics such as linen, muslin, silk and cotton, although, nowadays we can find some tenangos made with dark fabrics, with white, golden or colored embroidery. The tenangos are live and palpable art, that carries unique style and designs in each piece, with animal, prehispanic, or cultural elements which carry a huge backstory, that only manages to enrich and increase its value.

Horses, birds, deers, dogs, rabbits, donkeys, armadilos, bulls, dragonflies, fish, chickens and other beings can be observed in the designs, accompanied with grecas that resemble the poinsettia’s petals, trees, tulips, and other elements of nature perfectly combined with some other preHispanic symbols that give life to the garment. With its bright colors like yellow, red, green and blue that highlight the beauty of each stitch.

Knowledge and wisdom, the relationship with nature and the cosmos, religiosity, in a word: the worldview of people, are reflected in colors, textures and shapes that give meaning to the symbolic life of tenangos, a representation of a rich and complex cultural construction.

When you see the finished piece of clothing, it is hard to imagine something with such beauty was made by hand, but when you feel the stitches, you can also feel the huge amount of effort and talent that was put into making each and one of them.

Los artesanos, solían vender su trabajo a bajos costos, no valorando lo suficiente su ardua labor hasta que una comisión representante de los artesanos de esta región, se acercó a la Asociación Mexicana de Mujeres Empresarias en Hidalgo, asesorándolas para exportar sus valiosos productos y lograr obtener un pago justo por sus artesanías.

Actualmente se ven los tenangos decorando espacios en lujosos hoteles dando un toque especial de México. La calidad y distinción de los bordados son dignas de enmarcarse en elegantes bastidores para darle colorido a muros en donde se rompe la solemnidad.

Es importante no olvidar los orígenes, “en los tenangos permea la cosmovisión indígena que todavía forma parte de su vida cotidiana, a pesar de las transformaciones que ha sufrido la comunidad, en lo cultural y en lo ideológico.” (Investigadora Carmen Lorenzo). No debemos permitir que se pierdan las tradiciones, ni que la cosmovisión ancestral otomí sea olvidada. Es necesario rescatar el pensamiento y la cultura indígena.

Craftsmen used to sell their pieces at a low cost, not valuing enough their hard work until a committee representative of the artisans of this region approached the Mexican Association of Business Women in Hidalgo, advising them to export their valuable products and achieve a fair payment for their crafts.

Currently, Tenangos decorate spaces in luxury hotels giving a Mexican special touch. The quality and distinction of this embroidery are worthy of been framed in elegant racks to give color to walls and break the solemnity.

It is important not to forget the origins, “in tenangos, the indigenous world view permeates, it is still part of their daily lives, despite the cultural and ideological changes that have befallen the community.” (Researcher Carmen Lorenzo). We must not allow traditions to be lost, or that the ancestral Otomi worldview be forgotten. It is necessary to rescue indigenous thought and culture.

Árbol de la vida, ícono de Metepec

Metepec, pueblo mágico cercano a la ciudad de Toluca, municipio lleno de tradición alfarera la cual ha dado vida a hermosas artesanías típicas del Estado de México como los árboles de la vida.

Metepec, magical village near the city of Toluca, a town full of pottery tradition which has given life to beautiful typical of the State of Mexico and the trees of life crafts.

Un poco de historia

In 1477, the last aztec tlatoani Axayacatl conquered Metepec, and the arrival of the Spanish kingdoms of Toluca were invaded and defeated. The friars, in order to evangelize, spent this place as indoctrination center for its importance as a center of exchange, cultural exchange and main route for travelers.

Chapels and monasteries were built on the remains of the ancient Aztec temple. They asked a craftsman to make tree-shaped clay figures with two human figures: Adam and Eve. This way, missionaries spread their religious beliefs and through these artifacts conversion of indigenous was easier.

Symbol of the defeat of the Teotihuacan culture and the victory of the Spanish conquest, born the first sign of the life’s tree.

However, the ceramic piece, as we know it today, began to be produced about 100 years ago, around 1935.

En 1477, el último tlatoani azteca Axayacatl conquistó Metepec, y a la llegada de los españoles los reinos de Toluca fueron invadidos y derrotados. Los frailes, con el propósito de evangelizar, destinaron este lugar como centro de adoctrinamiento por su importancia como centro de trueque, intercambio cultural y principal ruta de los viajeros.

Se construyeron capillas y conventos sobre los vestigios del antiguo templo mexica. Pidieron a un artesano hacer creaciones de barro con forma de árbol y dos figuras humanas: Adán y Eva. De esta manera, los misioneros propagaron sus creencias religiosas y por medio de estos artefactos se facilita la conversión de los indígenas.

Símbolo de la derrota de la cultura teotihuacana y la victoria de la conquista de los españoles, nace el primer indicio del árbol de la vida. Sin embargo, la pieza de cerámica, tal como la conocemos hoy, comenzó a producirse aproximadamente hace 100 años, se cree que en 1935.

Life’s Tree, Metepec’s icon

Basándose en los árboles bíblicos pedidos por los frailes en el siglo XVI. Para “leer” propiamente un árbol de la vida, debes empezar de abajo hacia arriba, partiendo del principio que para conocer la historia debes partir desde su raíz para entender la magnitud de su follaje.

Del barro nace el árbol Para su realización de estas piezas artesanales se necesita del barro, que debe ser triturado en polvo fino, si contiene polvo grueso pueden arruinar la pieza.

Al mezclarlo con agua, se agrega el ingrediente secreto exclusivo del municipio de Metepec, la flor de tule, la cual le da consistencia al barro. Por eso en otros estados de México, las piezas se rompen con mayor facilidad. Se amasa de barro para hacer las pieza y se deja secar. El tiempo de secado varía del clima.

Están elaborados en un estilo “naif”, con estilo humorístico y hasta infantil, con una diversidad de elementos sorprendente, todos creados a mano. Las pequeñas piezas son unidas al tronco con una masa de barro o por medio de hilos de alambre.

Se pintan con anilinas, pinturas acrílicas o esmaltes, o pueden lucir el color natural del barro.

Existen de todos tamaños y precios, desde 7 hasta 60 centímetros; algunos colosales de seis metros, teniendo como único límite la habilidad creativa del artesano.

La pieza completa es cocinada en un horno a baja temperatura.

Finalmente será usada como ornamento, admirada en un museo o comercializada en una tienda artesanal. La elaboración de estos árboles puede tardar desde unas semanas hasta varios años en obras monumentales.

Based on the biblical trees ordered by the friars in the sixteenth century. To “read” properly a life’s tree, you must start from the bottom up, based on the principle that to know the story you must start from the root to understand the magnitude of their foliage.

From Clay was born the tree These handcrafted pieces requieres clay for its elaboration, which must be crushed into fine powder, if it contains rough pieces it can be ruined. When mixed with water, the exclusive and secret ingredient of Metepec town is added, the tule flower, which gives consistency to the clay. That’s why in other states of Mexico, the specimens break more easily.

Clay needed to be mash to make the pieces and let it dry. Climate determines the drying time.

They are made in a “naif” style, humorous and even childish, with a variety of surprising elements, all created by hand. Small pieces are joined to the trunk with a mass of clay or through wire strands. They are painted with dyes, paints or glazes acrylic, or can be left with the natural color of clay. There are all sizes and prices, from 7 to 60 centimeters; some getting to be six meters tall, with the creative skills of the artisan as the only limit.

The entire piece is cooked in an oven at low temperature.

Eventually it is used as an ornament, admired in a museum or sold at a craft store. The development of these trees can take anywhere from a few weeks to several years in monumental works.

El tule, también llamado junco o espadaña, es una planta acuática nativa de los lagos y pantanos de Norteamérica.

Su nombre deriva del náhuatl tolli que significa junco. Esta planta crece en la ribera del lago de Texcoco.

The tule, also called bulrush or cattail is a native aquatic plant of the lakes and marshes of North America. Its name derives from the Nahuatl word tolli which means reed. This plant grows on the rivera of Texcoco’s Lake.

Anteriormente los árboles de la vida describían la divina creación y diversos pasajes bíblicos exclusivamente. En la actualidad, existe mayor libertad, pueden representar acontecimientos históricos, leyendas populares, tradiciones, obras literarias, la vida de algún personaje o inclusive la del mismo artesano. Los árboles se convirtieron en el espejo de la imaginación del artesano, las costumbres y tradiciones de Metepec.

La dualidad es otro de los cautivadores temas presentes en las coloridas escenas de los árboles de la vida, representada con la confrontación de ambos lados, exhibiendo mundos opuestos, como la Vida y la Muerte, la Noche y el Día, el Bien y el Mal, el Hombre y la Naturaleza.

Previously, Life’s trees described exclusively the divine creation and biblical passages. Currently, there is more freedom, historical events, popular legends, traditions, literary works, the life of a character or even the same craftsman are now represented.

It became the mirror of the imagination of the craftsman, and customs or traditions of Metepec.

Duality is another captivating theme in the colorful scenes from trees of life, confrontation of both sides are represented, showing opposite worlds, as Life and Death, Night and Day, Good and Evil , Man and Nature.

Caminando al presente

Naíf (del francés naïf, ‘ingenuo’) es una corriente artística caracterizada por la ingenuidad y espontaneidad, el autodidactismo de los artistas, los colores brillantes y contrastados y la perspectiva acientífica captada por intuición.Se inspira en el arte infantil, muchas veces ajeno al aprendizaje académico.

Se considera a la familia Soteno, originaria de Metepec, como la precursora de el árbol de la vida.

Aunque se reconocen también al artesano Timoteo González, quien trabajaba para familia, como el real precursor de la tradición de árboles de la vida en el municipio.

Walking to the present Soteno family is considered as the forerunner of the life’s tree.

Although, the craftsman Timoteo González, who worked for family, is also recognize as the real precursor of this tradition.

Naif (from the french word naïf, means ‘naive’) artistic movement characterized by the ingenuity and spontaneity, self-taught artists, bright and contrasting colors and unscientific perspective captured by intuition. It was inspired by children’s art, usually against the academic learning.

Temáticas decorativos

En los setenta, Alfonso Soteno, descendiente las primeras generaciones creadoras de la icónica pieza de arte popular, por encargo del gobierno mexicano elaboró 52 árboles gigantes que fueron enviados a diferentes embajadas mexicanas alrededor del mundo. Hay extranjeros que viajan a México exclusivamente para conseguir una artesanía con su firma. Los museos de Arte Popular y el de Antropología e Historia también cuentan con su árbol de la vida firmado por los descendientes de esta familia de alfareros.

Con la admiración viene la imitación, situación que puso en peligro el trabajo artesanal original del Árbol de la vida, siendo amenazado por réplicas, imitaciones sin el respaldo de la cultura, el trabajo artesanal, ni la calidad. Los artesanos exigieron protección y en el 2009, el Árbol de la Vida se convirtió en marca registrada, lo que permitió preservar y fortalecer la importancia de la tradición artesanal. El próximo reto para conseguir el reconocimiento de esta artesanía es alcanzar la Denominación de Origen, distintivo que brindará un mayor valor comercial y respaldo cultural a los Árboles de la Vida.

Actualmente es una de las artesanías mexicanas más reconocidas a nivel mundial, siendo expuesto en diversos museos en Europa, Asia y Norteamérica y obteniendo importantes pedidos para su exportación a China, España, Alemania, Francia, Italia y Japón.

Es una tradición que ha sido respetada y admirada durante mucho tiempo por conocedores nacionales y extranjeros.

In the seventies, Alfonso Soteno, one of the descendant of the first creative generation of this iconic piece of folk art, was commissioned by the Mexican government to produced 52 giant trees which were sent to the Mexican embassies around the world. Life’s tree became trademark in 2009, which allowed to preserve and strengthen the importance of artisanal tradition. The next challenge for the recognition of this craft is to achieve the denomination of origin, distinctive that will provide greater business value and cultural support to the Trees of Life.

Life’s tree is one of the most recognized worldwide Mexican crafts, being exhibited in several museums in Europe, Asia and North America and obtaining important orders for exportation to China, Spain, Germany, France, Italy and Japan. El charro mexicano tiene su origen en Salamanca, España, en donde designan con tal nombre a los aldeanos. La charrería en México nace en los Llanos de Apan, Hidalgo, donde se empezó a colear (jalar al animal por la cola para derribarlo). El primero que coleó fue un picador español, que persiguiendo a un torete en campo abierto, le atrapó del rabo y, tirando de él, a pulso derribó al cornudo. De ese hecho surgió la suerte de colear, como se hace actualmente.

Los conquistadores trajeron los primeros caballos, de origen arábigo, a América. Desconocido para nuestros naturales, el caballo llegó a ser indispensable para el hombre de campo. Dada la utilidad del animal en sus diversas y difíciles disciplinas (recorrer las enormes extensiones de las haciendas, juntar y arrear el ganado, etcétera) se crearon nuevas necesidades.

La escaramuza, como arte y deporte, nace por los años cincuentas, poniendo gracia y belleza a la fiesta charra.

verdadero traje charro El traje de charros reglamentado debe ser confeccionado con lana, gamuza o la combinación de ambos materiales. Además, tener un alebrije es poseer un pedacito de lo mejor del arte mexicano, tan amplio, colorido y majestuoso, pero aún desconocido para muchos, tan lleno de vida y una belleza espléndida reconocida a nivel internacional.

The guerrerense art go back to the first evidence of Olmec influence in 300 B.C. Mezcala people, a Mesoamerican archaeological culture of Guerrero, in southern Mexico; introduced its peculiar geometric style from the stone sculpture and ceramics into Teotihuacan.

When Aztecs conquered the area, important tribute items became into exquisite craft products, work such as gold pieces for priests and nobility. With the Spanish conquest, the creation of this items drastically change the creation of these items, new techniques and materials were introduced, disappearing completely some indigenous products.

The craft activity provides most of the State income, especially to the isolated indigenous communities.

Guerrero’s handicrafts greatly reflect its indigenous nature, although the obvious European and even Asian influences reflected in its aesthetic and technique.

Tourism has increased sales and production of handicraft in recent decades. Three main touristic centers that influence this are Acapulco, Zihuatanejo and Taxco. The main state market for handicrafts is in Acapulco.

El arte guerrerense se remonta a la influencia olmeca en 300 A.C. La gente mezcala, cultura arqueológica mesoamericana de Guerrero, en el sur de México; introdujeron su peculiar estilo geometrizante de escultura de piedra y cerámica en Teotihuacán.

Los aztecas al conquistar la zona, convirtieron los artículos de tributo importante en producciones artesanales exquisitas, como el trabajo en piezas de oro para sacerdotes y la nobleza. Con la conquista española se cambio drásticamente estos artículos, se introdujeron nueva técnicas y materiales, desapareciendo por completo algunos productos indígenas.

La actividad artesanal proporciona la mayoría de los ingresos del Estado, especialmente a las aisladas comunidades indígena.

Por eso, las artesanías de Guerrero reflejan de gran manera su naturaleza indígena, aun siendo obvia la influencia europea e incluso asiática reflejada en su estética y técnica.

El turismo ha incrementado las ventas y la producción artesanal en las últimas décadas. Los tres principales centro turísticos que influyen son Acapulco, Zihuatanejo y Taxco, el principal mercado de artesanías del estado se encuentra en Acapulco.

El origen de la plata de Taxco

The origin of Taxco’s silver

“El primer vestido del hombre fue el embrujo esotérico de una joya”, frase del libro Joyería de Taxco, escrito por Raúl Ybarra, recopilador de las distintas técnicas de elaboración de la joyería en México.

“En la Antigüedad el gusto por las joyas estuvo muy relacionado con la adquisición de poderes que supuestamente conferían y con la posesión de un valor codiciado”.

El trabajo de la plata y el oro se remonta a la época prehispánica, cuando eran sumamente importantes para las ofrendas, los elementos sacerdotales y la vestimenta de la nobleza.

Actualmente, la plata es la más conocida por su finura y excelente acabado, siendo Taxco la localidad exponente de joyas de calidad impecable. En el período colonial, Taxco era rica en plata, convirtiendo en ricos a muchos mineros. Al acabarse los metales de las minas, el trabajo de la platacomenzó a desarrollarse en 1931.

William Spratling, un artista estadounidense, al llegar a Guerrero vio la oportunidad y fundó el primer taller artesanal de plata en Taxco, creó un programa para enseñar el oficio, convenció a dos jóvenes que se dedicaban al oro en Iguala para mudarse a Taxco y abrir el taller. Creía que el diseñador debía dignificar el material, siendo este el nuevo ideal para artesanos de la época; y que su fabricación debía realizarse donde el metal tenía su historia.

William Spratling es reconocido por sus creaciones artísticas en plata y su influencia en el diseño de la platería mexicana del siglo XX. Es llamado el «padre de la plata mexicana».

“In ancient times, taste for jewels was closely related to the acquisition of power and allegedly conferred a coveted possession of value.” Raul Ybarra. The work of silver and gold dates back to pre-Hispanic times, when it was extremely important for the offerings, the priestly elements and dress of the nobility.

Actually, silver is known for its finesse and excellent finish, Taxco is the principal exponent known as the town of jewelry for its impeccable quality. In the colonial period, Taxco was rich in silver, becoming many miners wealthy.

Metals extraction from mines ended, and silver treatment began to develop in 1931.

William Spratling, an American artist, saw the opportunity when he arrived to Guerrero and founded the first craft workshop silver in Taxco, created a program to teach the craft, and by persuading two young men who were gold artisans in Iguala, they moved to Taxco and open the workshop. He believed that the designer had to dignify the material, which was the new ideal for artisans of the time; and that its manufacture must be performed where the metal had its history.

William Spratling is known for his artistic creations in silver and their influence on the design of the Mexican silversmiths of the twentieth century. It is called the “father of Mexican silver.”

1 El éxito del taller de Spratling trajo consigo el interés de los habitantes, quienes posteriormente abrieron sus propias tiendas, artesanos importantes como Antonio Castillo y Antonio Pineda, fueron la nueva generación de plateros que han rescatado una técnica olvidada de la combinación de diferentes metales, que tiene un origen prehispánico, llamados “metales casados”, creando auténticos mosaicos en piezas ornamentales.

La Feria Nacional de la Plata y la competencia en la última semana de noviembre, posicionan aún más la producción de plata en la ciudad. La mayoría de la producción es de exportación, comprada por turistas, y llevada fuera de México.

The success of Spratling’s workshop brought the interest of the people, who later opened their own stores, important craftsmen as Antonio Castillo and Antonio Pineda, were the new generation of silversmiths who have rescued a forgotten combination of different metals technique with a prehispanic origin, called “married metals”, creating authentic mosaics ornamental pieces.

The National Silver Fair and competition in the last week of November, positioned silver production further in the city. Most production is for export, bought by tourists, and taken outside Mexico.

A finales de noviembre y principios de diciembre, Taxco de Alarcón, Guerrero, se llena de festividad con exposiciones, conciertos y conferencias gracias al Concurso Nacional de Platería, en el cual participan los principales talleres plateros del país para exponer sus piezas.

Este Pueblo Mágico celebra 78 años de este concurso. Se ha instituido para reconocer a los artesanos, orfebres y diseñadores que todos los días transforman barras de plata en obras de arte, en este concurso se presentan sus piezas a concursar en cuatro categorías: Joyería, Orfebrería, Escultura y Nuevas Tendencias.

El origen de esta fiesta se remonta a la época de William Spratling, se realizaba una fiesta anual llamada Día de la Plata, consistía en concursos entre los artesanos locales donde el era el juez.

Silversmith’s National Competition

In late November and early December, Taxco, Guerrero, is filled with festivals, exhibitions, concerts and conferences thanks to the Silversmith’s National Competition, in which the main silversmiths workshops in the country exhibit their developed pieces.

This magical town celebrates 78 years of this competition. It has been instituted to recognize craftsmen, goldsmiths and designers who transform everyday silver bars into works of art in this contest, their pieces are presented to compete in four categories: Jewelry, Goldsmith Sculpture and New Trends.

The origin of this festival dates back to the time of William Spratling, with an annual festival called Plata’s Day, which consisted of contests among local artisans where he was the judge.

El mar ha ofrecido a la humanidad un sin fin de productos, tanto para la subsistencia como para fines estéticos. Desde la antigüedad, se han utilizado conchas de mar, perlas, caracoles, y demás objetos procedentes de las profundidades del océano para adornar tanto su persona como para objetos y muebles.

Entre los más bellos productos que el mar ofrece se encuentra el coral negro, que antiguamente ha servido para realizar amuletos a los cuales se les atribuía poderes míticos. Los griegos lo consideraron como de la buena suerte contra cualquier mal agüero, en la India los sacerdotes lo utilizaron en sus ritos religiosos. En México, especialmente en la parte sureste del país, se realizan bellas piezas partir de este material, joyería de exquisita calidad extraía de las profundidades del mar mexicano.

También conocidos como corales negros, por el color de sus esqueletos, son parientes cercanos de las anémonas de mar, comparten una simetría hexameral en su estructura. Es una colonia de organismos que tiene la forma de un pequeño árbol de 50 centímetros de altura.

Sus tejidos vivos son intensamente brillantes.

Los biólogos han calculado que crece más o menos 10 centímetros cada 50 años; por su belleza, calidad, escasez y difícil extracción, alcanza altos precios en el mercado internacional y con él especulan los coleccionistas y comerciantes en objetos preciosos. Se encuentra a grandes profundidades, entre los 30 y 60 metros, pudiendo llegar a los 100 metros.

En algunas zonas costeras, los corales finos comienzan a escasear debido a su alta demanda, y hay que buscarlos en profundidades hasta de 300 metros. Se han registrado varias muertes por la dificultad que representa sumergirse a esa profundidad.

Tratamiento al coral

Cuando se saca el coral del agua, se le llama "coral bruto"; tiene un cierto valor, que va aumentando de acuerdo con la calidad de elaboración o trabajo de que es objeto.

Se realiza una evaluación para calcular su valor, intervienen las características del coral, la perfección de la labor y el valor artístico de la obra para determinar su precio. Uno de los factores que más influyen en la mayor estimación del coral es su coloración, los de color más peculiar o menos frecuente suele ser los de mayor precio, y los de color más ordinarios suelen tener un costo menor. Refiriéndose al coral negro, es uno de los más caros del mundo.

El coral extraído sufre mermas por deshidratación, parásitos y durante el tallado, por lo que 8 kilogramos de coral negro en bruto equivalen a un kilogramo de coral de primera semiprocesado.

En 1960, el investigador francés Jacques Ives Cousteau descubrió en el Arrecife de Palanzar, al sur de la isla de Cozumel, en México, corales de excelente calidad, los nativos ya lo explotaban en pequeñas cantidades.

Actualmente, solo existe dos permisos federales en México para la extracción de coral negro, los cuales permiten a los artesanos de Cozumel continuar con su labor bajo las medidas ecológicas y de seguridad reglamentadas, ya que es importante mantener esta tradicional trabajo que por muchos años ha sido la fuente de ingresos para decenas de familias en la isla, afirmó el presidente de la Unión de Artesanos de coral negro, David Calderón Uc. El gremio de artesanos de Cozumel es el único permitido para trabajar legalmente con el llamado “oro negro”. Sin embargo, la extracción furtiva es algo presente a pesar de las reglamentaciones.

Pero al ser muy riesgosa y complicada la extracción, es poca la cantidad de coral que logran extraer, los recolectores ilegales se juegan la vida puesto que muchos no cuentan con la experiencia o el conocimiento para realizar este proceso y mucho mueren en el intento.

Los artesanos con permisos estipulan que se les permite como máximo extraer 50 kilogramos por mes para permitir que se restablezca el balance natural de los corales, sin embargo, los artesanos confiesan que suelen extraer, cuanto mucho, 15 kilogramos por mes.

Los visitantes suelen prestar mucho interés por las piezas fabricadas con este material pues es fácil llevarlo a otros países al contar con los hologramas que indican la legalidad de cada artesanía que adquieren.

Muchos han sido los productos que el mar le ha brindado al hombre para colmar sus necesidades, a la vez que sabe que su explotación ha servido para elevar el nivel tanto cultural como económico de los pueblos.

Le corresponde al hombre velar porque esa explotación se realice de una forma racional, debe respetar a la naturaleza y agradecer al mar sus favores, para evitar su extinción con la cual se borraría parte de la tradición de un pueblo.

El bordado yucateco no data de la Colonia, como muchos suelen suponer, se remonta a la época prehispánica. Incluso en el cenote de Chichén Itzá se han encontrado vestigios de prendas con el bordado maya “chuy cab” o punto de satín. Otros bordados que se siguen haciendo hoy día son el punto de cruz o xocbil chuy introducido por los españoles y el xmanikté o deshilado.

El origen específico del bordado y costura yucateca es desconocido.

Pero según información del Ayuntamiento de Mérida, el bordado yucateco se ha enriquecido con el tiempo hasta ser reconocido como patrimonio cultural de Yucatán, siendo el “xocbi chuy” o punto de cruz (el que sirve para los ternos) el más conocido.

De los bordados a mano, que generalmente son conocidos como costura (bordado se le llama al hecho a máquina), los más conocidos, además del punto de cruz, son costilla de ratón, diente de perro, punto de sombra, hilván, manic ben y xmol mis, estos dos últimos en peligro de desaparecer.

Bordados, tradición familiar Caso contrario de los bordados a máquina, los cuales están en su máximo apogeo, de los cuales se derivan las puntadas renacimiento, calado y rejilla, que últimamente se han vuelto populares.

Entre las puntadas que se realizan a máquina, las más populares son el bordado relleno, el sombreado, el bordado renacimiento, el rejillado y el calado. La tradición del bordado se transmite, por lo general, en el seno familiar. Las flores multicolores son el motivo principal de esta labor artesanal practicada por las mujeres desde antes de la Colonia.

Pocas veces reflexionamos acerca de las costumbres. Un claro ejemplo de ello es la tradición del Día de Muertos en México, fecha emblemática que se ha convertido en promotor del turismo nacional e internacional, declarado patrimonio intangible de la humanidad.

La muerte ha sido en todas las culturas un evento que invita a la reflexión, a rituales, a ceremonias, a la búsqueda de respuestas, que causa temor, admiración e incertidumbre. Las culturas prehispánicas compartían la creencia de que existe una entidad inmortal que da conciencia al ser humano y que después de la muerte continúa su camino en el mundo de los muertos, donde sigue necesitando de utensilios, herramientas y alimentos.

Un poco de historia Para los ya antiguos mesoamericanos, la muerte no tenía las connotaciones morales, no existía el cielo ni el infierno basado en el comportamiento de la persona, el alma de los muertos estaba determinado a cierto lugar por el tipo de muerte que habían tenido.

Los aztecas por ejemplo, creían que la vida ultraterrena del difunto podía tener tres destinos: Tlalocan o paraíso de Tláloc, dios de la lluvia. Aquí se dirigían aquellos que morían en circunstancias relacionadas con el agua: los ahogados, o por un rayo, por enfermedades como la gota o la hidropesía, la sarna o las bubas, y los niños sacrificados al dios. El Tlalocan era un lugar de reposo y de abundancia.

Omeyocán, paraíso del sol, presidido por Huitzilopochtli, el dios de la guerra. Aquí llegaban los muertos en combate, los cautivos que se sacrificaban y las mujeres que morían en el parto.

Death has been in all cultures, inviting to reflection, creating rituals, ceremonies in a searching for answers, which causes fear, admiration and incertitude.

Prehispanic cultures shared the belief that there is an immortal entity that gives consciousness to the human being and that after death it continues its way in the world of the dead, where it still needs utensils, tools and food.

A little of history For the ancient Mesoamerica, death had no moral connotations, there was no heaven or hell based on person’s behavior, the soul of the dead was determined to a place by the type of death they had.

The Aztecs, for example, believed that the afterlife of the deceased could have three destinations: Tlalocan or paradise of Tlaloc, god of rain. Here those who died in water-related circumstances lived: the drowned, or dead by lightning, or diseases such as gout or dropsy, scabies or galls, and children sacrificed to the god. Tlalocan was a place of rest and abundance.

Este lugar era habitado por Mictlantecuhtli y Mictecacíhuatl, señor y señora de la muerte. Era un sitio muy oscuro, sin ventanas, del que ya no era posible salir.

El camino era muy tortuoso y difícil, las almas deambulaban por distintos lugares durante cuatro años. Para recorrer este camino, el difunto era auxiliado por un perro Xoloitzcuintle que le ayudaría a cruzar un río y llegar ante Mictlantecuhtli, a quien debía entregar ofrendas. Al enterrar a quienes iban al Mictlán recibían, como ofrenda, cuatro flechas y cuatro teas atadas con hilo de algodón, los enterraban junto con el perro que les serviría de guía en el inframundo.

Hay un lugar especial para los niños que morían antes de su consagración. Chichihuacuauhco era un lugar donde se encontraba un árbol de cuyas ramas goteaba leche, para alimentar a los niños.

Los que llegaban aquí volverían a la tierra cuando se destruyese la raza que la habitaba. De esta forma, de la muerte renacería la vida.

Los orígenes del Día de Muertos en México, pueden ser contados hasta la época de los indígenas de Mesoamérica, con los rituales que celebraban las vidas de los ancestros se realizaron por estas civilizaciones por lo menos durante los últimos 3,000 años.

El antiguo festival caía en el noveno mes del calendario solar azteca, cerca del inicio de agosto, y era celebrado durante un mes completo. Las festividades eran dirigidas por el dios Mictecacihuatl, conocido como la “Dama de la muerte”. Se recordaba y celebraba a los niños y los parientes fallecidos.

Los conquistadores españoles al llegar a América en el siglo XV, horrorizados por el pagano ritual de los indígenas, cambiaron la fecha a inicios de noviembre para que coincidiesen con las festividades católicas del Día de todos los Santos y Todas las Almas en un intento de convertir a los nativos al catolicismo.

Actualmente, el día de muertos es un homenaje a los seres queridos fallecidos. Se invita a los espíritus a regresar a casa con una fiesta de alegría para volver a sentir a los que han partido. Las familias mexicanas se dispones a visitar los panteones, creando un paisaje pintoresco y colorido, adornado con flores, veladoras, juguetes, comida preferida del difunto y música.

Los hogares se adornan con altares para que las almas amadas abandonen el más allá y vaguen unos cuantos días por el mundo, visitando a su familia, su casa y amigos.
