You would think that after considerable time in a business that has more than its share of opinion-based rhetoric that I would have learnt most of its important lessons, but they still keep coming.
You see, I’d forgotten that everyone looks at things through their own, very unique lens and none of us are the same or exercise the same choices.
So, here’s a simple scenario: it is from my role as the owner of a staging business. It’s a relatively new business having been in operation for around 15 months. It’s a business that I love and it’s given me and the team a lot of joy. During that time, in excess of 150 stages have been completed and the value of properties being staged has ranged from $500,000 to over $6,000,000. The feedback has also ranged from absolute rapture – including offers to purchase every single staging item that’s gone into the property – to the occasional expression of disappointment. Now, a good 95% have been really happy, but 95% is not 100% and I’ve worked hard to ease the frustrations of the two – three parties who decided it wasn’t their ‘look’. But that’s the point where interpretation begins, and I’ve had to dig deep to understand and adjust accordingly. For example, when people say ‘modern’, it could mean modern colours, modern and contemporary, mid-century modern – like you would find at Mr Mod – or modern in 1989!
I’ve been asked for table runners (similar to what my grandmother loved), glass plates with three tealight candles arranged neatly on top and centered, big corner couches from one of the city’s discount stores… and I’ve been reminded that it’s the client who calls the shots, which they do!
So, I’ve removed, restaged and reimagined, worked all weekend and been at the staging sheds at 5am to help sort. And it’s worked, which I’m grateful for. So the lesson is to ask more questions, listen hard to the responses and maybe pass the baton graciously when there’s a gaping distance between preferences or there’s nothing that adequately captures a potential client’s style in five large sheds of accessories and furniture.
It’s so true that life lessons are what make the world a more interesting place and space to live in, as does a beautifully presented home!

Working with pride and passion
Even a keen easterly wind can’t detract from Luke Gardner’s pleasure in his al fresco “offi ce”. Upon a ridge overlooking the glorious lakes at Clearwater, Luke is found laying pavers for a large-scale remodelling of a property’s garden.
It’s a complete makeover involving everything from paving and hedging to decking and a BBQ area, right through to the fi nal planting,” says Luke. “The main design is in the style of a Japanese formal garden with specimen trees such as maples, to make an impressive statement, as well as a water feature and large pots fi lled with textured plants. Special lighting will be installed to highlight and enhance the garden.”
Luke adds that remodelling landscaping is his particular passion. “I really enjoy modernising an area – working with an existing space and some existing materials to create something so much better. It’s all about being fl exible while personalising ideas that are unique to each client’s lifestyle and to the environment.”
Luke certainly has to be adaptable and versatile with this project as he’s also been asked to build a service area with a vegetable garden, a spa pool area, and a space for grandchildren to play tucked away behind a block wall.
“It’s a big job, but anything a client can dream up we can build.”
