LOCAL AWARD WINNING DESIGNS

multi-unit WINNER

PHOTO ANTHONY TURNHAM

A central Christchurch CBD apartment complex by Marcus Stufkens of Stufkens+Chambers Architects was one of 22 awards at the recent 2022 Regional ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards.

The Riverbank Quarter development (pictured) won the Residential Multi-Unit Dwelling award. The design is a two-three storey complex of 14 mid-to-high market quality residential units and four street facing commercial tenancies. Judges noted that the central CBD apartment complex is a successful response to the client’s brief to create a mixed-use development that is desirable to live in and reintroduces a social ecology back into the city. “This building is an elegant solution. It is an exploratory work incorporating four primary building masses, all with blocks seeking to ground the scale of the development to refl ect the scale of the surrounding urban context. “With subtle nods to the existing urban context and open porches of historic terrace housing, the design encourages a sense of welcome, while overcoming the need to elevate fl oor levels to comply with restrictive fl ood plan levels, creating a positive spin and creating additional privacy to the ground fl oor spaces,” they commented.

A fresh start

Our general expectation is a that a building project of any signifi cant size will be complicated. It’s an innately intricate process which requires the right skills, resources, and paperwork to line up neatly.

It’s almost unheard of for a commercial building project to involve a great deal of friendliness and pleasure from all sides, but that is exactly what happened during the rebuild of the Romano’s

Food Group premises. The original property was destroyed in a fi re, so it was important to get back to business as soon as possible, and the Apollo Projects team has been key to making this happen. After a delayed consent process, the actual build was streamlined and is headed for a fast fi nish in September.

Construction Project Manager Chris McLoy says, “The coolest part of this project was the positivity from the client and the subbies. Everyone had a smile on their face and the client was fully engaged. We were all on the same page.” Romano’s Managing Director Brad Kirkpatrick says, “The fi re was a devastating event, and we are truly appreciative of everyone who has helped us to reach this rebuilding milestone. We have an amazing team here. We are looking forward to having many of them back on deck, delivering the pizzas we’re so passionate about.”

Don’t panic

When those tell-tale signs that something is wrong in the bathroom, kitchen or laundry areas begins escalating, it’s hard not to panic.

As that faint whi of sewerage starts pervading the whole house or that sporadic drip grows to a steady dribble, anxiety levels about fi nding a good plumber start to grow as well. Josh Mackey, owner of local family-owned MHR Drainage, a business with over 22 years of experience behind it, cites the points of di erence that has built its strong customer base. “Paramount is integrity, reliability, honesty and hard work from a great team of trustworthy people who listen, enjoy their work and get the job done to the highest of standards.” The fully qualifi ed team service the residential sector, as well as the commercial sector, such as retirement villages, schools, corporate premises and shopping centres. The scope of work carried out is myriad, from diagnostic problem-solving and camera surveying through to blocked drains and so much more. Josh says the team brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to every job, which underscores why this popular plumbing business is so in demand. your SocialCapital

Every weekend, almost without exception, I spend a portion of my time planning for the week and month ahead. Sometimes it’s a fairly clinical exercise: confirming appointments, researching different market indicators, prepping for oneon-one sessions and working on our company’s goals and direction.

Sounds straightforward and it is, but at other times it requires a much deeper overview because when you’ve been doing things for a very long time it’s easy to keep doing them the same way without question. I like to counter this by venturing down rabbit holes looking at new ways of applying different creative processes to the business. There’s always so much to learn or relearn and, being curious by nature, I sometimes start with the simplest of concepts. Here’s one that began with a TED Talk by Margaret Heffernan, a Professor of Practice at the University of Bath School of Management. One of the presentation’s main focus areas was Social Capital. Social Capital is all about relationships. It enables people to work together as a team rather than as isolated individuals chasing their own goals. It powers up sports teams and companies alike. An easy explanation given by Professor Heffernan was: “it’s the mortar rather than the bricks” in a relationship, team or business. It holds us together, driving greater empathy and connection. Here’s where it becomes significant, and it feels particularly important to me as part of a leadership team. It’s where ideas flow, loyalty grows and trust strengthens. It can start with the simple easy gestures: greeting everyone every day, every time; shared food and events; celebrating birthdays and successes; business planning aimed at developing skills and talents; as well as a ‘hand-up not hand-out’ philosophy. There are numerous ways of making the mortar in your business stronger, but you must focus on that growth. It’s so easy to let these things slip. I have memories of working in an environment where the person in charge never, ever greeted you unless you had upset the status quo and that greeting was more of a snarl followed by a note written in red plastered up on the office wall. It’s no surprise that the fractured team struggled to find its best work. A culture of helpfulness is another powerful enabler and this plays a big part in our business. It’s critical to how we think of our people and our desire to add value to the industry we’re part of. So, as you work through your own personal journey at home or at work, tap into these ideas and actions. Teamwork bests the actions of the individual, especially if it’s aligned and values based. Do more to help the person beside you, give of your time and yourself … who knows where it could go? And who knows what new rabbit holes I’ll get to explore in the weeks and months ahead?
