Canterbury-based designers took home 22 awards at the recent 2022 Regional ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards.

Afi t-out for Three Boys Brewery by Pippin Wright-Stow of F3 Design was the regional award recipient for Commercial Interior design. Judges’ comments noted: “The fi t-out of the brewery comprises a large industrial glass wall, a front counter area, and a mezzanine fi t-out. It is fi rst and foremost functional and essentially respectful of the heritage of the brewery. Combined with the existing warehouse the carefully curated insertions achieve an authenticity and old-school factory feel. This is not a situation where the fi t-out is ever complete but an evolving adaptation to the character of the space,” they noted.

Does the layout work the way you envisioned it? Is the space used e ciently? Is the storage ergonomic and usable on a daily basis? Do you have the right storage for your individual shopping habits? Will doors, drawers or handles collide if opened simultaneously? All these questions and more can be answered in one test drive. Make a booking and then try out a 1:1 scale mock-up of your project, and discuss the various alternatives. “Let us answer all the important questions before you commit to production,” explains Blum marketing consultant Shelena Kaulima.

LIANNE DALZIEL CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL | MAYOR A city on show

It’s spring and Christchurch is ON SHOW again! This is the time of the year that we celebrate everything our city has on offer during spring.

There are a large number of events to look forward to from September to December. I was showing a newcomer to the city pictures of Hagley Park in full bloom with our famous cherry blossoms and a carpet of da odils, and she was absolutely delighted. She can’t wait to take pictures and send them back to her hometown. It truly represents us at our very best. Days of Ice is a fabulous festival that takes us from 29 September through to 9 October. The last event that I will attend as Mayor is the Antarctic Season Opening. The fact that we are one of only fi ve gateway cities to Antarctica is very special to our city and I am thrilled that I will be able to host this annual event one last time. There will be many activities for families to enjoy and plenty of opportunities to learn more about this precious last-tobe-discovered continent. But I have one more column for Metropol readers to tell you more about that! This is a great time of the year to invite friends and family to come and explore our new city, which is very much on show!

ROSS STEELE TE PAE CHRISTCHURCH | GENERAL MANAGER An industry feast

It has been amazing to watch confi dence returning to our industry and see conference delegates in and around our city during the the past few months.

Recent reports show hotel nights are up, we’re seeing people are heading out and about more, and at Te Pae Christchurch our booking calendar for this year is fi lling up. It’s very much a team e ort, but we are pleased to be able to play a role in regenerating our city and region post-Covid-19. Since we began hosting events in May, Te Pae Christchurch has generated around $20 million in economic value for Ōtautahi Christchurch. During that time, we have hosted more than 60 events – including 27 multi-day conferences – for local, national and international guests. We’re proud that Te Pae Christchurch is beginning to have a positive impact on local suppliers, including those providing our food and beverages. This includes the suppliers of our locallysourced produce, which for the fi rst three months of operations included: 4578 litres milk; 886 litres cream; 2418kg beef, 2106kg lamb; 875kg pork; 4715kg poultry, 1068kg seafood; 2621kg fruit; 4687kg vegetables; 4000 bottles of Waipara wine and almost a tonne of co ee beans. And it goes further than just our direct spending, with events at Te Pae Christchurch contributing 28,000 hotel nights to local accommodation providers. We hope the increased confi dence will continue and be the catalyst for further investment in the ongoing regeneration of Christchurch, leading to more development and opportunities for our city.

ALISON ADAMS CHRISTCHURCHNZ | CEO Learn from others

With borders opened and the visitor economy reviving, this is the time to redefi ne our place.

The Garden City has been a big part of Christchurch’s identity, but with a refreshed Ōtautahi what else defi nes us and how do we, as a community, want to be represented in the future? Recently we kicked o a big piece of work to answer this and seek to understand what makes Christchurch special, as well as develop Destination Management Plans for Christchurch and Banks Peninsula. The work will position Christchurch to be consistent in its messaging within NZ and overseas, increase visitor and talent attraction, drive business confi dence, investment and migration, and boost resident pride. So it is rooted in authenticity and informed by a diversity of viewpoints, we really want to hear from as many residents as possible. We have just launched a resident survey to help us gain deep, constructive insights and determine the way forward. I strongly encourage you to have your say on defi ning our place at defi ningourplace.co.nz. We are excited to launch this project with a team of global experts alongside local agencies. This collaboration between city brand specialists and local knowledge gives Ōtautahi the best of both worlds. Delivering in mid-2023, the result will be a clear place brand that, through engagement with our community and mana whenua, has delivered a truly authentic vision. It’s an exciting time for our city, and I am looking forward to hearing your views through the survey.

LEEANN WATSON CANTERBURY EMPLOYERS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE | CEO Make your voice heard

It’s that time again when election hoardings appear on our streets and leafl ets appear in our mailboxes.

Every three years, we have the opportunity to re-elect and refresh our local representatives. It is important that voters have su cient information to make well-informed decisions, because local government a ects all of us. Every business and every resident, on a day-to-day basis, interacts with or uses a service that is provided by a local authority. And in the case of business, local government can both facilitate economic growth and hinder it. It is staggering that only 2 in 5 people voted in the last local election and we must strive for better. That is why The Chamber is undertaking three initiatives in the lead up to election day to contribute to a betterinformed electorate. We are pulling together candidate profi les to provide at-aglance intelligence on where the mayoral candidates stand on the issues that matter to business. We are publishing a document outlining our expectations of local government throughout the next term, and we are hosting a Mayoral Forum featuring the two candidates that our members indicated they would most like to hear from – Phil Mauger and David Meates. The forum will be held on Tuesday 27 September, and is free to the public to attend, and we encourage you to do so. Voting is important – local government has a signifi cant role to play even if many actions go unnoticed, and it is important that your voice is heard.
